Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Slovakia

Group B’s underdogs are UEFA European Championship new boys Slovakia, who open their campaign against Wales at 5pm on Saturday, June 11, before facing Russia at 2pm four days later and then England at 8pm on Monday, June 20.

The side bears comparison with Russia, with age and a lack of defensive pace, alongside a heavy reliance on counter-attacking football, likely to be a hindrance.

Underestimating Slovakia would be foolish, though – in their international tournament debut, the 2010 World Cup, they knocked out defending champions Italy on their way to the last 16, whilst a 2-1 defeat of Spain in qualifying confirmed a taste for big-name scalps.

THE ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

That home victory over Spain ended an eight-year undefeated period in qualification matches for La Roja, part of a superb early run when Slovakia won their first six group matches on the spin.

Things got a little jittery after that, with a draw, two defeats and no goals in their next three fixtures, before a 4-2 win in Luxembourg secured second spot in the group, five points adrift of Spain.

Coach Jan Kozak consistently sets up his side in a 4-2-3-1 formation designed to sit deep and hit opponents on the counter, and it worked well enough for his defence to keep four clean sheets and concede eight goals in ten qualifiers.

The big question mark remains Slovakia’s ability to adapt their tactics should they fall behind and it will be a surprise if they can muster enough resilience and offensive firepower to find their way out of Group B.

Over the last 12 months, Slovakia have played five friendlies, winning against Switzerland, Iceland and Georgia, and drawing with Latvia and Republic of Ireland. Kozak’s troops have netted at least twice in four of those fixtures, though managed just a single clean sheet.

Most Appearances Matus Kozacik, Marek Hamsik (10), Tomas Hubocan, Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka, Viktor Pecovsky (9), Martin Skrtel, Peter Pekarik, Vladimir Weiss (8), Miroslav Stoch, Adam Nemec (7)

Most Goals Marek Hamsik (5), Adam Nemec (3); Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka (2).

Most Assists Vladimir Weiss (6); Adam Nemec, Miroslav Stoch (2); Marek Hamsik, Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka, Stanislav Sestak, Peter Pekarik (1).

THE KEY TARGETS

Slovakia’s chief attacking threat comes from playmaker Marek Hamsik. The Napoli man is now 28 and close to his peak – he fired more attempts than any team-mate in qualifying, with five qualifying goals making him the squad’s top scorer. Priced at 7.5 in the official Uefa game, Hamsik recorded six strikes and 11 assists in Serie A last season and is almost certain to be the Slovaks’ most popular pick.

Former Manchester City wide man Vladimir Weiss (6.5) also caught the eye in qualifying, with six assists the joint-best return across the competition. Stationed on the left, Weiss created more chances than any team-mate in qualifying and is afforded a fair share of corner kicks. His ability to take on and beat opponents should also draw fouls and earn points in the Draft Kings game.

Lone striker Adam Nemec (6.5) featured in seven of the team’s ten group fixtures, scoring three times and providing one assist. Having also bagged a brace against Georgia on Friday evening, he looks to have strengthened his position as first-choice lone striker under Kozak.

In central midfield, Juraj Kucka (6.0 in Uefa) offers good all-round potential in the mid-price bracket. The AC Milan man was second only to Hamsik for attempts over the qualifiers and found the net twice, whilst he also made more successful tackles than any team-mate, heightening his Draft Kings potential.

THE LONG SHOTS

With Martin Skrtel setting you back 5.5, full-backs Tomas Hubocan and Peter Pekarik (both 5.0) are the cheapest of the nailed-on options in a somewhat unconvincing defence. As the team’s most productive full-back for successful tackles and key passes, the former looks likely to offer some value in the Draft Kings game. Keeper Matus Kozacik comes in are just 4.5 in Uefa, though, and played a part in all ten matches in the qualifiers.

Right winger Robert Mak (6.0) will struggle for our attentions, though he did manage a goal and two assists on the road to France. Mak’s attacking stats – double-figures for both shots and key passes – afford a degree of optimism, whilst the former Man City youth player also shares corner duties with Weiss and is top by some distance for crosses.

