Pre-Season

Midweek Friendly Round-Up

The pre-season schedule starts to pick up pace now, with as many as nine Premier League sides taking part in friendlies over the past couple of evenings. We cast an eye over the action, with the likes of Gareth Bale, Olivier Giroud, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas, Dimitar Berbatov and Jay Rodriguez all amongst the goals:

Swindon 1 Tottenham 1
Andre Villas-Boas rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for Tottenham’s draw at Swindon on Tuesday evening. Gareth Bale got his account for the summer underway by bagging the visitors’ only goal – the Welshman was fielded on the right of the front three but was one of 10 changes made at the break, with a further substitution taking place on the hour mark as Villas-Boas utilised 22 players over the 90 minutes. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, the Spurs boss admitted he will maintain these tactical switches over the next few friendlies in order to build up squad fitness:

“We haven’t stopped training and that’s a good thing for our physical stamina during these games. We’ll continue to use 45-45 minutes to get everyone to a level that’s good for resistance, stamina and endurance. Football-wise, we had some good moments, but also some things that we need to work on. We had some good chances and the result could have been different, but overall we had good, positive moments to take from the game.”

Colchester 1 West Ham 2
Sam Allardyce’s side registered their fourth successive victory of the summer with a narrow win on Tuesday night. Joe Cole opened the scoring thanks to a somewhat fortuitous deflection before his corner was headed home by James Collins – the latter highlighting his potential for the season ahead, having been handed a 4.5 price tag by Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Allardyce made plenty of changes after the break and the alterations saw new keeper Adrian (who played the full 90 minutes) concede just before the final whistle.

Post-match, though, the West Ham manager’s comments on Andy Carroll’s heel injury were the main talking point. Given the Hammers strong opening six fixtures, the big centre-forward has been pencilled in by many after finishing last term so impressively but Allardyce was somewhat sceptical of Carroll’s chances of making it in time for the season opener at home to Cardiff:

“Andy is still recovering. He has got four weeks or more to go before he starts full training. His rehab is going pretty well at the moment.. but being fit and being ready to play are two different things…If we are going to put our lads through six weeks of preparation and then Andy gets fit with two days to go, you would not expect us to play him, would you?”

Motherwell 2 Newcastle 4
Alan Pardew rolled out a 4-2-3-1 with Moussa Sissoko in the double-pivot and Yoan Gouffran fielded as the lone striker as the Magpies grabbed victory at Fir Park. Both players found the net in a comfortable win, with the latter mirroring Harris Vuckic’s contribution by producing a goal and assist for the visitors, while Sylvain Marveaux was also on the scoresheet in a game that saw Pardew make eight changes over the second period. Papiss Cisse remains unavailable due to an ongoing dispute with the club and has been omitted from their tour of Portugal.

Pardew talked up the prospects of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for the season ahead, having handed the Frenchman the armband for the match. The January signing – who comes in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League – could be one to consider, judging by his manager’s comments:

“He’s a leader. That hasn’t really came out so far because of the language barrier, but you can see why he has been a captain at other clubs. I wanted to reflect that. I think he could be an important player for us.”

Vietnam 1 Arsenal 7
The Gunners racked up seven goals for the second successive friendly, with Olivier Giroud once again looking sharp up front. Having scored twice in their first friendly of the summer last weekend, the Frenchman went one better and notched a hat-trick – handing Fantasy managers food for thought if the Gunners fail in their bid for Gonzalo Higuain. Arsene Wenger made seven changes at the break and a further four during the second 45 – youngster Chuba Akpom bagged a brace to add to his weekend strike, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Miquel were also amongst the goals for the in-form north London outfit.

Singha All Stars 0 Chelsea 1
Jose Mourinho also made plenty of changes as Chelsea got their pre-season off to a winning start. Andre Schurrle and Eden Hazard were afforded 45 minutes each on the left flank, while Romelu Lukaku led the line (and scored the game’s only goals from the spot) before being replaced by Demba Ba at the break. With the Blues’ Spanish contingent, in addition to Brazil duo David Luiz and Oscar, handed time off due to their Confederations Cup duties, Lucas Piazon was tucked in behind Lukaku in “the hole” in the first 45 before a half-time alteration saw Kevin De Bruyne move to the middle, with Victor Moses handed the right flank role. Frank Lampard missed the match with an Achilles problem – Mourinho stressed this was no more than a precautionary measure and expects the midfielder to be back training in a couple of days’ time.

