Scout Scribbles – Townsend Salvages Draw for England

Andros Townsend helps England to a friendly draw in Italy, as Graziano Pelle opens the scoring for the hosts. Sergio Aguero is amongst the goals for Argentina, Marouane Fellaini nets again for Belgium, whilst Villa could be set to welcome back their skipper ahead of the double Gameweek.

Townsend fires Lions level in Turin

England drew 1-1 against Italy in a largely incident-free friendly last night. Harry Kane failed to replicate his recent scoring heroics – instead, Roy Hodgson’s side had Andros Townsend to thank after the winger sealed a late equaliser for the Three Lions courtesy of an assist from Tottenham team-mate Ryan Mason.

The Scout Says: Hodgson opted for a 4-3-1-2 formation for the Turin fixture, fielding Wayne Rooney behind a front two of Kane and Theo Walcott, backed up by a midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, Phil Jones and Fabian Delph. Kane and Rooney were two of only four outfield players to last the distance against the Azzurri, meaning the latter has now chalked up over 160 minutes of pitch time over the course of the international break – a Fantasy consideration that’s somewhat mitigated by the fact a home tie against Aston Villa is next on the agenda for Manchester United. A dearth of creativity in England’s midfield forced Kane to feed off scraps all night, although he did manage to test Gianluigi Buffon on a couple of occasions. Townsend will hope that his superb 25-yard strike will convince Mauricio Pochettino to hand him a starting berth ahead of a trip to Turf Moor in Gameweek 31. The Spurs winger was subbed off before the hour mark against Leicester City last time out – having failed to register a single shot or key pass in the 4-3 win – so remains prone to rotation with Erik Lamela waiting in the wings.

Pelle ends goal drought with Italy’s opener

Graziano Pelle headed a Giorgio Chiellini cross beyond the outstretched hands of Joe Hart to hand Italy a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of their encounter with England.

The Scout Says: Saints boss Ronald Koeman will be praying that Pelle’s goal against England instills enough confidence in the Italian forward to cast aside his barren league run. The ex-Feyenoord striker hasn’t netted in 13 Gameweeks for the Hamsphire club, prompting Koeman to reinstate Shane Long into the starting line-up in an attempt to rejuvenate their attack. The fixtures, though, are very much in Southampton’s favour – they now face five of the bottom eight (eve, HUL, sun, lei, AVL) in the next seven Gameweeks, handing Pelle the perfect opportunity to build on last night’s momentum as the Saints look to mount a serious challenge for the Champions League spots.

Aguero Notches in Argentina Triumph

The City striker fired an eighth-minute opener as Argentina defeated Ecuador 2-1 in the early hours of this morning. Aguero started the match along with the likes of United pair Marco Rojo and Angel Di Maria before being replaced with 15 minutes remaining and now faces a flight back from New Jersey.

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind that City don’t play Palace until Monday evening, fatigue certainly isn’t an issue here. Aguero’s strike offers hope that he has rediscovered his scoring touch after supplying no more than an assist in his last four league appearances – a run of form which has persuaded over 52,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to part company this week, more than double the number of any forward. With home clashes against West Ham and Villa also in the next four, Aguero certainly has the fixtures to return to form at a time when many are clearly sacrificing him as a means to generate funds ahead of the double Gameweeks.

Fellaini nets again in narrow Belgium win

Marouane Fellaini scored the only goal of the match as Belgium triumphed 1-0 over Group B opponents Israel in their Euro 2016 qualifier, with Eden Hazard providing the assist for the close-range strike. Vincent Kompany was sent off for a second bookable offence just beyond the hour mark.

The Scout Says: If Fellaini can translate his renewed eye for goal from the international stage to the league then he could emerge as viable source of United coverage. A goal and an assist in the Gameweek 29 Tottenham clash offered hope that the former Everton star is starting to rediscover the form that earned him a switch from Goodison Park back in September 2013, yet United’s perilous run-in – which includes three tough away clashes (che, eve, cry) and two well matched home fixtures (MCI, ARS) – limits our enthusiasm over Fellaini’s potential. Nonetheless, at just 6.3 to Juan Mata’s 8.3, he offers a far more budget-friendly route into the Red Devils starting line-up as Louis van Gaal goes in search of a fifth straight win at home to Villa this weekend.

Arsenal quartet nearing return to action

Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Debuchy and Abou Diaby all featured in an Arsenal XI’s 4-0 victory over Brentford as they stepped up their respective rehabilitation programs. Aside from Debuchy – who lasted an hour – the three midfielders were subbed off at half time.

