Scout Scribbles – Ba Helps Magpies See Off Monaco

Newcastle put the talk of an Andy Carroll return to one side by chalking up their first win of the pre-season courtesy of a 1-0 win over AS Monaco. Jonny Evans looks unlikely to make the start of the season for United, though Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling seem certain to be ready, while Roberto Martinez’s faith in the talent up north sees Wigan acquire yet another prospect from the Scottish Premier League, as the Latics snap up 19-year-old Fraser Fyvie from Aberdeen:

Monaco 0 Newcastle 1
Alan Pardew’s side bounced back from their 1-0 friendly defeat by Chemnitzer last week to see off French outfit Monaco. The Newcastle boss is still without those players who participated in the recent Euro 2012 tournament but still rolled out a strong looking side in a 4-4-2 formation. Davide Santon started at right-back, with Ryan Taylor his second half replacement, while Jonas Gutierrez began the game at left-back.

Summer signings Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana were handed starts in midfield; the former was afforded his fair share of set-piece duties and almost helped his side take the lead within a minute, with Shola Ameobi hitting the woodwork following a corner from the new boy. Demba Ba partnered Ameobi up top and grabbed the game’s only goal just after the half-hour mark, highlighting his efficiency when played as part of a front pairing; Ba was ineffectual when shifted out to the flank in the latter part of last season following the purchase of Papiss Cisse but served a reminder of his potency in a more central position.

The Magpies boss made a trio of alterations at half time, allowing Santon to move to the left and Gutierrez to shift forward into a more natural midfield role. Ryan Taylor’s introduction saw him handed corner kick duties and he almost made an instant impact, teeing Ba up to nod just wide. Pardew’s side missed further chances to put the game beyond doubt, with Gabriel Obertan particularly culpable late on but the Magpies held on for a comfortable win.

Newcastle Starting XI: Harper; Santon (R Taylor 56), Simpson, Williamson (Perch 46), Gutierrez; Amalfitano (Obertan 63), Abeid (Vuckic 46), Bigirimana (Tiote 63), Sammy Ameobi (Tavernier 46); Shola Ameobi ( Gosling 63), Ba (Marveaux 79)

In Other News…

Jonny Evans could miss the start of the season for Man United, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed. The defender was a strong cut-price favourite last season following Nemanja Vidic’s cruciate ligament injury in December but he is still recovering from an ankle operation and may miss out on the opening day trip to Goodison Park, according to his manager. Ferguson had some good news on the injury front, though, and expects Vidic – along with Chris Smalling – to be raring to go for the start of the upcoming campaign:

Jonny has had an operation. I am not sure he will start the season but he won’t be far away. Chris Smalling has done a bit of training. The ruptured groin muscle he had certainly needed a lot of attention. He is gradually progressing and I expect him to start the season. Vidic will start the season, I am sure of that.

Roberto Martinez has made his first signing of the summer transfer window by snapping up Scottish youngster Fraser Fyvie. The Wigan boss already has a couple of first-team regulars from north of the border in the shape of James McCarthy and James McArthur and returned once again to sign the highly-rated youngster from Aberdeen. The afore-mentioned pair were integral in the Latics’ storming run of form at the end of the previous season and were fielded in the double-pivot in Martinez’s change to 3-4-2-1 and according to the manager, Fyvie could well provide strong competition for places in the upcoming campaign:

Technically he’s very gifted, enjoys playing in the midfield where he can cover large areas, he’s very powerful off the ball and in possession is someone who can read the tempo of the game very well.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Fulham is close to reaching an agreement to bring Lukaku on loan.
They are going quite heavy on strikers. Petric, Rodallega and now him. Seems like Dempsey is indeed leaving.

Well they have lost AJ and Pog so its not too much of a surprise really. Chelsea on the other hand would be left with just Torres and Sturridge.

