The Community Round Up

Last week’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game caused a wave of excitement as our community competed for low user IDs, discovered player prices and quickly set up their first draft teams. As you’d expect, we’ve been overwhelmed by the number of community articles and hot topics generated by the new game, while many FPL managers have also set up new leagues for the season ahead- read on to discover how to join up:

The Community Articles

With the paint barely dry on the first draft teams to emerge from the FPL launch, community writer Christina was already considering radical changes in his assessment of the best time to wildcard.

Getting the best of the new crop of players is key every year and The Puntmaster has been compiling another handy pre-season spreadsheet to assess the newcomers’ prospects. You can read his guide (which is updated as and when new players are signed) and grab the link to the spreadsheet here.

Amongst the most talked about new players is Southampton’s new winger and set-piece specialist Dusan Tadic, who joins on the back of 16 goals and 14 assists for FC Twente. Bowstring the Trout was on hand to run the rule over his prospects and assess how he will fit into the south coast side’s 2014/15 set-up.

Need to read up on Burnley’s prospects for the season ahead? Clarets fan Saint Steve-O offered this analysis of the Lancashire side’s squad, looking at Sean Dyche’s potential line up and tactics upon their return to the top-flight.

The release of the FPL game affords Fantasy managers a better idea of the budget options in defence, allowing us to assess the best cut-price partnerships for the season ahead. Lanley Staural’s rotation analysis warns against basing decisions mainly on home and away fixtures, though – his alternative view on rotation urges Fantasy mangers to look closely at the quality of the opposition rather than where the game is played.

Hottest Topics

When the FPL game began updating on Wednesday morning ahead of its mid-afternoon launch, our community members had some tough decisions on their hands.

Giggs Boson ignored a fire alarm at work, Epicfail put off the call of nature due to limited Wi-Fi access in his smallest room and Grim Reaper refused to answer the phone at work.

Another reason for logging into FPL swiftly after launch was to grab a low user ID. The Missing Link offered key tips on how to achieve this and, following the launch, it was clear many had listened- HeyDudes13 nabbed the impressively low ID of 12.

Rate My Teams for the FPL game have been posted thick and fast over the last few days and prompted some excellent discussions on formation and player selection. This includes Arsenal’s Number 19 Santi Cazorla’s look at the wealth of options in the Arsenal Midfield, as Fantasy managers weigh up the Gunners’ options in the centre of the park.

For Lionel’s Messi Boxers, Stoke midfield duo of Peter Odemwingie and Marko Arnautovic presents managers with another important choice to make when tapping into the Potters’ kind early fixtures.

Elsewhere, for those new to the site, Innsie’s guide on posting the perfect RMT and asking for help will be essential reading.

Among the key changes in 2014/15 in all Fantasy games is the wealth of credible new options in attack, with Chelsea and Arsenal among those to significantly strengthen in this area. Granville predicts that many FPL teams in particular will be flooded with new players.

As well as the launch of FPL, the Premier League also rolled out its Ultimate Fantasy Premier League game, which requires more hands on management during each Gameweek. Analysing the fixture list and assessing which players can be swapped in on Sundays and Mondays is crucial to success, according to Tommy Tour’s excellent guide to the UFPL Sunday and Monday clubs.

Our resident Sky Sports Fantasy game expert D1sable was also on hand to offer his pearls of wisdom on how to succeed.

Whichever Fantasy game you are playing, clean sheets, assists and goals remain key. In our discussion on which players and teams will gain the most points from these key attributes, Siva Mohan predicts Cesc Fabregas will be the top assister, while Captain Jack and Billy Gilmore were among those who see another prolific season for Daniel Sturridge. Chelsea was the popular choice in terms of most clean sheets, although The Missing Yobo believes Tottenham could be in the running for that accolade after new boss Mauricio Pochettino helped Southampton to 15 shut-outs last time around.

Finally, MJ6987’s hot topic, which asked the community to vote on costly FPL picks against cheaper alternatives from the same teams was a popular shout. The Eden Hazard v Cesc Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez v Aaron Ramsey and Robin van Persie v Wayne Rooney debates were amongst the subjects up for discussion, with some intriguing results polled.

