Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out the eighth article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this morning. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders, we then looked at Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders. Up next, then, we turn our attentions to the men up front, focussing on players no more than 6.0:

Up to 5.5 Mark

Cardiff new boy Andreas Cornelius is likely to earn plenty game time in his debut season for the Bluebirds. “The Danish Tank” racked up 18 goals in 32 appearances for FC Copenhagen in 2012/13 but with just one full season of professional football behind him, there are concerns he may take time to adapt. Malky Mackay’s penchant for a target man within a lone striker system should ensure the 5.5 priced Cornelius plenty starts, while the likes of Fraizer Campbell (also 5.5) is more likely to earn game time off the bench when the Welsh club need to alter their approach and switch to two up front later on in games. Craig Bellamy is similarly priced and classified as a midfielder – he also has a share of corner and free-kicks but a role on the flank somewhat limits his appeal; the Welshman’s propensity for picking up injuries is also an issue, with just 33 appearances last time out. Cornelius looks the best bet of this trio, then, though a tricky start to the season may deter many.

With top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined for months due to a cruciate ligament injury, Crystal Palace new boy Dwight Gayle looks set to lead the line in Ian Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Coming in at 5.0, the former Peterborough forward looks in the driving seat to start the season for Palace – as mentioned in the recent Scout Report, Holloway has high expectations for a player who has cost a club record £4.5m. Free agent Carlton Cole is also being linked with a move to Selhurst Park but given the outlay on Gayle, he’d surely be ahead of the former West Ham man in the pecking order.

Palace’s home/away rotation with Hull could bring Danny Graham into consideration as a partner for Gayle. The Tigers on loan forward may have struggled last time out but he did, nonetheless, score 12 times in 36 appearances a couple of seasons ago for Swansea – at 5.5, he may still offer decent value and seems to have leapt ahead of Sone Aluko (5.0) in the pecking order. Alternatively, the likes of Robert Koren, Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are cheaper in the Hull midfield at 5.0 apiece and offer an alternative rotation partner for Gayle. Similarly, pairing Graham with Palace midfielder Jerome Thomas (4.5) would also set you back a combined 10.0 and offers a schedule of (NOR, SUN. CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) between Gameweeks 2-8.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe comes in 5.5 but with Arouna Kone added to the ranks and Nikica Jelavic also to consider, the Nigerian is likely to struggle for regular game time under new boss Roberto Martinez. Granted, Anichebe is versatile enough to play on the right though with Kevin Mirallas expected to get the nod, his minutes look far from guaranteed this time out. Hugo Rodallega also comes in at 5.5 and has impressed in pre-season but the Colombian remains behind Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz for the forward roles – given that Ruiz is just 0.5 more expensive and offers the assurance of starts, Rodallega – like Anichebe – is likely to depend on game time off the bench.

Indeed, there’s a real shortage of forward options in the sub 6.0 bracket. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi and Norwich’s Luciano Becchio may be cheap at 5.0 apiece but look like no more than bench fodder for their respective clubs, despite the former scoring in each of the Magpies last two matches. The arrival of Mark Hughes may promote Kenwyne Jones or Cameron Jerome (both 5.0) in the pecking order but with Peter Crouch looking likely to get the nod, Hughes is expected to go shopping for a more natural goalscorer to partner Crouch in his attempt to bring a more attacking brand of football to the Britannia.

Nicolas Anelka, on the other hand, looks to have a better Fantasy potential than most budget forwards – his versatility could see the Frenchman fielded through the middle or on the right as Steve Clarke prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku at the Hawthorns. At 5.5, Anelka – who notched twice in the Baggies’ last friendly – is also cheaper than the likes of midfielder James Morrison (6.0) and has Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland at home in the first five. Bearing in mind West Brom rotate with Aston Villa all season, he could offer a home/away partnership with Aleksandar Tonev for those eying up Paul Lambert’s new signing – at 5.0 in midfield, Tonev paired with Anelka would set you back 10.5, for those confident the Bulgarian will nail down a starting berth under Paul Lambert. Markus Rosenberg is even cheaper at 5.0 for the Baggies and notched in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies but is expected to move further down the pecking order when Clarke adds to his squad over the next few weeks.

Ricardo Vaz Te will be hoping Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem as the season gets underway. The former is typically fielded wide right by Sam Allardyce but looks the current favourite to be handed the lone forward role if Carroll fails to recover – with home games against Cardiff and Stoke and a trip to Newcastle in the first three, Vaz Te, at 5.5, may prove a decent short-term punt until the big Geordie regains full fitness.

