Scout Notes – Aguero Leaves It Late

A regulation Man City win includes an uncomfortably late goal for one key Fantasy asset, while crosstown rivals United are well off the pace at Spurs despite a blank for Harry Kane.

A telling 50% of Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) top 100 managers chose Sergio Aguero as their captain for Gameweek 25.

As a result, they had to suffer for just as long as the 16.8% of us mere mortals who handed him the armband while City eased past West Brom but the striker went scoreless.

A 90th minute goal – his eighth in nine Gameweeks – changed all that, taking him ahead of Kane as the top-ranked forward for points per match (7.0 v 6.5).

Net transfers-in of just under 300,000 for the Gameweek took Aguero’s ownership to 29%, still well short of Raheem Sterling (37.9%) in the City popularity stakes.

The midfielder duly obliged with a pair of assists and two bonus points for his first double-digit haul in five appearances, although one of those was from the bench.

Aguero, meanwhile, missed out on bonus on what was a relatively quiet night involving just two shots, both from inside the area, in the 3-0 win.

The 14-point star of the show was Kevin De Bruyne, who scored his first goal since Gameweek 18. It was one of six shots he fired in against the Baggies – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 25.

The Belgian, captained by 3.5% on the night, now has seven double-figure returns for the season as both he and Sterling continue to trail only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the midfield standings.

City’s other asset with major ownership, Nicolas Otamendi (31.7%), brought in clean sheet points for the first time in three matches, and with a different partner alongside him at centre-half.

New signing Aymeric Laporte (5.5) was handed a surprise debut as John Stones missed out through illness.

More than 16,000 managers have already swooped to buy the new man for Saturday’s trip to Burnley, putting him in the top ten for Gameweek 26 transfers-in, where he is joined by Sterling, De Bruyne and Aguero.

Otamendi has started 13 straight league matches and is long overdue a break. Vincent Kompany is currently fit again and should Stones recover from illness, Pep Guardiola will have four players chasing two centre-back spots.

Guardiola’s selection against the Clarets remains unclear, though we can presume that the Gameweek 27 home fixture – three days before the Champions League tie with Basel – will be the real hotspot for rotation. Otamendi and Stones – as the first choice pairing – are perhaps more likely to be preserved against the Foxes and could, therefore, get the start this weekend.

It might be unwise to throw Laporte into an away game debut at Turf Moor, with Kompany perhaps the more likely to feature.

Elsewhere, David Silva was booked and then had to leave the field after suffering a kick “in a painful area”, according to his manager. He will be an early doubt for Saturday’s encounter.

Kane blanks as Spurs shine

The most popular transfer combination of Gameweek 25 involved a switch from Harry Kane to Aguero, with 144,000+ managers ending the night content with their acumen – providing of course, no four-point hit was involved.

The England striker was, as ever, peerless for goal threat, firing in a Gameweek-high eight shots against Man United, five of which came from inside the box, but he still blanked for an eighth occasion at “home” this season.

Spurs won the match 2-0 thanks to a strike in just ten seconds from Christian Eriksen, who stroked home from a Dele Alli blocked effort, and a Phil Jones own goal, the United defender turning Kieran Trippier’s cross past the helpless David De Gea.

It was the Spurs right-back’s first start since Gameweek 22 – and only his third in nine matches – and he grabbed the chance to bring in 12 points, including maximum bonus, for his dwindling 3.6% ownership.

A calf injury to Serge Aurier might boost his chances of more consistent pitch-time in the short term, with security of starts now an issue again for fellow full-back Ben Davies (13.9%) as Danny Rose was deemed fit enough for a place on the bench on Wednesday.

It was an impressive performance for Spurs and a miserable night for United assets, most markedly Jones (16.9%).

The defender had been bought by 72,000+ for Gameweek 25 on the back of four straight clean sheets. His new owners were rewarded with that unwanted goal, a booking and -2 for their troubles.

Jose Mourinho’s attempts to incorporate new signing Alexis Sanchez into his side did not go well.

