Season Review

Team of the Season – Robin Van Persie

It was a transfer that not only shook the Premier League to its very core but had a massive effect on our best-laid Fantasy plans ahead of the 2012/13 campaign. Just one day before Arsenal kicked off their season at home to Sunderland, Robin Van Persie’s decision to “listen to the little boy inside” and sign up at Old Trafford saw many of our 15 man squads quickly reassembled before the Gameweek 1 deadline:

In what was Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season at the helm, the Dutchman’s acquisition proved a masterstroke as Van Persie helped United wrestled the title back off City with a handful of games to spare. Initially, fears were raised as to whether the former Gunners skipper and Wayne Rooney would negate one another’s Fantasy potential but aside from the occasional sparkling performance, Rooney was a bitter disappointment and, no longer the club’s focal point up front, ended the season looking for a way out of Old Trafford once again.

The Statistics

With 30 goals, 13 assists and 45 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points in his last year at Arsenal, Van Persie was slapped with a 13.0 starting price after racking up 269 points over his 38 appearances. Across the Fantasy games, he was the costliest forward on offer but in spite of his move to Manchester, “Robin Reliant” once again showed just why he tops the Fantasy Football Scout Captain Poll on an almost-weekly basis.

Handed his debut from the bench in the Gameweek 1 defeat at Everton, Van Persie then set the tone for what was to follow in United’s next match at home to Fulham, as he found the net and also delivered maximum bonus points as the hosts edged past a stubborn Cottagers 3-2. With Rooney out injured for Gameweek 3, Van Persie – despite a missed spot-kick – ran riot and Southampton, delivering a hat-trick and full bonus again and, with a 15 point haul at St Mary’s, Fantasy managers quickly realised just how key he would be to our campaigns.

Ferguson also appreciated Van Persie’s importance, with our fears of rest and rotation allayed. Van Persie featured in every one of United’s 38 matches, starting 35 and climbing off the bench on three occasions – in yet another staggeringly consistent season, he produced attacking returns in 29 of his 35 appearances in the first XI, with eight sets of double figures to his name.

With a share of set-pieces and corners in the bag, Van Persie also nudged ahead of Rooney for spot-kick duties and by the end of his debut campaign, had produced 26 goals, 15 assists and 49 bonus points, with a tally of 262 FPL points just seven shy of his previous season at the Emirates. Top scorer in the FPL game once again, Van Persie finished 50 points ahead of any other forward and found his way into almost 38% of all teams by the time the campaign came to a halt.

The Prospects

While the likes of Rooney and Sergio Aguero are surely set to fall in price after their poor previous campaigns, Van Persie is likely to rise in cost yet again – a ceiling of 14.0 is likely in FPL, though 13.5 looks in line with popular opinion.

For some, there will always be the temptation to cut corners and look for better value but ultimately, it’s impossible to look past the Dutchman once again – in terms of captaincy, Gareth Bale’s move to a central role has made the Tottenham midfielder a somewhat more explosive option but when it comes to week-in, week-out consistency, Van Persie is simply unparalleled as a Fantasy force.

Undoubtedly, Moyes is likely to need time to bed down his ideas, with a change in backroom staff already rolled out but as Van Persie showed last time out, a change of tactics and manager made little difference to his ability to produce.

Chelsea’s likely early double Gameweek, as a result of Super Cup Final duties against Bayern Munich in late August, has the potential to throw us a curveball to begin with. Many are already eyeing up Juan Mata and Eden Hazard as midfield options but with both almost certain to start off at 10.0 or more, finding space for both, in addition to accommodating Van Persie up top looks a tricky task. While some may feel they simply cannot afford to have the United forward in their line-ups to begin with, the nagging question at the back of our minds is can we afford not to have him nestling in our line-ups? Judging by his recent past history, we already know the answer to that one.

    If Everton had one of the best set of starting fixtures would you fit in Baines for 7.5m?

        We've seen that the likes Fletch, Lambert and Benteke can provide real attacking budget options that you would feel comfortable captaining.

        Same can't be said for defence. Yes, Demel had his moments but for a week in/week out defender who always delivers ate the end of the season, Baines is the one luxury you should pay for.

          slightly less prospect this season with most of the promoted strikers being crap.

          that said, i'm going for at least two strong defenders from the off this year and downgrading when budgets emerge rather than trying to call them from the off.

            Even so, I can see a few opting for the 3-5-2 so one less striker needs to be balanced with a defender who delivers.

      Baines may frustrate many on here but he will always be one of the top 3 points scoring defenders at the end of the season.

      Even if you abide by the "never bench and never captain" rule, he's worth it.