Prior to the match, Mourinho shared his thoughts on tactics for the season ahead. The Blues boss revealed his default formation will be a 4-2-3-1 before admitting he was a little spoiled for choice when it came to options to play in “the hole”.

“It (4-2-3-1) is my favourite system. Sometimes I change the triangle. Sometimes I play with one in front of the defenders and two players up and sometimes I play with double midfielders and No.10.This is a team where we have three or four players who like very much to be a No.10. Kevin de Bruyne likes it, Oscar likes it, Juan Mata likes it, Eden Hazard likes it. They can play in other positions but they like that No.10 position. It is a natural system for all these players to play.”

LD Alajuelense 1 Fulham 3
Fulham’s front two were amongst the goals again as Martin Jol’s side registered a second successive win on their Costa Rica tour. Bryan Ruiz supplied the assist for Steve Sidwell to nod home the Cottagers’ opener and also found the net late on against his old club, whilst Dimitar Berbatov took his tally to three goals in two games after slotting home a spot-kick following a foul on Alex Kacaniklic in the box. Kieran Richardson started at left-back, with Patjim Kasami and Ashkan Dejagah handed the wing roles as Jol rang the changes from the previous match.

UE Llagostera 1 Southampton 2
Jay Rodriguez was the main man for Southampton as Mauricio Pochettino’s side kicked off their pre-season schedule with a victory. The former Burnley man was at the double and also had a goal disallowed in the first-half, as he quickly make a case for inclusion in our Fantasy squads for the season ahead. Pochettino made 10 changes at the break, with Rodriguez the only player to stay on after half-time, though he was eventually replaced just before the 70-minute mark. Victor Wanyama made his Saints debut, though Emmanuel Mayuka and Jos Hooiveld missed out with knocks.

Accrington Stanley 1 Everton 4
Roberto Martinez earned his first win as Toffees boss with a comfortable stroll at the Store First Stadium. Martinez used 19 players over the 90 minutes, with Joel Robles playing the full match, while fellow new boy Antolin Alcaraz climbed off the bench at the break to make his debut. Kevin Mirallas provided a goal and assist for the Toffees, while Darron Gibson, Victor Anichebe and Leon Osman all found the net, with Seamus Coleman providing the assist for the latter’s header. The Toffees boss –who will monitor Steven Pienaar after he limped off with a knock towards the end – was pleased with his players’ displays as he looks to introduce a more possession-based attacking style of play:

“Every player has been working and that is a very positive thing. The composure of when to pass the ball and when to run forward was good. We had to defend at times. Accrington showed a real spirit and we wish them well for the season. The understanding between the players is clear. In the attacking third, they look really lively and we’re still in that period of working with a lot of volume so it’s pleasing to see such a bright performance.”

FC Chiasso 0 Sunderland 1
Emanuel Giaccherini made his debut as the Black Cats scraped a narrow win in yesterday’s practice match. The Italian was handed a role on the left, with Adam Johnson fielded on the opposite flank, while his compatriot Vito Mannone lasted the full 90 minutes between the sticks. Paolo Di Canio opted for a 4-4-1-1 with Stephane Sessegnon in “the hole” and utilised 19 players over the match – Connor Wickham climbed off the bench to replace Jozy Altidore and grabbed the only goal, volleying home from a Jack Colback cross.

I think this is relatively close but will be interesting to see what the reaction is.

    A) Walcott, Mirallas, Aguero

    B) Silva, Koren, RVP

Koren would be in the starting XI unfortunately but might be worth it for Robin!

    GK analysis

Hart - Too expensive if Nastasic is nailed on. Clichy and Zaba are 0.5m cheaper with upside. AVOID

Cech - Solid but Terry and Azpilicueta are 0.5 cheaper and others at the same price offer upside (Luiz and Ivanovic) Avoid unless DGW makes it handy to own.

