Scout Notes – Gameweek 37 – Tuesday

James Wilson is United’s goal hero as Ryan Giggs makes eight alterations to the United XI in their final home match of the season. Robin Van Persie emerges from the bench to fire the Red Devils’ third, whilst Matty Fryatt ruined the hosts’ clean sheet by notching for a much-changed Hull XI as Steve Bruce looks towards the FA Cup Final:

Giggs Bloods Youngsters
With only pride left to play for this season, and a new managerial reign potentially on the horizon, Ryan Giggs chose to showcase the talents of United’s academy last night. Whilst the likes of Juan Mata and Ashley Young found themselves consigned to the bench, teenagers Tom Lawrence and James Wilson both made their debuts in a United shirt, with the latter grabbing the headlines with two goals and a commanding display in the lone forward role. Adnan Januzaj was afforded his first start since a goalscoring performance against Newcastle back in Gameweek 33, and although he failed to pick up any attacking returns, the Belgian impressed throughout his 90-minute display and was heavily involved in the build-up to all three of his side’s goals, suggesting he may well keep his starting berth on Sunday.

Mata owners, meanwhile, now face the decision of whether to sell after last night’s no-show. In what has become one of the most disappointing double Gameweeks in memory so far, injuries and team selection leaving us filled with uncertainty and searching for alternatives as the final round of fixtures approaches. Ironically, David Moyes’ departure has lessened Mata’s Fantasy prospects – he’s started just one of Giggs’ three matches in charge, playing 96 minutes over that trio of fixtures.

Goalscoring Cameo for Van Persie
Whilst Wayne Rooney missed out once again for United with a groin complaint, Robin van Persie tasted action from the bench for the second successive game and rewarded the 1,200 managers to plump for his double Gameweek services with an 86th-minute goal and two bonus points. Although the Van Persie alternative has hardy proved pivotal across the Gameweek, those who took the ultimate gamble by investing in the Dutchman will be consoled by the fact that he outscored fellow heavy-hitter Sergio Aguero by eight points to five, and will hope to see him return to the starting line-up for United’s final game against Southampton on Sunday.

Whilst his owners will now likely hold after last night’s strike, Van Persie faces a tough task on Sunday at St Mary’s. Given that Southampton have conceded a single goal in their last four matches, Rooney and Aguero owners are more likely to target Liverpool and City alternatives, with Daniel Sturridge and Edin Dzeko set for significant investment prior to their respective home clashes with Newcastle and West Ham.

Jones Exits Early as Vidic Waves Goodbye
As well as shuffling the pack further up the field, Giggs opted for a unconventional defensive line-up, with Patrice Evra’s 11.4% ownership left disappointed by the full-back’s omission from the squad and Phil Jones the only defender to survive from last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sunderland. Jones, however, only lasted 21 minutes before leaving the field with a shoulder injury which could dent his World Cup hopes. Post-match, Giggs gave a tentative analysis of Jones’ condition:

“He knew straightaway he had done something. Usually when something like that happens it is not great. Hopefully he will be OK but it is too near [to the incident] to say.”

Owned by just 3% of FPL managers, Jones’ potential absence on Sunday will have minimal effect and will allow Giggs to freshen up the backline once again. If anything, last night’s teamsheet highlighted the fact that the Welshman’s next starting XI is likely to be equally unpredictable and with the rumours of Louis Van Gaal’s installation growing stronger, investing in any United player at this point carries an unnecessary degree of risk. Many managers loaded up on their assets prior to the double but a mass exodus looks likely as we turn to more secure options for Sunday’s finale.

Hull Strikers Blank Again
Having both notched in Gameweek 36, Hull’s forward duo Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic harboured a fair amount of attention going into the double Gameweek, but the pair ultimately disappointed. With the former only afforded 45 minutes at Old Trafford, and the latter an unused sub despite neither being eligible for the upcoming FA Cup final, the strike partners failed to make up for their blanks against Aston Villa at the weekend. Both sit firmly in the differential bracket and with Sunday’s opponents Everton conceding two or more goals three times in their last four fixtures, even a sub appearance could see Long or Jelavic get in amongst the points and give their owners that vital edge over their mini-league competitors. The only concern is that Bruce is now solely focussed on the Wembley clash with Arsenal and, as last night’s teamsheet showed, the Tigers boss may look to give his other forward options increased game time in preparation for the Gunners showdown.

