Already On Their Holidays

After my look at relegation candidates last week I have now turned my attention to the performance of mid-table teams in the closing stages of a season.

The view in the football community is that these teams enter holiday mode early on with no threat of relegation or dream of European competition to spur them on.

Here I look back at the last two seasons, with a close eye on their final seven Gameweeks, to see if this is the case.

Teams

2014/2015 Stoke (9th), Chelsea (10th), Everton (11th) and Swansea (12th)

2015/2016 Crystal Palace (10th), Everton (11th), West Ham(12th) and West Brom (13th)

2015/2016

Average goals per gameAverage conceded per gameAverage clean sheets per game
GW 32-38GW 1-38GW 32-38GW 1-38GW 32-38GW 1-38
Stoke1.001.082.571.450.000.26
Chelsea1.431.551.711.390.000.24
Everton1.001.551.711.450.290.26
Swansea1.571.111.711.370.140.24

Summary

The statistics comprehensively prove the theory that these teams’ performance start to slide towards the end of the season.

The key finding is the lack of clean sheets, with Stoke and Chelsea having no shut outs n the remaining seven games, while Swansea only kept one.

The other interesting fact is that the Potters conceded 2.57 goals per game in the last seven games, equivalent of 97.66 goals conceded over a season, which would have resulted in relegation and one of the lowest ever total conceded goal’s in a season. The goal output also dramatically decreased for three out of four teams, with Everton dropping from a potential 59 goals to 38 goals scored over a season.

2014/2015

Average goals per gameAverage conceded per gameAverage clean sheets per game
GW 32-38GW 1-38GW 32-38GW 1-38GW 32-38GW 1-38
Crystal Palace1.291.241.291.340.140.18
Everton1.291.261.141.320.290.26
West Ham0.431.161.141.240.290.24
West Brom1.431.001.141.340.570.42

Summary

The 2014/2015 season did produce a mixed sample of data. The clean sheet and average goals conceded are very similar but teams did perform better in the remaining seven games. The statistics do suggest that West Ham’s attack may have booked their holiday early, scoring a mere three times towards the end of the season and seeing a reduction of 63% in their goal output.

Conclusion

I think two different season produced two different data results but I do believe with a larger sample of seasons we would see a dramatic reduction in form from mid table sides. The attacking slots will always be consumed by assets from the top table teams but defensively choosing budget defenders from relegation threatened Swansea, Hull and Bournemouth over mid table Southampton, Stoke and Watford could provide crucial FPL points.

Recommended Teams to avoid based on this article: West Brom, Southampton, Watford, Stoke, Leicester and West Ham

Thanks for this. WBA are certainly already on their holidays.

Key is Southampton - a vital team for GWK 36 and 37...but could they let us down as they start dreaming of beaches.

Not really getting the Saints love in. Every week Tadic is predicted a double digit haul and nothing happens!

Good point on Tadic. I think it's because he is capable of a haul, but they are too few and far between for me. Was planning on Gab for 36 but no idea now based on this. There is also the factor of new players in the league playing great for the first few games before tapering off (di Maria says hi).

I think Southampton will absolutely let us down, especially in GW36. Just look at those fixtures! Another factor to consider as well as motivation and fixture difficulty is rotation. Southampton are famous for their academy and development of youth prospects, what better time to blood them than in meaningless fixtures?

Fortunately their players are fairly cheap, so Stephens is surely worth the risk, especially as an enabler in a bench boosted gw37 where he faces boro. The only other prospect I may consider would be Gabbiadini, as he seems able to score against any defence and at 6.5 offers great value. However Charlie Austin may be back by then and Puel may want to ease him back in before the season is out.

There are also other great strikers with 2 fixtures in 37, such as Kane, Ibra, Costa, Aguero/Jesus, and a single GW striker with a lovely home fixture and a golden boot to fight for....who do we leave out?

        Puel dislikes Austin.

Sorry, it's subjective. I owned him st the start of the season and Puel sometimes benched him or took him off even when he was fully fit. I have a strong feeling that he doesn't like the British lad culture type of player like Austin but he has to play him or he will get questioned. Now he has Gab though, I'm not convinced he will.

Ah ok. Hadn't noticed that - interesting food for thought! I'd be delighted if Gabbiadini is nailed on for the DGW's 🙂

Puel started the season with Redmond and Long up top. Austin established himself as their main EPL striker by banging them in in Europe league while Long wasn't scoring at all.
Not surprising he finishes so few matches either, he's usually dead on his feet by the 75th minute

Thanks for this, very interesting, will certainly try to avoid players in these teams and perhaps focus on attackers meeting them.

Would be great if the next article were on the performance of relegated teams, which could be the case for boro and sunderland when many of us wildcard in 36 😉

That would be good...I have it in my head that once relegated they actually do better - weight off their shoulders and all that.

But would be good to see if that is the case.

Great article was certainly avoiding WBA, Stoke, Leicester, Watford & West Ham.

Soton is the tricky one with 2 DGWS!

Agreed Southampton are the major concern as i think most will look to maybe get two due to two dgw maybe Forster is the best option with higher potential save points and easier to bench in 38

Great article, thanks. You might want to switch the seasons round at the start though: you have:

    2014/2015 Stoke (9th), Chelsea (10th), Everton (11th) and Swansea (12th)

    2015/2016 Crystal Palace (10th), Everton (11th), West Ham(12th) and West Brom (13th)

Where it should be the other way around (Chelsea were on the beach this time last year, not two years ago).

Years corrected in '2015-16' and '2014-15', but still the wrong way round under 'Teams'.

Also, it says "97.66 goals conceded ... one of the lowest ever" - should surely be "highest".

Too small a sample to prove much, I think.
Some of the teams actually improved over the last few matches, especially West Brom in 2014-15 and Swansea's attack in 2015-16.

These teams all finished the season in mid-table positions, but were they all in mid-table positions after 31 game-weeks?
Might some of them have risen to these positions with a late run to escape the threat of relegation, and might others have dropped from mid-table positions after 31 game-weeks to finish lower down?
