The Numbers Game – Manchester United

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not sure on Ramsey. Looks good for Wales because they often have less on the ball and his job is to run around a lot. Not the same for Arsenal. He is also living off one good season when he went on a hot streak. Has shown nothing for many years since.

He seems to be popular with those that can't even come close to affording Sanchez and don't have the balls to drop one of Kane or Lukaku for Lacazette.. they convince themselves he is cover as he had a good season and scored quite a few goals a few seasons ago and is cheap and disregard he scored once last season.. will last a max of two game weeks before they are forced to pick another of the seriously flaky options in that price range

Lot of money gone on your defence. Trip walker and bellerin too heavy back there. I'm personally not gone on ramsay although there is a lot of love for him on here. Rashford prob pushed out wide in favour of lukaku too so I'd stay away from him, essentially will be playang as a wide midfielder.

I'd stay away. I do think he'll have a decent season but I'm never a fan of OOPs where it goes against us managers. Also, subtract one point for each goal he scored last season, one point for each clean sheet he kept and around a dozen bonus points to work out his best case total this year. There are better options in the price range.

          I'm not sure I follow.

King is listed as a striker on FPL. Defoe being around means the position is filled and King will stay in midfield like last year (albeit attacking midfield). It means you are paying for a striker and using up one of your three slots but you're not getting a striker in return.

Why do you say he won't be out of position now that Defoe is around?!

Yeah sorry, I didn't realise he was classsd as a forward this season. I was imagining he was still a midfielder and therefore would actually be playing in midfield now that Defoe is there instead of covering for a striker up front. Now that he's classed as a forward I see why you were talking about deducting points from his score 🙂

You have to add bonus points, not subtract them. He'll lose less than 20 points being classified as a forward.

The ownership tactic is much touted on here, and if it's that relevant then arguably you can get away with a very cheap defense because the ownership amongst defenders is so widely spread.

Yes and no. Sure it goes both ways but the players with the highest ownership are the players with the highest potential to punish you. On balance, you come off worse more than you come off better, so unless you know something the majority don't, you're praying for luck.

        1. Ramboros
          • 12 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

I don't believe this. The ownership tactic only works because experienced managers will deviate from the highly owned players when the average player is clearly wrong.

That's the reason we aren't seeing a lot of De Gea, Luiz, Walker, Rangel, Kante or Rooney on here.

It's basically a presidential race. The candidates have been chosen before you let the stupid voters decide.

Lindelof hasn't had a great pre-season so far but he will be in the starting 11 and Utd are a shoe in for a load of clean sheets early on given their fixtures.
£5.5M is good value into the second best defense of last season.

Essentially what you will be doing is doing exactly the same as everyone else week in week out and captaining whoever is top of the captain poll regardless eliminating any independent thought or fun in the process and in ownership tactic's case not having a team link so you can claim to be doing absolutely anything at any given time without actually having to back it up

Mate, if you have Sanchez in your team you need to get with it. It's like having Bale the season before he left for Madrid

Well, it is essentially playing a mini-game within the FPL game. Using ownership to your advantage by following the "pack" but at the same time separating yourself from the pack

Kane will not stop scoring goals at Wembley, but for his price he needs to score more than the other strikers and think a few others can match him this season if you rotate well.

    OFF TOPIC: Dear Agony Aunt,

The housing agency I am using to rent in the Netherlands from September amended the English translation of a clause that had previously suggested I would be fined 150 euros every time the smoke alarm went off.

However, they also inserted a tiny clause in the amended contract without telling me, that says I agree to hire a cleaner to clean the common areas once per week. I signed without noticing the change and sent it back.

Now the agency are refusing to sign the contrat themselves unless I sign a new cleaning contract, which hands respnsibility for cleaning common areas over to them for 30 euros per moneth for each tenant. The will be 5 tenants, which makes 150 euros, and the cleaning contract says they will visit every 2 weeks, so that's nearly 75 euros for the cleaning company per visit. There is no living room, so it only a kitchen and 2 bathrooms (presumably). So I guess that's 75 euros an hour for the agency (I mean cleaning company).

The contract is 12 months so I've suddenly lost 360 euros that I don't have if I sign. But I already spent a whole year trying to find this place, so I'm more damned if I don't than if I do. It's much like buying Lukaku on FPL.

Yeah I've written about it on a facebook group. I previously asked if the company were scammers on the fb group because they hadn't replied to my emails for over a week, and didn't exist on Google street view. The guy rang me 10 minutes later asking what my problem was haha
