The Community Round Up

Squad balance and the influence of the Fantasy Premier Leagues’s new Bonus Points System on our formations were amongst the key discussions taking place on the boards this week. We also look at some of our posters’ worst ever Gameweeks and catch up with the latest from our community’s leagues.

The Hottest Topics

The international break provides a useful time for Fantasy managers to take stock of their team. It’s a time to consider playing the market with a wildcard, saving transfers or waiting nervously for your players to return from their travels unscathed.

In our discussion on international break strategy, Newarse was among those looking to invest in Wayne Rooney ahead of Gameweek 4’s clash with Crystal Palace, while SAAB admitted he was “dying to” wildcard. Sadly Rooney’s head injury has since put paid to Newarse’s plans.

For those considering wildcarding over the break, though, Get In urges caution. Similarly, Triggerlips has also been looking at how much a wildcard is worth and wonders whether it could be best used later in the season when the double Gameweeks mount up.

Impressive Tackle’s post late last week on squad balance proved one of the most popular yet. He looks at the ideal spread of money across the team, which will come in handy for those currently on a wildcard.

Elsewhere, Southampton fan Bayern Badonde has been keeping a close eye on his team’s midfield in an attempt to help us better understand their mid-price options. With so many forward options on offer this will prove useful to those looking for an alternative to Rickie Lambert.

For many, especially those that captained Robin Van Persie or Edin Dzeko, Gameweek 3 was a horror show.  When we asked what has been your worst ever Gameweek, SW6 had last season’s Gameweek 2 tally of just 27 firmly etched in his memory. Similarly, Adam West will never forget selling Dimitar Berbatov just prior to the Bulgarian putting five goals past Blackburn for Man United.

Finally, the Bonus Point System continues to vex the community, especially the lack of points for assists. Blue Tiger was on hand to run the rule over the new system and show the dramatic changes it is making to our formations.

Community Leagues

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First – 2 Million+ Club league, open to those with an overall worse than two million in the first five gameweeks, Goyko Locos continues to lead the competitors epic race for a respectable rank. He is now 920,000th in the FPL game with no hits or wildcard. To join the other 18 teams in this league the code is 459213-545168.

Meanwhile, in Thomas and Peppie & Felix‘s Friends Life H2H Competition Thomass, Forca Inter and Daniel top each of their three groups.

Forca Inter is also one of the five league leaders in In Tommy We Trust‘s  competition. The other four are Smarty Pants, Tommy Tour, Mind Over Mata and Binji.

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition saw 47 knocked out, with 934 left. The safety score was 34. In his Early Bird league 475 qualified and 256 were knocked out.

With a score of 207 Dr Ennet leads Fifa Las Vegas’s league, closely followed by Somebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up on 205 and Messimerized on 199.

In FFS UEFA’s leagues Shipsontrev was the top weekly scorer with 68 points. Lateriser12’s captaining of Olivier Giroud earned him this week’s Order of Extreme Valour award. Special mention goes to The Light Knight for his audacious decision to hand the armband to Hatem Ben Arfa. Tommy Tour is another doing well. He sits in first place in their La Liga on nine pts and is 529th in the world.

FFS Uefa have also announced details of their latest tournament, which is open to 737 community members and based around the FA Cup. More details can be found here and the registration form can be found here. Those already involved in the FFS UEFA leagues and those who applied unsuccessfully to be a part of that competition have all been given an automatic space so do not need to apply.

I'm not an everton fan so I cant say anything from that perspective but from a football perspective Barkley is a better player than Gibson and Martinez aint afraid to start young players so I'd say he will keep his place.
Barkley, Osman and McCarthy as a 3 man mid I reckon...

Impossible to say, but i don't think Gibson being back will affect him. He's young so Martinez will give him a few rests imo. As of now though, he seems the favourite for the attacking mid role, so should be safe until his level drops, or results dont happen.

This is how i see it:

Gibson and McCarthy competing to partner Barry in the double pivot.

Osman is right now a benchwarmer but he's the closest to taking Barkley's spot.

Pienaar could move central which would accomodate for Deulofeu out wide, and Barkley would be dropped. He should be good for a few starts, but will be rotated on occasion.