Szczesney - I love the look of this guy at 5.5m. IF he is no.1 all season then 5.5m is a really nice price. Arsenal defenders all come in at the same price of 5.5m so there is no better value in going for a defender. For this reason, I consider Szczesney to be the best of the 'elite' keepers on offer right now. CONSIDER STRONGLY

Bego - Overpriced. If he leaves to another club, you might think again. Wilson @ 4.5m is too much of a bargain if he is nailed on. 1m cheaper. AVOID

Jussi - Overpriced once again because of previous season. Collins or Reid/Demel offer better value.

Mignolet/Reina - A no-goer until we know who is no.1. Toure is cheaper and other offer better upside. Once the no.1 is certain though 5.5m is a nice price. CONSIDER

Howard - Ok price for a dependable keeper. But Coleman, Distin and Alcaraz are all cheaper and Coleman offers a lot of upside with assist potential. Jags is also the same price. BETTER VALUE ELSEWHERE

De Gea - 6m was surprising, I was expecting a higher price. So bearing this in mind, he's good value if you want to squeeze him in. BUT Man Utd's first 5 are tough and 6m is too much to spend on a keeper with those fixtures. AVOID

Lloris - a little surprised he moved up to 6m from 5.5m. But a keeper like him playing for a top 6 side is going to be highly rated. However, Dawson and Assou Ekotto offer better value and Walker at the same price offers attacking upside. AVOID

Guzan - 5m for their main keeper seems fair I guess but Villa were defensively atrocious last season. Unless they can improve then 5m seems like a lot. Looking at their fixtures, there is not a lot to get excited about. AVOID

Stekelenberg - 5m for a quality keeper who will be no.1 seems fair. Problem is Fulham are weak defensively and haven't made any huge changes yet. If he can shore up the defence however 5m seems a reasonable price. Their fixtures are not overly difficult to start either. CONSIDER

Krul - 5m is a fair price but with an injury at the moment it's probably not too wise to plan to have him in your team just yet. Mbiwa and Taylor coming it 0.5m could offer better value. If he does recover in time for kick off then 5m is a nice price for someone who has a nice run of fixtures after City away on the opening day. CONSIDER

Ruddy - An excellent keeper, sought after by Chelsea. Dependable and playing in a defensively minded team (at least they were last season). He missed a lot of last season but was fantastic value at times at 4.5m. 5m seems a nice price but he's competing with others like Stek, Foster and Vorm so he's not a no brainer. Plus Norwich have cheaper defenders that offer better value. CONSIDER but with some hesitation

Vorm - @ 5m I'd be very keen on Vorm for the start of the season. The problem is his fixtures are dire. AVOID (for now)

Foster - West Brom weren't always very reliable defensively but they do have a strong backbone to their team and will inevitably make some signings. I like the look of Foster a lot @ 5m and his fixtures are not off putting. CONSIDER STRONGLY

Marshall - Very good value if he is nailed on @ 4.5m. Although there are cheaper options in defence @ 4m. Cardiff could be tough to beat at home and clubs will be unfamiliar with the experience. CONSIDER

Speroni - Holloway sides are renowned for their defensive play. But 4.5m is an ok price once again for a promoted sides keeper. Cheaper options exist in defence however. AVOID if you can

Boruc - If this guy is no.1 all season, 4.5m is going to look like a massive bargain. And with good opening fixtures it would seem like madness to ignore him completely. CONSIDER HIGHLY

McGregor - Hull probably have more defensive qualities to their style than Palace. So maybe this guy just pips Speroni and does battle with Marshall. The jury is still out on how these teams do in the PL however. CONSIDER but with trepidation

Sorensen - IF Begovic does move on...a big if. 4,5m for their backup keeper would be a very nice price.

Westwood/Mannone - Where the no.1 jersey goes has yet to be confirmed. And I don't believe this issue will be resolved until we see more pre-season action. Right now, my money is on Westwood as he will probably be given the chance to prove himself now that Mignolet has left. He's been waiting in the wings and won't want to be no.2 to Mannone. AVOID for now but CONSIDER when things are clear.

  4. Statistical reasoning for RVP and Bale. Can you ignore them?

Taking my discussion Re Bale + RVP vs. the rest here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/18/midweek-friendly-round-up/?hc_page=6#hc_comment_5058810 further, i decided to dig deep.

