Team of the Season – Hector Bellerin

After establishing himself as Arsenal’s first-choice right-back towards the end of 2014/15, Hector Bellerin further enhanced his burgeoning reputation with a series of eye-catching displays at both ends of the pitch. The young Spaniard’s raids down the right culminated in his inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year and saw him rise to top spot in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender standings in the final Gameweek of the season.

THE STATISTICS

While Arsene Wenger’s side got off to a slow start, it quickly became clear their defence was going to be one of the more reliable for Fantasy managers to lean on, picking up an impressive six clean sheets between Gameweeks 3 and 11. Bellerin also registered two assists over this period, and subsequently saw his price rise from 5.5 to 5.9 in FPL.

A further 11 shut-outs over the next 25 matches ensured Bellerin remained one of the leading options for our five-man backlines throughout the season, with the Barcelona youth product also adding a further goal and three assists in terms of attacking returns.

FPL bosses were spoilt for choice from the Arsenal rearguard, with Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal also regular starters in a backline that had racked up an impressive 18 clean sheets. Indeed, the trio sit in three of the top four defender spots in FPL, with Bellerin (172) bettering both Koscielny (153) and Monreal (152) at the summit.

In terms of bonus points, Bellerin managed to register a reasonable 18, ranking him joint-fourth among defenders along with team-mate Koscielny. The latter held the edge in terms of goal threat, though, and outscored his team-mate by four to one.

THE PROSPECTS

Having started 36 league outings this season, Bellerin’s guaranteed pitch time and attacking potential will certainly earn him a price hike for next season. After beginning last year at 5.5 to Koscielny’s 6.0, he now looks set to mirror the Frenchman’s valuation next time out and with the calming influence of Petr Cech behind them, there could even be a rise to 6.5 on the cards.

Bellerin appears to have little competition for the right-back spot, with Mathieu Debuchy looking to have no future at the club after being loaned out to Bordeaux in January, while Calum Chambers seems no more than back-up. Koscielny and Monreal seem as similarly nailed-on and there’d be no surprise if all three were afforded the same price tag for 2016/17.

Having only kept 13 clean sheets during the 2014/15 season, the addition of Petr Cech has certainly had the desired effect on the Gunners backline, and the likelihood is that their defensive unit will remain one of the more productive on offer for Fantasy managers heading into next season. Indeed, Arsenal’s 18 clean sheets this term is more than any other side, though United could equal that tally if they keep out Bournemouth tonight

Certainly, from a value perspective, we’d ideally hope for the battle between Gabriel and Per Mertesacker to be resolved next season. The pair started 18 and 24 league matches respectively last time out and will therefore be priced cheaper than the above-mentioned trio – if either one can secure the role next to Koscielny, the Gunners’ increased resilience would considerably boost their Fantasy appeal.

For those Fantasy managers keen to find a position for at least one premium defender at the start of next season, Bellerin’s attacking potential could yet justify a premium price tag. In the final third, he sits first amongst defenders for both touches and passes completed and takes second place for passes received. Given that he surprisingly managed only 23 chances created and three shots on target (from 13 attempts), it’s arguable that there is plenty of scope for further improvement next time around.

As says the FFS article from yesterday. So it should be similar to UCL game, where you can sub players in and change captain between gamedays.

I'm not sure the two are that linked tbh, Sinclair didn't want to sign a new contract, apparently wanted far too much money. Although, I think there were whispers that Liverpool got a better deal for Zielinksi as a result of Sinclair signing for Watford. Pretty sure they were resigned to losing him anyway though.

    Piggs Boson

Defenders seem to do a decent job of competing with the top strikers. Remember, there is no bonus in this game, so a defender CS and a striker goal are completely equal in pts.

    ............................Golden boot.........................Cleanest Sheets

    Euro 2012........ Torres - 3 goals.......................Spain - 5 CSs
    Euro 2008.........Villa - 4 goals..........................Spain - 3 CSs
    Euro 2004.........Baros - 5 goals........................Greece - 3 CSs
    Euro 2000.........Kluivert/Milošević - 5 goals......Italy/Netherlands/Portugal - 3 CSs
    Euro 1996.........Shearer - 5 goals.....................France/Netherlands - 3 CSs

Defenders can also get attacking pts on top of the 4pt CSs of course, so they have terrific potential (Alba wagon). 3 heavy strikers are important imo, but saving some money in midfield to upgrade some defenders is worth a thought, at least.

    (Side thought: '96 was 20 years ago 🙁 )

This is a great post. So easy to get lulled into picking the big names. Having a great front 8 feels sexier, but a good defence will get you points consistently. Only thing I would add is that there are more mismatches this year than usual with the ridiculous number of teams, so might be a few more goals than usual.

agree with this normally, but let's not forget that Euro 2016 will have some of the worst teams (relatively) to qualify for such a tournament before given that 24 of Europe's 52 countries have qualified. Strikers could score more against such teams.