Upcoming Friendlies

Germany vs Slovakia (May 29), Slovakia vs Northern Ireland (June 4)

All of these summer competitions, I plan it after GW2, but then end up keeping it, and WC before the finals, when I don't really need it. 😆

There's basically only two real options, after GW1 or after GW2, because you get unlimited transfers before round of 16, and after that everyone will have pretty much the same team, and there will be no major movement through the ranks. If my team fails in the GW1, I'll wildcard immediately

What about after round of 16? You only get 4 free transfers and 8 teams are going out of competition.

Right, how to screw this lot up today..

    R.Patricio - Randolph
    R.Rodriguez - Juanfran - Hector - Dragovic - Denayer/Sapunaru
    Ozil - Calhanoglu/Perisic - Grosicki - Alaba - Mak
    Muller - Griezmann(C) - Milik/Janko/S.Long

Would love to get Alba in for Juanfran, not sure about Hector from the start..

Many going for Griezmann? Just not sure who else I'd want from the French lineup and I fancy them to put in a good group stage.

Carvajal out of the Euros, you could say Juanfran is a sure lock now. And I like the Griezmann pick - he is the only one nailed to play in the front three for France, I'd say.

Avoid Calhanoglu. A mean freekick aside, he is a very mediocre footballer. Not a fan of Grosicki either, would prefer Alli ahead of him.

      8.5/10 😉

I don't like the look of Croatia at all for the tournament.
Their FA and fans are at loggerheads at the moment. They have some unbelievably good players, but a crap manager owned by a corrupt FA and no team spirit. Hence the Calhanoglu pick 😉 Might just look elsewhere entirely.

Grosicki is in to "cover" (I know, I know..) the expensive Lewandowski.

I have the same doubts about Croatia, IM. Exactly why I have kept Perisic out of my team.
As for Polish players, it is Lewandowski or nothing for me sorry. They're not the best team, but Lewandowski is a class apart. One of the most clinical strikers I've seen in the recent times, and I can see him scoring most of their goals, if not all.

There's always the top heavy option, skimping on the defence:

            R.Patricio - Randolph
            Juanfran - Sapunaru - Dragovic - Denayer - Kadlec
            Ozil - R.Brady - Grosicki - Alaba - Mak
            Muller - Griezmann(C) - Lewandowski

                Don't really like Perisic...

Not sure who I'd drop out of the front three for Janko.

Griezmann - other options are expensive rotation risks

Muller - always up there for top scorer, highly owned.

Lewandowski - main man for Poland, most qualifying goals

Well, who do you think is the most underrated footballer in the Premier League right now?

My vote goes to Steven Davis - he is what you call an ''anti-celebrity''. And he has already had an above average career. Great young years at Villa, one of the best at Rangers in a succesful spell, and then one of the most consistent players for Soton since their promotion - we see the names of Mane, Fonte, Bertrand and Wanyama mentioned so often, but Davis has had a substantial amount of goals/assists each of those four seasons. And not to forget, captain of this NI team which has punched above its weight recently. Guess he will end his career at Rangers.

I agree with your assessment of Steven Davis . A good player to have for Southampton.

However , my pick for the most underrated footballer in the PL goes to Eriksen. His game is so much more than just goals and assists. He is one of the best pressing AMs in the league and Spurs is the best team for him. 🙂

I was looking at him recently. He was among the top 11 players on chances created last season. Koeman likes him - " he’s a key player, a quiet player, but his experience, his composure on the ball is important for the team" - and starts him regularly in the #10 role.

The big issue with Davis has always been lack of shots and lack of goals. But with 3 goals in his last 2 games he'll maybe be more positive with that next season. His underlying BPS metrics are excellent so if he scores he'll usually get big BPs .

As a result of which he's one I'm thinking about for the start of next season. Could be a good enabling 4th mid at around 5.5m.

2012/13 was my first season playing FPL, and that coincided with Soton's promotion. I remember I had him as my fifth mid all season, only 2 goals and 6 assists - but he was my Boyd for that season, no wonder I have quite a soft spot for him.

      Dembele.
If he had been fit all season tottenham would have been champions. Spurs lost only once when he played 60+ minutes (opening day against united),
      With dembele playing 60+ tottenham have record 14w 10d 1l (2.08 ppg), without him 5w 3d 5l (1.38 ppg)
Fantastic player, not prolific scorer or assister but his workrate and creativity are immense for the team.