The Scout Says: Given the form of Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, the likes of Arteta and Wilshere face a tough task to re-establish themselves in the Gunners’ starting line-up before the season is out. Both players have failed to feature since Gameweek 12, and with Francis Coquelin’s role as the deep-lying destroyer in front of the back-four affording a better balance in their absence, it’s debatable whether they’ll be afforded anything more than minutes off the bench. Debuchy’s return is the most significant news for Fantasy managers and adds further doubts to Hector Bellerin’s pitch time at right-back. Bellerin has now failed to start the last two league outings, with Arsene Wenger turning to Calum Chambers instead, but once Debuchy is up to full fitness he looks set to be handed a role in Wenger’s starting XI again. At 5.2, the Frenchman could be worth considering when the schedule turns kinder from Gameweek 35 onwards, with one eye on the Gunners’ double Gameweek 37.

Vlaar hopeful on weekend comeback

Ron Vlaar is optimistic he will be available for Aston Villa’s Gameweek 31 clash against Manchester United after stepping up his recovery from a persistent calf strain. The Dutch defender revealed his frustration at being sidelined but harboured hope that the root cause of his recent setbacks had been identified:

“It was really frustrating to have the setback recently. It’s happened a few times this season but I feel good now and I hope to be in for the weekend. Hopefully we’ve found the cause of the problems now.”

The Scout Says: Vlaar’s return to the Villains’ beleaguered rearguard is a massive boost for manager Tim Sherwood in light of their injury travails. With Philippe Senderos, Nathan Baker and Jores Okore all nursing knocks – leaving Ciaran Clark as their only fit centre-half – Sherwood faced a real tactical dilemma in the heart of defence against a buoyant United outfit. The fact that five of Villa’s eight clean sheets have arrived in Vlaar’s 13 appearances this campaign offers encouragement to those managers that have invested in the West Midlanders’ defence ahead of their double Gameweek 31. A shut-out against the Red Devils looks unlikely – considering they’ve only failed to score once in their previous ten league clashes – but Brad Guzan’s 12% ownership could profit from Vlaar’s return in the second of Villa’s double as they entertain QPR at Villa Park.

Larsson notches assist in Stockholm showdown

Sebastian Larsson bagged an assist in Sweden’s 3-1 friendly victory over Iran. The Sunderland midfielder emerged from the bench just before the break and teed up Ola Toivonen for his nation’s third.

The Scout Says: The Wearsiders’ top scoring player in the FPL game, Larsson’s four assists is joint top with Patrick van Aanholt for the club – an indication of his importance to their cause as Dick Advocaat attempts to steer them away from danger. With the Black Cats facing four decent final Stadium of Light fixtures (NEW, CRY, SOU, LEI), Larsson’s creative endeavours could be vital to their prospects – bearing in mind that home clash against Leicester is the first match in their double Gameweek 37, he may yet prove an unlikely end-of-season differential at a price of just 5.4.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

How many DGWK 31 players will you have?

As said on last night's live scoutcast, this is one of the worst double gameweeks on record. QPR face two away games, while Villa face Manchester United and their improved defence.

Personally I've got Austin and that's it.I think many will be in the same boat.

Is it worth investing in more and is doing so fool's gold, as in Gameweek 33 both Villa and QPR have a blank.

This causes me problems down the line as I will only get 10 out in GW33. I need to sell Was next week for Schlupp in prep for GW33 and DGW34, then selling Sanchez for Hazard GW33, which gets 11 out with no hit if I don't get a DGW31 player this week.... Hmm.

        Ha!

I can't recall all the instances now but I think your advice on value being such a determining factor was wrong especially on the example of Davis vs Myhill. Assuming you hold both keepers until the end of the season I would say that Davis' points returns will easily be worth the additional 0.4. I understand the normal argument for diversification but in this case I feel it is redundant.

Think Mark's take on this DGW was very bizarre (admittedly you were against his ideas).

Granville talking about never making transfers with GK unless forced into it. You should never neglect any positions although there are areas of more importance (the variance of highest and lowest score for GKs is narrower than any other position hence being lowest in the pecking order). But as in the example above I have forecasted Davis to outscore Myhill by about 10-15 until end of season (omitting unforeseen instances like injuries, penalty saves, sending off)

I think a lot of players are going to suffer from short termism in the next couple of gameweeks. Funny that Mark was recommending the short term option of Myhill despite saying Davis had the much better run in then advocating two transfers for DGW despite knowing they blank and would struggle to put out an 11 in GW 33

I haven't watched the Scoutcast yet so I can't really weigh in on any of your points other than that you're forecasting Davis to outscore Myhill by 10-15 points. I'd be interested to see your thought process as I can't see there being that big a gap at all.