Great point - a sexy back 5 of Alba, Dier, Fuchs, Hector, Rodriguez could score massively - strikers look good too, it's the midfield that looks a bit uninspiring so far and prob the best area for cutbacks - likes of Coman Perisic and Alli are handy for saving cash

Actually, have another inspired moment now, I could bank on Carvajal starting, and do Kane>Muller. Worth it? Carvajal was arguably the best RB in the world for the past few months.

I think the problem with Sagna and Koscielny is that France will have easy games and people will be rested for sure. As for Portugal, they're crap, but I don't think they're crap enough to fail to progress from that group. Plus, a lot of their players are in form recently. I'm only going for Patricio and Ronaldo though because they're the only guarantees of anything.

France group looks quite even and low scoring to me. Albania is a tough nut and Romania will set their team up very defensively, while when France smashed Switzerland it was with Benzema and an extremely in form Valbuena, neither is around this time. They will not have it easy.

Portugal I agree. Ronaldo definitely my captain.

I don't mean that Romania won't lose the group. Just that they won't necessarily concede as much as you hope. And the rest of the matches can go either way.

The whole injured defence, but ok, they're not available. Forwards: Lacazette, Fekir, Gameiro, Dembelé. Midfielders: Guilavogui, Rabiot, Grenier, Tolisso, even Ribéry, Kondogbia and Imbula. basically, they've got only two creative players: Pogba and Payet. Coman at stretch. In defence, Mathieu and Mangala are the worst backup CB pair in the tournament and Jallet must be there because he's a nice guy. Even with all the injuries, they could have taken Perrin, Hernandez, Corchia, Debuchy, and such.

Fair point with Gamiero. Lacazette has a poor season. Fekir was injured for most of it and didn't recover too well. Fair shout with Ribery and Tolisso. But even then, which of those would break into this lineup? Only Ribery, imo.

Lol. Massive issues if they played like that and they won't.

                        Lloris
                        Sagna Koscielny Varane Evra
                        Pogba Diarra Matuidi
                        Griezmann Gignac Payet

And it's fine, although not as great as it would be with, say, Benzema upfront, but the point is that a good starting XI only gets you through the first one or two matches. then you need some depth. And if Pogba gets suspended, they'll have Sissoko, if Koscielny, then it's Mangala. the drop is massive.

You have a point there, but I think the versatility in their frontline would help them with creating plays, most of that front three can play any attacking position. As for the defense, I think they're fine with the quality CMs in front of them.

Maybe. Their defence has been strangely shaky, in set pieces in particular. And in conceding them: they concede almost twice as many good set piece opportunities as other big nations. The three upfront moving around worked fine with Ribery-Benzema-Valbuena, but Giroud and Gignac will be quite directly CF's, and even if they move well, I'm not (yet) convinced there will be similar mobility in that attack. Plus, when Valbuena and Griezmann played together, it was horror. Not for the opponent. And it may end up like that with Griezmann-Payet as well. There's every chance that Coman will turn out to be their most important player after a couple of matches, if he can solve that attack puzzle.

Exactly for that mobile front three that you mention, I think Coman could turn out to be the savior if they initially struggle, as I think they will.

Muller for Germany is a different beast. He's the first name on my team sheet and as close to essential as you can get imo. Much prefer him to Kane

For this game you should be targeting a strong 14 or 15 players since you can sub out someone who hasn't performed. E.g. if Kos doesn't keep a cleanie in the first game, you can sub him out for Altintop (provided the formation is still valid). I'd aim for 15 playable players especially in the group stages

Here's a section of the ffscout article:

          "SUBSTITUTIONS

Although we can construct our benches to utilise the autosubs option, the official UEFA offering favours a hands-on approach and allows Fantasy managers to make changes to our line-ups between Gamedays in any given Matchday.

If one of your starters doesn’t perform or isn’t selected, then, you can swap them out and bring in a replacement off the bench later in the Matchday. It’s also worth bearing in mind that we’re likely to get an idea on the lineups from the early kick-offs each day, affording Fantasy managers the chance to hold fire until the teams are announced before subbing out any under-achievers.

Similarly, when it comes to selecting captains, you have the option to “stick or twist” on each Gameday – by removing the armband from any player, though, you will lose their double points. The above scenarios only apply if the player in question is not sent off, however; any player who receives a red card cannot be subbed out of your starting XI – the situation can be all the more frustrating if your captain happens to be the man dismissed."

I think these prices are pretty ludicrous. You can't grab a decent midfielder for less than 7.0, or a decent striker for less than 8.0.

I don't think it's too bad. Italy and England have some bargains. Teams like Austria, Russia, Switzerland and Sweden have good budget players. Targeting the cheapest defender for each country that you are looking at (since no bonus) also helps

            Think they got that wrong...

"All transfers must be made by the matchday deadline in order to take effect for that set of matches.

Deadlines are subject to change and will be at the time of kick-off of the first match of the matchday.

