The Community Round Up

The short supply of Fantasy Football mavericks and the dangers of daring to be different were among key issues being discussed by the community this week. Elsewhere in our round-up, we assess how the throngs reacted to the Manchester derby blank, and Juan Mata’s move to Old Trafford.

There’s also time to find out the origins behind some of the community’s notable usernames and catch up on the latest from our community leagues, where a certain member of the Fantasy Football Scout team continues to cast aside all but one very “special” Fantasy manager.

The Hottest Topics

Just what has become of all the flair Fantasy managers? This was among key questions posed in our hot topic on the apparently increasingly endangered species of Fantasy Football mavericks Some believe that the ever-reliable Suarez captaincy and the stat-breaking phenomena that is Yaya Toure are to blame for the death of the risk-taking Fantasy boss. Others wondered if the so-called “flair managers” have just lost their mojo. McKanata was among those who took part in the discussion and put forward the theory that, with more data at their disposal during the second half of the season, maverick managers may have more confidence to roll the dice with their selections. Time will tell.

Perhaps the decline of the flair manager is down to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game discouraging risk-taking? We asked how the FPL game could be improved to boost maverick management and reward those who look beyond the “template”. Among the options considered, by Anti Top Four and TokyoRed, was the idea of scrapping the winter Wildcard. While TorresMagic favours a sliding scale of points based on ownership of players, with differentials carrying greater weight for the goals and assists they rack up. The FPL propeller heads would surely combust at such a prospect.

On a similar theme, Koflok believes consistently performing bandwagons are making this season easier for the so-called “casual managers” to match the more focused and “hands-on” Fantasy bosses. In previous seasons, the likes of Aaron Ramsey were unable to score double figures week after week and would have been dismissed by savvy managers as a mere bandwagon. This season, though, such players have sustained their form and repaid those who jumped on board early – either through the lure of a bandwagon or their skillful judgment.

The Casual’s post highlights the dangers of missing out on this season’s consistent performers and focusing too much on differentials. Inspired by Mark’s recent Scoutcast revelation that he plans to focus his Wildcard selection on form midfield differentials, The Casual urges caution. He tracks his own scores against Mark’s from Gameweek 8 to show the eye-popping ranking and transfer value gulf between the “smart casual” and those who dare to be different. Looking at his analysis it’s no wonder that the risk-takers have had a re-think this term.

Manchester City’s somewhat inevitable progress to the Capital One Cup final means their Manchester derby in Gameweek 28 will be rescheduled. This is set to leave Fantasy managers with a tough choice: do they bench expensive players like Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure, or do they dare to move them on? Caine & Co is among those who answered our Hot Topic, claiming he was happy to ditch all his Manchester assets, aside from the frighteningly potent Aguero. Greenwindmill announced that he is likely to continue to shun United’s players and bench his City pack.

Juan Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford could shake up a few plans, however. The Red Devils new playmaker supreme prompted a popular discussion with Neotheny among those more than happy to add Mata to his roster, regardless of the Gameweek 28 blank.

Mata was not the only new name brought in from the cold this week. Your Mum’s Athletic has been looking at some further last-minute punts likely to interest the hordes of late Wildcarders. Sunderland’s on-loan forward Fabio Borini and Crystal Palace’s Marouane Chamakh are among his rather surprising left-field choices.

Finally, Give The Todd Some Love decided to take the opportunity offered by this week’s Premier League break to delve into the origins of some of our posters’ usernames. While his will be obvious to fans of US sitcom Scrubs, Colonel Shoe’s was less transparent and has its routes in two childhood nicknames melded together. Meanwhile, Syd’s love of Pink Floyd is the inspiration behind his moniker. There’s plenty of ideas and food for thought for those watching in and perhaps looking to announce themselves in the coming weeks.

The Community Leagues

Teltzham Hotspurs continues to lead HeelsOverHead’s “Worst To First 2Million + Club”, for teams who suffered an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks. He improved his overall FPL rank to 23,398. Five teams are now within the top 100,000 and chasing his crown.