I make the assumption (though not always correct) that any games against the big 5 (Chelsea,City,Arsenal,United, Liverpool) a team of inferior quality will concede. As a general rule of thumb I assign games like this for good defensive teams as a 3 point game. Rarely do good defensive teams concede more than one and rarely will the keeper get two save points, often they can actually offset each other. So any game where I predict a team will concede is worth 3 points. SOT have one game against City which I expect they will concede. That leaves 7 remaining games.

Over the course of the season SOT have average c 50% clean sheets including almost all the games against the top teams. I think a reasonable estimate would be about 2/3 or 66.67% clean sheet for the games remaining due to the significant decrease in the quality of opponent. So that would be (0.67*7) = 4.69 clean sheets and 2.31 games they will concede (also the game against City makes it 3.31). For a clean sheet I would assign 6 points but then also a 10% premium as you will get occasional save points when keeping a cleanie. So in total a clean sheet is worth 6.6 points. And as above a game where you concede is worth 3.

            Clean sheets = (4.69*6.6) = 30.95
            Games where conceded = (3.31*3) = 9.93
            Davis Total = 40.88

            Myhill Calculations.

            4 games against top 5 @ 3 points a game.

Remaining 4 games, looking at WBA under Pulis they have got 6 clean sheets out of 11 in a run of easy fixtures which would represent a similar level to the games apart from the ones mentioned above. So we can say this is 55% or 0.55. So (0.55*4) is 2.18 clean sheets and 1.82 games they concede (including the 4 games above making it 5.82)

            Clean sheets = (2.18*6.6) = 14.38
            Games where conceded = (5.82*3) = 17.46
            Myhill Total = 31.84

Maybe not as far as 15 as I initially said but I think circa double digits is probable.

Thanks for taking the time to lay all this out.

I like the statistical approach but I'd question the 66.67% clean sheet figure for Southampton's remaining fixtures - I see fewer than that there.

Anyway, you answered my question nicely and I thank you for it 🙂

Re Myhill - the point I made was that with Chelsea dgwk looming price suddenly becomes more important even in a template that has Kane. So for me that extra .4 could be the difference between Ivanovic over Terry or perhaps keeping Aguero and getting Costa. The key to any discussion about value is not to isolate it in terms of one player - that was quite clear I thought. For me I agree Davis may score more than Myhill - but if that extra .4 is used wisely there could be far more points in store across other positions.

DGWK bring out the fun element to the game...it can make people a little crazy 😉

I agree with Granville re gks....they rarely get bonus, they never score or assist. They are the position you want to change as few times as possible. That sounds sensible to me. Goalkeepers are where good planning and wildcard use are key. Last season I had Boruc and Mannone for pretty much the whole season. Key for me is pick two gks that alternate reasonably well, get lots of save points and the chance of clean sheets.

I personally have switched my thinking with the view of having one good keeper and holding. Knowing there are two WCs, you initial keeper and possibly one/two transfers I look at having a keeper for 8 game windows of good fixtures.

I understand your point but there is another way of looking at it using your examples (going on PPG which is not always a good measure to predict with). If you chose Ivano over Terry that is 5.1ppg - 4.4 ppg. a difference of 0.7 ppg. Chelsea have 9 remaining game weeks so that would be 0.7*9 = 6.3 additional points. As I wrote above I think the return on that 0.4 compares to what I have predicted to circa 10 points for the difference in keepers.

And Costa and Aguero..or upgrading Austin to Giroud. With other moves (in my case downgrading Eriksen) that .4 could be the difference of those. the permutations week to week become too much to work out the ppg for each move and transfer in or out...or even captaincy.

Also in my case I have Pantilimon...who as said in the Scoutcast I think will do well given Sunderland's appearance of new defensive resolve. Plus and this is crucial Pantilimon is a top saver in the league and has a double gameweek. There is an argument that playing Davis over Pantilimon in the double would lose points.

I like your points though - its interesting, but that level of point analysis becomes tricky when you factor in the sort of permutations over time above.

For me goalkeepers are poor scorers compared to others so I want to spend as little as possible but at the same time get the chance of save and cs pts. Its just one way of playing the game, there are of course many others.

