Scout Notes – Internationals – Wednesday

England lose and Scotland draw, but it is the defeat that contains the positives as the season’s final batch of international matches gets underway.

Germany 1 England 0

What’s the difference between England and Germany? On the evidence of last night’s friendly in Dortmund, it was a 25-yard screamer from the retiring Lukas Podolski and not a lot else.

The veteran striker earned his 130th, and final, international cap and won the match with a superb goal out of nothing.

For England, employing a 3-4-3 formation to promising effect, it was scant reward for a performance of some merit – or punishment for failing to take their chances when on top in the first half.

From a Fantasy perspective, the 27.6%-owned Dele Alli brought his fine Spurs form to Germany, minus the goalscoring edge that has seen him find the net in his last three league matches.

The midfielder squandered the visitors’ best chance when put in on goal by Jamie Vardy, taking an age to consider his options and then blasting straight at German keeper Marc-Andre ter Stergen.

Adam Lallana also caught the eye. But without Alli’s end product – the Liverpool man has no goals and just one assist since Gameweek 19 – it was perhaps less surprising when his fine run from the halfway line ended with a shot coming back off the inside of the post.

Gareth Southgate marked his first match in permanent charge of England by handing a debut to Burnley’s Michael Keane as one of three centre-backs. Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse also took their senior bows as second-half substitutes, while Jesse Lingard also calmed concerns of a knock sustained in Sunday’s win at Middlesbrough by making an appearance from the bench.

Elsewhere, Fantasy Premier League’s most popular defender, Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker (35.3%), was a key performer at wing-back for the full 90 minutes – allaying any fears surrounding his hand injury sustained in Sunday’s victory over Southampton.

The one worry for his ownership base is that he will almost certainly repeat the feat in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier at home to Lithuania, leaving him less than fresh when Spurs return to league action at Burnley on April 1.

There should be no such issues over two of Manchester City’s three most-owned assets, John Stones (16.2%) and Raheem Sterling (13.1%). The former was given five minutes of pitch time at the end of the match, while the latter was an unused substitute.

Meanwhile, City’s German winger Leroy Sane, owned by 3.3% of FPL managers, played the entire match for the Germans and forced a fine save from Joe Hart.

England XI: Hart, Keane, Smalling (Stones 85), Cahill, Walker, Dier, Livermore (Ward-Prowse 83), Bertrand (Shaw 83), Lallana (Redmond 66), Alli (Lingard 71), Vardy (Rashford 70).
Subs not used: Heaton, Forster, Clyne, Shaw, Barkley, Ward-Prowse, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Defoe, Sterling.

Scotland 1 Canada 1

The parlous state of Scottish football at the moment was writ large in the friendly at Dundee.

Canada started the match with nearly as many Premier League performers as Scotland, and the hosts then spent much of the first half trailing to their opponents, who are ranked 117th in the world.

Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield was the Canadian’s EPL representative, while Scotland boos Gordon Strachan started with West Ham’s Robert Snodgrass and West Brom’s Darren Fletcher.

Hull defender Andy Robertson boosted the Scots’ Premier League contingent when he came on for the second half of a low-key encounter, Fantasy-wise, in which Snodgrass hit the post.

Arfield later limped off with an injury, which is unlikely to create any major Fantasy repercussions other than improving Robbie Brady’s opportunity for starts should he be sidelined. Arfield has been deployed on the left flank in recent matches for the Clarets, consigning Brady to the bench.

Elsewhere, the 9.5%-owned Snodgrass and Fletcher (9.7%) are expected to start Scotland’s second match of the international break, Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.

Scotland XI: McGregor, Anya, Berra, Mulgrew, Wallace (Robertson 45), Burke (Bannan 45), D Fletcher, Cairney, Naismith (Rhodes 62), Snodgrass, C Martin (Griffiths 62).
Subs not used: Gordon, Robertson, S Fletcher, R Martin, McGinn, Griffiths, Bannan, Rhodes, Cooper.

In the character of the hot topic of rule changing, I'd like to ask another question that was on people's minds at the weekend. Everyone has their own opinion, and it is what it is, but just for fun, here's a repost in the calm after the storm:

Should the bonus system be altered?

I think bonus points should reflect the individual performance of the player, regardless of the performance of the overall team, regardless of the result, and so regardless of whether their good play directly results in them scoring or assisting.

With that in mind, it also doesn't make sense to reward players for things they are already rewarded for in the main points scheme. Therefore a points system that is a much closer race of individual's little contributions to game would make BPS an exciting little competition in itself, allowing defensive midfielders a chance to be priced in the 7-8M zone (perhaps defs too) and still be worth it, whilst reducing the price ceiling for players like Kun of old.

Squashing the price distributing like that also makes for harder decisions about who to pick, and a more fun game! For example, some obvious BAP changes I'd suggest are (current points allocation in brackets):

    Points for playing = 0 ( 3-6)
    YC/RC = 0 (-6/-9)
    Saving a penalty = 0 (5)
    Missing a penalty = 0 (-6)
    Shot off target = 0 (-1)
    CS = 0 (12)
    OG = 0 (-6)
    Shot on target = 1 (0)
    Goal = 1 or 2 (12-24)
    Assists = 0 (9)
    Missing a big chance = -1 or -2 (not -3)

This doesn't reward defenders for the performance of the other defenders (or the whole team). It doesn't give scorers points because they happened to score, but rather for their overall contribution to the likelihood of their team scoring (through higher emphasis on key passes, and shots on target). It doesn't punish them for taking a YC for the team (which is already punished), and I could go on justifying it....