So what I have done is added up the FPL points of the forwards and the mids for 5 teams and then calculated the percentage of points they scored for their teams. This is to justify my point that RVP and Bale hog the points for their teams while there is a tendency for them to get divided in other cases. Of course injuries, etc play a part but this is what i got. (I didn't include Lukaku for Chelsea)

    Arsenal
    Santi – 17.75%
    Theo – 16.8%
    Poldi – 12.72%
    Arteta – 11.34%
    Giroud – 10.5%
    (5 players above 100)

    Man United
    RVP – 24%
    Rooney – 12.8%
    Carrick – 9%
    (Only 3 players above 100)

    Tottenham
    Bale – 21.7%
    Lennon – 11.3%
    Defoe – 10.78%
    Dempsey – 10.33%
    (4 players above 100)

    Chelsea
    Mata – 18.3%
    Hazard – 16.4%
    Ba – 13.2%
    Lampard – 12.95%
    Torres – 11.5%
    Oscar – 10.09%
    Ramires – 8.71%
    (6 players above 100)

    Manchester City
    Silva – 16.1%
    Yaya – 15.55%
    Dzeko – 14.23%
    Aguero – 13.25%
    (4 players above 100)

As you can see RVP and Bale hog the points by a distance which is why they are priced at such a premium. The second points scorer in their respective teams is at a considerabely lower percentage. All the other teams have a fairly close distribution of points amongst their attackers. These are some interesting figures to look at otherwise too.

      Here's Liverpool.

      Liverpool
      Suarez – 21.26%
      Gerrard – 18.55%
      Downing - 10%
      Studge – 10%

Little bit skewed due to Coutinho, Studge having an influence second half and Sterling having a little influence first half.

You have to also take into account their price, if you divide the points each player scored by their current price you would get a better representation and I imagine it would be a lot closer.

2 players worth 8m may score the same amount of points over the seasons as 1 x 13m and 1 x 5m player but they both cost the same.

Not taking price into account here. You have to pay the big bucks for premium players. Just wanted to illustrate why they are premium.

Fair enough but as I say don't think it actually shows much and can actually trick people into thinking they need to buy the expensive players.

I imagine FPL do a lot of analysis in the off season to make try and price the players relative to the points they score as to make it as competitive as possible.

Anomalies usually come in where new players join or youth comes through meaning they have little form to relate the price to and where players are played OOP.

This analysis is only concerned with captaincy picks. Without captaincy neither Bale or RVP is worth it due to price constraints, however, they are unrivalled when it comes to captaincy and Lateriser has shown wise.

But I agree a better explanation of the assumptions used should have been shown.

        Except that £16m < £18m.

But don't get lulled into the mistake of thinking that Value is everything or else you would always be buying the cheaper players - RVP does not score 3 times as many points as the best £4.5m players.

The trick is all about the marginal increase in points you get for the extra money spent so moving from Lambert to RVP in 2012/13 would have given you about 10 pts for each £1m spent on having RVP rather than Lambert. If you can get those extra points in other parts of the field then RVP ceases to be obligatory.

By the end of last season the call on buying or non-buying RVP was a marginal one.

      Then you get the follow on question that requires answering;

Have Man United/Tottenham done enough this summer to suggest that these two players wont be fpl hoovers again next year?

Addictionally, are any of teams trending towards being fpl one man teams?

Aye that could be a question that needs answering. Maybe i'll do this again after about 10 gws into the season.

Also, it is the sheer quality of these two, the people around them and their finishing ability for this percentage.

Well I'm not sure what you posted is proof in itself, but obviously I know how good he is FPL-wise.

What I'm saying is: will United be as reliant on RVP this season for points or will a change of system/tactics lead to other players chipping in.

The whole argument that RVP captain every week makes up for his price, but without RVP I still have Bale for that.

As has been mentioned above, we need to look at alternatives in attack to really say whether we can afford not to have him.

