Scout Scribbles – Hazard Set for Belgium Bench Role

Eden Hazard is set for a sub role in Belgium’s friendly with Ivory Coast. Robin van Persie misses training for Holland due to illness. Palace pair Marouane Chamakh and Joe Ledley both withdraw from international duty. Phil Jagielka is close to returning for Everton, Denmark are unlikely to risk Christian Eriksen for tonight’s Wembley encounter, whilst Alan Pardew praises Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s weekend performance:

Belgium Boss to Spare Hazard’s Game Time

With a crucial home clash against Tottenham on Saturday, the Chelsea winger looks set to be used sparingly for Belgium’s friendly with Ivory Coast this evening. Speaking to the press, national boss Marc Wilmots discussed his intentions for the Blues wide man:

“I am aware of the situation with regards to Eden’s overall fitness, and it could become an issue for the World Cup, if Chelsea go all the way in the Champions’ League. The final comes after the end of the Premier League campaign and would leave him less recovery time for Brazil. Those sort of factors could affect his ability to produce his best at the World Cup, but that is something to consider nearer the time. For now, I am happy to accept that we don’t need him to be starting this game. I am happy with the group of players at my disposal, and Eden will be on the bench. I won’t use him for more than 20 minutes.”

The Scout Says: The news will delight Hazard’s Fantasy owners in a week where many of our limited midfield options are struggling to make the weekend’s action. Current leader of this week’s Captain Poll, Hazard has already racked up five sets of double figures at the Bridge this term and, with a win set to take his side seven points clear of their nearest challengers, a midweek rest could prove critical ahead of the vital showdown with Tim Sherwood’s team.

Van Persie Illness Worry for Dutch

Reports suggest the United forward is struggling to be fit in time for Holland’s friendly with France this evening after sitting out training due to illness.

The Scout Says: Fantasy managers will be eagerly anticipating this evening’s line-up for any indication of van Persie’s availability ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Brom. With many sides missing out this weekend due to FA Cup scheduling, van Persie’s appeal is on the rise – over 12,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already drafted him for the Hawthorns showdown and, with a goal in four of his five appearances since returning from injury, he sits second in this week’s Captain Poll so far. A potential absence would surely boost Wayne Rooney’s stock and could see the England international moved into the advanced forward position, with David Moyes perhaps affording Juan Mata the role in “the hole” should van Persie fail to recover in time for Saturday’s Midlands encounter.

Injuries Increase for Palace

Ahead of Saturday’s home game against Southampton, Tony Pulis is sweating on the fitness of Marouane Chamakh and Joe Ledley after both withdrew from international duty yesterday. Chamakh was forced out of the Morocco squad with a hamstring strain, whilst Ledley pulled out of Wales’ clash with Iceland due to a hip problem.

The Scout Says: Handed a role in central midfield against Swansea last Sunday, Ledley played from start to finish in the 1-1 draw, though Chamakh lasted just 31 minutes before being replaced by Glenn Murray as the Eagles’ lone forward. Murray had partnered Chamakh in a 4-4-2 in the previous Gameweek but was only fit enough for the bench last week after picking up a knock in training – having climbed off the bench to notch the equaliser, he is expected to return to the starting XI for the Saints showdown. Tom Ince’s owners will be hoping a possible absence for Chamakh could allow the midfielder a central berth again – he grabbed a goal and assist from the role in “the hole” on his debut but has failed to produce the returns since shifting to the right flank in the last couple of matches.

Mixed Injury News for Martinez

The Everton manager confirmed on-loan forward Lacina Traore will remain at the club as he looks to recover from a hamstring problem that could keep him out for up to two months. Martinez also revealed Phil Jagielka could be back in time for this weekend’s FA Cup encounter with Arsenal as he steps up his comeback from a similar complaint:

“With Lacina, we’ve seen the specialists and we’re now ready to proceed with what’s going to be the best treatment for Lacina, and it’s not going to be surgery. It’s fantastic news that he doesn’t need to go down that route, as that means he’s going to be available for the end of the season. We’re expecting between six and eight weeks to be the period he needs to be recovering, but we’re all very positive…With Phil, you can never rule him out. From a medical point of view, he should be missing the game against Arsenal – I was probably looking more at the Cardiff game. But knowing him and how he’s reacted to this similar injury that he’s had in the past, he could heal a lot quicker. I’m not going to rule him out and we’re going to give him as much time as he needs to make a final decision.”