The 6.0 Mark

For a fraction more budget, though, Fantasy managers are afforded greater security by a number of regulars. Andreas Weimann looks key to Villa’s prospects in the season ahead and racked up seven goals, four assists and 13 bonus points in his breakthrough year at the midlands outfit. Fielded on the right of a front three, the young Austrian offers the most budget-friendly route into Paul Lambert’s forward line- with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the first six, many may steer well clear, though Weimann may appeal for those on the hunt for a cheap striker in light of Villa’s double Gameweek 1.

Bryan Ruiz has been handed a 6.0 price tag after producing four goals and 10 assists in 2012/13. The Costa Rican has already scored in each of Fulham’s three pre-season games but his withdrawn role in “the hole”, allied with Dimitar Berbatov’s kind pricing and spot-kick duties, may see him struggle to convince investors of jumping on board. Four eye-catching fixtures between Gameweek 4-8 (WBA, CAR, STO, cpl) look particularly prosperous for the Cottagers, with Ruiz’s creativity likely to benefit.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino transformed Jay Rodriguez’s Fantasy potential in the latter half of last season. Having struggled to produce for previous boss Nigel Adkins, the former Burnley man proved himself to be more or less a match for Rickie Lambert under Pochettino and with game time looking secure, he’s already up and running in pre-season, scoring three times in two appearances. Lambert’s spot-kicks and set-piece duties, allied with his more advanced role and 7.5 price tag, is likely to sway many but Rodriguez’s much-improved form could turn out to be better value if his displays under the Argentine continue to flourish.

Peter Crouch will be hoping Mark Hughes’ arrival at Stoke can bolster his attacking potential. With 130 and 128 points accrued over the past couple of season, Crouch’s returns haven’t been too unimpressive – a drop in price, allied with the installation of a managers determined to go on the offensive, may subsequently see Crouch offer decent value in the season ahead. With a better quality delivery from the flanks, the six foot seven Potters forward may yet prove an overlooked differential for our three man frontlines as Stoke look to improve upon last term’s dire 34-goal haul under Tony Pulis. The fact that Stoke failed to register a single shot on target in their first match under Hughes earlier this week, however, suggests they are still clearly adjusting to his new approach.

Even at £6m I'd consider him over, say, Morrison. Even better if NEW/SUN/FUL show interest. Can't see him leaving Villa realistically though.

CS potential will decrease with Vert out the team though. Attacking full back might work though. Just need to figure out who is nailed on a LB.

BAE is an excellent LB. Those expecting regular Verty starts at LB will be disappointed, he'll cover on occasion, no more. There's young Fryers, Naughton, above mentioned Rose, plenty of cover.

For those who have Boruc and are knocking those going down the Mignolet + 4m GKer route, how certain are you that Boruc will be nailed on all season? If history serves me right, there was a fair bit of rotation going on in the Southampton goal keeper ranks last season.

I'd like to point out something regard the Mignolet situation. Mignolet is a premium keeper option who is mid-priced because he was in competition with Reina when the prices came out. He's an excellent shot-stopper (save points, penalties) playing for a team with real defensive resolve. They conceded the same amount of goals as United last season. LFC also had a pretty horrible start to the campaign and I expect them to keep on going in the right direction now that Rodger's philosophy is starting to get a foothold.

He costs 0.5m more than Foster and 1.0 more than Boruc.

He could be the difference in the games where they might concede a fair bit of chances. In general though, of course the GKs playing for teams who fare worse defensively have a better chances of save points. I just like the potential for CS + save points.

So - Shaping up nicely now with...

    Boruc - Davis
    *Luiz - Turner - Collins - Clyne - Chester
    Bale - *Hazard - Mirallas - Snodgrass - Thomas
    Aguero - *Lukaku - Giroud

My main question is not RMT but...

    A: Aguero + Giroud (fixtures)
    B. RVP + Weimann (it's RVP, and a punt obviously)

    ?

Well you see you'd have 4 players from Villa/Chelsea if you went for option B - Villa with a horrendous set of fixtures and Chelsea with United followed by a blank - far from ideal. So it depends what your escape route is for the DGW.

Thus, I'd lean towards the Aguero/Giroud line-up because, as you've pointed out, they have the nice fixtures.

Sorry, that probably seemed a bit tangential when I first asked it.

