The Community Round Up

Injuries have ripped apart the “template” teams in the last week or so, creating a variety of discussions in the community, which chew over potential replacements. With the January wildcard beckoning, our focus on the week’s hot topics revisit chat on the options in midfield and goalkeeper rotation pairings. In addition, a late entry from today’s activity took a wry look at the some of the characters that make up the Fantasy Football Scout community. As usual, we round things off with a check on the latest from our community leagues, congratulating an FA Cup winner along the way.

The Hottest Topics

Aaron Ramsey’s injury at Upton Park looks to have put the Welsh wonder out of the picture, causing much consternation and deliberation amongst his army of owners. From the community reaction it’s clear that some will gamble on clinging on to avoid the cash loss, but for others the setback meant he was shown the door. Among those on hand to offer advice on a sensible Ramsey exit strategy was @ocprodigy with the in-form Theo Walcott and Yohan Cabaye cited as ready-made replacments.

Even before Ramsey’s injury, the community was considering a dramatic ditching of his services. Earlier in the week TW asked whether now was the best time for Fantasy managers to cash in on Ramsey’s price rise and look elsewhere.

Those considering a downgrade to liberate funds could find some timely advice via a consideration of budget midfield options with Floydy_Floyd tipping Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling to prosper in 2014. PTC meanwhile has his eye on the assist potential of Barry Bannan as the Pulis-inspired Palace revival goes through the gears.

It wasn’t just gaps in midfield that were opening up over Christmas. Romelu Lukaku may have finally broken out of his dry spell with the winner over Southampton today but, having gone five starts without a goal before today’s fixture, there was plenty of fidgeting amongst his owners in the community. In the Lukaku debate , Marr pointed to form over fixtures, while SkyCell, perhaps wisely, gave the Belgian the next three outings to prove his worth. Maybe today’s goal has changed the landscape, although almost 100,000 shed his services before yesterday’s deadline.

Elsewhere, Nice to Finally Michu gazed into 2014 to assess the best goalkeeper pairings on offer. His excellent post looks at the best placed pairs over the next ten Gameweeks, with Sunderland’s Vito Mannone and the Gunners Wojciech Szczesny among the standout options on offer.

Finally, JDoyles profiling of some of the FFS community “characters” hoovered up votes and raised smiles aplenty as Gameweek 19 drew to a close. Are you amongst the poster personality types in his breakdown?

The Community Tournaments

FFS UEFA’s FA Cup competition has been one of the community’s largest to date. Finally a winner has emerged with Fantasy Football Scout community moderator Ryan’s Tranmere Rovers beating Fantasy Kid’s Luton Town in a nail-biting conclusion. There was further joy amongst our moderator team, with Evs being crowned champion in FFS UEFA’s Premier League H2H competition.

HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First 2 Million Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five game weeks, now has 19 teams within a rank of one million and seven in the top 250,000. With an overall rank of 70,106 Teltzham Hotspurs is in the lead.

Double Everton defense over Evans or Debuchy has been a complete disaster. Are people sticking with this plan or is it time to abandon ship?

Do you think Flanagan will play January 1st?

FPL predict him back then, but he is marked with a red flag. And what about Jose Enriques return?

Yep Agger should play, meaning Sakho/Cissokho for LB.

I think Rodgers has realised he's made mistakes with his summer signings though. Moses, Cissokho have been and the loans could be terminated.

Aspas is not good enough for Liverpool and will be sold.

If my 5th mid is Barkley, who could easily be benched on New Years, should I sell Silva ?

I'd love to hear people's views on 'double defenders' from the same team. Whether they're for or against it.

In my opinion the risk is too high for the potential outcomes. Apart from Southampton, what other teams have had a decent amount of clean sheets in a single run in which people have favoured them to do well?
Only a few weeks ago people were doubling/tripling up on Everton's defence, which they haven't seen any real returns on, apart from Coleman owners.
There's talk now about a double Arsenal defence. Yes it may work out, but I honestly believe 'double defenders' aren't worth the risk at all.

I'm a bit unsure at first on doubling up as I would like to spread the risk. Then got persuaded on doubling up on EVE (Howard & Coleman) Howard got good ppg before and a bit sensible move at that time to get rid of Migs and now I think I made a wrong move as if I get a cheaper GK the extra money could have served my other concerns to upgrade as well. Though If Eve would had a string of CS I might say otherwise.

I still have Mignolet, and when I do finally get rid of him on my wildcard, then I'll be getting in a keeper who's team can keep clean sheets, but mainly focus on the save points side.

