The Lacazette injury latest as budget forward Nketiah waits on first-team chance

Arsenal 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) | Josh Maja (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Daniel Ceballos (£4.7m) | Mario Lemina (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Ceballos x3 Maja x2 Nketiah x1

A last-minute Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) goal broke Fulham hearts as Scott Parker’s side let more points – and another clean sheet – slip away.

Recent Fantasy interest in the Cottagers has mostly revolved around their excellent keeper Alphonse Areola (£4.6m), with his 5.0% ownership enduring a third straight clean sheet wipe-out, the last two involving late, late goals.

A Lack Of Lacca

But it was indicative of a generally poor match that the biggest FPL news involved an injury to Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) who, with 10.5% ownership, was easily the most popular player on display – even more so after attracting 270,000 transfers in ahead of last Friday’s deadline.

The striker had scored four goals in his last four starts, only to limp off in the 70th minute on Sunday, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta delivering a ‘wait and see’ verdict after the game.

We’ll have the scan on Tuesday, see the extent of the injury and the timeline to it. I don’t know. He felt something in his hamstring, we don’t know the extent of it.

Arteta’s attacking options were already limited by an injury to Martin Odegaard (£5.9m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.3m) bout of malaria, meaning a second straight league start for Gabriel Martinelli (£4.9m).

The manager spoke about the need to rotate following Thursday’s Europa League tie and he was true to his word, with his most surprising move replacing the 7.3%-owned Bernd Leno (£5.0m) with Mat Ryan (£4.1m) because the latter ‘trains like a beast’.

All that training led to zero saves and no clean sheet either for the Australian, and it is the Lacazette development that could hurt the most Fantasy managers.

Then again, more Europa League-based rotation and upcoming games against Everton and Chelsea aren’t exactly boosting the appeal of the Gunners’ assets anyway.

Fast Eddie

At least the Frenchman’s replacement, Nketiah, thrived to earn the praise of his manager.

He always offers his best. Today he scored a goal, he had another two important chances and he’s always a threat in front of goal.

Fulham’s one and only shot on target came from Josh Maja‘s (£5.3m) penalty. Parker’s side have now scored just four goals in their last eight matches and haven’t managed more than one in a fixture since Gameweek 24.

The problem for Fantasy managers is that the Cottagers’ previous defensive resilience is an equally distant memory – having kept five clean sheets in seven matches up to Gameweek 27, they’ve not managed a single one since.

Parker might not have given up the ghost just yet:

No chance, absolutely no chance have we lost hope. Why would there not be belief? Of course, we are disappointed, I’m gutted, the last two weeks have been a real kick in terms of that.

We wake up tomorrow morning, put the gloves back on and go again, keep fighting, and try and pick up points.

But a Blank Gameweek 33 is followed by trips to Chelsea and Manchester United over the final five fixtures, suggesting Fantasy managers are unlikely to be moved by Parker’s fighting talk.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Bellerin (Pepe 68), Holding, Gabriel, Xhaka; Elneny (Partey 68), Ceballos; Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli; Lacazette (Nketiah 70).

Fulham XI (4-4-2): Areola; Aina, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Robinson; Cavaleiro (Bryan 84), Zambo Anguissa, Lemina, Lookman (Reed 69); Maja (Loftus-Cheek 77), De Cordova-Reid.

I’d absolutely love to see these greedy clubs to be relegated with an immediate effect. You can’t possibly click your fingers like that to change the such tradition and break millions of hearts because you want to get richer

Not relegated, just expelled from the football pyramid. You're out, cant get back in.

It's also in the terms of the premier league so the FA definitely has that right

Money is ruining football to some degree but I can't see the European League happening. TV companies have too much power, cynically I think they want football to be more 'entertaining' to compete for viwer space with Netflix, Sky Movies, Apple TV etc. I think it's just these clubs flexing their muscles at UEFA looking for more power in Champions League. It's greedy club owners dictating things, not all the club. Relegating those 6 would just punish the other 14 because they bring in the big bucks to the TV pot that they all get a cut from. A year or two in the Championship and they'll be back in the PL. A European League would be a soulless entity with attendances of mainly rich people and tourists. And no relegation means a lot of dead rubber games with little or no TV appetite. The EU will also not back it.

It must have been planned for a long, long time to be so sudden. Seems like the clubs know what they’re doing though unfortunately. Hopefully they don’t get away with it.