In reviewing my ML, I thought i'd share a rather simple tactic one of my rivals adopted this season.

Since January, rival noticed that Pool and City would probably not stop scoring, and as a consequence would have crap defences. He used his WC to focus 6 attacking spots to Pool and City - Yaya Silva Aguero, Suarez Sturridge Sterling. Naturally, the captaincy was juggled between Yaya Suarez and Sturridge. The rest of the squad was average though he he had key coverage in defence (Azpi Kosc Adrian), and other crappy mids. In essence, he bet big on City Pool getting goals week in week out, and catching a high % of those points.

It's easy to say this was a good tactic on hindsight, he closed a 100 point gap between us and looks to go 20 ahead this week.

Just curious as to why not many other FFS folks adopted such a straight forward tactic? Or maybe the quiet ones did, while laughing at those who jumped from the JRods to Lukakus and Nolans to AJs and Eriksens.

I meant jumping on from January. Plenty missed alot of big hauls before getting on board. and had to take hits to get the guys in. But as a result of that too, it was not a tactic per se...it was chasing points and would ditch them when points dried up (silva and sterling cases in point).

Key as Luke Weston said, is be dynamic and spot the trend. One part of the season, 3 Arsenal were essential, then they were worth shipping for 3 City, 3 Liverpool. All about maximising players from the team who are going to hit form and adapting if that changes. It's my first season and I am top 3,000 and this has always been my way.

No, most ppl here are sheep and get on board after a player has had a big score then jump ship as soon as they get a quite week and some other bloke gets a big haul.

He is talking about taking taking a stand and sticking with it....

Nah, that's what casuals do. Most on here aren't casuals I'd say. I've never jumped on someone just as they've scored well 1 week. Obviously if they've scored well as their position/confidence has improved and a good run of fixtures is coming, then you consider them.

Say that as much as you will, but as soon as someone pretty popular gets a haul - the boards will be dominated by that option for the whole week though. Sess, Mirallas, AJ, Wilshere had weeks of massive bandwagons (fell for the Sess and AJ ones).

Just feel that the tactic of "picking fundamentally sound players and sticking to them" is underrated here.

Those are some bad examples. In the second half, I struggled mainly jumping between Nolan, Lallana, AJ and Eriksen trying to catch their form with fixtures. But it NEVER worked.

All scored points in the unlikeliest of fixtures. Which brings me to the main point - is there merit to sticking with a strategy of fundamentally sound players who have a higher chance of getting in on the points, whether or not its risking 6 of 7 attacking spots to them.

You have to. I've said all season, and this is my first op 3k, NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER worry about coverage. The most pathetic saying on here. People going with 2 City to free up space for coverage of Arsenal/Tottenham when City are banging them in are only going to lose out. Aim is to pick the players who will score the most and if that means taking 6 places out of 7 starting attacking places on just 2 teams, then so be it. It's definitely the right policy, so yeah, you are right.

Cheers, appreciate your opinion. Was just wondering if there's method to the madness. This is my first full season and unfortunately/fortunately, I was convinced that coverage is key.

Valuable lesson for next season! Pick players who play, pick players from teams who can score.

Fook the Eriksens of teams who score 3 goals 1 game, and then blank for the next 5. Pick the Sterlings of teams who scores 2 goals a game throughout the season.

This game is not about jumping on bandwagons but creating the bandwagon.
Just take a look at Suarez % in his first gw's, there were very few of us that were there from get go. Those that got on later were always one step behind.

Most probably are casuals, the one's I listen to have a good record and don't ever utter words such as 'coverage' and don't jump on bandwagons/get knee jerky. People say if you've not jumped on these bandwagons you're toast, this is my first season and I am top 3k and I have had YYT for half a dozen games and never had Ramsey. Maxed Arsenal when they were in form, and same for City and Liverpool.

yep exactly - meant taking a stand, adopting a tactic and sticking with it. leaving you flex for the other areas in your team and better opportunities to save FTs and have mini-WCs every couple of GWs.