Nice post! This is putting my mind at ease about fitting bale and rvp in to my team. I think if chelsea and spurs had big reliable strikers last season such as lukaku and benteke instead of torres adebayor etc potentially then it would have made a big difference to mata hazard bale contributions. Same for rvp if man u had a better attacking midfield.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with "coverage" so this post is absolutely rubbish in my eyes. It doesn't matter what percentage of points a player gets from a team it's how many points he gets overall.

Rvp is not good value as you have to pay 9m more of your free budget (the cost above cheapest playing striker) to buy him. This would give you an 7.5m mid and a 10.5m mid over two 4.5m mids. I know which combo I would want 5.0m 7.5m 10.5m over rvp plus 2x 4.5m mids. The option without rvp scores more allowing for one of these to be bench fodder.

If Mirallas had of been classed as a Midfielder rather than a Forward last year he would have got an extra 14 points.

6 for the extra point Midfielders get for goals
    and
8 for the clean sheet points.

Taking him from 96 up to 110.

Classed as a forward with the 96 points this would average 4.73 points per game.
Classed as a midfield with the 110 points this would average 5.42 points per game.

This was a simple message...and it was something that I should have (and kinda already had) considered....but it made me realize that I don't really want Mirallas on his own merit. If he was a Forward I would never get him: even if we were allowed to have 5 forwards instead of 3!!!

Therefore I thank you, Reckoner, and I think I won't be getting him.

What's your view on Anelka's FPL potential?

If he is the lone striker, he could be brilliant. Priced at £5.5m, I remember in his scout report their were talks of him being around £6.5m so there could be good value. West Brom play SOU; eve; SWA; ful; SUN in their opening 5 fixtures, which is appealing! But they then play mnu; ARS; stk; liv, where their fixtures hit a bit of a 360.

He is 34 years old. He only scored 3 goals in 24 games for Shanghai Shenhua, and after moving to Juventus, he only played 3 matches.

Will he even be the lone striker? Perhaps that will be Shane Long, and Anelka will play on the right? I don't think Anelka is even an absolutely guaranteed starter either.

IMO, he should be viewed as a risky punt. He could be brilliant. But, you could also be forced into an early transfer, which is something I'm avoiding, especially if there is a Chelsea DGW, as I plan to use my early transfers to get rid of enough of my Chelsea/Villa players in time for their blank in GW 3.

What's your view on Helenius? Or Cornelius? Possibly Danny Graham if he's Hull's number 1 striker?

I think I may put all of the above ahead of Gayle, in my opinion. Haven't seen much of Gayle, but he scored 13 goals in 29 games in the Championship. So with the step up to the Premier League, do you think he'll score 10+ goals this season?

I agree. But in terms of FPL? Long is a bit pricy at £6.5m. If he is their lone striker and is guaranteed game time (unlike last season, where that was given to Lukaku), he could score 10+ goals this season and be a real FPL option.

Again, like Anelka, in terms of FPL, I'm gonna wait and see where Long fits in this season.

Please rate my team - i've made about 30 changes so far so welcome to all comments:

At the risk of criticising your differentials, I think Deulofeu falls well within the 'wait and see' category, and I'd be wary of Bellamy. Your defence is relatively expensive

Has anyone been following Brek Shea (Stoke Mid)

He was a hot prospect when he arrived but never really was given a chance. Scored for the U.S. recently.

Could he play for Stoke this season?

    Seems like a decent PUNT;)

    Hi guys,

Wondered what the consensus around here was on two players i'm considering.

    Coleman

    and

Cardiffs record signing Andreas Corenelius. Not convinced by Gayle, and not sure about Anelkas potential, so need a decent 5.5mil or under striker. Surely he'll start, and I hear the lad is decent?

Coleman is a decent option but a little over-hyped on here.

Cornelius has potential to be a good pick but I wouldn't start with him.

I support Cardiff and I believe that Malky has put faith in Kevin McNaughton

our back 4 should look like this (left to right)
        Taylor Connolly Hudson McNaughton

        (Hudson/Turner/Connolly only 2 will play)

Anyone fancy Lampard for start of season? 15 goals in less than 2,000 mins on the pitch last season and a Mourinho favourite.

Ideally id like Schurrle or Kagawa at the same price, but lamps is safest to start off with and then make a switch when one appears to nail down a role.