The 6 teams no longer to be recognised as representing their cities and now defunct. New clubs to be set-up with the same names and to become officially recognised as the inheritors of the cubs histories.

As a PL fan, I really couldn't care less about watching Inter, Juve, Real, Barcelona etc. I am simply not interested at all in these kind of games, no matter how much they claim it's about entertaining quality football. European football without trophy is meaningless to me. I would rather watch Burnley defending to save their lives and earn vital points, frustrating the fancy opposition, asking the opposition to find the way against low block, than some glorified friendly game that has no consequence at all.

On the BBC, Sky, in most major newspapers (I hope) over the next few days they'll be lots of airtime and column inches given to attacking this idea (who -none-billionaire of course- in their right mind would come out supporting it?). But will the TV companies and papers, after all this complaining, then start covering the Super League's results, thus legitimizing it? Any boycott by fans should extend to press and media covering it too. Make it disappear completely.

One can only hope. But in the eyes of the owners, the prospects of turning these clubs into global franchises and reach an even bigger audience is worth sacrificing the core fanbase.

Either they report on it or another site does and gets the hits. Similarly BT Sport and Sky could decide not to cover it but someone else will buy the rights and benefit. The majority of the world would just lap it up too. Just feels a gloomy outlook if it happened

When NHS was crippled coping with COVID a lot of staff could not get COVID tests last year. At the same time PL players continued to get regular tests and some players flouted the restrictions and were not prosecuted it tells me that football thinks it's money gives it elite status and it thinks it's above the law. For many clubs, not the majority of them.

I suspect this is ultimately just going to be posturing and a play for maximum leverage in the new Champions League format. I'm not sure they'll go through with it, especially if FIFA, UEFA and the Premier League don't blink and hold tight to the "kick you out + no players in World Cup" position... I'd expect the English clubs ultimately to stay in the Prem and Champions League.
Then again, Barcelona and Real's finances are so f**ked that they may not have any other option than this.

I'd like to see the World Cup cancelled anyway, international football feels irrelevant plus the standard is generally poor.

Love how Arsenal were against Ozil's political stance, but all for Lacazette's

Dont get the displeasure in the formation of the Sups league. Wasnt the EPL formed under similar circumstances? Albeit domestically.

It's the format of the league that is disappointing.

No relegation. Same 15 sides will face each other for years. How dull will that be?

      It's a degradation to football.

Only relegation outside of the 15 founding clubs.

The league will have 20 teams - the 12 founding members plus the three unnamed clubs they expect to join soon and five sides who qualify annually according to their domestic achievements.

That makes it even worse, somehow.

hmmm... i argue similar is happening for the domestic leagues whereby 3 clubs are change annually. This is an upgrade from 3 to 5 aint it? Just being a devil advocate.

truthfully i dont have qualms for the league to be formed. Nor would i be actively supporting it formation. But if it does happen, i will still watch good football. But what perplex me is I dont really get the displeasure.

Most fans of clubs love the excitement and risk of promotion and relegation.

The concept of a giant killing and an underdog run in a competition.

This is the end of that, permanently. This is the thin edge of the wedge into an American style closed competition.

If you understand how European football works and the local ties and bonds and the history, you'll understand how what's happening now is the antithesis of everything fans hold dear.

Admittedly the big teams have started to dominate more and more, but something like Leicester winning the league or West Brom or Reading winning the FA Cup would be removed from football forever.

In that format any of the 20 teams can get relegated.

Here the founding teams (the 15 teams) will never get relegated

Thanks for the replies. Agree if the format remains this way, it will not be ideal in the long run.

However, I believe evolution happens all the time. This to me is an example of evolution or S curve growth. And when the time come, should the Sups league be form - Something along the way will come and change the status quo if the format is found waning.

This super league has been on the cards for some time and will happen. Despite the protesting some of the powers that be will be in on it with the kind of money they are talking about. The clubs are looking at the huge markets further afield eg China who don’t care about the Burnleys of this world. Personally I couldn’t name many European players and have no interest in the Champions league etc but this will happen now or in a few years.

Would be good to see China investing in its own talent - they have a pool of hundreds of millions and still aren't as good as Iceland with a population of 300k

if the ESL does push through, are we expecting that the 6 clubs PL clubs to expelled and banned from playing in the PL?
