The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 9

Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who are the priorities to leave my team?

    Hart / Elliot
    Davies / Cedric / Naughton / Mee / Long
    Salah / Sterling / Ritchie / Richarlison / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / Morata

Nothing urgent there. If Aguero is rested midweek then I'd do Lukaku -> Aguero. Otherwise I'd probably save.

Might be worth bringing the WC forward to now?

I wouldn't want to be playing Naughton/RLC/Carroll/Mbemba this week, so one of them needs to be upgraded. Perhaps an Arsenal/Liverpool/City defender and play 4-3-3.

I own Cedric & Yoshida and, whilst they are all good short term options, I'd say Cedric is probably the worst of the lot.

Bertrand - most attacking and on some set pieces
      VVD - BAP monster
Yoshida - Best value (goal threat and decent BAPs)
      Cedric - a bit meh

He is bound to get something from all those attempts itb. But Cedric could get assist if hitting better with his crosses. I gather 0.4 is not worth it, but then again i have both. Saved my week, when my two strikers got 3 points in total worth 21m...

Interesting regarding Vardy this season -

4 of his 5 goals have come against clubs that you would normally classify as being 'bigger' than Leicester , i.e Arsenal, Chelsea , Liverpool.

He has played 8 games this season, of which 4 were against the 'bigger' clubs (above 3 mentioned and ManUtd) amassing 4 goals, 1 missed penalty and 4 bonus points

Of Leicester City's next 5 games - they face 3 'bigger' clubs i.e EVE , MCI & TOT - all at home.

Think he's going to punish the sellers..

Everyone ditchig Jesus for Kun this week should understand that Kun could easily be benched too next week.
“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

Even if he doesnt play, there's still no guarantee who'll start as we seen it with Sterling with his mins managed midweek and Sane played 90' still Sterling was the one who made way.
Its all just a lottery with City atm.

    What is everyone's team value?

It seems like I've stalled at 101.0, which is far far lower than what I would usually hope to have at this stage.

101.7. Taken a lot of falls this season on the chin, and haven't been afraid to sell the risers. Different game to last season IMO.

tv is approx 102.1 but my tv sv is far lower, 100.9. Actually better than last year, but have been more aggressive with transfers atb, and that one bit me hard this week. Approx 20 points lost on what was conceiced to be decent moves, albeit the hits. I like to play with both points and value in mind, but sometimes balancing it out doesn´t work.

Which is more urgent, Alonso or Jones? Also only have Jesus as only City player, and have 2FT, so was considering Lukaku -> Aguero as well...

I would consider a midfielder with Jesus. I think jones can be held for now depending on bench depth as others are pointing out.

    With 2FTs:

Eriksen to Salah is pretty locked I think.

What about Vardy to Firmino with the other?

    Team:
    Pope (Elliot)
    Otta / Davies / Jones / Luiz / (Ward)
    Silva / Richmo / Eriksen
    Kane / Jesus / Vardy

Or should I address either Luiz or Davies?

I wouldn't move on Eriksen, he's imo as close to untouchable. Would rather just do Vardy Firm

Jones got injured last night. I wouldn't get him on a WC. Also, you've got no Liverpool cover, which is a must, because their fixtures are pretty good after current GW. 🙂