The Community Tournaments

Already a raft of community leagues have been created in the FPL game. Blue Lion has set up his “So You think You are Smarter Than a Casual” league (429-5287), while Messimerized has two leagues in FPL, his self-titled open to all league (26-630) and his Official Deadzone League (26-631), for those who visit Fantasy Football Scout overnight. Deadzoners are also invited to enter Innsie’s H2H Graveyard Shift league (10934-12169).

For those Fantasy managers that like to take a risk with their transfers Arvin-ation has set up a FFS Punters league (37064-16263).

The elite Fantasy managers who have notched up at least one Top 1000 rank finish can once again join PDM’s Top 1000 League ANY Season (16542-5955). The last five winners of this prestigious league are Pocky, Gareth Rees, Tom Pearson, Evs and Loz Sutty.

Meanwhile, RoysCallerAnne’s FFS Old Farts Club league (2475 1316) is once again open to those in the community who are 35 years old or over.

There are too many CB's to be fielded in every match in 4 man back line. I think they'll all be rotated.

That could be the case but it would still mean rotation which isn't a good thing from a fantasy perspective.

Ivanovic for harder away games, Azpi to provide width in easier games. Who knows really?

I have taken chances this year and gone for broke on 6 new or transferred players: Sanchez, Tadic, De Jong, De Buchy, Wisdon, Taggert. I left out because forwards are a bigger gamble, hence, no Pelle. It will probably put me on the back foot. Having said this, I have include Vlaar and Rose who may be transferred as well. I am tired of going for obvious choices, only nailing in Sturridge, Toure, Eriksen who I think will score this year once again. So you ask too risky; not really.

I agree, and I have him in my draft, but I think he is far from essential. Could easily be dropped for Jovetic, or Silva could play 10 with Navas wide.

Only player Ive seen that might be called esential is Suarez, and Dzeko is light years from those sort of returns.

I am not choosing players based on the first GW.

Krul and Elliot are as cheap as you can get for a combo. When one doesnt play, the other will.

Fixtures after GW1 are great up until GW10. By which time I will have probably sold him for Courtois.

    Irish Madridista ⭐
    • 13 Years

Someone make a case for why a striker over 8.5 is necessary?

Thinking of starting with just Giroud and Dzeko up front (Wickham or someone on the bench) in order to loosen up funds for the rest of the team, there's no doubting the value of Giroud/Dzeko at only 8.5, so why do I need to also splash out on:

RVP @ 12.5 - tired, long WC, disappointing for most of WC, most expensive player in the game.

Agüero @ 12.0 - injured for WC, problems last season, too risky to spend 12m yet.

Sturridge @ 11.5 - Overpriced? Not sold yet that he's worth 11+ after 1 good season, especially without Suarez hogging the defence's attention anymore..

Rooney @ 10.5 - No idea how he fits into LVG's plans yet.

Diego Costa @ 10.5 - new league, Chelsea-striker-flop-syndrome, most expensive Chelsea player.

Why not just load up on the OBVIOUS value in midfield and abandon the overpriced strikers?

The main argument I can think of is the difficulty of getting someone expensive in as it will probably take a hit to squeeze out funds, but I think the midfield you can start off with, plus the value in the 8.5 striker bracket, is worth maybe losing 4 points for a hit 2/3 weeks in.

I rate him highly enough -- and believe that LVG can create a more fluid attack -- that even if he does play in a deeper, wider role he can still be worth it with RVP and Mata on the pitch with him. And if RVP is indeed eased in than he is my first week captain.

Consistency. You need to buy at least a couple players that will deliver.

RVP and Sturridge are certainly that.

I wouldn't risk on Aguero or Rooney right now, but Costa could be a punt. Based on passed years of FPL, all the top teams had at least one of these big-hitter strikers and you would be foolish to ignore past performance.