The Scout Says: The Traore news will no doubt delight owners of Romelu Lukaku ahead of the Merseysiders’ superb run of fixtures. Having recovered from an ankle injury, the big Belgian was fit enough only for the bench last weekend after picking up a chest infection but need little time to make an impact as a second-half substitute by bagging the winner against West Ham. With less competition for the lone forward starting role, Lukaku looks a secure attacking option for the Toffees at a time when Martinez dropped Kevin Mirallas to the bench last weekend – with Cardiff, Fulham and Sunderland and a double Gameweek 31 (SWA, new) in the next six, he’s bound to earn extra investment as a third forward option. Jagielka’s likely return in time for the Gameweek 30 clash with Cardiff also bodes well for the Toffees’ chances of defensive points. Martinez’ men chalked up their first clean sheet in six attempts last weekend and will be optimistic of further shut-outs, given that kind run of opponents.

Pardew Praise for Yanga-Mbiwa

The Newcastle manager discussed his decision to opt for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa over Steven Taylor in the heart of his defence last week after Fabricio Coloccini was afforded time off due to a family bereavement:

“I took Mapou over Steven because I think Steven is a little bit uncomfortable on the left. He prefers Willo’s (Mike Williamson’s) channel. So I made the decision after the Spurs game that – Mapou and Colo on the left side, and Willo and Tayls will contest the right side. I couldn’t have asked for any more from Mapou. He was terrific. It’s given an opportunity to Mapou, which he’s taken. I’ll take that into consideration when I pick my next team, obviously.”

The Scout Says: The frank assessment lets us know that Taylor and Yanga-Mbiwa are essentially second-choice options, providing the Magpies boss has a full quota of defenders at his disposal. Given that Williamson has started every match since Gameweek 8, Taylor’s chances of game time look remote now – the former has recently dropped in price to 4.3 in FPL but has some decent short-term fixtures to follow. The Tyneside team have this weekend off, but if Coloccini returns, their clean sheet prospects look a little more enticing ahead of a trip to Fulham and double Gameweek 31, which hands Pardew’s side back-to-back home games against Palace and Everton.

Danes Unlikely to Risk Eriksen

Ruled out of Tottenham’s home win over Cardiff with a back problem last weekend , Christian Eriksen has joined up with the Denmark squad ahead of tonight’s friendly against England. National manager Morten Olsen has assured Tim Sherwood he won’t take any chances with the midfielder’s fitness for the Wembley showdown:

“If Eriksen could play we will use him, but he would have to be 100 per cent. When he is only 99 per cent he will not play. He’s a young player who has never had such an injury before, so it’s a difficult one to call. We have to wait and see, I think it’s always a game against time, probably he can play on Saturday for Tottenham. We will try tomorrow, but surely I know also the club manager, they have some difficult games coming up, in Europe. They can be sure that our medics are very good, our physios and the back specialist and so on. But Tottenham can be sure that if he’s any less than 100 per cent I will not use him.”

The Scout Says: Despite producing three goals and three assists in Sherwood’s first eight league games, Eriksen was dropped to the bench for the Gameweek 26 clash against Newcastle and has failed to feature domestically since. After grabbing a goal and assist in last week’s Europa League win over FC Dnipro, however, Eriksen’s display looked likely to secure a starting role against the Bluebirds before injury struck. The Dane’s loyal 4% of FPL owners have retained his services in recent weeks despite a price drop from 7.4 to 6.9, but if he’s ruled out of the weekend trip to Chelsea, subsequent games against Arsenal, Southampton and Liverpool are likely to see many more part company as we look to take advantage of double Gameweek 31.

    I give up on all these dgw conundrums.

