Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

Here are my punts from each team to open the season:

Arsenal -Wilshere - if he stays injury free he could have a lot of assists and a couple goals thrown in

Villa - Sylla - thought he was impressive last season and now that he is settled in who knows what could happen?

Cardiff - Bellamy - sure he is very well known and this doesn't need explaining.

Chelsea - couldn't call too many options

Palace - Gayle - new signing and he is up and coming real fast

Everton - Jelavic - Kone's presence might give him a little kick up the arse (hopefully)

Fulham - Riether - we all know of his talents but only selected by 3.2 %

Hull - Elmohamady - always liked him and he has a more cemented position (i believe) and he is a good attacking prospect

Liverpool - Aspas - if suarez is sold him and studge could be idea but with studge 2.0 more and with a huge 22% selection he could be a good differential

City - Fernandinho - it will be interesting to see if he gets a place in the starting XI o if he will be like Scott Sinclair, if he starts who knows what could happen?

United - Kagawa, disappointing last season so has a lot to prove and i think he will do it!

Newcastle - Gouffran - made a strong entrance in the french army brought in by pardew and should carry on well.

Norwich - Becchio (Redmond) - Either would be good but since Holt is gone the goal scoring duties fall on Becchio and his new counterpart. Becchio was a key player at Leeds and given the chance should prove to be one with the Canaries,

So'ton - Rodriguez - Goal getter, assist maker, low price option

Stoke -Brek Shea - another player yet to prove himself but is highly rated in America.

Sunderland - Altidore - a great player imo and will defo. be in my team this season!

Swansea - Hernandez - went through phases and am expecting the same this season, you know 2,1,0,12,0,2,4,10

Spurs - Holtby - young player and if he clicks in could be very impressive indeed!

West Brom - Anelka - Lots of competition up front now Lukaku has left but if Anelka cements his role then he could be back to his old goalscoring self...... maybe

West Ham - Vaz Te - if Carroll is injured then Vaz Te may have to step up into his rather large shoes...

    I hope you like it....

let me know what you think

Fernandinho is one of the worst valued players in the game. He's not attacking enough at all to justify his price.

Don't rate Gouffran either - bit POO.

Anelka's hit and miss in terms of goalscoring and now he's 34.

Also, you American by any chance 😉

    Lads, one possibly stupid question.

I currently own Boruc and Mannone. Does it make adequate sense to go for Boruc (4.5) and Davis (4.0), both Southampton keepers, so the chance of having no goalie playing is ruled out.

I could use the 0.5 to upgrade my squad elsewhere in one or two places possibly.
Collins > Coleman (or) Chester > Saylor/Amorebieta (or) Thomas > Koren.

Is it worth it? Or just stick to Boruc and Mannone.

I personally think it could be worthwhile, the 0.5 might not be reflected in the difference of points over the season.

However, I wouldn't consider any of the upgrades you're suggesting to be particularly good moves at this stage.

Agreed theyre not the best moves. Just some preliminary tinkering, but I'm just wondering whether it's a viable strategy or not.

I know that he probbably will. But if I could use the 0.5 elsewhere to make upgrades, then is it worth getting 2 Southampton goalies. So if Boruc doesn't play one GW, Davis comes in.

if you have one keeper whos always at home and one away, you'll always have a stroing chance of a clean sheet and you'll pick up way more points over the season. although i would go with foster over mannone:
          1 - he has a better rotation
2 - opinion in sunderland is that westwood deserves the first team spot

Spanish press, media and Chairmen are even more full of crap at this time of year than our own.

If Arsenal even under a huge offer sell any more of their top players without a Marquee replacement already signed they may as well throw in the towel now.

I agree. Looks to me like they're doing their best to continue rewarding goals and only goals. Other players will get points for tackles etc but it looks to me that the goalscorers will always outshine that and the tacklers will end up with no BPs.

Unless someone does some serious number crunching to simulate the BPs in some of last year's games using the OPTA stats, we'll have to see how it all pans out in the first few real games.

I think that might be misleading because those aren't the actual points those players get, they're an intermediate count of events. A defender could rack up an above average number of those points throughout the season through consistent performances and never accrue a single actual bonus point because the various goalscorers in each match hoovered them all up.

Until someone shows me a set of representative matches with actual bonus points awards (not just the tally of intermediate points), I remain unconvinced that this is anything different to last year.

does anybody think that if Mata joins united, Kagawa's chances may be a bit hampered again? He would have to play on the left side would he not?

Would you get Mata in your FPL team if he joined United, would you get Rooney at Chelsea instead or would you get both?

I think Mata would still be a little bit too much at £10.5m. He'd still need to settle in. As for Rooney, if he's fit then it could be worth a punt.

I would difinatly look at Rooney, only prob is RVP would look to be potentially worth 14mil. With Mata on board, he would certainly become more potent.

A fit and motivated Rooney under Mourinho where he would probably be the main striker with the ammo from their midfield would be fantasy gold. I just can't believe they have offered Mata as part of the deal

The offer by Chelsea is ridiculous. The money should be going the other way if anything. Mata is twice the player Rooney is. Moyes trying to be decisive in a new job is going to cost him dearly.

Way off the mark. 27 is very young. How many strikers of quality and PL proven are available for Chelsea to purchase? Rooney has 4 titles under his belt.

Twice the player? With all due respect. Nonsense.

You have a very short memory. His value to United over the years has been immense and he's won everything with us.
Imagine we sold Rooney to Chelsea and it took them to another level where they actually competed for the league. It's not even about whether Rooney is worth more than Mata in a transfer market. It's about how much value it adds to each club.

Posted a similar view earlier, and fully agree with you. Chelsea even without Mata have a strong midfield, Rooney up top gives them a real shot at the PL, plus Chelsea can get another mid in. The financal rewardsfor winning the PL would make such a transaction very profitable.

Chelsea are just testing the water, would already have known the offer would have been turned down. Interesting to note that the first Rooney heard of it was when SSNreleased it earlier. What it effectively does is offers Rooney a way out.

I must admit, I'm impressed by the changes to the BAPS system and the pricing.

Finally, those less fashionable mid-priced defenders may flourish, so straight away we have the 'uber' vs mid-priced vs 'luxury' debate. No doubt we'll all have a closer look at how the points are allocated over the season, but perhaps the likes of Carrick and Arteta will be rewarded too in their much maligned defensive midfield berths, vying for our attention in what appears to be a very competitively priced midfield.

There's a plethora of mid priced options to choose from and I'm glad that both RVP and Bale came in at their respective prices - there should be some real dilemmas regarding how we're going to set up our teams. No doubt some will go with both and still have a respectable team to boot, some may forgo one or even both and spread the wealth elsewhere. I genuinely feel this season is one where you could potentially omit either ultra-big hitter and still end up with an extremely competitive team.

As for the forwards, I'm surprised at Countinho's slightly overpiced 9.0 valuation, but Lambert and Benteke are priced extremely well. RVW and Bony's prices are perfect; it makes taking a punt (or bandwagoning) on them more of a risk, which again, should only add to the variation in teams. If Mata and Rooney do end up crossing paths as they pay at the M6 Toll Booth, we could be in for yet another twist.

Should be a great season ahead. Does anyone have the FFScout league code?

          No worries. 🙂

It makes the likes of Jagielka, Mert great options. Looking at the criteria it looks like Arteta will do really well for bonus in tight low scoring games.
