Fixtures

Frisking The Fixtures – Gameweek 23 – The Weak

After assessing those sides with strong upcoming fixtures over the next four-to-six Gameweeks, our attentions turn to those with less cause for optimism.

As mentioned in yesterday’s article, there is now a split of home and away fixtures in the schedule – some teams face just two home matches over the next six and therefore play only four times in front of their own fans across the next 10 Gameweeks.

That is the case for all four team listed below, with high-profile assets from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United braced for a more testing period.

As we elaborated on in yesterday’s article, the upcoming domestic cup matches and the return of the Champions League – with the knockout stages getting underway between Gameweek 27-28 – further factors worth considering.

Tottenham Hotspur

(sot MUN liv ARS cry HUD)
The Prospects – Goals
Only Liverpool (13) have scored more goals than Spurs (12) over the last four Gameweeks, with last Saturday’s 4-0 win over Everton restoring faith in their leading attacking options.

Sunday’s trip to Southampton looks ideal to maintain that momentum, given that the Saints suffered a 5-2 defeat when the two sides last met back in Gameweek 20.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s men then enter a brutal three-match run between Gameweeks 25 and 27, taking on three of their top four rivals.

Manchester United and Liverpool are both among the four clubs conceding the fewest number of shots over the last four Gameweeks, although Arsenal’s defensive struggles mean that the north London derby in Gameweek 27 does not look intimidating.

The outlook then swings positively again, with a trip to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 28 followed by a home meeting with Huddersfield Town to conclude this six-match stretch.

Palace have tightened up defensively of late, though, keeping clean sheets in their last two home matches, including against Man City.

The Huddersfield clash a week later appears looks very promising – David Wagner’s men are currently struggling to regain their previous levels of resilience, having leaked seven goals in their last two outings.

The Prospects – Clean Sheets
It is at the back where the prospects really take a nosedive.

While a clean sheet looks a strong possibility this weekend – no team have created fewer big chances than Southampton (two) over the last four Gameweeks – it’s difficult to foresee a flow of defensive returns in the following three matches.

Gameweek 25 and 26 opponents Man United and Liverpool sit third and fifth for total shots over the last four Gameweeks, and will be tough to keep at bay.

Equally, while Arsenal are in a difficult period, they have scored 10 goals in their last five encounters.

By contrast, Palace are currently flying high, and, having scored twice in seven of their last nine at home, will provide another stiff test at Selhurst Park in Gameweek 28 – Hodgson’s men have now scored in seven of their last eight matches.

This run concludes with a plum home fixture against Huddersfield, who have failed to score in seven of their last nine away outings.

The Turning Point
Gameweek 28 marks the beginning of a favourable run-in for Spurs, who only face two major tests against Chelsea and Man City over the final 11 Gameweeks.

Verdict
Checking in with their overall batch of fixtures to follow, Spurs are afforded a four-day gap between next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Newport and their Gameweek 25 match with Man United.

However, that Red Devils match is one of four over a brutal 13-day run that also pits them against Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus – the first-leg of their Champions League head-to-head with the Italians is on Tuesday February 13. Rotation, to a certain extent, may well be a factor here, though there’s an argument that Pochettino can ill-afford to take chances with his line-ups.

Furthermore, a win over Newport will also see Spurs play in the FA Cup fifth round on the weekend of Saturday 17 February.

After Gameweek 24, the case to own a midfielder alongside Harry Kane weakens significantly based purely on the fixtures, though Son Heung-min boasts the form to make many owners reconsider over selling.

Those who brought in a Spurs defender for Double Gameweek 22 are also likely to make alternative plans once the Southampton clash has passed.

Manchester United

(bur tot HUD new CHE cry)
The Prospects – Goals
Saturday’s trip to Burnley represents a testing match-up given that the Clarets have only conceded eight goals at Turf Moor, although five of those have come in recent home defeats to Spurs and Liverpool.

United then travel to Wembley Stadium in Gameweek 25, with goals again set to be hard to come by against a robust Spurs backline.

The home meeting with Huddersfield provides some respite in Gameweek 26, while you also have to fancy them to get the better of Newcastle United in the match that follows, despite the fact that Rafa Benitez’s side have conceded just twice over the last four Gameweeks.

Chelsea’s visit to Old Trafford in Gameweek 28 again looks set to limit the potential of United’s attack – the Blues are on a run of five clean sheets in the last six Gameweeks. But this match could be rescheduled due to the Carabao Cup final taking place on the same weekend.

The final fixture has Jose Mourinho’s men head to Crystal Palace, which now looks far less straightforward given the Eagles’ recent resurgence.