What do you guys think of this team?

    Jussi (Boruc)

    Ivanonvic Zabaleta Collins (Clyne) (Evra)
    Kagawa Hazard(C) Coutinho Silva (colback)
    Anelka Lukaku Giroud

The only reservation with that team is Kagawa as no one is quite sure what his role will be and is particularly dependent on Rooney's transfer going ahead.

    My current team and rationale:
Mignolet - Liverpool were pretty strong defensively last season and Migs has been a stand-out keeper for a couple of seasons. £5.5m is a friendly price for a nailed-on starter for a solid top 6-7 side.
Mannone - really just back-up if Liverpool have a particularly difficult away match but, at £4.5m, a cheapish starting goalkeeper for a side on the rise.
Clyne - offers some degree of attacking potential in an improving side who, for periods last season, looked decent defensively. At £4.5m is well priced.
M.Turner - as per Clyne, offers threat from set pieces, in a side who are likely to be better defensively this season and £4.5m is a very reasonable price for him.
J.Collins - likewise, West Ham did well last season and James Collins, at £4.5m, offers the best value in a solid defence whilst also providing a degree of attacking potential.
Mertesacker - Arsenal were very good defensively last season and Per Mertesacker has nailed down a starting role. He is likely to weigh in with a few from set pieces, additionally, and is not overpriced by any stretch at £5.5m
Coleman - offers very real out-of-position potential and, consequently, excellent value for money. Very likely to be first choice right winger in an attacking side with proven potential. Should be a steal at £5m.
Mirallas - as per Coleman, likely to provide out-of-position potential. Given his performances to the tail end of last season, £7.5m seems cheap in an attacking side.
Tonev - with Stilian Petrov as his sponsor, the young Bulgarian has clearly been identified as a potential star in the making. Still young but, likely to be employed in an advanced midfield role. At £5.0m I just have a feeling that, once the difficult opening few weeks of Villa's schedule are out of the way, he could be a sound investment.
Noble - on penalties for West Ham, who also have a good opening schedule this season. At £5.5m is a cheap option given his set piece input and creativity from midfield.
Coutinho - started his Liverpool career like a man possessed last season and should benefit from a full pre-season with the squad. Has performed well in pre-season and looks good to pick up where he left off. At £9.0m he is expensive but, given the potential returns, and likely to be fielded in an advanced position, he is worth the investment.
Hazard - At £9.5m he is the most expensive player in the side but demonstrated sporadically last season what he is capable of. Again, is likely to benefit from a year in the Premier League and, with a double gameweek, could hit the ground running.
Anelka - Has demonstrated in pre-season that he is central to WBA plans. He has the quality to make a mockery of the £5.5m pricing.
Rodriguez - Benefitted massively from the managerial change at Southampton last season and should kick-on further to justify a generous £6.0m price tag.
Giroud - Given that Higuan has gone elsewhere, Giroud looks a 'shoe-in' as the main Arsenal man up front. In pre-season he has been on fire and could and should more than justify his £8.5m valuation.

    Any thoughts?
    £90.5m.

It is a bit of a 'devil's advocate' type team. I won't keep it exactly like that.

What I am trying to demonstrate, I suppose, is that you can get a decent team together who may, although I accept with some risks, score well.

Spending £100m guarantees nothing! (although it might get you some paragraphs!)

Need more fire power. I get your rationale behind J-Rod and Anelka but I think they're both risks, particularly, in Anelka's case, considering Clarke's desire for rotation. Furthermore, J-Rod and Anelka may both end up playing on the right wing for their respective clubs because of their versatility. Leaves you with only one genuine centre-forward. I'd keep one of J-Rod and Anelka and upgrade the other.

Wont advise an early WC if you plan to do well this season. Not having Bale is obviously a problem so try and address that before the game starts. Also FPL is alot about the right kind of patience, if you are too rash and make too many transfers/jump on bandwagons, u will just be chasing points.

So here's my current draft, no so much a RMT but answering a few doubts -

    Mignolet (Lewis)

Ivanovic M. Turner J.Collins (Chester Parr)

    Hazard Bale Mirallas Walcott (Thomas)

    Sturridge Lukaku Van Wolf

    1) Is Lewis the best 4.0 mill goalie who is closest to starting?
    2) Is Mirallas nailed on (I assume he will play in the forward 3 if Martinez goes for 3-4-3)
    3) Does Van Wolf take penalties?

