Captain Sensible – Gameweek 38

For the final time this season, our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders, arrives in time to guide the armband thinking. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the captaincy conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero leads the way in this week’s Captain Poll, with over 35% of the votes cast. The City striker faces a Southampton side that’s picked up a single point in their last six away matches and has scored in each of his last three at the Etihad, including the 23-point haul against QPR in Gameweek 36. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are looking for a seventh straight win in front of their own supporters and have been in fine scoring form, netting at least twice in their previous six home matches.

Christian Benteke is next in line with almost 18% backing. The Belgian has racked up 11 goals, an assist and 15 bonus points in his last ten ahead of a home clash with Burnley, but with next weekend’s FA Cup final also to consider, there remains a slight fear that Benteke’s minutes could be managed come Sunday.

Alexis Sanchez sits just behind the Belgian in third spot ahead of Arsenal’s home encounter with West Brom. The Chilean’s form is a concern, however – he’s scored in just one of his last six, whilst Arsenal have failed to net in their previous three at the Emirates. Bearing in mind that the Baggies have four clean sheets in five, Sanchez will need to up his form considerably. Like Benteke, there’s also the possible threat of rotation ahead of the Wembley final to factor in.

Eden Hazard takes fourth place for Chelsea’s clash with Sunderland. There’s no doubt that his 6% of votes were accrued prior to the news that that he’s undergone emergency dental surgery – a factor that makes him a serious doubt for Sunday’s encounter. Although he’s scored just once in his last five, three of those matches have been away – Hazard has netted in three of his previous four at the Bridge and, if available, could emerge as an armband differential. The Black Cats defence will be no pushover, however, as they arrive in West London off the back of three successive shut-outs.

Further down our poll listing, Hazard’s team-mate, Diego Costa has emerged as another potential differential. Unlike the Belgian, he looks certain to start against Dick Advocat’s side, although, with Cesc Fabregas and perhaps Hazard missing, there are question marks about Costa’s likely ammunition, as well as his sharpness in front of goal following injury.

Romelu Lukaku is also amongst the chasing pack after producing two goals and an assist in his last three. Only just under 3% are willing to consider him for the armband, though visitors Spurs have been defensively dire on the road and managed just three clean sheets.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

spurs are looking very poor. if the supporting cast (the "co") are not going to turn up, then kane on his own, just isn't going to deliver

Chasing down a 25 point deficit, probably got a miniscule chance... what do you think of these transfers....

Walcott and Ulloa for Gomez and Giroud

As far as I know, ML leader has neither.

The plan is Wally 11 points and Ulloa (c) 26 points

    😀

Keeping Hazard. Midf's in GW 38 is a lottery. No way of calling that correct.

I have a very bad feeling about Lukaku.

                  Probably getting Tekkers in.

Fair enough. I'd captain Tekkers then if you don't go Aguero. Much more focal to his team's attack compared to Vardy. And I own Vardy and not Tekkers...

      OK, here we go...

      1. Jose wants Hazard to play and planned for him to play. Only medical advice will prevent it.
      2. Eden wants to play before collecting his first PL medal. Only medical advice will prevent it.
      3. Normal recovery period for what he had done is 2 days, or "a few days" for strenuous activity.
      4. He doesn't have an injury that can be made worse.
      5. Mourinho "hoped he would play" on Friday but wasn't sure if he'd be OK. That was 2 days after the procedure, 2 further days have passed since then.

Add all that together and to me it says he'll play more likely than not. Maybe coming on as a sub for the last half-hour, maybe starting and playing 60/70 minutes, maybe even playing the full 90. As long as your bench is in decent shape to cover his absence if it happens I wouldn't be shedding him, specially not for a -4.

As someone who would probably need to take a hit to remove Hazard I like all of this, regardless, do you think he's likely to be in the points if he does play? He looked out of sorts last week.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 12 days ago

Well... I think the Chelsea players will want to win in style before the PL trophy presentation. Sunderland will be coming down from 2 huge performances in the last week where they will have put every ounce of physical and mental energy in.

The game could be a damp squib but the mood at Stamford Bridge will be so high that it's unlikely. If Chelsea get an early goal it could become a bloodbath and you can't see Hazard missing out really. I'd captain him 100% if I was sure he'd start.

Thanks Ruth, appreciate your opinion. I had him as captain at the start of the week but was at the Hawthorns on Monday and was shocked by the performance. I realise this weekend is a completely different situation but it was enough to put me off. Still, your comments make me a bit happier about keeping hold of him - certainly I can't see someone worth a hit.

heard from numerous sources recovery is more than a few days. also his teeth got infected which is even worse. he won't be able to eat solids for a while, maybe 3-4 days.

he might still play or make a cameo but he won't be in 100% shape if he does

Interesting, thanks Ruth. My worry is I have Okore (big injury doubt), PVA & Dawson (bad fixtures), 3 Arsenal mids (possible rest for some) and Hazard. If Hazard doesn't end up playing, I may end up having to play both PVA and Dawson. Possibly even 10 men if Okore and an Arsenal mid or two get rested. I think Hazard would've been likely to play if there wasn't an infection, but that's put some doubt in my mind...

        1. djenzio
          • 9 Years

yeah it's the infection that worries me.

the risk with playing him is he gets a 5min cameo just to retain his record of playing every game.

