Scout Scribbles – International Round-Up

Daniel Sturridge fires England to victory over Denmark, with Adam Lallana supplying the assist. Robin van Persie shrugs off illness worries to play 90 minutes for Holland, with a trio of United midfielders all impressing on international duty. Brede Hangeland recovers from a weekend head knock to turn out for Norway, whilst Chelsea duo Oscar and Mohamed Salah are in the goals as Belgium take it easy on Eden Hazard:

Sturridge the Three Lions Hero

The Liverpool forward continued his outstanding season by notching England’s Wembley winner over Denmark. Whilst team-mate Luis Suarez drew a blank in Uruguay’s 1-1 draw against Austria, Sturridge – who started on the flank before moving to a central role after Wayne Rooney was replaced – grabbed the only goal for Roy Hodgson’s side, courtesy of an Adam Lallana assist.

The Scout Says: It’s 22 goals in 26 games for club and country in all competitions for Sturridge now after yet another impressive showing. With Liverpool set for the weekend off, both he and Suarez have been sold by almost 30,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, though last night’s strike will again serve a reminder of his capabilities as the Reds edge towards the kindest double Gameweek 31 of any side, with a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Sunderland bound to attract huge investment in Brendan Rodgers’ team. Lallana’s ownership continues to grow this week as Southampton ready themselves for a trip to Selhurst Park. The Southampton skipper now sits in 35% of FPL sides – the sixth most popular player in the game – and with last night’s assist maintaining the form that has harvested a goal or assist in eight of his last 12 league appearances, many face a tough decision in Gameweek 31. Mauricio Pochettino’s side face a single fixture that week – a testing trip to Tottenham – but with Newcastle, Cardiff and Villa in the subsequent four fixtures, Lallana’s consistency is likely to persuade plenty to hold or bench.

Van Persie Fitness Amongst Positives for Moyes

The Dutchman was rated a doubt for last night’s friendly against France but recovered in time to play the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 defeat in Paris. David Moyes was afforded further reason for optimism ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Brom as a trio of midfielders all turned in impressive performances. Shinji Kagawa grabbed a goal and assist in Japan’s 4-2 win over New Zealand, Antonio Valencia provided a pair of assists in Ecuador’s 4-3 triumph over Australia, whilst Marouane Fellaini notched as Belgium drew 2-2 with Ivory Coast.

The Scout Says: The van Persie news will delight his owners and would-be suitors ahead of The Hawthorns clash. One of the few legitimate captaincy contenders this coming weekend, the Dutchman has notched four times in the last five Gameweeks and will fancy his chances against a backline yet to register a clean sheet under Pepe Mel. It remains to be seen whether Kagawa and Valencia’s displays will have any effect on David Moyes’ thinking, though. With Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj both without a midweek match, the United boss may go for fresher legs bearing in mind the weekend showdown is an early lunchtime kick-off – certainly, Mata is a guaranteed starter, leaving the rest to battle it out for the remaining starting berth on the flank.

Hangeland and Mitroglou Boost for Cottagers

Forced off against Chelsea after suffering a head knock last weekend, the centre-half returned to action in Norway’s 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic. Fulham boss Felix Magath will be delighted to hear Hangeland not only proved his fitness, but lasted the full 90 minutes and also supplied an assist. Mitroglou, who has yet to start in the league since arriving in January, stepped up his fitness levels by turning out for 60 minutes in Greece’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of South Korea.

The Scout Says: Dropped for Rene Meulensteen’s final two matches in charge, Hangeland was immediately reinstalled to the heart of the Fulham back-four upon Magath’s arrival. After helping his side to a 1-1 draw at West Brom in Gameweek 27, Hangeland lasted less than 15 minutes last weekend before a clash of heads with Kieran Richardson forced him off, with Magath stating post match that his skipper’s absence was a key factor in the 3-1 loss. Mitroglou’s only start for the London club has come courtesy of a run out for the reserves, with Magath citing a lack of match fitness as the reason behind his absence. Last night’s return to action for both players bodes well for the Cottagers’ chances ahead of a vital trip to Cardiff this Saturday lunchtime as the bottom two go head-to-head in Wales.

Blues Midfield Duo in the Goals

In a night where Eden Hazard was afforded just 28 minutes for Belgium after replacing Everton’s Kevin Mirallas off the bench, a couple of Jose Mourinho’s attacking midfielders were amongst the goals for their respective countries. Mohamed Salah notched Egypt’s second in a 2-0 win over Bosnia, whilst Oscar also found himself on the scoresheet for Brazil before being replaced by team-mate Ramires at half-time. Willian was also afforded 45 minutes by the South Americans in a 5-0 cruise over South Africa.

