Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out the eighth article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this morning. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders, we then looked at Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders. Up next, then, we turn our attentions to the men up front, focussing on players no more than 6.0:

Up to 5.5 Mark

Cardiff new boy Andreas Cornelius is likely to earn plenty game time in his debut season for the Bluebirds. “The Danish Tank” racked up 18 goals in 32 appearances for FC Copenhagen in 2012/13 but with just one full season of professional football behind him, there are concerns he may take time to adapt. Malky Mackay’s penchant for a target man within a lone striker system should ensure the 5.5 priced Cornelius plenty starts, while the likes of Fraizer Campbell (also 5.5) is more likely to earn game time off the bench when the Welsh club need to alter their approach and switch to two up front later on in games. Craig Bellamy is similarly priced and classified as a midfielder – he also has a share of corner and free-kicks but a role on the flank somewhat limits his appeal; the Welshman’s propensity for picking up injuries is also an issue, with just 33 appearances last time out. Cornelius looks the best bet of this trio, then, though a tricky start to the season may deter many.

With top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined for months due to a cruciate ligament injury, Crystal Palace new boy Dwight Gayle looks set to lead the line in Ian Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Coming in at 5.0, the former Peterborough forward looks in the driving seat to start the season for Palace – as mentioned in the recent Scout Report, Holloway has high expectations for a player who has cost a club record £4.5m. Free agent Carlton Cole is also being linked with a move to Selhurst Park but given the outlay on Gayle, he’d surely be ahead of the former West Ham man in the pecking order.

Palace’s home/away rotation with Hull could bring Danny Graham into consideration as a partner for Gayle. The Tigers on loan forward may have struggled last time out but he did, nonetheless, score 12 times in 36 appearances a couple of seasons ago for Swansea – at 5.5, he may still offer decent value and seems to have leapt ahead of Sone Aluko (5.0) in the pecking order. Alternatively, the likes of Robert Koren, Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are cheaper in the Hull midfield at 5.0 apiece and offer an alternative rotation partner for Gayle. Similarly, pairing Graham with Palace midfielder Jerome Thomas (4.5) would also set you back a combined 10.0 and offers a schedule of (NOR, SUN. CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) between Gameweeks 2-8.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe comes in 5.5 but with Arouna Kone added to the ranks and Nikica Jelavic also to consider, the Nigerian is likely to struggle for regular game time under new boss Roberto Martinez. Granted, Anichebe is versatile enough to play on the right though with Kevin Mirallas expected to get the nod, his minutes look far from guaranteed this time out. Hugo Rodallega also comes in at 5.5 and has impressed in pre-season but the Colombian remains behind Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz for the forward roles – given that Ruiz is just 0.5 more expensive and offers the assurance of starts, Rodallega – like Anichebe – is likely to depend on game time off the bench.

Indeed, there’s a real shortage of forward options in the sub 6.0 bracket. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi and Norwich’s Luciano Becchio may be cheap at 5.0 apiece but look like no more than bench fodder for their respective clubs, despite the former scoring in each of the Magpies last two matches. The arrival of Mark Hughes may promote Kenwyne Jones or Cameron Jerome (both 5.0) in the pecking order but with Peter Crouch looking likely to get the nod, Hughes is expected to go shopping for a more natural goalscorer to partner Crouch in his attempt to bring a more attacking brand of football to the Britannia.

Nicolas Anelka, on the other hand, looks to have a better Fantasy potential than most budget forwards – his versatility could see the Frenchman fielded through the middle or on the right as Steve Clarke prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku at the Hawthorns. At 5.5, Anelka – who notched twice in the Baggies’ last friendly – is also cheaper than the likes of midfielder James Morrison (6.0) and has Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland at home in the first five. Bearing in mind West Brom rotate with Aston Villa all season, he could offer a home/away partnership with Aleksandar Tonev for those eying up Paul Lambert’s new signing – at 5.0 in midfield, Tonev paired with Anelka would set you back 10.5, for those confident the Bulgarian will nail down a starting berth under Paul Lambert. Markus Rosenberg is even cheaper at 5.0 for the Baggies and notched in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies but is expected to move further down the pecking order when Clarke adds to his squad over the next few weeks.