The midfielder, brought in by close to 75,000 new managers for the Wembley encounter, operated on the left flank for his league debut as both Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard kept their places, with Juan Mata the man to miss out.

That was a relief for Lingard’s 17.4% ownership, although the midfielder had a poor match and was replaced after 62 minutes.

Sanchez’s night was equally underwhelming and his inability to track back left Ashley Young horribly exposed to Spurs attacks, from Trippier in particular, all evening.

The Chilean also failed to produce a single shot or create a chance for team-mates.

Paul Pogba was another big name to struggle.

The 15.4%-owned Frenchman was uncomfortable in a defensive role alongside Nemanja Matic in central midfield and was subbed off by an increasingly exasperated Mourinho after 62 minutes.

United’s misery was completed by Marouane Fellaini, who was introduced from the bench, played nine minutes and then had to come off with a knee injury.

Spurs will now travel to Liverpool on Sunday in confident mood for what is a huge clash.

United entertain Huddersfield the day before for what should be an ideal match-up to rediscover their swagger – if Mourinho can find the right way to set up a side full of stars, but lacking balance.

United’s attack looks likely to deliver returns, though isolating the most worthy target looks to be a difficult task. Inevitably, Sanchez will be well fancied to introduce himself to the Old Trafford faithful with a bang, though Wednesday’s Premier League debut offered little encouragement.

Magpies miss out

United follow up the Huddersfield fixture with a trip to Newcastle, who missed a golden opportunity to record their first win since Gameweek 9 in last night’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.

Joselu had a tame penalty effort saved by the Clarets’ excellent Nick Pope before the Magpies took the lead when Jamaal Lascelles headed home debutant Kenedy’s corner.

The Brazilian, on loan from Chelsea, also earned Newcastle’s penalty and hit the post in an eye-catching display on the left of midfield which earned him two bonus and eight points. Matt Ritchie (1.8%) was the man who made way for Kenedy.

But the Magpies failed to build on their lead – in part due to Pope’s heroics.

The Burnley stopper made three saves and was awarded maximum bonus in an 11-point performance. He now has 15 bonus points for the season – more than any other keeper.

Pope’s ownership has simmered somewhat following the news of Tom Heaton’s return to training. The Burnley skipper would seem likely to succeed Pope in goal eventually, though when that will be is not clear.

As for Newcastle, they grabbed a point late on when Pope’s unfortunate counterpart Karl Darlow tipped Sam Vokes’ effort onto the bar, only for the ball to rebound off the goalkeeper’s head and into the net.

It would be harsh for coach Rafa Benitez to blame his man for the own goal, but with deadline day loan signing Martin Dubravka ready to take over between the sticks, the prospects for both Darlow (0.4%) and fellow keeper Rob Elliot (19.3%) look bleak.

Worth getting Stones out? Looking at Monreal despite fixtures he's playing well offensively.

Other options are Laporte and Davies.

Which one should I lose for Walcott?

      A) Son
      B) Mahrez

Also would need to lose Kenny or DCL as I have 3 Everton players already. Which is better?

      1) Kenny > 4.5 or less (if so, who?)

          So...

          Pickford > De Gea
          Otamendi > Monreal
          Lingard > Walcott
          Kane > Eriksen
          --
          Elliot > Foster
          Robertson > Mawson
          Milovojevic > Ayew
          Masuaku > Chilwell

Honestly, mate. I'd keep your current team. Kane will be a huge loss. Otamendi is the most nailed on City defender, he's not going to get dropped. Arsenal are leaking goals left right and center. You can steadily upgrade Lingard in the coming weeks, there is no rush to get Walcott for an away game at Arsenal.

As a Lingard owner I am worried. Guess I just have to stick him in the XI and hope he starts.

Have a horrible feeling United might smash Huddersfield and Lingard is on the pine. I was considering Pogba but he was awful last night and chucked his toys out the pram with the manager. Would be fancying a bit of Valencia armband action if I had him this week, I may try and find a way to get.

