World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Germany

Our World Cup coverage moves onto Group G now as we turn our attentions to Germany. Joachim Low’s side kick off their campaign with a very testing clash against Portugal on Monday June 16 at 5pm before facing a couple of opponents that will surely earn them significant Fantasy investment – a clash with Ghana five days later at 5pm precedes their final group game against USA on Thursday June 26 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

Germany coasted to qualification by topping a group that also included Sweden, Austria, Republic of Ireland, Kazakhstan and Faroe Islands. Winning nine and drawing one of their 10 fixtures, Low’s side caught the eye going forward and scored 36 times – netting at least three times on nine occasions – but failed to impress defensively. Ten goals conceded and a mere four clean sheets doesn’t instil much confidence, with Sweden, in particular, proving difficult opponents, scoring four and three times over their head-to-heads.

Most Appearances Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller (10), Philipp Lahm (9), Per Mertesacker, Sami Khedira (8), Jerome Boateng (7), Marco Reus, Miroslav Klose, Marcel Schmelzer, Toni Kroos (6)

Most Goals Mesut Ozil (8), Marco Reus (5), Mario Gotze, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller, Andre Schurrle (4)

Most Assists Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller (4), Philipp Lahm, Marco Reus (3)

The Key Targets

After impressing in the final third during qualifying, Lahm’s side have surprisingly struggled in recent friendlies. A 1-1 draw with Italy preceded back-to-back 1-0 wins over England and Chile before an experimental Germany XI registered a goalless home draw with Poland in the middle of last month. Sunday evening’s 2-2 draw against Cameroon once again underlined their defensive frailties ahead of the tournament.

Despite a move to central midfield for club Bayern Munich, Philipp Lahm will be fielded as a right-back in Low’s familiar 4-2-3-1 set-up. His raids down the flank and delivery from out wide provided a trio of assists during qualifying and will bring Lahm, who is available for 6.4 in FantasyiTeam, onto many radars. Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker and Bayern’s Jerome Boateng are Low’s preferred central defensive partnership – the Gunners defender scored twice during qualifying and also notched the winner against England and comes in at 5.9 in FantasyiTeam to Boateng’s 5.8. At left-back, Erik Durm looks set to get the nod after Borussia Dortmund team-mate Marcel Schmelzer was eliminated from the final 23-man squad on Monday – priced at just 5.4 in FantasyiTeam, he’s the most budget friendly of Lahm’s likely defensive starters.

In central midfield, both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira have been hampered by injuries over the last few months. The latter has only just recovered from months on the sidelines with a knee problem and, whilst he was preferred to Toni Kroos when fully fit, there are surely question marks over his match sharpness right now – Kroos was more productive over the qualifiers, serving up three goals and a pair of assists and, like Schweinsteiger, comes in at 6.4 in FantasyiTeam.

Further up the field, Low’s selection policy over the group stages suggests that only Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller are guaranteed starters in the four attacking slots. The Arsenal man is also first-choice spot-kick taker and played a part in 12 of his nation’s goals over the qualifiers, courtesy of eight strikes and four assists, whilst Muller mirrored Ozil’s creative endeavours from his role on the right in addition to scoring four times and is slightly more expensive in FantasyiTeam, at 7.5 to 7.4.

The Long Shots

With numerous options for the left wing and lone forward role, Low’s starting line-up is difficult to predict. It seems likely that Mario Gotze, Marco Reus and Andre Schurrle will compete for the role out wide, with Julian Draxler perhaps restricted to sub duties, though the aforementioned trio, along with Miroslav Klose, are all capable of being handed the central striking role, too.

Reus started more qualifiers than any of his rivals and subsequently comes in at 7.6 in FantasyiTeam, though Gotze – available for only 6.5 in FantasyiTeam – has been named in the first XI in four of the last five friendlies and seems to have the edge in the pecking order. Both players started against Cameroon last week, with Reus out wide and Gotze handed the chance to lead the line.

Schurrle, along with Klose, is classified as a forward in FantasyiTeam and is the cheaper of the pair at 8.0 to 8.4 – the Chelsea man started the last two qualifiers and notched four times, though has since featured in the XI in one of the last five friendlies, though climbed off the bench to notch against Cameroon last week.

Not sure really, they're definitely in with a good chance.

I think people are underrating the European sides in general, all this talk of struggling to deal with the climate is over-exaggerated imo, it's pretty hot in Southern Europe after all, and most of the knockouts take place in the big cities in the SE.

it seems to be based purely on the fact no european team has won in SA, thing is, last one was 86' almost 30 yrs ago, then just twice in the 70's & each time a european teams made the final so it's not like euro teams were that far off, holland played the best football in 78' till the final, germany came very close in 86' & brazil of 70' was arguably the best international team ever.

It's the Welsh FA's fault since LvG insisted to the Dutch FA that they must play when arranging the match.

And the Welsh players can't be insulted since they must know that they are mostly just lower league nobodies

Okay, fair enough....But what does LvG think he is going to achieve by revealing this?

Bale and Ramsey will get in their private jets and pop back from the Bahamas to play in a pointless match?

No, all he has done is antagonize the Welsh FA/Players.

If this is his "mind games" then he will be an awful PL manager.

it won't be mind games. This isn't unexpected LvG behaviour because he just says what he feels. But it is also kind of the Dutch culture to be direct and say what you think. I have seen countless examples in business situations where British people find this difficult to understand

I know LvG says what he thinks, but sometimes it's best to keep quiet if you aren't going to achieve anything...