Hazard played down any fears of an ankle problem after he was hacked down upon his introduction to the action:

“It hurt, but I think I can play this weekend. After 20 seconds I got a kick. A nice welcome, but I’m not worried about the injury.”

The Scout Says: Hazard’s Fantasy owners will no doubt be delighted with the winger’s limited game time ahead of Saturday evening’s crucial home clash with Tottenham, whilst the fact he played the rest of the match without any problems looks assuring. In spite of his endeavours, Salah is likely to be handed a bench role at best this coming weekend as the Chelsea boss continues to ease him into the first-team picture, whilst Oscar’s strike offers optimism for his 11% of FPL owners ahead of the weekend encounter. Bearing in mind Andre Schurrle notched three times last weekend, though, the German – snapped up by over 17,000 managers this week – could well retain his place on the flank, leaving Oscar (with one goal since Gameweek 12) and Willian (one strike since Gameweek 7) to battle it out for the role in “the hole” behind a lone forward.

Has to be him or Evra imo, though Vidic could throw a spanner in the works, if his concentration goes now he's officially on his way in the Summer.

I can get a cracking GW31 team with only 1 hit. There is still a possibility there might not be a DGW in 31. Even at that just a Hull v Sunderland draw wrecks everyones GW31 plans, might as well play with the certainties

Ya that's true but they aren't bound to it. they can still play them I believe (or do what they did to Hull and play them on the monday).

I was laughed at earlier in the season for saying Arsenal would finish outside the top 4 when they were top of the league.

Now they'll probably finish in the top 4, I thought Man U would improve and finish above them but that's not happened. Spurs steadily picking up points under Sherwood (bar the Norwich blip), going a bit under the radar.

I think, given that they have Spurs, Chelsea, City and Everton coming up they could certainly drop out for a while at least. They need to take the 3 points from Spurs to give them some breathing space (can't see them taking anything from Chelsea or City).

I think it will be a 3 way battle for 4th yet. Can see arsenal picking up 5-7 points between now and gw 33 only. Spurs will be close, and perhaps United if they pick up form.

Didn't manage to catch the England game last night, but since it's quiet thought I'd post my prediction for the 23 England will take to Brazil (barring injury, and there will be at least 1!)

    Hart Forster Foster
Walker Johnson Cahill Jagielka Smalling Jones Baines Cole
    Gerrard Wilshere Henderson Lampard Milner
    Sterling Lallana Townsend
    Sturridge Rooney Welbeck Lambert

Any thoughts? People disagree? Bare in mind this is not who I'd like to see, but who I think will be taken.

Ox was the 24th man, he'll probs make it due to injuries.

Townsend's qualifying performances should see him onto the plane I would have thought.

Don't think J-Rod's done enough in an England shirt to merit a place.

I just think Lambert won't get a game up front ahead of the other 3, and Jrod can play across the entire front line. Equally, Ox is better than Sterling and Townsend on the wing and he can also play in the centre.
I remember Roy talking about having players who can play multiple positions in the last tourney.

Yep, originally I had Ox in for Lambert, but they always pick more strikers than they need in these squads, probably because it gives them more attacking options off the bench.

Lambert gives us something else as a Plan B, if Carroll scores a few I could even see him getting the place.

I'm a Sterling fan, but agree Ox has been better than Townsend recently.

It's him or Cole, I can see Roy taking Cole as a bit of extra experience, if Baines was to get injured, not sure I'd want Shaw starting in a knockout WC game yet, he's a bit raw.

I don't think Lampard will be on the plane. Carrick maybe
        Ox over Townsend.
        Shaw over Cole
Is Fraser Forster ahead of Ruddy?

Fairly sure Forster will be ahead of Ruddy, he played in that friendly earlier in the season.

Lampard v Carrick for one space, don't think both will go, think Lamps will get the nod.

Ox v Townsend is a tough one, see above.

I think one big centre forward will go, might be Carroll if he proves his fitness/scores a few.

Current draft GW31 team, wanted it to be fairly balanced with a couple of differentials:

      (Mannone) Adrián
      Williamson Ivanovic Koscielny (Turner Ward)
      Nolan Yaya Huddlestone Hazard (Ki)
      Sturridge Agüero Suarez (C)

      One question:
Huddlestone, Williamson, Ki -> Sterling, Chester, 4.1 mid

When they rescheduled the league games they didn't specify that they are subject to change, so I'm assuming they are set in stone now

Just makes the whole thing more blurry... replays would make WC a lot more valuable at least! If City draw I have no idea how they're going to play all their matches, but I'm guessing they'll have to be played during European TV times...