The Prospects – Clean Sheets
Having kept three consecutive clean sheets, United carry good defensive form into a mixed period in their schedule.

Saturday’s opponents Burnley have failed to score in four of their last six, offering some hope at one of this season’s surprise packages.

But defensive points are unlikely against Spurs in Gameweek 25, before a very kind home fixture against Huddersfield: the Terriers continue to struggle for a cutting edge and have produced fewer shots inside the box than any other side over the last four Gameweeks.

Newcastle’s misfiring attack also makes the trip to St James’ Park in Gameweek 27 a reasonable match-up, while although Chelsea will provide a major test in Gameweek 28, they are also currently struggling for goals.

Palace provide the opposition in Gameweek 29 and, sat comfortably in the top half for big chances created over the last four, should provide a stern challenge.

The Turning Point
This is certainly a tricky period for United, with four of their next six on the road, while they play just four of their next 10 matches at home, with Chelsea and Liverpool two of the visitors to Old Trafford.

Indeed, there is no real sustained period of favourable fixtures from now until the end of the season for Mourinho’s men.

Verdict
Looking at their overall upcoming schedule, United will be fancied to progress past Yeovil Town in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday January 26.

They then have a five-day gap before facing Spurs in Gameweek 25, with Huddersfield and Newcastle their subsequent two league opponents.

Unlike Spurs, United have an extra week before playing the first leg of their Champions League knockout clash with Sevilla – that takes place on Wednesday 21 February.

Although that’s just four days before a Gameweek 28 visit from Chelsea, rotation looks highly unlikely against his current nemesis, Antonio Conte.

However, if the Blues beat Arsenal in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final next week, their trip to Old Trafford would need to be rescheduled and may well move out of the Gameweek, potentially afford United a blank.

In terms of targets, Jesse Lingard has been more effective away from home, with five of his seven goals coming on the road. That perhaps means that patience is required, while his price tag perhaps buys him time.

The seemingly imminent arrival of Alexis Sanchez could prove a major factor in how we assess their attacking contingent going forward – particularly his possible impact on Lingard’s minutes.

At the back, there is possibly more of a concern based on the fact that nine of United’s 13 clean sheets have come at home. Their away record will have to improve to see David De Gea and Phil Jones remain standout options.

Also be wary of…

Crystal Palace
There is a slight improvement in the short-term schedule, with fixtures against West Ham and Newcastle over the next three Gameweeks.

But the gruelling run is prolonged all the way through to Gameweek 31, with just four home matches in the next 10. Spurs, Man United and Liverpool are three of the visitors to Selhurst Park.

It is difficult to make a case for Palace options, then, with key asset Wilfried Zaha delivering just a single goal and three assists in the last 11 Gameweeks.

Roy Hodgson’s men are the only side in this article with no more than league matches left to play, having been knocked out of the FA Cup third round by Brighton.

Newcastle United
This is now a make or break period of the season for Rafa Benitez’ side, as they face only two of their next six at home, and those are against Man United and Burnley.

The Magpies arguably have the most punishing run-in of any team, and Fantasy managers seem unlikely to make even a passing glance at their options unless activity in the transfer window changes the landscape dramatically.

In terms of the FA Cup, the Magpies travel to Chelsea next weekend and there’d be no surprise if they joined Palace on the sidelines, allowing Benitez to focus fully on top-flight survival.

"Joel Ward has been back in training for ten days so he is available but Ruben Loftus-Cheek is facing another 2-3 weeks on the sidelines and then will be reassessed and that could be a negative assessment for him so that is a major concern." #CPFC

    Reposting in correct section:

I currently have no bench - Mbemba, RLC, Niasse.

And yet am planning on doing Ogbonna and Lingard to Chilwell and Arnie -4.

Whilst I am loathe to lose Otamendi, worth considering downgrading him to Stones (instead of the Chilwell move) in order to reinvest in my bench next week?

  23. Poker tips for fpl success
    zes
    • 8 Years
    6 years, 3 months ago

Thought I'd share a few tips I've picked up from playing poker down the years I think are applicable to FPL - not that I'm very good at either haha.

    1) The Gambler's Fallacy - I see this a lot when people think a particular player is 'due'. The point is that past odds don't affect future odds. So if Kane (for example) has gone 3 games without scoring despite being even money to score in those games, he's no more or less likely to score in the fourth game. The classic example is of somebody seeing a roulette wheel turn up black ten times in a row and thinking red must be due. It's still 50/50!