    I think my actual issue is owning RVP at the moment, as it gives me a reluctance to sell for the double.

      I think if you have him keep him for the double, that's been my own thought on owning Mata. I can't justify spending a transfer getting rid.

      You reckon selling a DGW player (for another DGW) player is madness Evs?

        I have the same problem with Caz. Don't really want to keep him and the Arsenal DGW has thrown my plans. I might get rid of him for Adam Johnson for GW31 which frees up cash to bring in Aguero.

        At the moment, I'm thinking RVP, Suarez and Lukaka.

        But I can't stand the thought of not going with Aguero, especially v Fulham.

        Now, that means selling RVP, or maybe Haz to free up funds.

      It's annoying though because the transfers page will only let you make 4 transfers this week so you can't start tinkering with the full team in preparation for next week's wildcard. We'll have to wait until Saturday to start tinkering.

            I'm in too - I enjoy the level of planning you can undertake and potentially be rewarded for, although I'm sure I'll be cursing it within weeks of it starting for real. Suspect the calibre of the average player will be higher than the main game given there's an entry fee though so bracing myself for a mid-table struggle at best.

      To everyone considering Lukaku, Having owned him for a large part of the season my opinion is that he's not worth getting now, he only had 1 goal in his last 10 games, along with 5 assists. He ended up playing the Giroud role in that he was more likely to make the players around him score rather than get on to the end of chances himself. If you are forgoing Aguero and your choice is between Remy and Lukaku I'd say go Remy, he's more of an out and out goalscorer

        Many have forgotten this.

        He is a great impact player from the bench, but he doesn't seem to score a lot of goals when playing 90 mins.

        I remember reading comments from Martinez from earlier in the season saying how Lukaku will have to get used to producing the same intensity over a longer period. I'm not sure he's there yet

      Adam Johnson - worth bringing in?

      Sunderland definitely plays more matches than many others, but they are not pushovers -
      CPL [nor liv] WHU tot EVE che CAR mun SWA + mci WBA undecided.
      They play all but one (ars) of the top 7 teams, remaining 6 are easier though.

      But compare it to Sterling for example - mun car SUN TOT whu MCI nor CHE cpl NEW - plays for a better team and 6 easy games, and 0.8m cheaper, lets you upgrade Kolarov to Zabaleta.

          AJ is the main man at Sunderland, Sterling is feeding of SAS scraps at LFC. AJ also has a very decent share of set-pieces in his locker.

          I'm not saying it's a no-brainer, but to me AJ seems a better option with the two unscheduled DGWs.

            OK, I'll bite. I've been chopping up my plans and making sacrifices so I can have Zabaleta instead of Kolarov because the gametime issues bother me.

            But I'm a stupid, stupid man and so I would dearly love another chance for Kolarov to put me over his knee and give me another stern lesson in the basics of FF.

            Convince me.

              See you HAVE to keep Kolarov Roscy. It's how the Kolarov game works. For example I've had him since gw22. Some will have sold after a couple 1 pointers and in their case he was a useless buy. I've gotten over 4ppg from him, which is acceptable but he's been unlucky not to get at least another goal and assist in that time. He's got 3 dgw's coming now for him that's 3 weeks where you're guaranteed one start and probably a cameo in the other. Two if your lucky. He is the most attacking defender in the game bar none. One of the only ones that is capable of the holy trinity, a goal, assist and cs in one match.

                I also had Kolarov from GW22 right through GW28. Got 14 points - 0, 1, 1, 1, 11 [he blanked in GW26]

                Instead look at Zabaleta - 1, 1, 2, 8, 6

                More gametime doesn't necessarily means more points, but Zab has enough attacking threat.

                  This is also important to consider. Zab has attacking threat of his own and has also been unlucky not to score more goals this season. He loves bombing forward into the box!