Grumpy Camel tops Torres Magic’s “Last Man Standing” league, which now stands at 226 strong as 21 were booted out after Gameweek 22. Goal_Machine leads TM’s “After Xmas” League, while Bosh sits atop the Millionaire Club. Unbelievable Bentek-kers, at 84th overall, leads the seedings for his FPL Open and Elite 64 contests. All his league details can be found here.

Evs continues to blaze a trail in the FFS Old Farts Club – a tournament to cater for our more senior posters. The Welshman has also reclaimed top spot in our FFS Moderators and Contributors league from Atheltico Timbo. As if these two league leads were not enough, Evs is also one of six leaders in In Tommy We Trust’s “All Things FPL” league, alongside Billy Ketsu, Jambo 17, Koneheads and Bootsy and Athletico Timbo. But there is hope for his competitors as Evs has lost his Puffin Boy Memorial Cup league lead to Don The Special One: Don really is the special one, having usurped our Hall of Fame leader.

In the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, there is no change, with that Jonty chap retaining the lead in the FPL component of the competition, while Gigging Order continues to top the Sky Sports game, while FFS moderator, In Like Flynn, has cemented his lead in the Metro league.

I'm trying to work out the most likely scenario for Cabaye. It seems that he's wanted by both PSG and Man Utd and that both are making bids, which means that it'll probably drag out to the end of the transfer window. If he is at Man Utd, he'll probably get plenty of minutes (perhaps to the detriment of Januzaj) and will be almost essential. If he stays at Newcastle, then I'll probably swap him for Eriksen or Ramsey.

My sense of chances for where he ends up are:
    Man Utd -- 50%
    PSG -- 30%
    Newcastle -- 10%
    Arsenal -- 5%
Another big club outside the Premier League-- 5%

Any improvements on that or better info?

he will be less essential at united, will rarely play in his favoured number 10 position. he won't have tiote and anita mopping up for him either allowing him to get forward. will just be him and carrick in central mid

I agree that he'll be less forward at United than at Newcastle, though I'm hoping that with Mata, RVP and Rooney in form and good health, Man Utd should score a lot more goals than Newcastle and that Cabaye will get involved. The formation will be interesting too. RVP as no. 9; Rooney as no. 10; Mata as a left or right winger cutting in; Carrick distributing from the back of midfield. All of which would allow for another central midfielder who makes occasional attacking runs in the manner of Lampard.

Forgive my ignorance as I'm not on top of all this transfer window stuff, but when does it end? I thought it was at the end of January - if that's so, are you saying there's a 90% chance that Cabaye won't be at Newcastle in a few more days? I thought the latest was that he'd be there for the season?

I might not be up on the very latest news. He's in my team now and I'm on a wildcard, so am trying to decide if it's better to get rid of him rather than being forced into a transfer in a week or two if he leaves for PSG. The way it looked to me is that PSG made a paltry offer and are reconsidering, and then Manchester Utd made a decent offer but still not 25 million, and both will probably come back one or two more times. It's got the feeling of a likely successful bid to me, but I might be wrong!

... and to answer the question, the transfer window: 'ends on the 31 January if a working day, and again, if not, on the first working day thereafter, at a time determined by the Board.' So it ends on Friday.

      - united are rumoured to be interested in every midfielder in europe, no official word linking them with cabaye
      - if he does go to united, he will play in a deeper role with less set pieces
      - he will not damage januzaj's minutes, completely different positions
      - i would say 50% PSG, 10 % united 40% newcastle

Doubts are Lucas (red), Parr and Coleman (yellow), and rotation threats are Kolarov, Navas.

Please criticise my WC team! I've been constantly changing it for the last few days and I've ended up with this:

    Boruc - McGregor
    Coleman - Olsson - Vlaar - Ward - Bruce
    Yaya - Mata - Cabaye - Johnson - Noone
    Suarez - Aguero - Adebayor

I'd love to get Hazard, but can't really see that happening, unless I swap him for Yaya (what do you think?). Also thinking about getting Oscar for Chelsea cover instead of Cabaye if I don't get Hazard, but that would leave me with 4.8 for a Johnson replacement.