Don't see anything wrong with that as a 5th mid though

Personally think he's been okay, but I've seen the last two Everton games in full (missed the first one) and haven't found Barkley to be anything special.
He has potential obviously, but his performances in those two games were all over the place. Lost a lot of possession easily.. I can't see him as being fully nailed on at all with the new signings. He does produce some lovely moments though.

I agree with that tbh. Just don't think Martinez rates Osman in that role. Barry should make them pretty solid in midfield, which could compensate for Barkley's bad attributes. He's got good workrate, and a great shot on him, so the signs are promising. Not fully nailed on for sure though

Activated my WC and now making some money, but also have an idea for the squad I want. What do you think of this:

    Mignolet Boruc
    Terry Vidic Sakho Collins Chester
    Hazard Silva Lamela Brady Whittingham
    Sturridge Benteke Giroud

    0.1 in bank.

I have also been thinking of getting Soldado in for Benteke (have Soldado in my team) and downgrading Lamela to Ben Arfa.

    Cheers.

Personally I'd go soldado over bentekenand Ben arfa over lamela.

Also, terry is not nailed on for every game so I'd think about getting someone who is; Walker or Mertesacker maybe?

Lastly I think Walcott is a much better option that Hazard. Doubling up on them given their upcoming fixtures could be a good idea.

      Good advice?

Whos the best fantasy option from the last minute midfielders - Fellaini, Lamela, Ozil or Eriksen?

Based on their price and returns who are you choosing and why?

And are there any mids you rate above your favourite from this four?

Pretty much the question I've been asking myself too.

Would be keen to hear what the guys & gals here think.

I'd say Ozil has got to rank at the top, moving to a team he'll slot into positionally and style of play. Has a mighty and consistent record for the past few years. Surely his quality is further proven by how peeved Real players were by his move.

I agree, Ozil is top of my list too.
I have Lamela, Eriksen and Fellaini next and the only mid I prefer to Ozil is probably Walcott.
I could have both, although that means going without Giroud, which I'm not sure I wanna do....
3 players from arsenal and 28m invested in them might be too much even with their fixtures......
        decisions decisions 🙂

I've gone with Wally, Giroud and Ozil at the moment. Does look a little bit overkill..... And the week they don't score I'll be pissed.

The Spuds midfield is becoming as much a minefield as Chelskis... although you'd have to say Lamela is top of the pecking order there.

I see arsenal scoring more than spurs overall, so that's my reasoning. Also think that unlike the Bale days, in which he monopolised all the points, Spurs mids will be sharing them about (much like the City forwards).

Wouldn't mind playing 6 across the middle though!

Not inclined towards any really. Ozil's obviously the classiest, but I've giot Giroud and will bring in Walcott before I even consider Ozil. Really hoping one of the Spurs boys shine though, because it'll make it easier for me to cover Spurs and trade Soldado for Benteke.

What are your opinions on footballers wages?

Personally I believe they deserve them for the following reasons :

It's a bloody hard job. Everyone can play football, but when you think about it, only 1500? People play in the very top leagues, earning these huge sums of money. That's out of hundreds of millions of people.

They are individual businesses. Bale will repay his fee of £85m very quickly. Shirt sales, and other merchandise sales and of course the potential for increased trophy and league takings are increased.

They have a Very short career where they earn (18-30?) granted it's massive money in this period. Comparably to a golfer, movie star etc who have a career from 10-60 in some cases a footballers life time earnings will be smaller.

    What are your thoughts?

In the majority of cases anyway!

I am an auditor by trade so I have seen how valuable footballers are to the company (club),

If we paid a footballer £35.000 a year, the same as a nurse as so many people say, would they really have such an attraction to the game?

Everyone wants to become a baller for the fame, the money (granted some don't) and if this drives them to be the best, we pay to watch them - then who are we to complain when they get paid loads

They would, as many already do in the lower leagues.

The discussion should not be about footballers but about "the best in the world" no matter of discipline. It's a social/society thing, not just confined to football. Imho.

A lot. Probably well into the hundreds of thousands.

Granted it doesn't compare here, but there's a huge difference.

One is a profit generating venture.

The other is a charitable service.

You must expect differences here. If we start paying doctors 15.6m a year a la Bale, we'll quickly plunge into a deep hole.