                You make a good argument, but he HAS to get those attacking returns to make it worthwhile, since you can't even rely on CSs due to him often getting less than 60 mins when he starts

                  He has only once been subbed off before 60 and that was gw7. If he starts he nearly always plays 90. Since I got him in gw23 he's scored 3 more points than the more expensive Zabaletta and as I said he very nearly had another goal and assist that I saw

                    Not having him at all is a fine strategy, he's not essential (only because of gametime) but the way to play if you want him is put him in and never sell, never bench. He is so good going forward it's like we used to say of Baines you essentially have another midfielder that gets 4 points for a cs

              Not that he looked poor... He was decent, creating chances, moving ahead... but choosing him is not as easy as it might seem.

              I was going to draft him in - staright, no second thoughts - but the ppg of Sterling and his stats swayed me... Moreover, if I get Sterling, I can afford Zabaleta over Kolarov - and secure some gametime.

                I literally haven't got a clue what I'm doing for this double. I think I may just go mad and take loads of hits in GW31. Lallana -> Nolan? Snodgrass -> Sterling?. Yeah you know it sounds good for a -8 😎

                  I'm completely knackered just thinking about it. I don't even know what to do this GW. At the moment I was thinking RVP, Mirallas and Snodgrass -> Aguero, Yaya and AJ/Sterling for GW30 and 31. I can make that without any hits.

                      AJ is my first choice since he's got so many games from now and until the end of the season. I might not be able to afford any more than Sterling though. Nolan is slightly tempting, but LFC are scoring for fun at the moment, I'd be happy to triple up.

                      I've got 10, no GK (Mannone/Adrian). Saving FT instead of ditching either one of them, they rotate so well.

                For a tiny time around the Aguero injury, it was kind of a differential and cool... then reality kicked in and I watched a Man United game.

                I can see Januzaj starting one of the two, probably against West Ham. Personally I'd prefer Haz for 90 mins vs Januzaj for 120 - regardless of opposition....

          Ok draft 2.1a gw31 team. (No Aguero :shock:)

          It takes me 1 hit to get here, and field 11 this week...

          Boruc
          Coleman, Chester, Vidic
          Haz, Yaya, AJ, Mata
          RVP, Suarez, Lukakakaaaa

          Bench. Davis, No one, Burner, Ward.

          I appreciate 3 united players, but I could soon off load RVP for Kun.

          United and Everton do have nice fixs in and around the double

            Nice fixtures or not, I'd still be worried owning 3 United players with their current form. Could work out well for you, though.

            I'm tempted by Lukaku over Kun myself, will re-assess this after the weekend. If Kun goes bananas, I'll have to jump aboard...

            Not sure on Vidic or Mata as United's defence has been poor and they will definitely concede against City, and Mata out wide has been quite a slow trickle of points, I think Nolan and Sterling would both outscore Mata that week.

            Also, no Kun is always a risk but Lukaku is the next best bet

            I don't see the fascination with Vidic. I'd save my FT this GW and keep Kos I reckon, you'll field 11 this GW but you won't have to eat a hit for your GW31 team. Other than that I think it looks great.

          So my decision whether to use my FT transfer this week rests of whether Mirallas or AJ is better for gw31. Any thoughts on which is better?

          As I see it, neither is likely to get the full 180 mins, AJ probably to get more minutes. If Mirallas starts one and come off the bench in the other (which I think is likely) is he still roughly an equal prospect given the fixtures?

              I've made dozen variations about my gw31 team and always end up in -8, so might as well do it for gw30 then (and see how everything collapses just before bid dgw...).

          Lots of Lukaku love going on around here. Will guarantee you some jammy assists but surely Remy is a better option given that he plays as an out and out striker, is on pens and isnt just coming back from an injury!

          How does this plan for the DGW sound for you?

          Transfers for gw 30:

          Sturridge->Aguero
          Mata->A.Johnson

          Transfers for gw 31:
          Lallana->Gerrard
          Fonte->Distin
          JayRod->Remy/Lukaku

          This would give me a team with 9 dgw players. Current team is linked.

            Didn't look at your team but I think Mata and Sturridge have a good chance of beating or get close to the scores of AJ and Aguero in gw30 and 31, can't do some other transfer to get 10 or 11 dgw`?