Depends how attacking he is; wasn't as far forward as he was last season and so would seem expensive. A sample size of one obviously doesn't help but I think it's a bit soon. Everton do look good for a few CS, though.

Those with FH still could also target those playing GW31 if they are looking to use FH in GW35, where there may be lots of players blanking who have DGWs in both GW34 and GW37.

Lots of strategies, but some need more immediate action than others!

If there are only 3 or so games in gw31 does it make sense to save the free hit for gw35.

This could see managers start to stockpile assets from those we known will play in gw31 from now - e.g. stoke and Everton.

1 – When is everyone planning to Free Hit? GW31 or GW35? This could have a big bearing on transfers as we may need to start taking GW31 blanks into account when making our moves if playing in GW35. Stoke, Everton, Liverpool and Watford confirmed for GW31 at the moment.

2 – Christensen and Kenny replacements? Two defenders who need to go but in different price brackets.

3 – Have the FF Scout rivalries cranked up a notch now with Jonty leapfrogging Az and Granville just a point behind Mark? 🙂

            In my opinion,
            plan for 31
WC prior to 33 for DGWs
            GW34 TC
            GW35 FH
GW36/37 BB or vice versa with GW34 TC

I think that you need to be reasonable in the decision making though, It's not the end of the world if you only have 7-9dgw players out of 11 if the other players a quality assets. then for the second DGW load up fully by using the transfers.

          1) What would you advise Mahrez owners to do?

          2) Can Aubameyang smash Granville's template to pieces?

          3) If Sanchez wasn't worth getting while he was at Arsenal ... Then what's changed?

          4) Has the transfer deadline day unearthed any cheap budget enablers?

          5) What is the best strategy for playing your chips in the run in?

          6) Why does Roy Hodgson describe minor injuries as if a player has been shot?

          7) Mark famously called Hazard "the villain of the season" last season ... Has anything changed?

Few people are likely to sell Kane now that United are out of the way, but for those who are still Kaneless, how long can we afford to wait before we get him back in?

Should we be taking hits or should we be waiting for the opportunity to buy back for free?

Or, given the value in a select few of cheaper options (Aubameyang, Firmino, Vardy, Wilson and Ayew), can we afford to go without Kane longer-term and spend the money elsewhere?

GW 28 is a major fixture shift plus you get almost all the details for blank planning. A less mooted strategy is a GWK 28 wild card with a potential FH GW 31. Gives you about 5 transfers for GWK 34 to roll out a BB while tackling the blanks or alternatively TC in GWK 34 and you still get 7 transfers for bench boost in GWK 37.

            3 strategies:
-Plan for them which could damage returns leading upto them.
-Take hits to try and play a full 11.
-Try to squeeze 5-6 players out and focus on the DGWs to get some returns back for the missing players in the BGW

            Captain Salah 16
            Kane 2 = 18

            Aguero (c) 12
            Salah 8 =20

Personally I'd have been 2 pts better off. But I'd have a transfer locked in for GWK 28.

I think we can agree that if you use the captain wisely then KaneExit is at best pretty much the same as Kaneremain. 😉

Good planining and of course som luck you are stil in a good position to aim even higher than 50k. wc and bb the most powerful tools to have left. tc is not necessarily that strong, realistically no more than 10-20 points and that is easily made up by good transfers and a one diff that goes right (or wrong ofc)

Assessing the the winter signings and their impact on existing fantasy assets

          - Mkhi and Auba
          - Who is most affected by Sanchez? Lingard or Martial or both. Sanchez can play anywhere.
          - How does Lucas affect Alli and especially Son? Or are they both safe and it is just the end of Sissoko finally?
          - Will Emerson affect Alonso or is he just fodder in cup games? He was not even playing at Roma.
          - How will Laporte affect Otamendi's starts? He is a 65m signing so it is a bit different than the Emerson situation.

And no, I am not FPLVirgin in disguise 😀

Only my third season, but seems to be to be the season where 'Luck', or bad luck has had the largest impact by some distance...