In general, I'm against double defense mainly due to putting too much egg in one fragile 1-goal-and-it's-gone basket. I prefer to hedge my defenders.

But there are certainly some scenarios where this may apply, such as Southampton earlier this season and Stoke last season.

Comparing those two, there are a few factors that is in line.

First one - which is the most important - is that we KNOW that they're most likely to get a CS, not just guessing based on fixtures. We know Britania is a hard place to score a goal last season and so is Pochetino's Southampton.

Second one is the fixtures. Both have very good HOME fixtures for a long run, so it's more of an investment rather than a punt. You don't have to spend a FT to transfer them out 3-4 GWs later.

Third one is the price. Both Cameron and Clyne are cheap defenders. The doubling up actually saves us money to spend elsewhere which in overall increase our point potentials.

Short punting on expensive defenders (Howards, Mertes) are more risky and spend our budget. So if it fails, then we're screwed because we put a lot into it.

But Everton were doing well defensively, and had the fixtures.

Most double defense fulfills the first criteria. Usually a team is on a good run of CS before people considering to double up their defense. Arsenal is good defensively too this season.

And fixture wise Everton had idk 6 good GWs from GW 16.

If money no issue then it's just a case of good punt go wrong. I think the fact that it's festive period where players are tired and sloppy goals are scored (I think more goals around these period, CMIIW)

And Coleman + Howard is expensive. I could use the extra million to do upgrade elsewhere

If it works it's genius, if it doesn't you get hit hard. Those are the risks. Frankly if you think they are the most likely team to get a a few clean sheets, then why not? Often people just see the bad week when it didn't work out and ignore the good weeks where it did.

Stuck with Silva and Berbatov on New Year with only 1FT and 0.9m in bank. Hazard might get a rest.

    Evra // Mertesacker // Coleman // [Baker // Chester]

how can a player drop more than he rose

Say initial ownership of X is 1000
now 100 transfer out he falls 0.1
then some transfer in he rises 0.1
& some transfers out he falls 0.5

FPL price change is a farce

when a player is flagged, he needs more transfers out than usal to drop (150% etc..), when flag is removed his price is protected 7 days (or) and transfers in(out) reset to zero

In one day, Ramsey has 400% transfers in rate (Total FPL show it), but he only rises 0,1M. Same thing about dropping

A player only rise 0,3M per GW though his transfers in about 800%/week.

So many things affect it, not simple to calculate as you say

Its because when a player is at their base price they only need 10% NTO to fall while the price to rise is fixed at like 30k. Players are also protected from a risk the first 8 days in the league so someone Ozil came in and gain15% ownership without being able to rise once so he could suffere a heavy fall without ever going up in price.

It's not a farce at all. Rises are based on set thresholds for all players, while falls are based on ownership. If both were based on percentages you would have ridiculous rises and if both were based on fixed numbers you'd have next to no falls. Low ownership high risk players like Panty are an accident waiting to happen as they get enough new owners for a rise, but all the owners are active so when he is no longer playing they all dump and he drops like a stone.

have abs no idea what to do with my team....not having coleman is killing me (esp since i sold him on the gw6 WC given that i had him from gw1...bloody baines!), ML leader by 50 points has coleman, so not sure whether to bring him in now

    mannone
    distin mert olson (chester burner)
    hazard* wally nasri januzaj* (silva)
    rooney* suarez lukaku

    * = players who may not start next gw

My starting 11 is strong but given that they may not start coupled with a negligble bench, shd i do a transfer just to increase bench strength? have 1FT and 0.0m itb

    A: silva >>> xxx upto 9.3m
    B: januzaj >> xxx upto 4.9m (ki/ravel/mutch)
C: save FT and hope my 11 starts
D: burner >> ward but i needed burner to start next gw as olson/chester have a tough fix in gw21
    E: burner + silva >> johnson/baines + nolan/sterling (-4)

Alrighty, eyeing general options that will allow to get Aguero back once fit, whenever that is, and precluding prohibitive price rises. [ ] indicate transfer required. General strategy for the season is to play a big back line and rotate mids... so far it's been paying off well.

      Szczesny [ - > Marshall] / Mannone
      Caulker [ - > Bardsley] / Coleman / Mert / Terry [ -> Kompany] / Jags [ -> Evans]
      Mutch / Januzaj / Hazard / Wally / Sterling
      Rooney / Lukaku [ -> Aguero] / Suarez

I've got a feeling all the early WC'ers are going to have pretty much the same team, about7 or 8 of the same players, and then the template will change again by the end of the month with the new signings, possible injuries etc...