While I was fixing headaches (like AJ and Mirallas and Lukaku) he was saving FTs left right center. Was even able to keep Yaya and Sturridge benched while they were both injured.

Those darn S's. Replace Sterling with Skrtel or Gerrard - there'd still be a valid case for picking 3 players with attacking threats from both those teams...and more importantly, sticking with them even if they are ruled out for a GW or 2.

Just feel that the strategy of picking fundamentally sound players is often overlooked, and groupthink makes it very tempting, at at times very convincing, to sell those players for others and then end up jumping from one bandwagon to the next.

The Scout Picks and Frisking the Fixtures features can also lead some of the sheep into thinking too short term, and talk of Differentials and criticism of Template Teams and so-called Casuals also discourages some from picking and sticking with the consistently solid players.

Agree. Unfortunately, that's where my inexperience has failed me. I depended very heavily on "majority" advice and the scout picks. On hindsight, "majority" decisions when you ask "Player X or Y please?" usually end up being sheep picks, as they would be 'obvious' but might not be the best decision for your team.

You've contributed many good points to this thread RedLightning, thanks.

Yes. I get a lot of good ideas from this site, but I like to make the final decisions about my squad myself.

No-one else is going to put the same amount of time and effort into deciding what to do with my squad as I do, so any advice about that received from others runs the risk of being a bit superficial, or based on other people's ideas or prejudices with which I might not always agree.

Sorry to eavesdrop but you really got a great point in there. It's your team and you have to make your own decision in every transfer either you would listen to others or to your gut or somehow a mix of both. Nobody would have said yes to my Lukaku> Wickham transfer on GW36.

It's truly is one of the lessons I've learned and you summed it up real good. :).

I thought that wiould be obvious, get the players that score the most points, I have spent the majority of the season with three from each although saying that I had Negredo during his 2 month blank spell and I wouldn't have had him if he hadn't of played for City. You just knew with City they were capable of scoring lots of goals

Yep would be obvious - but (i might be wrong), i didnt see that many times with 6 attackers from those 2 teams and then sticking to them through thick and thin. Leaving flex to save transfers and fix other cheaper players based on fixtures.

It's a vicious cycle no? For example, I spent a good 5-6 transfers going between Lukaku and Rooney and JRod, and then Lallana Nolan Eriksen Mirallas - hoping to spread the risk and "cover" attackers from other teams. Where on hindsight, it should have been better to have 6 of 7 attacking spots to City and Pool.

Some have 3 City or 3 pool...but I dont see many with 6 (!) all the way from January.

I had three Liverpool for most of the season, Aguero and Silva injuries meant I probably stuck with Yaya most for City.

Although saying that Hazard, Lallana, Rooney etc have all scored well this season. But if it came to a choice of Sterling in a free scoring Liverpool team or Mirallas/Eriksen/AJ etc then I would rather have Sterling any day!

I made the decision a few months ago to back City, Liverpool and Chelsea in the run in. Had 3 from each. Double Chelsea defence and Hazard, Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling and Kolarov + 2 city attackers. My plan broke down as my City players kept getting injured. Silva, Yaya and Aguero have been in and out a few times. The double Chelsea defence has been underwhelming most of the time I've owned them too as they stumbled.

It can be a good tactic but there is no guarantee the players you pick will keep their form.

Gerrard for example got loads of pens in the second half of the season with not so many in the first half. Yaya was a poor option with kun fit as he didn't have pens.

It is clearly more of an all in gamble placing so much trust in one or two teams for so long while ignoring form players from other teams that have the potential to score well. Placing all your eggs in one basket will usually either end in tears or glory and is probably not the best percentage play.

It is a tactic I have often employed myself but usually only for exceptionally good runs of fixtures over a prolonged period of 10 or more games. A lot of the "pros" would try and steer you more towards the "coverage" theory (which I don't agree with at all btw) which involves covering attacking and defensive points with the second or third best player from each team which in theory allows you to cover attacking or defensive pints from these teams.