            Gameweek Deadline
            Matchday 1 10 June 21.00
            Matchday 2 15 June 15.00
            Matchday 3 19 June 21.00
            Matchday 4 25 June 15.00
            Matchday 5 30 June 21.00
            Matchday 6 06 July 21.00
            Matchday 7 10 July 21.00"

Hey GB, from my experience all euro and wc fantasy games allow for dynamic subs. When I read the rules, I thought they removed it for this Euro and I got very disappointed. But after reading the ffscout article, I checked out the "how to play" section which states the following:

              "3. Manage team
Your team will be locked only when the first match of the day starts, so you can make any changes you need to your team until the scheduled start of the match – you can transfer/substitute players depending whether it's a transfer or substitution period.

You can make unlimited transfers before the first game of the tournament and knockout stage. However, during the tournament you will have limited number of transfers.

The substitution period will be available between gamedays where you can replace a starting XI player with a bench player."

              http://eurofantasy.uefa.com/en/fantasy16/how-to-play

I believe each matchday follows the schedule you posted, but every day that there is a game is a gameday and in between you are allowed to make subs. Basically the same as always.

I'm not seeing where this is stated. Can you quote it here?

I think a gameweek spans several gamedays. And a gameweek and a matchday are the exact same. However a gameDAY is each day that a euro cup game is played and between those you can make subs. Otherwise why would the state a transfer period vs a substitution period?

Roscola is manfully attempting to correspond with the rule-writers to get a definitive answer. Rather him than me - they appear to communicate entirely in riddles.

As far as I can work out, the use Gameweek, Matchday and Gameday interchangeably and when they talk about substitution they mean ordering your bench for the next Gameweek/Matchday/Gameday.

On the Rules page rather than How To Play, it makes it clear that substitutions are autosubs a la FPL.

This is also what I thought but it is not consistent with the past few WC/Euro fantasy games. Maybe I'm being hopeful but to me it seems like dynamic subs are available for this game as it has been in the past. Just like UCL fantasy.

Gameweek and gameday are also not used interchangeably. That would be an assumption. In fact the word gameday was not mentioned once on the rules page. And it would make sense that a gameweek consists of several gamedays. The rules also do not state anything about auto subs being the only subs. The heading for that section simply says prioritizing your bench for auto subs.

I think the "rules" section on the website contradicts the "how to play" section.

I agree with this somewhat. At first, I only read the rules and thought dynamic subs have been removed but the how to play section clearly states they haven't. The rules do not mention substitutions outside of auto subs so it doesn't contradict it necessarily just omits it

Have you ever played UCL fantasy? It's basically the same thing. Over the course of a matchday, if you have a player playing each gameday, you can change your captain 4 times. It helps to split your players in such a manner. It also helps to target the first game on each given gameday as the lineups will be out before the deadline. That way you will know for sure whether your new captain and the player you sub in is playing. Of course if you nail the captaincy on the first try, then you do not change anything

Definitely easier. You almost always have a captain with 6 pts or greater since you have so many chances at it. You usually end up with a backline that does very well. I actually think most of the dream teams for a given matchday have 4 or 5 defenders. And you get two shots at choosing a goalie. The tough part is getting a balanced side with the budget

Makes it hard to win a league right? Someone could rob it from you with a captaincy change...kinda takes the luck/skill factor out of it if I'm reading it right...

Not necessarily. I think I've won all my WC/Euro minileagues going back to WC 2010. Like Konig said, it favors those who are active. The whole game evens out over the span of the tournament since its basically like we have 7 fpl gameweeks. So while one gameweek/matchday a rival may luck out with captaincy, they won't always be that lucky

They've been playing very young defence lines recently, but I'd expect them to return to Boateng-Hummels CB pair for the Euro and probably Höwedes on LB, and then it's probably solid again.

They have loads of good fullbacks, particularly LBs. Joachim Löw just went with the usual selections.

..but there's even a chance of Mustafi/Rüdiger playing RB too. They'd all be OOP at RB anyway so it's anyones guess who plays there.

Höwedes shouldn't play unless there's injuries. He's had a highly disrupted season for Schalke 04, is very slow, and arguably not even their best defender anyway. Hector's been the established first choice LB for the past year or two despite a certain poster seemingly thinking he's some squad player. 😆

      Even I wouldn't pick McClean..

Rodriguez could become Schar if ya need the funds.
      Payet might not play.
Most of it looks good 🙂

He's not starting. Keeping him on the bench.

        Payet >> ??

Do you expect Martial to feature?

5 points or more my rival wins our ML.
Anything less I win our ML.

      Assuming he has Martial?

I personally think he will won't play but as we know; LVG is capable of anything!!

If he features then I think he will get 5 or more points!

    1. Anyone knows if Cedric is nailed on for Portugal?
    2. Other than Boateg and Hummels, any other German defender nailed on?
    3. Is Vardy nailed on for England?

Personally, I'm surprised if he's nailed before Höwedes.