        My team for this week:

        Marshall (FUL H)
Azpilicueta (TOT H), Olsson DOUBTFUL (STK H), Ward (SOU H),
Ince (SOU H), Mata (VC) (WBA A), Hazard (C) (TOT H), Lallana (CRY A)
        Adebayor (CHE H), Suarez & Sturridge -

BENCH: Boruc (CRY A), Coleman -, Collins -, Mirallas -

Already wasted my transfer (Ward for Gabbidon). Does it make sense for me to make another to make it 10 (for Sturridge)?

I quell my own post. I can't see any of the DGW games being cancelled now. FA/Premier league will have consulted about possibilty of draws and no way would have announced reschulding, if they might be cancelled again within a week.

I will get Aguero for Adebayor next week to have SAS+Aguero upfront. Nothing changes my mind. The only problem is I don't have much money now, I thought removing Yaya would have it done but it didn't, so I'll need to remove some players. Current team - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/6913449 . Here are the options:

        A) REMOVE Mirallas or Lallana. Mirallas may seem the pick to take out but he has a DGW, doesn't make sense here. Lallana is consistent but doesn't have a DGW. If I remove them, I'll take Sterling (though he is on the borderline for me right now, one 0.1 rise away from being out of my reach.

        B) Remov Ince and another defender (probably Olsson) and put in a 4.6 MF and a defender under 4.0 MF.

        C) Abandon my 5 week planned Aguero transfer. Keep Adebayor, and use the money to take back Yaya for Mata or take Rooney over Kun Aguero.

Which option should I choose? Any help? 😛

Aguero is definitely worth having at some point but GW30 could be too early, what with CL rotation and City's fixtures. The trouble is that his price will rocket, however well he performs. And Ade probably needs to leave.

I would go for A). Lallana is a better long term option than Mirallas and Mirallas might be out of favour anyway. See whether Mirallas starts against Arsenal on Sunday. If he doesn't then he is definitely out of favour and isn't really a DGW player. If he does start then he is still a rotation risk, but could be worth a gamble for DGW.

I have experienced this before in the season that three-hard-hitters (Rooney, Suarez, Aguero before) along with 2 MF performers (Ramsey, Yaya) lead to a perfect team and atleast one will be a major differential there, who will get you points but not to your opponents (Rooney, I remember Aguero got 1 point, Suarez 2 while he got some 11 points against Spurs in one week.) I'll have Lallana, Mata, Hazard, Aguero, Sturridge and Suarez. One of those 3 striker won't be in many teams. 🙂

          Sorry, that wasn't very lucid.

It's a tough problem. I'm trying to find a way not to have to choose between Lallana and Mirallas for my own team. My only solid advice is that you should have Aguero, especially if you're gambling on doing without Yaya.

I would have said B) but there are no midfield options worth having at 4.6, you'd effectively be losing a player.

Yep, I agree with that. Could work well.

People on here talk as though there's one single right answer that can be known right now and shown to be true before the games start. Obviously, we're all guessing but I think yours is as good a guess as any 🙂

Dropping Mirallas is definitely the lower risk option.

IMO it's ridiculous to contemplate losing suarez. Sturridge possibly, but no way suarez. I think only Aguero should be considered as a replacement for sturridge, remy/lukaku aren't in the same company.

Not so ridiculous to get rid of Suarez over Sturridge. I was late for Suarez and early on Sturridge, so have more value to lose selling Sturridge. I don't hold with this "can't sell, have to much transfer value to lose" anyway. It means less flexibility to change the team around.

Brought in Lambert for Sturridge for this GW only, intending to bring him back for the double GW 31.

(Southampton are playing Norwich next week, while Liverpool are away to United).

So, of my available players to play this week, I have:

        Cech (Mannone)
        Ward Shaw Ivanovic (Collins Brown)
        Hazard Lallana (Yaya, Nolan, Johnson)
        Adebayor Lambert (Suarez)

No mention of Olsson, assuming that means he's fine.

Played 90 against Villa and has supposedly been playing with it for a while so hopefully that means he'll play.

If we could get fpl to remove his flag, and lots of people buy him that would be great for me 😉

Will it be worth a hit -4 to bring in Yaya in place of Mata for DGW?

What's the news with Noone then? Wanted him for this gameweek but he's doubtful... Any other good midfielders for 4.5 or less?
