Technical Area – The Man City Midfield

Through the first two months of the season, no side has scored more frequently than Manchester City.

In their second season under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage, City have averaged more than three goals per match to open this campaign and already look to be mounting the strongest title challenge on show.

With Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus as options in attack, we are blessed with two obvious routes to investment. However, reading Pep Guardiola’s intentions with the pair remains a test, made all the more difficult by the news of Aguero’s return to light training following his rib injury.

Just as Gabriel Jesus seemed cemented in the central attacking role, suddenly Aguero’s return seems more imminent, casting further doubts on the likely minutes of the pair over forthcoming Gameweeks.

So, instead, our attentions are drawn to City’s midfield in an effort to achieve coverage of this potent attacking unit while we wait for the striker situation to resolve.

In this article, we’ll be running the rule over three mid-priced Manchester City midfield options – David Silva, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling – alongside the more expensive Kevin De Bruyne, in an effort to ascertain where best to seek value from this side over the coming Gameweeks.

Apologies for the long post but can we argue that going for a premium keeper is paying more dividends this season than going for 2 rotating 4.5s?? The big teams are keeping consistent clean sheets while save points/bonus for Gks 4.5 and under are not as outstanding as last year (cough** Tom Heaton **cough). Furthermore, there are only 3 sub 5.0 keepers in the top 10 keeper standings currently.

Here's a quick, shallow breakdown for the cheapies:
Lössl (4.6) - 1 cleansheet in the last 4, 1 save point. 11 pts total. swa, UTD, liv, WBA next four
Fabianski (4.5) - 1 cleansheet in the last 4, 5 save points, 3 bonus points. 19 pts total. HUD, LEI, ars, BHA next four
Elliot (4.1) - 1 cleansheet in the last 4, 2 save points, 1 bonus point.15 pts total. sou, PAL, bur, BOU next four
Foster (4.5) - 1 cleansheet in the last 4, 2 save points. 10 pts total. lei, sou, MCI, hud next four
Ryan (4.5) - 1 cleansheet in the last 4, 3 save points, 2 bonus points. 15 pts total. EVE, whu, SOU, swa next four
Gomes (4.5) - 1 cleansheet in the last 4, 1 save point, 1 bonus point. 10 pts total. ARS, che, STO, EVE next four

    and now the heavy hitters:
de Gea (5.6) - 3 cleansheets in the last 4, 3 save points, 1 bonus point. 23 pts total. liv, hud, TOT, che next four
Forster (5.0) - 1 cleansheet in the last 4, 3 save points, 2 bonus points, 1 pen save. 20 pts total. NEW, WBA, bha, BUR next four
Cech (5.5) - 4 cleansheets in the last 4, 1 save point, 3 bonus points. 28 pts total. wat, eve, SWA, mci next four
Ederson (5.5) - 3 cleansheets in the last 4, 1 save point, 2 bonus points. 22 pts total. STO, BUR, wba, ARS next four (worth noting he was withdrawn at half time against Liverpool after having already made 3 saves)
Courtois - (5.5) - 2 cleansheets in the last 4, 1 save point, 0 bonus points. 17 pts total. pal, WAT, bou, UTD next four
Lloris - (5.5) - 3 cleansheets in the last 4, 0 save points, 0 bonus points. 19 pts total. BOU, LIV, utd, PAL next four

Fab and Elliot are the cheapies with kindish fixtures before the next international break while Ederson and Forster are the most likely heavyweights to profit within this same period fixturewise. Those on wildcards would then consider a Ederson-Elliot or Forster-Fab partnership, expensive as it may sound (it’s a whole mill dearer than my current foster-elliot pairing but that hasn’t served me superbly well to this point tbh). The main argument could be why not just pair fab and Elliot and get an Alonso or Walker from the top teams so the floor is open guys…. What do y’all think??

If you look at De Gea and Elliott for example - a difference of 8 points over 4 games for 1.5m extra - I'll stick with Elliott and upgrade elsewhere.
I can see the appeal though - and obviously it depends what you do with the cash.

GK is THE best position to go cheap on because of the save points boost. It's an individual position so a good keeper in a bad side has a chance to show that and rack up save points, penalty saves and bonus.

It's because of this that the good keepers in defensively tight teams (few shots on target), score only marginally higher than the best, cheaper goalkeepers.

Lord above, Doos! There's got to be a better way of linking your numbers... They look undecipherable on a narrow mobile device format!

While some of the big teams have had a nice run of fixtures and clean sheets at the start of the season, I'm not sure if fixtures are pertinent to the "cheap GK vs premium GK" debate, unless we introduce player rotation... and that can be applied to any cheap player in any position.

I wish there were. I can email you the spreadsheet, if you want.

Fixtures are, in fact, THE most pertinent thing in this debate, as it is all about what number of points 0.5 can buy you.

          Otherwise, everybody would have Courtois/Pope.

You play the fixtures to get the most from a cheap keeper, I agree. But the wider the comparison period the less impact fixtures have.

For instance, if you were to compare DdG and Elliott at season end, fixtures are totally redundant. But we don't do that because we know about fixture swings and rotation pairs.

Well I've finally pushed the button and gone for the WC. Now I just need to figure out the best way to use it...

Any comments on the below are appreciated:

    Elliott (Speroni)

    Monreal, Cedric, Otamendi, Davies, Luiz

Silva, Hazard, (Choupo Moting, RLC, Carrick)

    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

    - Carrck is bench fodder with a fairly strong first sub each week either through Choupo Moting or a defender)
    - Willing to risk RLC not playing as my second sub (and I'm sick of the sight of Carroll)
    - Never usually like to spend that much in defense, but it seems like I get more bang for buck that way
    - Hazard makes a nice possible cash-pot if I want to upgrade Vardy when one of the big hitters becomes enticing again.

    WC Draft:

    Jesus - Kane (C) - Vardy
Hazard - Sterling (VC) - Richalison
    Rudiger - Cedric - Ward - Cresswell

    Bench: Choupo-Moting - Mbemba - Loftus Cheek

    Team Value:100.5 / In The Bank: 0.2

I've both Ramsey and Firmino and planning to change them to Abraham / Hazard for -4.

Hazard could do 1g + 1a which is quite realistic against CPL. Ramsey after Wales WC exit might not be at his best and not scoring Firmino is out of form though Liverpool has been good against top teams. Abraham has good fixtures... Going to WC after GW 11.

      Haz and Vardy too.

How about Salah and Lukaku or Hazard and Jesus?

      Thinking for the next 3.

Seeing some free hits being used this week.

My word, some of the teams are STRONG.

I still have Morata and not afraid of a points hit.

Morata to Jesus a bit sideways for a -4, especially he had a long haul flight

It's not sideways if one is injured and the other isn't.

I expect big things from the Bournemouth lads this week as they don't have to play Real Madrid on Tuesday.

    Up the Cherries! 🙂

Torn between Silva and Sterling on WC. Currently have Silva and the Elliott/Krul keeper combo which is shaky at best. Could save 0.5 by going to Sterling and then getting Ryan in for perfect home rotation and a secure back up.

    Thoughts?