Ricardo Vaz Te will be hoping Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem as the season gets underway. The former is typically fielded wide right by Sam Allardyce but looks the current favourite to be handed the lone forward role if Carroll fails to recover – with home games against Cardiff and Stoke and a trip to Newcastle in the first three, Vaz Te, at 5.5, may prove a decent short-term punt until the big Geordie regains full fitness.

The 6.0 Mark

For a fraction more budget, though, Fantasy managers are afforded greater security by a number of regulars. Andreas Weimann looks key to Villa’s prospects in the season ahead and racked up seven goals, four assists and 13 bonus points in his breakthrough year at the midlands outfit. Fielded on the right of a front three, the young Austrian offers the most budget-friendly route into Paul Lambert’s forward line- with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the first six, many may steer well clear, though Weimann may appeal for those on the hunt for a cheap striker in light of Villa’s double Gameweek 1.

Bryan Ruiz has been handed a 6.0 price tag after producing four goals and 10 assists in 2012/13. The Costa Rican has already scored in each of Fulham’s three pre-season games but his withdrawn role in “the hole”, allied with Dimitar Berbatov’s kind pricing and spot-kick duties, may see him struggle to convince investors of jumping on board. Four eye-catching fixtures between Gameweek 4-8 (WBA, CAR, STO, cpl) look particularly prosperous for the Cottagers, with Ruiz’s creativity likely to benefit.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino transformed Jay Rodriguez’s Fantasy potential in the latter half of last season. Having struggled to produce for previous boss Nigel Adkins, the former Burnley man proved himself to be more or less a match for Rickie Lambert under Pochettino and with game time looking secure, he’s already up and running in pre-season, scoring three times in two appearances. Lambert’s spot-kicks and set-piece duties, allied with his more advanced role and 7.5 price tag, is likely to sway many but Rodriguez’s much-improved form could turn out to be better value if his displays under the Argentine continue to flourish.

Peter Crouch will be hoping Mark Hughes’ arrival at Stoke can bolster his attacking potential. With 130 and 128 points accrued over the past couple of season, Crouch’s returns haven’t been too unimpressive – a drop in price, allied with the installation of a managers determined to go on the offensive, may subsequently see Crouch offer decent value in the season ahead. With a better quality delivery from the flanks, the six foot seven Potters forward may yet prove an overlooked differential for our three man frontlines as Stoke look to improve upon last term’s dire 34-goal haul under Tony Pulis. The fact that Stoke failed to register a single shot on target in their first match under Hughes earlier this week, however, suggests they are still clearly adjusting to his new approach.

Too much money in defence and the strikers on offer this year will rack up points, I honestly think it is a mistake to not consider better strikers and no Liverpool coverage with there good start to the season.

Sturridge mostly will miss GW1.. even if he plays its a real fitness issue.. Aspas and Borini are there to strengthen squad.. and both risk minimal game time with Sturridge and wingers as the way to go.. Do u suggest I swap Sturridge for Benteke after seeing their form in two weeks? Then kick Luiz for a 4.5 and get a good strike partner later? Because I do not like the idea of starting a striker who hasnt even played in pre season

I see u r sticking to this team for the start of the season. Ok but consider Man City as well when switching from Benteke as their next two are Cardiff and Hull. I honestly think u should downgrade a midfielder significantly and get a good strike partner but all I can do is advise.

I think playing 451 is a really terrible plan, sorry. Youll be really left behind early on if the big hitters up front start firing, as itll be tough for you to upgrade Moore and Gayle easily.

Thats there. Im never ever upgrading Moore. He's gonna rot on my bench till GW38.. As for Gayle.. He's 5 mill.. I'll take two mill from Luiz+Benteke and put it on him.. and get Wolf.. to go with Lambert/Berba.. All sorted by GW3. Reason I go with 4-5-1 is with Sturridge,Rooney lacking fitness RVP,Bony's tough schedule and Lukaku, Aguero unsure of role.. we cant determine who'll do well till GW3.. after that its easy to kick a poor performing midfielder for them

Your forward line is weak to the extreme - I'd reallocate some of those midfield funds.