Unknowingly, my original question boils down to "coverage" vs "pick players based on point potential, regardless of team" strategy.

There's certainly more risk in going for 6 out of 7 attackers from 1 team, a notion that easily scares managers away from adopting the tactic - mostly because they might look at individual weeks where the teams misfire.

It's quite like doubling up on a team's defenders right? Many stay away from doubling up defence because one goal effectively wipes 8 points + bonus from your potential score. However, say you invested in double Arsenal throughout the season...vs Arsenal + another defender. You might have had weeks with low scores from the Arsenal defenders, but as a whole - if youve stuck to the strategy and played them every week...you'd have a monster contribution from those 2 guys.

Same with investing heavily in LIV or MCI i guess. Weeks where they blank or score 1 goal, you suffer. But for example, this week. If you've got Sturridge Suarez Gerrard Yaya Nasri Aguero/Dzeko...you're pretty much golden and more than made up for those few (rare) blank weeks.

Again, its easy to say on hindsight. But I think there's a lesson here somewhere...!

Yeah I think going "all in" on certain teams with great fixtures is a great tactic. I had double Chelsea defence almost all season and while I suffered badly pre Xmas it paid off massively in the second half of the season. In a previous season I remember trebling up in attack for spurs and arsenal (bale vdv ade plus three arsenal Walcott plus two others) and this tactic worked very well for a period but I would think it is a valid strategy for a whole season or even half a season.

Going "all in" is an almost essential strategy if you want to win a short competition such as the Fantasy World Cup.

When Spain won, the most successful fantasy players were those who backed them to the hilt with the maximum number of Spaniards in their squads, not those who hedged their bets by trying to cover all the other teams.

Come on now let's not be silly he has something like 6 goals from play and 8 assists and the rest of his points have been from pens or dfks/set pieces.

Maybe if you knew Aguero would miss so much of the season and yaya would get pens when he was out he would have been a good pick but I will never listen to any argument that says a player playing Def mid that is second on pens costing 10m is a good pick.

The main times yaya got anything from play was when city played him attacking mid due to injuries to their 4 top strikers so if you had him be happy with your fortune but please don't try to justify him as being a good pick.

How can a player who scores 223 points in a season, more than any other midfielder, and never scores less than six points for more than two matches in a row, possibly be a poor option?

I don't care how he got those points, I didn't expect him to at the start of the season, and he may just possibly be less successful next season, but he is my first choice midfielder (and probably most people's) when it comes to voting for our FantasyTeam of this Season.

He isn't just a defensive midfielder anyway.

Not just a Def mid but in pelle formation he is primarily a Def mid. As I say below he has been a great player in fpl and in real life but the luck of circumstances is what made him such a good pick. If he breaks 180pts next season I'll eat my hat.

You've had another good season too. According to my calculations we are now level on 2,384 points, rising to 2,391 and 2,392 after auto-subs and baps. We might both finish in the top 2k, but the top thousand will probably have to wait for another season.

Your Dzeko outscored my Yaya this GW - the ideal, as it turned out, would have been to have had both instead of Aguero.

Yeah I turned it around second half of the season alright (311k in gw 22 after wc) but never had Coleman, Gerrard or hazard and only had yaya for three gws or so around their first dbl gw and wouldn't have even had him then but for kun being out injured.

If I knew kun was injured for these games I would defo have got yaya as the chances of him playing attacking mid and ofc pens make him a very attractive option when kun is out.

If yaya was attacking mid all the time he would be close to second or third pick on my team sheet tbf

I agree he has been a great mid in real life and epl but again that was more down to circumstances than design. Had Aguero stayed fit or negredo been able to play with Dzeko then he'd have a hell of a lot less points but that is the luck of the game. It is not as if like gerro he has all the pens and a large portion of corners/indirect free kicks. I would put my house on him not scoring as well next season unless he gets more time playing attacking mid again due to injuries

...I agree with you about not agreeing with coverage though. It is popular with many on this site, but I doubt whether many of the top players believe in it.