Who thinks Alli and Rooney will play?

My point being it will surely be Alli deep if that's the case meaning less output likely or he plays num 10 and comes off for Rooney last 30/20.

In both scenarios Alli becomes a less good option surely? A shame... or am i wildly wrong?

      I think you're dead right.

      Dier
      Wilshere - Alli
      Rooney
      Vardy/Studge - Kane

With Alli probably the first to be sacrificed from the midfield if a change is needed.

I disagree, Roooney does not have the legs to play in midfield. If England want to reach the semis/finals , they need to play a fit and energetic midfield imo

He's only 30! He might not be as fast as he once was but he has looked looked full of beans in his last few matches. Are you trying to tell me that Pirlo was not good enough play 4 years ago? He was 33 then and much slower than Rooney. Rooney is fine in that position.

But Pirlo has played in midfield for his entire life. Rooney , even when he plays in midfield likes to move forward and leaves a lot of space behind. Pirlo has always played at the base of midfield and has better positional sense of playing as a midfielder. Rooney should play as a striker/AM or not play at all imo.

Well we'll just have to disagree - I really like the way Rooney is maturing into a deep, long pass spraying player like Pirlo. He has a bit of Scholes in him now. Basically our difference of opinion stems from Alli's possible role - I really think Woy would be bonkers to leave him on the bench and his best position is where he plays for Spurs.
Btw, I'm not a Rooney addict, I just think he'd be wasted up front (where we have good alternatives) and he's looked really good playing in midfield recently. He can still score from midfield, Whoever Woy picks, I just hope that we do ourselves justice.

Rooney plays a lot of fancy passes but really does not help in dominating the midfield battle imo

Alli should definitely play. You are misunderstanding me . If I were picking the England side , this would be my attack -

                  Dier
                  Drinkwater - Henderson
                  Alli
                  Kane Vardy

4-4-2 diamond. But if Woy HAS to play Rooney OR Henderson is unfit , Alli should be the one in midfield and Rooney in attack.

Hey Eden, you might want to revisit this. 🙂

The best midfield performance I have seen at Stamford Bridge in the last 2 seasons was Rooney. He's really very good in that position and will only improve as he plays it more.

As for Alli v Rooney, I'd take Rooney by miles. Experience matters in a tournament like this.

But Rooney didn't exactly play in midfield , he played as a #10. He cannot play in the double pivot or a midfield 3 where he has never played before. (except under LVG)

I am OK with Rooney playing but Alli HAS to play imo.

No, he played midfield Eden. At the time I was amazed to see him so deep. He has a fantastic range of passing and has always been a combative player anyway.

Koazckik and Juanfran, now that Carvajal is injured his position isn't under threat. Then I'd spend the remaining 0.5 on upgrading hector to boateng

Seeing a lot of teams with Hector. Is this the German full-back? Is he reasonably certain to have a consistent starting spot or are people taking a bit of a punt on him?

He is the only proper leftback Germany have, adept at playing both LB or LWB whatever the system demands. He is my first defender pick from the game, along side Juanfran.

Morning . Mixed weekend for South Yorkshire . Sheff Wed never showed up but Barnsley were deserving winners and can look forward to trips to the likes of Newcastle , Wednesday , Villa etc next season. Re Hull are there any players at all that people will be considering for FPL next season ? Apart from maybe a bit of bench fodder I really can't see anyone who would justify a place in any FPL squad.

question about Euro Fantasy 16 - when at first matchday I'll put formation 1-5-2-3, and at matchday 2 I would like to change one of my def from the field for one mid from the bench - it will be possible and formation will change automatically to 1-4-3-3 right?

Since it is a McDonald's, and the previous McDonalds' games had seamless bench transitions, I'd expect it that way. If it is like the WC though, it will be a nightmare once again.

Cheers for the replies on Hector above.

Similarly, I'm seeing Mangala being picked a lot - I would have thought that Sakho being cleared to play made that spot a nightmare to predict? Or am I behind on some other development in that respect?

      Yes, you are.