Another point to make is that you need to factor in save points. That's important for goalkeepers obviously.

If we look at say Davis a good comparison would be Forster...it would seem likely that he will be called on to the same degree as Forster given the better defence Southampton has over Sunderland's. But Pantlimon has 22 save points over the season, compared to Forster's 12. That's 10 points over the season so far already. There's less games left, but how many more save points will Davis get over Pantilimon...considerably less if the previous gwks is anything to go by.

I like to call this tactic "the David James"...in my first FPL season I picked him while at Portsmouth because I'd heard of him mainly. Turns out he was a goal mine of save points, plus cheap.

I was talking up two transfers for the DGW just because it's more fun to discuss the options. I did say that I'm likely to opt for the Naughton option and reserve the two - I was really just getting carried away for the sake of the ScoutCast. Plus i was dosed up on flu relief 😉

As for Davis vs Myhill - I said the former had a better run-in but Myhill had the two easier fixtures in the short-term - that's valid, particularly with many of us having Dawson injured.

Great that you listen so intently by the way - good to get feedback.

        QPR
        LEICESTER

        SWANSEA
        leicester
        WEST BROM
        qpr
        WEST HAM

My take on the Kane/Aguero armband debate (for non Austin owners in particular):

Both have decent shot stats and both are playing opposition who concede a relatively high amount of shots inside and out.

        The differentials for selection are:

Kane - on form, and Aguero clearly isn't.
Aguero - his team generally create more shooting opportunities away from home, and Spurs don't.

        Tough call.

The key to moving up is picking the right one the moment they come into form. I'm going Aguero and haven't had a captaincy fail for quite a while.

            Interesting, cheers.

I am leaning towards Aguero as Spurs' away attacking stats are cause for concern.

My rival will almost certainly captain Austin anyway, and my ML is all that is left for me to worry about, so it might be largely irrelevant!

"...the moment they come into form..."

I always have a problem with this idea because people usually mean FPL form and FPL form doesn't exist. Form is how well a player is doing on the field. Sometimes this translates into FPL points and sometimes it doesn't. FPL points are a combination of actual playing form (player and his team) and happenstance or luck.

I know that you are using a kind of shorthand but "is in good form which hasn't shown up in goals/assists recently" is probably more accurate?

In my view, the problem with Aguero isn't form, it is position. Since Bony returned from ACON, City have returned to the 4-2-2-2 which Pellegrini seems wedded to. That means Aguero playing deeper and most of "his" usual chances have been falling to Bony/Dzeko. As a comparison, City played 4-2-2-2 in the last 8 games of last season (after Aguero returned from an injury) and during those 8 games Dzeko scored 6 goals and Aguero scored 2.

It is also the case that Aguero has a historic tendency to score more goals in the 1st half of the season than the 2nd half if you look over the last 4 seasons. This could easily be coincidental but players do seem to have repeating patterns with things like this.

If you look at a strike map of Aguero's goals this season, most have been from the 6-12 yard range and central. With 4-2-2-2 he has still been getting shots away but many more of them have been from further out and/or wider. That's the issue. Aguero is a good player in decent form I think but although he's well capable of scoring in any given week the overall affect of 4-2-2-2 is limiting his FPL potential. That's my take on it anyhow.

Strangely enough, I'd be more happy to captain him for the Manchester derby next week than against Palace this week. Against United there is a better chance that Pellegrini will play 4-2-3-1 with Aguero at the point (as he often does in "big" games). And Aguero also has a good scoring record against United (6 goals in the last 7 games). Of all PL opponents he has only scored more goals against West Ham than he has against United.

Ok, Eriksen is going one way or another, Kane is plenty Spurs cover.

So, punt on a DGW player (Sinclair), which will mean I only get 10 out hit free in GW33..

        or

Eriksen>Fellaini for Villa home, then next two transfers sell Was and Sanchez which gets me 11 out GW33 and three DGW34 players in the bank ready (Was>Schulpp, Sanchez>Hazard, got Costa)

In a bit of a quandary here chaps: Have had Austin most of the season but got rid last week for Giroud. Been second in my mini-league for months and the guy ahead of me never had Austin. He drafted him in last week, and will now have him for the DGW - very probable he'll captain him, too.

My front three is Giroud - Kane - Aguero.

Do I transfer Giroud out for the week and bring in Austin to cancel out the leader, or do I just do Boyd to Philips and hope for the best?

Save or shift Bellerin to a WBA defender or Naughton