    2) Use EV (expected value) - People often ask whether it's worth getting X player in for Y player for one week for a hit, supposing Y is injured/banned and you'll get a 2 point autosub. Expected value is the average score X player can get that week. So you really want an EV of 7 for it to be worthwhile (to beat 2pts + the 4pt hit). So, for example, if player X's odds of scoring are evens, we can assume player X's EV is 4 (as a goal is worth 4 points, 4 divided by 2 = a 4 point total, maybe add 0.5 for expected bonus). I realise this example is 'in a vacuum', but I hope you get the idea.

    3) Give yourself easy decisions - Having a template isn't necessarily bad. If you don't have to make hard decisions and your opponents do, that's a win for you.

    4) Don't beat yourself up when things don't go your way (providing you made sensible choices) - Sometimes you make good decisions and things don't go your way. You might have brought in a player with good form and fixtures only to see them blank. Don't worry, you made a good decision with the information available at the time - inevitably (bad) luck will play a part at some point. In the long run though, if you make sensible choices for for the right reasons, you will benefit. I know it's hard when a rival gets 15 points from a completely outside-the-box pick while your carefully selected choice blanks, but you still made the right choice.

    5) Nowt to do with poker but coverage is a load of rubbish lol

Point 5 is an interesting one. Always tried to avoid this for attacking players, yet when it comes to defense you could apply this. Christensen won't get the points alonso scores, but a cleansheet is a clean sheet for all defenders.

Points are points wherever they come from. If you don't have Chelsea coverage, but you get a clean sheet from Jones, Ota or from your Brighton/Huddersfield rotation, it's all the same.

        1. Rover
          • 7 Years

Yes, but that’s not what coverage is about. It’s saying that’s team A will get me points and then wanting to ‘cover’ those points through the choice of player. In your example, you’re saying that’s United and City and the rotation pair will get points as well, so you’re not looking to cover Chelsea in the first place. Your choice between say Jones and DDG or Ederson and Stones and Otamendi would be a uestion of coverage.

As a Christensen owner I can testify to coverage not working in defence either. Last 5 GW's Alonso 42pts. Christensen 8pts.

      Nice, but ...

      1) In poker it is referring to statistical odds for cards appearing ... different to form and fixtures
Judging whether Kane will score or not or more akin to trying to evaluate if your opponent is bluffing

      2) EV in poker is based on return for a specific action ... for the duration of the hand
Transfers, especially hits, cannot be evaluate over a single match ... there are both longer term factors and also SV (which affects you ability to make other moves)

      3) Basically avoid long shots, avoid player who are only potential ... don't see the flop if you have 5 / 8 suited

      4) Good old variance ... I had a full squad for gw 21 and FH for gw 22 ... so many big players totally failed
There is no way my gw scores were the results of bad decisions, it was just variance 🙂

      4 is the best one.

Still not completely convinced by 1, although people will call me an idiot - if a player like Kane doesn't score for 3 games a manager/team may adjust in order to fix this, opposing teams might not pay him as much attention etc., perhaps increasing his chances of scoring.

I expect Kane to score at least every other game anyway, so he is 'due' when he doesn't - this is probably nonsense but it makes sense in my head.

'I expect Kane to score at least every other game anyway, so he is 'due' when he doesn't - this is probably nonsense but it makes sense in my head.'

If Kane is even money to score in each of 5 matches and he blanks in the first 4, he's still evens to score in match 5. I know it seems weird, but it's true. It's like if you flip a coin 4 times and it comes up heads each time, it's still 50/50 to come up heads on the 5th time.

I know what you're saying, but these aren't numbers. He's often odds on too - and the 'chance' changes based on who they are playing, tactics, setup, opposition instructions blah blah

I believe him not scoring in a game could actually increase his chances in the next game, even if that might not seem obvious - adjustments, attitude, motivation etc.

of course he's still evens to score in match 5 but you can't directly compare it to poker. in poker every round, there's a new shuffle and there you go, the same odds at each round overall again. however, kane brings his good form (it doesn't always mean goals or assists) into those "next" matches and when compared to other strikers, he's "more" likely to score. if you want to compare it to poker, think aces like kane and 7-2 like ayoze perez. of course ayoze can outscore in that gameweek (round for poker) but who's likely to get more points over 5 gw's. in fpl, you can choose your cards!!!

I really like your points and think they are something’s most of us managers conveniently overlook. But I’m going to focus on the 5th (you kind of asked for it there haha)

I think coverage is a concept that is grossly misrepresented in FPL context, and one reason is because sometimes it is intrinsically tied to value. It’s about say Christensen + 1.5m VS Alonso or Alli + 3.5m VS Kane. But other times it is not, e.g. Salah VS Mane early in the season, Sterling VS Sane VS Silva a few weeks ago, Hazard VS Morata.