        2. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

Yes, Innsie, there is some doubt. But I'd take the track of using your FT to improve your bench to handle any eventualities.

Maybe Dawson or PvA to Schlupp or Morgan? That would give you Kane, Okore, PvA/Dawson on the bench to cover eventualities. Is Okore an injury doubt? I didn't see anything?

Great season by the way, well done. 🙂

Yeah that could be a smart move actually. I'll keep mulling it over. Okore seems unlikely to play judging by Sherwood's comments (http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2015/05/22/aston-villa-injury-update-featuring-kieran-richardson-and-jores/) which is a real pain as I got him in specifically for this fixture.

Thanks Ruth, very impressive first season you're having too 🙂

Thanks but will it be so near but yet so far? 😕

Fabregas' red put me 3 points short of the 10k mark but I have also had to take a hit as a result. That means I need to make up 7-8 points on the 10k average this week as I'd really like a top 10k finish. I think my team is good enough to do that if I can nail the captain but I'm still uncertain (which is unlike me).

Aguero, Lukaku, Hazard. Who do you reckon? At the moment I'm going with Lukaku.

              1. President John F. Keninnsie
                • 10 Years
                9 years, 12 days ago

Aguero I reckon. Saints defence just isn't the same without Forster and Schneiderlin, I predict a goal and assist for Aguero. Lukaku is a good shout as Spurs defence is very poor too, but he's very inconsistent so I'd still have doubts trusting him with the armband. Hazard is too risky.

                1. Ruth_NZ
                  • 9 Years
                  9 years, 12 days ago

Yep. Hazard is too risky unless I hear for sure he'll play.

Aguero is the safe pick. But Aguero has only ever scored once against them in 3 seasons. What swings me towards Lukaku is that Spurs' defence is so poor away recently.

If I captain Aguero I basically take captaincy out of the equation and will need my team to make up 7-8 points elsewhere. I guess Sigurdsson, Lukaku, Vlaar, Cambiasso would be my main differentials. If I captain Lukaku and he out-scores Aguero I should be home and hosed.

Good luck to us both tomorrow anyhow. Maybe you can be the guy with the longest stretch of red arrows to ever finish top 1k. 😀

    keep getting bottom of page:

I am chasing my rival who is 15 points ahead, he has almost definitely done Hazard ---> Silva. What's best for me to catch him?

    A: Hazard + Kane —> Bolasie + Costa (-4)
    B: Hazard + Kane —> Mata + Lukaku (-4)

Our current differentials (Me vs Him):
Rose, Koscielny, Cazorla, Benteke, My Haz/Kane Replacements vs Skrtel, Silva, Schmeicel, Austin, Ozil, Kane

if you just want to retain your spot, pick the highest owned players that you dont have. that at least reduces the chance for others to overtake you. in your team i think its Kane, Terry, Ivan, Bellerin which are the highest owned

I've got Mignolet, Wollscheid, Ivanovic, Koscielny, Yaya, Silva, Ramsey, Bolasie, Benteke, Ulloa, Costa for the last round. Who do you think guys would be the best pick for captain considering i am trying to put a miracle out there to melt a 50 pts difference with the 1st in private league and in the same time the 3rd is very close to me but i am not worried about getting either 2nd or 3rd the only thing on my mind is the 1st atm however impossible it looks like. I am considering one from Benteke, Costa, Yaya or Silva to wear the armbrand what are your thoughts? Keep in mind that i am having 9 different players than the 1st team and his captain 99% will be Aguero so i am looking for a non-scoring game for Kun + atleast 2 for my captain hopefully. So Silva isn't scoring that much as he's assisting, Costa is in unclear form so my choice is between Benteke and Yaya i guess.Tough one keeping in mind that Benteke have the FA Cup final ahead and i am guessing he won't push it too hard tommorow especially after both teams play for nothing.

        Thats what I thought.

        Rest of my team:

        Kos, Cahill, McCauley
        Silva, Coutinho, Sanchez, Caz
        Aguero, Kane, Vardy

        Bench: Trippier, Sinclair, Wollschied.

Tfr Sinclair for Bolasie and keep him first on the bench?

40 points down to rival last week cut to an achievable 11 but still chasing.

Very similar teams so he seems to have me covered in most areas.

To close the 11 points should I

A: Take a single punt or take 1 hit for double punts.

    or

    B: Punt on captain

With one freebie, I am chasing opponents with 13 and 15 point leads. I need advice on the best transfers to make so that I can stand a chance of winning my minileage.
Opponent with 15 point lead (potentially no goalkeeper for him bt I fear Bolassie)
    Guzan (Speroni)
    Coleman Bertrand Hutton (Wisdom Azpili)
Sanchez Downing Carzola Bolassie (Jones of Burnley)
    Aguero Kane Benteke

The second opponent (potentially no keeper too but I fear Silva)
    De Gea (Jakupovic)
    Moreno Ivanovic Rose (Blacket Azpili)
Sanchez Henderson Cazorla Silva (Cant recall 5th mid)
    Austin Kane Giroud

    My team is
    Schmeichel (Pants)
    Bellerin Ivan PVA (Yun Upson)
    Sanchez Coutinho Gerrard Mahrez Hazard
    Aguero Giroud (Defoe)

Which transfer should I make? Both have done 1 transfer.
I am about to do only Hszsrd to Silva somebody stop me..