          There must be some uncertainty around how he will fit into whatever system the new manager decides to play. If Martinez comes in and starts playing 3 at the back, you might expect more attacking points, but at the risk of fewer clean sheets.

          Or if Moyes decides to buy him there will be question marks over his playing time at United.

      Some nice FPL here folks! Good to see 🙂

      How I start will all depend on fixtures of course, but I wouldn't rule him out.

      However, I'll most likely start with a Chelsea defender and a defender who plays for a defensively solid team with a good price and good fixtures (maybe Enrique, a Spurs defender or a relatively cheap, nailed on defender at United or City if we're lucky enough to get one). The other three will be cheap rotating players.

        Completely agree Tinkerman.

        We might get some value in Kompany this year. Goal threat disappeared for no reason last year and should be fully fit. Willing to pay up to 6.5 mil for him

          Kompany was cheap a couple of years ago too, but only because he was classified as a midfielder the previous term. I imagine he'll be £7m this year.

              I tried (not very hard) to find out. I seem to remember he was £7.5m.

              I would be very surprised with less than £7m considering City kept 19(?) clean sheets and he's nailed-on with some goal threat.

          I thought Spurs were better defensively last year for some reason.

          The pricing is difficult every year. Last year I managed to have Zab, Cole and Hangeland and DDG as my starting back 4 in GW1. This year I plan to spend less in defence. I'm sure we'll be able to make decent teams and good value prospects will emerge within 2-3 weeks

      Rodrigo scored 10/11 in 3 games v Denmark, Estonia and Georgia. A good man to get loads of goals when Spain are slaughtering their opposition. Russia, Holland and Germany are hardly soft touches. No doubt he's a quality goal scorer but at 12m in FF I'd be hoping for consistency against better teams. Not been prolific for Benfica either.

              Yeah he might not start but even if he does it's against Italy, a fixture where a good score is unlikely. If he starts v Italy then we know to bring him in for the Norway and Israel games with the wildcard.

    Bah, posted about RVP's price and was immediately called away 👿

    Thanks for replies everyone. I agree about being a Man Utd player possibly inflating his price over being an Arsenal player.

      The RVP comparison between last season and the season before is interesting - so he scores fewer goals at Man U, but in less time played and this is offset by accruing more assists and baps and he ends up with almost (but not quite) the same total points.

      I suppose this partly reflects the fact that United with RVP is less of a one-man team than Arsenal with RVP was, but I don't think it doesn't necessarily follows that being at United means he should be valued higher.

      Another 260-point season at a 13.5 starting price would put him on a points per pound of 19.3 which is a bit on the low side for an elite option, but really it's his consistency (and by extension his captainability) that you are paying a premium for.

          Thanks 🙂

          It's a funny thing, consistency. You know it when you see it in a player, but it's not an easy thing to quantify, and therefore to know how much of a premium it is worth paying for.

          One thing I would like to look at before the start of next season is to see if there is a useful way of measuring a player's consistency. I used to look at players' standard deviation scores, but I don't think this really works for a number of reasons.

            I was just thinking about Standard Deviation as a measure of consistency, not 5 minutes ago. Good to know that I shouldn't waste my time with it.

            I guess what we're talking about with consistency is a high ratio of scores you'd be happy captaining to scores you'd be disappointed with. Cuts out any skewing effects of hattrick outliers that, while nice for FPL, aren't really part of the definition of consistency.

            For the sake of argument, I'll say I'd settle for captaining 6 points, week-in, week-out.

            Ignoring missed weeks

            RVP's ratio is 23:15 = 1.5
            Suarez = 16:17 = 0.94
            Bale = 19:13 = 1.46
            Cazorla = 13:25 = 0.52

You'd think Joshua King would get some game time, but as I said I am not very up-to-scruff on the U21 side of things, or Norwegian football in general. clyne could be a risk..seeing as youre wc gw2 get a 3m keeper in for your russian gk(hard to think spain wont score) and upgrade clyne to dawson

    Mourinho on Rooney: "I believe he is going to stay. But if at the end of day Man United decides that he is to leave, give me a call."

    With Mourinho at the helm and a DGW i can see a few people doubling on Chelsea defence 🙂

      If he lets Luiz go, I don't see Chelsea having a great season defensively.

        I hope this doesn't happen but he isn't designed to be a defender. If he stays he should be in mf imo

    Norway 21's

    The coach will have to make do without Markus Henriksen, Joshua King, Håvard Nordtveit and Valon Berisha for the opener, with all on senior duty for next Friday's FIFA World Cup qualifier against Albania. The quartet will join the squad for the game against England, but since that match is the day after the Albania game, the four players are unlikely to start against Stuart Pearce's side.

      Really? Not much of a goalscorer and the Baps are heavily weighted towards goals.