    Am still pondering,
    Mirallas ---> Snodgrass
Wolf ---> J Rod/Lambert (wait to see who plays ahead)
Sturridge ---> Aguero (since he takes penalties as well)

    Thoughts?

Yeah that defence is problematic. There's money in that defence but it's just not very well spread because of the attraction of the DGW...

What's your exit strategy, post DGW?

      1) Probably, although no 4.0 goalkeeper is close to starting imo.
      2) Yes, whatever formation
      3) His penalty record is not great at all, there's a chance he'll be on them but I fancy Hoolahan or Snodgrass to take them.

I like those three transfers as I have the three players you want to chance to 🙂

I like Mirallas. Not sure Iva will start both, I might have gone for Luiz or Cole instead. Hard to know what Mourinho thinks of Azp, but he was excellent last season and will only get better with age and experience. Sturridge might be a doubt.

Is it worth having Boruc and Mignolet? I believe it's Everton that rotate with Liverpool only, and with Robles set to fight for a starting place I think it's a bit risky to have Howard.

    Apologies for the lengthy post.

Currently have a 4 gameweek plan by which at the end we should have a clearer view of nailed-on players, good value picks, fillers etc. Opinions and thoughts would be very much appreciated. I've checked the fixtures for the respective gameweeks and I felt quite comfortable selected a (what I feel) strong side,

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    GAMEWEEK 1
    In the bank: 0.0

    Mannone/Westwood, (Boruc)
6.0 Chelsea, Collins, M. Turner, (Clyne, Chester)
    Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Snodgrass, Jarvis
    Aguero, Berbatov (Rodriguez)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    GAMEWEEK 2
Transfers: 6.0 Chelsea defender OUT, Dawson/Kaboul IN
    In the bank: 1.0

Notes: The GW1 Spurs game will give a good indication who is likely to play between Dawson and Kaboul. Other 5.0 options would include Coleman and Toure, but Spurs defence rotates fairly well with the rest of my defence for the upcoming gameweeks.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    GAMEWEEK 3
Transfers: Hazard OUT, Mirallas/Ben Arfa IN
    In the bank: 3.0

Notes: Hazard sold for blank GW. Mirallas priority unless in the case of price-rise, in which case Ben Arfa is a more than capable option.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    GAMEWEEK 4
Transfers: Aguero OUT, Van Persie IN
    In the bank: 0.0

Notes: By now the Rooney situation should have been resolved, and hopefully, after a tough opening schedule, United will be in a position where they can't afford to rest Van Persie before the upcoming Champions League fixture. On the chance that Aguero explodes and looks a better option than RVP, instead bring in Shinji Kagawa for Snodgrass/Jarvis.

Fair enough, will be the popular policy no doubt. I'm fairly happy with two Chelsea players on the basis that not many of their team is nailed on, particularly given the Confeds Cup (I read that Spanish players could be rested for the Hull game?). That and it'd be a bit of a hassle trying to get rid/having to bench them for GW3. I think I'll take my chances with just Hazard and the seemingly most nailed-on 6.0 defender.

Soton's so-called strong defensive finish to the season:

Last 12 games included new,QPR,nor, rea,WHM,swa,WBA,sun,STO. Only 3 clean sheets (all away from home).

Not bad but I don't think that's really setting anything on fire.

I think I like A. I have no idea what to make of the City situation, but logically one of Silva/Navas/Jovetic/Negrado/Aguero has to start every game on the bench, and that's without factoring in Dzeko/Nasri/Milner. So I have no idea which of Negrado/Aguero will be better, but I really like Berbs to have a big season. He's earmarked as my Giroud/Lukaku replacement early on.

Given 4.0 is cheapest for a defender who will start and 4.5 for all other positions, if you want a 4.5 jeeper and mid for bench and two 4.0 defenders, the minimum for a proper backup bench is 17m.

I have gone for a 4.5 keeper, 4.0 defender, 4.5 rotating defenders and a 5.0 mid. So my bench minimum is 18m to start off.

I have nowt in the bank, so £82m on field. £62.5m in front 7. Meaning £19.5 is on field in defensive 4.

    How much have you all spent on;

    a) Front 7

    Mignolet Davis

    Clyne Coleman Collins Turner Chester

    Bale Hazard Silva Tonev Thomas

    Anelka Lukaku RVP

    0.5m in the bank

    Play mignolet every game
Defence all rotates nicely over the season
Tonev rotates with anelka over the season