The reason they expect less is because they have different motivations and goals in life

Problem with the supply and demand argument is that the riches at the top of the tree don't filter down the pyramid, but the player wages do. 9 clubs in the championship had a player wages to turnover ratio greater than 100% in 2011/12. That's simply not sustainable.

They don't deserve the millions at all and I don't agree that its a hard job. You have to be born with talent and athleticism to make it as a footballer, if you have these then playing football is easy....

The money they make is just accidental because every big corporation see it as an opportunity to advertise and sell overpriced things to stupid kids and young folk.

150 quid for a pair of football boots that cost 4 quid to make, just because Messi wears them, please f off adidas (and Nike).
Basically the money is in no way related to the work, only to the popularity and exploitation of the game as a sales platform.
And dont get me started on what FIFA have done to it!!!!

Humans 5,000 years ago had brains that were even larger.

"We do know from archaeological data that pretty much everywhere we can measure — Europe, China, South Africa, Australia — that brains have shrunk about 9 cubic inches (150 cubic centimeters), from an average of about 82 in3 (1,350 cm3). That's roughly 10 percent," University of Wisconsin at Madison paleoanthropologist John Hawks told LiveScience in 2009.

Researchers don't know why brains might be shrinking, but some theorize that they're evolving to be more efficient. Others think our skulls are getting smaller because our diets include more easily chewable foods and so large, strong jaws are no longer required.

Whatever the reason, brain size doesn't directly correlate with intellect, so there's no evidence that ancient man was brainier than humans of today.

The lack of natural selection nowadays does make me suspect ancient man was more intelligent. Simplest explanation too. (Though not necessarily right)

We have to remember people could only use their intelligence to build on what had been built before.

Throw one of us into the hunter gatherer age and we'd starve.

              Nature or nurture?

Gotta disagree, useless idiots get nurtured into old age by a system that pays them, feeds them, protects them, in any natural system they'd be dead long before breeding age. World population is unsustainable.
No seat belts = people drive more carefully or die, should be the same in all parts of society.

Well yeah, essentially no selection is taking place now. The relationship between wealth and number of kids is well known to be inverse, huge amount of evidence for that. Of course the big question there is, is there a relationship between intelligence and number of kids? Worth a search but it is hard to imagine it not also being inverse.

Course, there's also the truth that proper evolution is nasty, brutish and short in terms of human life, like Hobbes said I think. So this is the compromise we have.

Most of us only use 10% of the brains processing capacity anyway. Once we unlock part of the other 90% and become more efficient, the brain size will reduce dramatically.

I can't comment at it looks shite with him in there.

        Try one without!

Really, what's your reasoning for having him?

I accept he's a brilliant striker but Man U look rubbish and other teams look tasty and their strikers are performing. He may get a hatty against Palace but that changes nothing, especially when on a wc!

Who would you play in the next GW(if you had to)

      Dzeko (stk)
      Coleman (CHE)

Seriously considering playing 5 at the back.....

      Sakho/Vidic/Chester/Shaw/Coleman

Dzeko, even though I doubt he'll start.

After last week, I'm not convinced Dzeko will start.

I'd roll the dice on Coleman but anything more than 1 or 2 points would be a bonus.

vidic and evra seem to be the most nailed on. I have a feeling jones will get games at CM once Rafael is fit so he could be an option.

Vidic. £6m is cheap for him IMO. Moyes is VERY conservative (I'm a Blue so well aware of his temperament) - and given their quality and fixtures he's a VERY safe bet (but not a differential).

Evra must feel aggrieved + overpriced in comparison

        Jones injury risk

Ferdinand - cheaper, but would rather still rather find the money for Vidic

      A)
      Mignolet/4,0
      Walker/Coleman/Koscielny (Gabbidon - Chester)
Silva - Hazard - Walcott - Brady (Ward Prowse)
      Benteke - Sturridge - Giroud

With around 1,5 in bank - Could upgrade Brady/Ward Prowse/Coleman/Walcott(To özil)

      B)
      Mignolet/4,0
      Walker/Coleman/Koscielny (Gabbidon - Chester)
Silva - Hernández - Walcott - Brady (Ward Prowse)
      RVP - Sturridge - Giroud

      0.2 in bank

A but with the money spent improving that defence and getting a reserve keeper.

I'd say B but drop Silva for someone like Lampard, and use the spare cash for defence.