Laurent Blanc has already said he will not pick Sakho even if he is cleared, and Mathieu is out with an injury - all that's good news for Mangala. But then, L'Equipe says Rami might be ahead of Mangala in the pecking order - I'm looking forward to today's friendlies to get my doubts solved.

      Keepers and defence are fine.

I don't like Abrashi and Ozil personally. Abrashi cos he is not attacking enough and plays for Albania and Ozil because I feel Gotze and Reus are much better alternatives. But if short on budget , Ozil is a fine pick compared to others in his price range.

Like the forwards . Keep an eye on Shaqiri's form in the friendlies. 🙂

Surprisingly lacking in their usual tumultuous preparation though.. The majority of the scandals have been left out of the squad it seems! Still, makes it no easier to pick from them. So expensive.. Janko v Griezmann is my decision of the day.

Anyone else find it slightly annoying that you cannot arrange your players in the actual positions that they play on the pitch?

My team is looking like something out of the Marc Wilmots book on 'how to defend' with my centre backs as fullbacks, and my fullbacks at centre back.

What are the chances of this lindelof dude (sweden) playing? Or the cheap portugese guy (eliseu?) Excuse the spelling cant be arsed looking it up.

I think Lindelof is one of the more likely 4.0 starters, but I still don't want a Swedish defender..

Elisea should be fairly safe but not 100%.

CaptainCrunch(A Swede) is convinced that Lindelöf will play.

Swede here. Not completely convinced, since he hasn't been in the team for qualifiers. He does seem to be matched to start alongside granqvist in central defense though, with starts in our friendlies vs Turkey and Czech Rep. They also start together tonight when we play Slovenia.

His competition is E. Johansson (4.5) who have played a couple of the qualifiers and featured in both play-offs vs Denmark and Milosevic (4.0), who is an outsider but not entirely ruled out.

We face Wales on the 5th, that should clear things beyond any doubt, but I'd say Lindelof is likely.

Are there actually any good Spanish midfielders to pick? It seems all are very risky due to a lot of rotation.

    Thoughts and suggestions welcome. 🙂

    Patricio / Sommer

    Alba / Boateng / Mangala / Giaccherini / Vrsaljko

    Reus / Perisic / Alaba / Mak / R.Silva

    Muller / Giroud / Kane

0.5m ITB to upgrade Rafa Silva to Andre Gomes if needed.

Is Giaccherini likely to start? Any Italian fans online? Any other obvious faults in the team?

I would prefer Ramos // Hummels than Alba // Boateng...don't like rest of your defenders...

Rest looks good, although I would prefer Lewandowski over Kane..

Boateng topped the European Qualifiers in SoTs. I think he has a goal or 2 in him. Ramos has a big goal threat but is a card magnet. What changes would you make to Mangala/Giaccherini/Vrsaljko?

        I don't have the money for Lewa . 🙁

Hummels also has goal threat from Set Pieces...

I would remove Mangala and Giaccherini, probably get a Swiss and an Austrian defender...No Idea about Vrsaljko

            Croation defender - Vrsaljko

Croatia have an easier group than Austria. Also he ony costs 4.5m
No confidence in the French defence?

I already have Sommer and I don't want to double up.

Hi all, first post on here!

I don't think he starts for Italy and their midfield is quite changeable in any case.

Speaking of which, is anyone else suddenly concerned about the German defence, both in terms of who's nailed and clean sheets?

First Post and A First Post Fail, well done!

German Defence is solid with Hummels, Boateng, Neuer, I think only the full backs are at rotational risk.

Thanks. Will change Giacherrini to someones else then. 🙁

I am quite confident in Germany getting 2 CSs in the group stage. Hector , Hummels and Boateng look nailed.

Got one of my American mates to join our league and study some footie to see if it interested him. His team:

    Tatarasanu (Kozacik)
    Alderweireld Boateng Pepe Smalling (Williams)
De Bruyne Sigurdsson Hamsik Weiss (Sanches)
    Bale Muller(c) (Hermann)

Apart from the bench, that's not too bad for someone who didn't know any players apart from Bale, Ronaldo, and El Shaarawy. He's been doing his research haha

Yeah this guy had El Shaarawy in his team at first because he liked using him on FIFA, took me three weeks to talk him out of it, and now he's really studying and coming up with a solid team.