I think this notion of coverage is definitely a myth - just this season and last alone. I remember last season I wanted to go heavy on Chelsea mids with Mata Hazard but was told "its too much invested, spread your risk".

Same this season when I considered tripling up on Pool. Cost me big, as I sold Gerrard and got Sturridge instead of having all 3 Pool attackers.

Will try raising this point again when the season is over and more serious FPL managers are still on here.

That is weird as I played my WC at end of January and only got 1 Man City player and if I recall correctly they had an awful February and I was very pleased that I dodged the bullet of tripling up as I contemplated the same myself.

But that would have been offset by triple Liverpool, who had an amazing Jan+Feb giving captaincy options and results every week. While City still trickled along if you had Dzeko/Yaya/Nasri/Silva. Hence going heavy on both these teams would still have been beneficial.

Man City scored 1 league goal between 1st Feb and 15th March and it was scored by Yaya and assisted by Kolarov. In addition they had 2 blank game weeks GW26 & GW29, so having triple City attackers for that period it really sucked.

At the end of the day this is a gambling game and there is no perfect method to ensure victory. Some people like taking high risk, i.e. getting explosive players who produce big from time to time (Kolarov & Nplan being a prime example), some people overload with certain teams which again has its risks as it means you have 3 players scoring badly if that team blanks but can be very lucrative if it pays off, others prefer to spread the risk by getting only 1 and at most 2 people from a team and steadily score well without being explosive.

My own personal method is somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd and I use the stats & fixtures to guide my transfers and team selection. I try not to have 3 players from the same team but don't mind having 3 if the stats and fixtures indicate it has a good probability of paying off.

Fair points, didn't recall City having such a lean spell! But wouldve imagined plenty suffered along as well.

Yea it really is about striking a balance isn't it. I havent found a personal preference yet, but i'd much rather steadily score well as a team. Worked well for when I tried to average at least 60 points a GW and did so for about 10 GWs. Then I made some stupid transfers cos of blank GWs and really suffered.

Which brings me to another point of discussion that I might save for another time...how much is too much for a DGW. Haha. Thanks for the thoughts, much appreciated.

With regards to the DGW question, the trend I have noticed is it seems to pay off more earlier in the season than it does later in the season. However, I only have 1 year of data to analyse so not reading too much into it just now.

Re dbl gws later in the season can be epic as in previous years but it is all about the getting the right players rather than a quantity of players in my experience.

Yes, there are some differences between early and late DGWs.

Chelsea's DGW1 was easy to plan for, and afterwards we had the choice of either keeping and benching some of their players or of changing the squad with an early wildcard.

DGWs 31, 34 and 37 were all late in the season, but very different.
GW31 involved many of the top teams and players and was exceptionally high-scoring - in fact, it would have been high-scoring even if it had only been a single game-week.
GW34 involved fewer of the top teams, and some of the DGW-ers were outscored by single game-weekers that we might have been wiser to play rather than sell or bench.
And GW37 was so late in the season that a number of popular DGW-ers failed to play both matches.

Also, having DGWs and blank GWs so close together is likely to require more hits if you want a large number of GWG-ers than if they were spread further apart.

I'd say my strategy is pretty similar to yours rabmac in that I'm not afraid to go all in when fixtures permit but try and balance the risk out as much as possible also. Whether we like it or not we are playing the odds game and football doesn't always follow the odds which is what makes our decisions such gambles.

              So true mate. 😀

Obviously by playing the odds we increase our chances of success but they do not guarantee that success.

It is a bit like playing the stock market, you know if you buy a range of FTSE 100 shares and keep them long enough you will make money, which is probably one of the safest methods.

However, you are not going to strike it rich using this method and you need to gamble a bit and hope that the trend you spotted or the rise you anticipated pays off.

Go and check that lady's CV. She's wayyyy better educated than about 99,99% of male football managers, and has decent experience for his age too (two National Selections and scouting for a UCL playing club). If anything, she's over competent for that level, and a man with her CV would have already been appointed on higher level. I think they made an excellent choice that will prove successful to them - relative to their very limited capacities of course, Clermont ain't quite Bayern München.