I don't want it to happen, obviously, but if a pumped up Welsh player steams in on RvP and accidently breaks his ankle...who would you blame?

I would blame the Welsh player. These are professionals (more or less 😉 )
It is a difference of culture, here it is perfectly normal to just be direct with everything.

Since everyone else was too lazy to make a WC fixture-ticker for me I had to make one myself.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4Qqaj3dS4F_by1NZ0dFaEo1cW8/edit?usp=sharing

I expect much disagreement with my rankings which is why I made it configurable. On the second sheet is a lookup table of rankings (1-6, 1 being the easiest fixture). Changing a rank there will automatically update the colour of the fixtures on the main ticker sheet.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Can Germany win it?

Germany always perform well at international tournaments. Could this be their year to actually win it.

And which of their players will you own in the fantasy World Cup games. Muller as a midfielder looks great in FantasyiTeam for example.

Who are the recovered ball magnets among the Germans should McD not change their rules?

I'm going in for Muller in the Mirror game. He's capable of such quality and seemed to step up to the plate last time out.

Schweinsteiger was the RB man at the last WC (averaged 8.9 per game). But their group is a bit tough and from what I can see, easier fixtures at the last WC led to more RBs.

regarding recovered balls: Wouldn't defenders from weaker teams be attractive. They will be defending most of the time, granted they'll concede a few but will see plenty of the action to recover balls right?

They are certainly in the mix, along with Spain, and Italy as outside bets, from Europe.

In five World Cups in South America/Mexico, all have been won by South American teams though...

I can't really see past Brazil or Argentina, but with the three above in with a shout of an upset.

I currently own Mertesacker and Muller in Dream Team, both great value, and Neuer in ITeam. Might get Muller later, but not till after the Portugal game. Dream Team is obviously less flexible so he's in at the start!

I spent hours googling trying to find stats. All I could find was an article from FFS about Poland vs Russia or someone, and someone had pasted in the RB's..

the top scorers were CB's. I think they got 15 or something.

If you look at the CL RB's stats, I think generally the "top" RB'ers got about 5-10 on average...of course there were exceptions, such as the Ramos in the final, but that was 120 minutes...in a very closely fought game.

I think you want to pick CB's from a team that might keep a clean sheet, but will need to work for it.

A quick update on signings made by the German FFS Camp after a busy 24 hours.

Tony Warner Fan Club(vc) - (http://tinyurl.com/pf2cksc) - One of the finest gravs I've seen on FFS and an excellent poster with an impressive understanding of the workings of the McDonalds game and scoring system as can be seen through his recent hot topic.

Jake Donahue - (http://tinyurl.com/phoj53l) - A Fantasy Football expert, three top 3k finishes in 4 FPL seasons.

Notorious - (http://tinyurl.com/ps5dqvz) - 6 years experience of FPL, top 10k this year and top 100 in the CL game.

A formidable squad is being formed here. With just one space left in the squad, barring any unexpected events, no more signings will be made until deadline day. Applications will still be considered, however.

Kos doesn't have the same reputation in France than he has in England and his record for the national team isn't that great with the first game against Ukraine underlining this.

Imo, the only thing the captain has to do is recruit a group of player he think will score well. The formation thingy will be mostly luck no matter how much you think or plan

Mostly yes, but then there could be a scenario of putting a team with the player with Messi in your squad against the one with Messi in the opposing side just to cancel it out...

Murray should go through in 4 or 5 unless he lets the crowd get the better off him

Tougher to predict women's match, petkovic is decent but i'd go with Errani

Monfils is completely unpredictable. Capable of playing brilliant tennis especially at Roland Garros with the crowd behind him. Murray needs to make the difference early in order to win.
            Errani should win.

Yeah Nadal should be too good in the end. Good thing I left Berdych out.

Womens games are sometimes a bit of a lottery, and odds aren't great for tennis betting, not sure why I've been on it, lack of football probably!

Wawrinka let me down with a big accumulator in Round 1.

Wouldn't advise going big on it, as i think Nadal isn't the unbeatable force he's used to being on clay. Ferrer has it in him to take a set and should be highly motivated. Also won 3 of their last 4 meetings

          Chelsea linked with Juergen Damm

Chelsea are interested in signing winger Juergen Damm, Pachuca vice-president Andres Fassi has told Medio Tiempo.

Fassi claims Chelsea officials could travel to Mexico on Thursday to hold talks about bringing Damm, 21, to Stamford Bridge.

Damm, who holds Mexican/German dual nationality, has been linked with a move to the Premier League before, with the Daily Mail reporting in 2013 he had a trial at Manchester United.

"Yes, there is interest but we have to see how much they are interested," Fassi told Medio Tiempo.

"In principle we have a sporting plan for Juergen and we hope he stays, but if something comes up from abroad, we have to take it into account and if it's serious, we have to respond, we will have news in the next 48 hours."

He added: "Chelsea are the club interested, but we have to see how much they are interested, we can't go ahead of ourselves, we have to wait and see.

"When it comes to us, it's a matter of sporting project. We want him to stay and we will see how much Chelsea are interested.

"There is a belief they arrive in Mexico on Thursday to talk with us."

Chelsea have been very clever buying up all the best young talent and then selling as FFP comes into force. Balancing their books very well. Lukaku will now probably be sold for a profit now.

Did David Luiz move yet for that ridiculous £50m fee? I'd think UEFA should investigate that one