But I think the crux in coverage in these two scenarios lies in the following example questions: What fraction of goals by Pool involves Salah/Mane? What fraction of Kane’s goals involves Eriksen/Alli? Subtle difference between the two but we need to break each example down to one of these scenarios and then accordingly look at the corresponding statistics. The principle being that “coverage” is valid only if there is a strong correlation between the points of the player you are covering and the player you are covering with.

TL,DR: two scenarios to coverage (covering a team VS covering a player) and I would think covariance analysis is required to test coverage and not just points returns. And we must not confuse value with coverage.

        Hey, nice post!
I play poker too and it has helped me to become a much better fpl player the last 2 years when I started playing poker seriously.
There is no coincidence that one of the best poker players in Norway, Felix Stephensen is also one of the best fantasyplayers from Norway. He got an impressive history.
There are many similarities in poker and fpl. Like all other games with logical thinking.

        1. Longterm thinking.
        2. Variance in the game. As long as you make the right desicion logical it does not matter what the result is.
        3. The stats involved in the game from different players are huge. This is something I never cared about before. In poker we can say that a person who dont care about it will bet on the flop with a offsuite hand with low equity, but the other person who cares about these stats are betting the same hand with a flushdraw with more equity. That means if the player does not score in upcomming fixture, he still got a higher probablity to score the next fixtures anyway.
        4. For instance if you play just to win your minileague, you can more play the "opponnent". You know that your friend is tight in poker, same with a "safe" fantasyplayer who dont take risks with captains etc.
        5. Team Value in the game is basically like a stacksize in poker, the more you got, the more playbility you have.
        6. At the end of the season in FPL you may need to take som risks you never had done in early of the season just to try to win your league or finish with a much higher rank. Thats like when blinds go up in pokertournements...

I wrote this in like 5 minutes so sorry for language or misspell.

      Very good post.

People's lack of a grasp of #1: the gambler's fallacy, genuinely upsets me (until I remember that the rest of us profit from it).

If anything, the fact that the striker you think is the bee's knees hasn't scored for six games the more likely it is he will blank, not score, next time, due to the possibility of him carrying an injury or other issues.

Its like saying if you lost 50/50 flip 3 times in a row, you are much more likely to win it the fourth time.

Only difference with players is that they are humans, and humans got feelings. I think the majority of players will just be lacking more confident by not scoring over many gmw's. Thats why we are picking formplayers.

Nice Post, which I heartily agree with. One further question for you if I may, in poker I can play large tournaments nice and defensively and play a long way. But when the blinds start escalating I quickly get knocked out...... And a top 1%*finish might sound great in a 10,000 player tournament.....but earnings per hour for the 6 hours it takes are negligible. I feel that's a good analogy for where many of us are now with the template team.....we carry on playing safe and my rank may improve from 11k, but not by much. Using your poker analogy, how do you recommend someone on my position pushes on?

      1) Gambler's fallacy has nothing to do with football..."in situations where what is being observed is truly random (i.e., independent trials of a random process)" --> Kane scoring or not scoring is far from being random... Kane scoring doesn't have a certain percentage which then is the same before every single match regardless of how many games he has went on not scoring... Kane is a human being, and might for example be more determined to score after a dry spell, so it is very much possible, even likely, that "the odds" of Kane scoring after a few blanks will be up...

I'll christen this now as a Fantasy Manager's fallacy = the mistaken belief that football has anything to do with probability calculus (i.e. tossing a coin)

Exactly right. Spinning a wheel is a complete random event, and each spin is unique, and the probability is fixed.. A football match and each football player have so many dynamic systems influencing each other, many controllable, that there's certain degrees of predictability, and the probability of a given event can only be estimated.

........and the probability of Morata's scoring a goal has diminisllshed over time.....

I think that the point is more not to think that that the probability is still 1in 2,

Sorry....lost my thread....but the probabilities change over time too.....so Aguero just isn't as explosive, yes he might explode from time to time, but unlike a static card, his effectiveness has changed......to that extent, the poker analogy may have altered a bit, but the point remains as to how to maximise return for a limited amount of funds and that comes down to maximising the expected return per pound invested......

If the roulette table was ever giving me odds of 50:50, I'd me a bit more inclined to play it. Black/Red is never 50/50 😉
I played poker semi-pro for periods over the years, in Sydney/Melbourne the year Honeyman won WSOP, 2005 I think! I also lived in Vegas in 2007. I started playing many years before that when players were terrible, it was an easy game! When it's popularity grew along with the growth of online poker the game became very tough. I havent played the game in 5 years now, miss it sometimes!