It would be crazy if Chelski still won the league. Imagine City drawing against Villa tonight. Evens with Pool for last round. Then, against all odds, neither City nor Pool can handle the pressure on last round, but lose at home against Newcastle and West Ham, while a last minute Eden Hazard goal edges Chelsea past Cardiff and Chelsea wins the title. It would be an amazing finish for the season.

My only stickied post ever was giving people advice before GW 33/DGW 34 that they shouldn't sell Sterling for Barkley and that they shouldn't stress to get Zabaleta/City defenders because they weren't likely to get clean sheets the next games..

Since then Zaba has gotten 2ppg and 1 clean sheet, and Sterling is leading the form-table 😛

To me he seems the best, I don't really see much elsewhere, I've got Eriksen who could be useful but Spurs look lacklustre and Liverpool at home should (I hope) put on a show, and a Gerrard assist and penalty looks good for all 3 bonus points 🙂

Random thought of the day as I see A LOT of people taking a hit or two:

If you can field 11 players, taking a hit for ONE game is very unlikely to pay off since there's no price rises to catch and no future fixtures to plan for. Only proper reasoning I can see is if you have rivals within realistic distances, to cover/gain ground on. I'm considering Yaya & Dzeko for Nasri/Eriksen & Aguero (-4) since my rival 20 points behind have both.

Yeah hits rarely work out on the last day of season. Agree people should only take them if they can't field 11 at which point it would subsequently by max 2pt hit.

any liverpool fans interested in playing the blame game? Im going to go for Victor Moses. A useless impact sub whose horrendous first touch indirectly led to hendersons red, a player in form who could have steadied the ship at palace and possibly done a job against chelsea. Mig's xmas form as well cost us big time. he's not good enough. I would take reina over him anyday.

Your blessed manager deserves ALL the blame!

        1. Failure to obtain proper closure in the Suarez affair.
        2. Playing your captain out of position, where his long-standing propensity to give the ball away could cause maximum self-harm.
        3. Failure to play Agger over either of those two onanists that you lot are pleased to call centre backs.
        4. Failure to understand the context, weft and warp of the Season, thereby adopting tactics that were both naive, and ineffectual.

Migs has been a bit flappy. A good shot stopper but not very good at handling.
Agger not in the side to stabilise the ship.
Moses has been poor since he netted against Swansea, I'm always nervous when he comes on.

Delighted that people are finally coming around to seeing Mignolet as a poor replacement.

Who made these moves? Who signed Moses and Mignolet while turfing Reina out? Who insists on leaving Agger, far and away the best CB at Pool, on the bench? Who set up the team so any counterattack will only have to deal with 2 defenders in the way?

BR has had a great season, has gotten them playing some very attacking football but defensively he's been clueless. I know it seems like I'm taking a shot at him seeing as people are convinced he walks on water but there are a number of his policies I question. I don't want to take away from what he's achieved but I also think that his errors can't be ignored.

Thought the whole reina move was based on they couldn't afford his wages.
But they then pay 18 mill for a lump of a centre half

See I think it was because Reina was linked with a move away. Handled very badly, Reina didn't even know he was going on loan. Similar reasons behind benching Agger I think...

£18 mill for him, nearly £8 mill for Aspas too...

Completely disagree on Agger. It is necessary for Pool to play without Agger as first choice CB if they wish to win against top clubs. He has some qualities with the ball, but not better than Sakho, and is weak in duels. That Rodgers can see that they cannot continue with Agger, while fans fail to see that, is one of the reasons why he's a manager and fans are not. They have to learn to play without him, and it is better that was started this season and not next. They could do well to sell him now that he still has a price, and buy a DM who can actually stay fit for even half a season, or just keep him for rotation, as they will need 3 top CB's minimum when they have CL too, 4 would be better.

Actually, now that we speak of it, I found a nice article on this subject from March:

            http://www.squawka.com/news/why-sakho-should-start-against-sunderland/87678

Sakho has had to adjust to a new team and league without a pre-season, and still is doing better than Agger.

It could be a ponytail ending for Liverpool!

I'd back Carroll to score, perhaps not a hattrick though.