Rotation and Injuries (and suspensions to a degree) have completely plagued my season - After GW25, having played my 23 free transfers (and 11 hits...), I've already shipped out 17 injuries or suspensions (excluding those shipped out on GW8 wildcard...not to mention Barca bound Coutinho), and even now I have RLC, Elliot and Christensen gloomily looking up at me.

Onto last night…Christensen…Jones, while my rival gleefully lapped up attacking returns from Walcott, Eriksen and bloody Fernandinho…

How do Scoutcasters deal with such a degree of misfortune and a lack of opportunity for form a longer term strategy as it constantly falls apart at the first hurdle...?? Just laugh it off or kick an inanimate object hard?

Best UTD option? surely people should be looking at Martial but yet people still talking about Pogba who is overrated in these parts and Sanchez who was awful yesterday. Are people to quick to assume just because he did well at a 'lesser club' he is going to succeed at UTD. He's not been great this season and could he be starting to regress at nearly 30

Let's talk Bournmouth. Double up a possibility ? Stanislaus , Fraser, Ibe with Wilson?

We shall see. But my point is why is folk talking about ripping their team apart to put him, assuming he's going to live up to his price tag. For his value he needs a lot of goals and he not done much at all this season.

As much as I hate him, I think people who refer to themselves as "J-Linz", "Dat Guy" and "Welbz" are perhaps even worse than AC.

Do we put too much emphasis on the past rather than the future?

Plenty of logical reasons were given to avoid Kun but simple fact is top player top team top fixture.

ie. should we just do this for Sanchez too?

Is Son's appeal diminishing following Moura's appearance at Spurs? What alternatives would you suggest especially as the template midfield seems to have been broken up with Lingard and Arnie out of fantasy form and injured?

Also, am I am cursed, as I stuck with Christensen but then finally managed to bring in Alonso after trying to avoid the bandwagon, make him captain and then Chelsea have a shocker?

Is it true that if you stand in front of the mirror at midnight and say "Andreas Christensen" five times he appears... and then falls over in a Clouseauesque fashion and knocks himself out on the sink? Or that if you put Christensen in your FPL team you get a creepy phone call where a sinister voice simply says "57 minutes" (The Ring).

Did we get carried away and over extrapolate the Stoke result against a dismal Huddersfield? I don't expect consistent returns from a 6 million player like Shaquiri (although he was up against WATFORD) but now I'm remembering Lambert at Villa... performances that were as defensive and dour as the man himself.

Are we to presume that Stones is now out the first team after Laporte came in, kept a clean sheet and got very high praise from Pep?

I know Stones had illness but it's just the excuse Pep needed to throw Laporte straight in.

Perhaps over excited at the prospect of Aubameyang at 10.5, is it too soon to bring him in for this weekend's match and if the Scouts think he will start can he be a realistic captain option?

Can you describe your decision-making process when deciding whether or not to buy a newly-aquired player--either new to the league like Carillo or Laporte, or new to a team like Walcott or Slimani? Do you try to get in early before potential price rises? Do you wait for one big haul? Do you wait even longer to see consistent play and underlying stats? And how heavily does the profile of the player weigh in the decision?

I think the FH can easily be saved past DGW31. Two or three pool attackers, maybe 1 or 2 Bournemouth attackers, Walcott, and some defenders should be reasonably easily accumulated from now until then.

          Puell on Mahrez

"We receive at the last moment something about City and I think it was harsh for us. It was difficult also for Riyad," said Puel.

"We have to understand (all) parts: for me, for the squad, for the player. We will accept the decision, it was a decision taken between the two clubs.

"Of course I have all confidence about the owner to take a good decision about Riyad for the future and after we will see with Riyad when he can come back with us."

The Frenchman added: "All the players and staff will help him to come back with a smile and to enjoy his football. Players know it will be difficult sometimes for Riyad.

"We have a fantastic group, a fantastic squad, all the players have a fantastic relationship. All the players will give their best for Riyad."