Lets hope we go back in for Cavani or Falcao as we cant rely on those 2. In fact we should get both as Torres certainly isnt up to it and i have doubts about Sturridge. Lukaku looks like he needs a year on loan to me. As long as he gets game time

Falcoa is one of my favourite strikers, would love him in my FPL team. Would have to pay a lot of money for him mind having only been at Athletico for a season, see Cavani as a more realistic target.

If we hadnt wasted £50m on that useless Fernando girl then we would get him for that sum i reckon.

            Awesome player.

            Cavani aint half bad though.

Transfer rumours of FPL interest for me

    Cavani > Chelsea

Had planned like many to have Torres GW1 as he would be the main focal point of the attack, but with the arrival of Cavani it would put his starting place in jeopardy especially to start both games. Can't see RDM reverting to a 442 so would Hazard Terry + Ivanovic/Lampard be a better way to go?

    Berbatov > West Ham

With the Hammers having such a favourable run to start the season, Berba could be ideal for that 3rd striker spot if he comes in around 7 - 8m. Proven goalscorer and would certainly be nailed on.

I would only go with 2 Chelsea, probably Ivanovic and Hazard.

Berbatov is class and would be straight in my team if he played for any team outside the top 6.

In the big games last season RDM went with Drogba so I dont think he is all that keen on Torres and you can understand why.

          Hi tosey, long time.

Yes, he is a decent defender, very committed to his club and not too bad a footballer either. He was prone to the odd positional error at times and hasn't really got the pace to make amends for it. Also he was always a threat at set pieces.

Bit of both. Obviously not happy with the colour change - I was more pragmatic to begin with but as the season gets closer it's getting more uncomfortable. But the team is coming together on the pitch, so I'm looking forward to that. Big pressure on them though, you can't do all this rebranding and then finish 9th and hope to get away with it.

What do you think of Bristol C's chances? I see you've brought a few players in already.

It will launch admist chaos on Saturday August 18th at 11:15pm (due to essential maintainance) leaving 2.5 million 15 mins to choose their team for gw1. The servers will go down at 11:16pm and nobody will be able to login until 11:31pm when all they see is a message saying the game is "updating"

Would never happen though. If it hasn't opened by the end of July, FPL Towers will have been raided by FFSers and the programmers will be hung, drawn and quartered with their innards put on display in town centres around the country as a warning to others. In which case, there'll be no FPL in 2012/13 and that's when FFSers get REALLY angry...

FPL sent an email out on July 2-3 to people who wanted a date saying it would launch in around two weeks time (ie this week). As far as I'm aware that hasn't changed.

To be fair though, they prob don't know when the updates will be finished themselves. An estimate would be nice though, like something more helpful than "over the next two weeks". Its like asking a manager what exact date an injured player will return. They can only guess to an extent.

I find all the games offer slightly different challenges, and enjoy that.
I don't have the mad hatred of some games that others on here sometimes do.

The limited transfers with no option to buy more certainly makes you think differently and you have to take a longer view of the quality of your players.

So stupid from the keeper. If he just takes it with his hands he won't get sent off for it as he's, well, the keeper and just thought it was a back pass. Opponents would get an indirect free kick 1 yard out which is a pretty shit set piece.

FPL is what most of the conversation will be about on here next year. Sky Sports does look good to me though, having said that I don't and probably won't have an SS team.

FPL is based on a squad, Sky on just 11. FPL has one free transfer a week throughout season, plus a wildcard, Sky gives you 30 all season. Points are a little different. In simple terms, FPL is deeper and richer but more time-consuming (to be competitive), Sky is perhaps aimed at players not willing to put quite as much time and research effort in.

FPL is the king, but Sky is a very decent alternative, or game top play alongside.

Perhaps the most over-rated teen Brit of recent years... McEachran facing an uncertain future.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2174500/Josh-McEachran-talks-Chelsea-future.html

I've seen him play a couple of times (so limited data) but I really struggle to see what all the fuss is about. And he's very, very lightweight, looks like he needs to add a couple of stone of muscle to stand a chance in the Prem, yet he regularly features in these ludicrous England teams 'of the future.'