Thoughts? Any input will be much appreciated!

Would appreciate advice, trying to save free transfer for the weekend, two GWs in a week causes problems.

Doubts are Lucas (red), Parr and Coleman (yellow), and rotation threats are Kolarov, Navas.

Is the threat of 5 non scorers too dangerous, or save FT? Rest of team is Boruc, Mannone, Mollson, Fonte, Oz, Llal, Hend, GAS

Been thinking a lot about this Mata move.

I hope it leads to a change in formation, I really do. Part of the problem has been that, with our wingers being out of form/crap much of the creative burden has fallen onto Carrick, and this really doesn't suit him. Also, he's not a tackler, he's good at reading the game and breaking up play using interceptions. When Carrick is fit I hope we go something like

    Carrick, Fletcher/Fellaini

    Janu, Rooney, Mata
    RvP

so an attacking trio behind RvP. Fletcher or Fellaini, or even Jones can be the shield in front of the back 4, that Carrick can't be. Meanwhile, with those 3 in front of him Carrick doesn't need to worry about creating things, he can do what he's good at, linking defence and attack, recieving the ball from the cbs/dm and getting it to the creative players and if needs be recycling possession to keep the ball so we can try again. We haven't seen a lot of Carrick in this role, but it's where i see him as being best suited

Yeah, when the front four are fit, it gives United four players who will take responsibility.

All to often, it has just been Januzaj willing to get hold of the ball in recent weeks.

it was more than that though, It's like we've been relying on Carrick to make something happen, as the midfield was too static so there was nothing there. as a link man between defence and attack Carrick can exert more influence as

        a) it's more natural to him
        b) the burden on him is lessened

yeah, that's what I mean. Januzaj was the only one willing to come and get the ball to make something happen.

Makes sense except I really think Januzaj will get much lesser gametime when all fit. Moyes prefers Valencia over Januzaj for some weird reason anyways.

but I don't see Valencia as a AMC to be honest, which is sort of what I was going for, but you may be right, Moyes does seem to like Valencia, which is odd, given we have a cross failure rate of 82%, and given how little Nani and Young have played, most of that has to be attributable to Valencia

I'd prefer Valencia right full over Rafael. I wouldn't have my heart in my mouth everytime he has to make a tackle.

Agreed, especially on the Carrick parts - wildly overrated last season, cannot protect back 4 well at all. Very good at his strengths, which would be fully used in this system

I thought this article was pretty interesting on that question: http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/jan/21/juan-mata-manchester-united-chelsea.

And I think it's time for Manchester to move away from a winger-based system. It's falling out of favour at the big clubs in Europe, with wingers who cut in and short passing now the fashion, including at Barcelona and Bayern. I think that front six looks very impressive on paper, so long as Fellaini can recover his form. I think that another really top, athletic defensive midfielder like Dante would be an improvement too. Maybe Jones can grow more into that role.

Messing around with a possible RVP team and I don't like it better than my current team but perhaps I could get some feedback?

    Boruc (Davis)
    Kosc Azpi Kolarov (Brayford Bruce)
    Hazard Januzaj Eriksen Silva (Oviedo)
    RVP Suarez Aguero
    0.0 itb

That compared with my current team:
    Mannone (Boruc)
    Kolarov Kosc Azpi (Chiriches Chester)
    Hazard Lallana Eriksen Silva (Pozuelo)
    Bony Suarez Aguero

Does anyone fancy Zaha as a great prospect at Cardiff for £5.4? If he settles, he could be a great replacement for Januzaj (if his playing time diminishes after Man Utd's transfers).

The bloke didn't have a great scoring record in the Championship with a top club, I'm not sure how him playing for Cardiff makes that better.

      I hope I'm proved wrong however 🙂

So, Aguero is an essential, right?

I have Negredo and Lukaku, but can ditch the pair of them for Aguero and one of; Shane Long, Weimann at Villa or maybe Berahino.

Is it worth downgrading my 3rd striker to get in Aguero. I'm sat in 3rd in my league and the leader has the combination of Saurez, Aguero and Giroud.

    Thoughts...