Is this the kind of thing people would like? I want to be able to consider more things, not just goals, assists and a team's chances of clean sheets, without making the general scoring system too complicated for newcomers. Also opening up consideration to a large proportion of the player base that nobody picks at the moment. I think this is an easy fix.

I completely agree though. It would make it more sensible to pick players not playing at the very tip of the midfield diamond (for example), when deeper-lying mids might get points for their all-round contribution. Nice write-up.

Cheers. Seems obvious to me, but people just argue that it is what it is, like we shouldnt have an opinion. Like Jose shouldnt have an opinion on the rules of football

What it might do is open up the pool of players who actually get picked. Nobody is going to go for Kanté or even Wanyama and they are magnificent players. If they were to get points for playing well this would be helpful, as if you give maximum bonus points automaticlaly to the man who scores a brace, or even one goal in a 1-0, you are just double-rewarding.

I've always wanted MoM (man in the stand) bonus as well as some sort of pts based award as we currently have.

I love the controversy of the man in the stand award. It also gives the likes of Kante a fighting chance.

I'm not a fan of the small value allocations as this would be a step back to the days where 8 or so players received bonus points in games where very little happened. But I have always been an advocate of not rewarding bonus for things that the players have already been given points for. So for me, things like a goal should just be rewarded as a shot on target (the same as a shot on target that didn't go in) and an assist being worth the same as any other key pass. The clearances, blocks, interceptions, successful dribbles etc. I like. So for me, no radical change needed except for losing the rewards that players are already scoring points for.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I agree. That's the majority of my suggested changes. The other point being that players should be rewarded for their individual performances not the team, so the scoreline doesn't affect bonus. But that kind of comes under the umbrella of not rewarding or punishing for things that are already rewarded or punished in the main points system

As a fan, personal first choice XI:

      VV
      Fabio - Gibson - Chambers - Friend
De Roon - Clayton - Downing
      Traore - Negredo - Ramirez

    Scotland 1 Canada 1

The parlous state of Scottish football at the moment was writ large in the friendly at Dundee.

Since when did Easter Road, the home of Hibernian FC move to Dundee ?

Think FFS should have paid more attention in Geography lessons.

My mate came up with a new chip idea to replace AOA . Dream Team . So for one gw per season you get to choose any players you like no cost restrictions then your team returns to normal the following week . Sounds cool

Imagine playing that chip in a DGW

Maybe must be used by Christmas to avoid everyone playing it in 37

Only if there are 3 DGW's, otherwise it adds strategy, which chip to play in the DGW TC, BB or new one.

Not the worst I have heard - I think if the player you bring in has to be equal or lower value of the player you are replacing for that one GW, it may be a bit fairer (could call it the "emergency loan" chip).

I thought up a chip to replace AOA the other day too, called bench swap.

Its very simple, you can substitute any player including your GW captain with a player off your bench before the BAPS are finalised in the last game of the gameweek.

I have gone through some teams' line ups on transfermarkt from last season and also checking their twitter accounts to see pre-season line ups. A lot of players have left and came in so very hard to know exactly,

Aye. I've gone through all the friendlies played the last month.
I usually follow tippeligan as it's one of my bread and butter leagues when it comes to bets but it's hard to know things these first couple of gw's as Norway always looses so many players every season.

    Heaton, Jaku
    Alonso, Baines, Brunt, Robertson, Friend
    Sanchez, Firmino, Siggy, Barkley, Carroll
    Lukaku, Costa, Llorente

    1.2itb, 1FT

Over a period of two GWs, i am thinking of one of these:
    a) Barkley>Alli, Baines>Valencia, Brunt>Yoshida, Friend>Fernandez
If I get Eriksen instead of Alli, then i dont need to transfer Friend

    b) Barkley>Alli, Costa>Vardy, Baines>Valencia, Brunt>Davies(or other good def)

    c) Firmino>Alli, Baines>Vertonghen(Can be changed to Valencia when he has a DGW)

Which one is a better option? Is there any other option?

    Eriksen Mane Coutinho Sigurdsson King

A lot in the bank, 1ft.

    GW31-Llorente->Ibra, maybe Amat to Middlesboro-def
GW32-Save (if no injuries of course)
GW33-King to Zaha, Diomande to Negredo

    Hi all,

Thinking of the follow two transfers to start to prep for double gameweek but also free up funds for spurs midfielder next week:

    GW 30: Heaton & Jones > Valdes & Valencia

    GW31: King & Llorente > Eriksen & Negredo

what do you think? Current team is:

    Pcikford / Heaton

    Alonso / Jones / PVA / Evans / Holgate

    Sanchez / Mane / Pedro / King / T Carroll

    Aguero / Lukaku / Llorente

    3.4ITB

    Cheers

yeah thats the thing both this week and next week would require a hit. Just trying to find a way to get in a spurs player and also Ibra when for his double.

Reluctant to lose aguero given his fixtures following the double.