Can't see why, he couldn't even get a game under Brendan last season.

A bit early to say he's overrated, considering he's 19... similar sort of build to Wilshere so I don't see that being the issue.

I think the problem was he went into a settled Swansea side who were playing well and stayed injury free... who to drop?

If he gets himself out on loan and plays regularly, I'm confident he'll shine. He'd fit in well at a club like Wigan who try to play decent football I think - did wonders for Tom Cleverly.

I'l, reserve judgement on Cleverley, Heco, he's barely played since coming back to MU. I agree, young players should benefit from the loan system, especially now that they are able to stay in the Prem to do so.

Clearly, the term 'over-rated' is relative, which I believe he is given all the relevant factors, such as age, experience, opportunity. Wigan would be a good shout, Soton perhaps, he needs to get some games somewhere and it won't be at The Bridge.

It's normal nowadays, young players think the world revolves around them and that they are the best so they demand first team football way before they're ready.

Look at Xavi and Iniesta, David Silva, Modric all lightweight but great players.

        Size shouldnt come into it.

Mceachran was unlucky going to Swansea last season and Rodgers didnt want to change a winning team too often.

He is quality, I have watched him many times. Great on the ball, eye for a pass. He is potential right now.

To say he is overrated is a bit of a joke though. You even admit that you havent really seen him play.

But he is 'rated' by many who have, although Christ knows where (youth team?). And none of those above players are lightweight, you're confusing short. Moddy, Silva, Xavi etc all have very good upper body strength, which is why they bounce off challenges by much bigger players and still keep the ball.

If I compare him to Wilshire - came into the Gooner side too early due to injury to Fab, and stayed because he justified his game time. He is a genuinely high quality player with huge potential. What has Josh done to justify his hype?

I dont think you can compare Wilshere and Josh.

Wilshere played too much too young and is now suffering a long injury lay off on the back of that. Wilshere also has far less competition in midfield at his club. Especially since Nasri and Fab left.

I have seen Josh play for the first team live and many reserve games. Compare him to Cleverley (who is also slight) if you must. I am constantly hearing how Clev is Scholes replacement so if you want to talk about overhyping a player maybe Tom Cleverley is your man.

Big season this for Josh, I would imaging he willl go out on loan again, this time though lets hope he gets some gametime.

Fair dos, Funky. We'll see how he develops, either at The Bridge or elsewhere. I take your point about Cleverley, but as I originally wrote to Heco, since doing well at Wigan, he's hardly played, so who knows what he's developed into (almost certainly not Scholes MkII).

Anyway, good debate. 🙂 Beats 'when's FPL open,' miserablisms.

No, I like Fellaini a lot this season, I'll be very interested in his price, but may have to hold off initially given EVE's terrible Prem starts record. Ba's my other secret weapon, if Christmas Carroll doesn't blow his chances.

I had him last season towards the end when I noticed him playing a lot further fwd.

Good player, would do well at a bigger team I would imagine. Another belgian too. We are gonna have the entire belgian national team playing in England soon enough!

Yeah, I been saying for ages that Fellaini is MU's answer for CM. Very strong, dynamic, would fit in well I would have thought. Not sure how many MU fans would agree.

OK, instead of moaning about FPL not being open, please give your views on my Telegraph team...

    Reina
    Hangeland - Huth - S.Taylor (New)
    Dempsey - Barfa - Kagawa - Sigurdsson
    Rooney - RVP - Jelavic

I've got some spare cash so could swap Kagawa and/or Siggy to the likes of Hazard, Gerrard, Walcott, Valencia or Lampard.

I could also switch either Rooney or RVP straight to Aguero

    Thanks.

Would love to MJ, but I don't know the rules or scoring system. What I will say, contrary to many views on here, I am not convinced by Siggy as an FPL talent this season. Should be an excellent signing in real life, but I think his opportunities will be too limited to justify the price tag.