Transfer plans more than a week ahead can get really messy because of injuries and unpredictable player form.

Why would you want to rotate three defenders for one position is my question though. Save half a mill its worth a lot in mdfield. Yeah Mbiwa is touted to become Newcastle captain in a few years.. and with his form in preseason I'm saying he'll start over Stevie T. Cant be assured though but he's being praised a lot..

Yeah, I saw he captained the team against Motherwell (in an admittedly second-string team) and kept his place for the next two friendlies (the last of which looked very close to a first choice XI).

As for the 3-way rotation - I want it to be flexible enough that I could play 2 of the 3 on any given GW if required.

I think that maybe Cardiff mightn't be too bad defensively this season, but I don't know too much about their guys.

Even though (or maybe because) he has a DGW, I'd try to replace Baker (in your team) with another £4.0m defender, but I wouldn't have a clue who. If you could find someone to complement Collins and Yanga-Mbiwa rotation-wise that would be good, I think.

If you're spending 5 mill on a midfielder u better get Koren instead.. he's on dead ball duty.. Otherwise thats a kickass team! the fact that u have 4 players in the DGW category means u use up all ur subs.. trying to seat them.. else end up playing Brady/Shaw in a suffocating GW3 with not so good fixtures

I realise that about Koren, but I'm Irish so I'm going with Brady - I started the season with Wes Hoolahan two seasons ago. And yes, I looked ahead to GW3 and my midfield in particular have a tough collective bunch of fixtures - I'm going to try to ride that out.

Also, slight edit to my team above: I forgot that I switched Luiz to Ivanovic.

Why man? I would choose Luiz wholely on the basis that Ivanovic will sub out to Azpilicueta for the second game vs Villa FOR SURE. Although the CS against Villa may not be immensely probable anyway.. Luiz will pair with Cahill and Terry alternatively is my deduction.. more chances of the sheet.. less offensive points though

Maybe. I think the whole Chelsea squad is a rotation minefield for the opening GWs. I was assuming a guaranteed start for GW1 Ivanovic in the easier fixture, but that's a good point you make about Luiz. I might reconsider. Ashley Cole is the obvious pick, but I just don't like him.

I was also uncertain about Chicharito but moyes has announced that Man United are going with a two striker set. It looks to be Van Persie and Chicharito as those two strikers. I chose Evra because like Baines he is a good (not great) defender but he scores a lot of points attacking as a winger.

At start of 2011/12 season, still has 3 years to run. Bale will not move this summer. He may not sign new deal, he might, either way, I'd expect him to look at his position next summer.

He did. This is another re-negotiation.

Personally when they did it last season I thought it was only so they could increase his value (with a longer contract) and eventually sell him this summer.

The same could be happening again. AVB tries to hang onto him for one more year to try for a top 4 finish. Let's be honest, without Bale they're not gonna be anywhere near that top 4.

No it's not, but if they're resigned to losing him next summer then putting him on a bigger, longer contract means that they can cash in even more.

The way I see it, when a player is bought, clubs are essentially buying out their contract. That's why some players have stupid valuations. If you imagine trying to buy out your mobile phone contract that is 4 years long instead of 2 years, you'll have to pay a hell of a lot more.

Or am I looking at that in a completely idiotic way?

Nah, longer contract usually means higher transfer values. I just don't think that it plays a big part in their motivation to extend, but I might be underestimating Levy 😀

Agreed. They are doing it to keep him, but realistically even if they get CL football can you see him staying beyond 1/2 more seasons?

Spurs probably won't ever realistically challenge for the PL year-in-year-out and will be some way off the CL.

If he moved to RM or Man U though, he's got a chance of winning things for sure, and if you're that good surely you wouldn't want to pass that opportunity up?

I just think AVB has maybe said, stay one more year on a higher wage (new contract) and then we'll let you go next summer. Might have a % of the transfer fee in part of the contract as well.

Or maybe that's me being a cynic haha

He has time left on his contract. I think Spurs are right to cling as much as they possibly can. With investment in the forward line, as we expect to see Soldado, I can't see any reason why Spurs can't go one better than last season and give Bale the CL football which he deserves.

On the one hand, Nolan has a lovely set of fixtures but there still seems to be confusion about whether he performs without Carroll. On the other hand, Sessegnon has the potential to be Sunderland's heart and soul. From what I saw in the Spurs game, he seemed to be thriving in 'the hole'. Sessegnon is a gamble that could pay off.

Is it worth taking 3dgw that includes a Chelsea defender?
Other than cole/cech, none are sure to play twice.
Also, to get them all out by gw3, it is a -4.
Assuming it was 2 and 6 points they got, is 8-4 (so 4) worth it? Even 12-4 is only 8.
I have migs. If i went him instead of cech week 1, i fancy him to get 6. That would beat 4 anyway and isnt too far off 8.

Surely getting 3 attackers is better if going 3dgw?
2 is minimum. 4 not worth it in my view.
    3 worth a punt though.

Any views on this? I am getting Hazard(c), Benteke and Lukaku.

How long do you wait before jumping onto a relatively unknown player in the early season? I seem to have missed all the early season wonders a number of which went on to be serious season keepers eg Michu, Charlie Adam etc. I always talk myself out of getting them with "their run will end soon or the fixtures are getting tougher" Does anyone have a plan or approach to these situations especially early season.

There's plenty of luck involved as not all bandwagons work out. When their price is rocketing week after week though you may as well get involved. Reading the stats on the members section can also help give you confidence that the run will continue, i.e. still having lots of shots on target etc.

Do we all agree Aspas will lead the line if Sturridge isn't fit to start in the first GW? Realistically, what other options do they have at the moment?

Aspas' scoring record is decent, 12 goals in 33 games for a team barely scraping out on top in the relegation-battle.

Cheap as chips considering Liverpool's earlier buys. Will monitor the Sturridge situation and take it from there, I can always do Miralles -> Snodster and Aspas -> Lukaku/Berb/whatever.

Borini is too injury prone for FPL, I have no doubt he can play after seeing him live the other night. Hope he can an injury free run.

Any gaping holes in my team?

    Foster (Boruc)
    Coleman, Collins, Baker (Clyne, Chester)
Hazard (c) Lamps, Snoddy, Bale (Thomas)
    RvP, Lukaku, Rodriguez

I plan on doing Lukaku and Lamps for Walcott and Vaz Te in the coming weeks

    Thank you

No City and Arsenal is a real worry. Don't lose sight of a bunch of teams' good fixtures just because of the double gameweek.

      I quite like it.

Lampard slightly unlikely to play both games in the double. To say you've fitted Bale and RVP in the rest of the team could look a lot worse.

Lack of Arsenal and City might do you in. (And possibly Liverpool, but I'm finding them hard to fit in myself.)

I'm gutted, actually returned with an improved offer after Norwich dived in. Wants PL football simple as that. Only good news is that West Ham and Newcastle are looking at other options apart from Remy. Lets hope we can hang on to him.

Suprised anyone would move for Remy considering he is on bail at the moment. Norwich really swooped in last minute, such a shame. Charlie Austin is latest name linked. Very disappointed Mackie has gone too, he has left some good memories particualrly the dramatic winner against Liverpool.

Ok Guys here goes first team of the season!

    RMT!

    Mignolet---Boruc

    Coleman----Assou-Ekotto----Mert----Clyne----Amorebieta

    Hazard----Mirallas----Wilshere----Lampard----Tonev

    Aspas----RVP----Berbatov

Wilshere is obviously a bit of a gamble, but other than that... any thoughts?

    Migs

    Clyne. Collins Luiz

    Bale Hazard (c). Tonev. Walcott

    Lukaku. Benteke. Sturridge

Load up for DGW then wildcard in GW2......worked for the winner last year, plus I'll only knee-jerk by GW 3 or 4 anyway 🙂

    Madness?

Actually, he won despite this strategy, not because of it. His 3 Reading players (Federici, Harte and Pog) only scored 3, 2 and 7 respectively in DGW1.

Do you mean it'll only start working once the season starts? That makes sense actually 😀 For now I'll build my team on there manually, does it save the team I build? Didn't seem to when I build it this morning and switched between areas.