A lot of this is 'wait and see'

In answer to your priced forwards:

RVP should be LVG's main man. Monopoly on direct free kicks and pens, probable captain, may get his mojo back.

Aguero went from being presumed injured, to smashing them in whenever he felt like it, and became temporarily essential

Sturridge plays for the second most attacking side. Likely to be the main central forward, and if you check the season ticker, quite favourable attacking fixtures to start

Rooney a la RVP, but cheaper, if he fits in. If he does, hes proven to slot them away and play 90 minutes every day if needs be

Costa is on the receiving end of Fabregas, Oscar, Willian, Salah, Schurrle, and Hazard. He theoretically should.

I can justify all of these, only time will tell if they are worth it. Keep an eye on pre season, I find it useful.

Afternoon all, 1st RMT of the new season below - whatcha reckon?

    Mannone, Myhill
    Debuchy, Cameron, Chambers, Mariappa, Wisdom
    Sanchez, Hazard, Ramsey, Eriksen, Albrighton
    Rooney, Dzeko, Pelle

Would start Debuchy most weeks (I think he'll do well under the new BP rules) and then rotate the other cheapies.

Pelle is a gamble being new to the league, so an upgrade to Giroud (downgrading Debuchy) is an option, as is downgrading him to Jelavic to fund Rooney -> RVP.

    Cheers

Are the new BP rules less skewed towards CB's? I think your Def and GK are getting very little points, but that is a strong midfield.

Yep, or at least full backs and centre backs are now far more even when it comes to BPs.

I usually start off super cheap at the back and try to get cheap players from teams capable of keeping a decent number of clean sheets, hence the SOT, STO and CPL picks. None are nailed on though so it could all end it tears! 🙂 Thoughts on the potential Pelle switches?

I reckon your defense is quite flimsy... much talk around these parts on Cameron and Chambers not being nailed and Wisdom is uncertain. Maybe downgrade a mid and put some cash into a Chelsea (fixtures) defender or at least have 2 solid starters and rotate 1 for your back 3. That's just my opinion... the rest looks solid.

Pretty good I think. Not sure Jones will offer much (will he even start?). Interested to hear why you went Long over Jelavic? The latter will still be on pens right, or could they go back to Brady?

I don't see who would force Jones out of the side atm, but "signings are imminent" according to Van Gaal.

I have to look at Long vs Jelavic a bit closer. I think Long has more talent, but maybe he doesn't always get a full game.

This is my 3 year with fpl but never posted here before.
Would like some feedback on my team.
    DDG/Myhill
    Cameron/Filipe luis/Wisdom/Mariappa/Targett
    Albrighton/Hazard/Mata/Özil/Gylfi
    Rooney/Costa/Pellé

    0.5 bank

I will be keeping my eyes open on the backline Vermaelen will come in if he moves and i might take in Davies instead of cameron or have to upgrade Targett.

This is my prediction on who will start the first game for Newcastle United, coming from a fan!

    4231

    Krul
    Janmaat Coloccini Williamson Santon
    Tiote Colback
    Sissoko De Jong Cabella
    Riviere

    NAILED
    Krul
    Janmaat
    Coloccini
    Tiote
    De Jong
    Riviere

    NOT NAILED
    Williamson -> Yanga-mbiwa, S.Taylor
    Santon -> Haidara, Dummett
    Colback -> Anita
    Sissoko/Cabella -> Gouffran

Williamson not guaranteed even though he started majority last year.
Santon not guaranteed due to high number of decent left back options.
I'm 90% sure Colback will start over Anita.
Gouffran was a consistent performer last year, but will probably be benched over new signing cabella and french international Sissoko.

    Other players:
Elliot - only play if Krul injured/suspended
R.Taylor - squad player, just back from long term injury
Ben Arfa - overweight, probably going to be sold
Marveaux - Injury prone, not a starter
    Obertan - useless donkey
Guitierrez - past it, recently come back from loan
Sammy Ameobi - comes on for last 10 of most games
Ayoze Perez - Recent signing, one for the future
Cisse - crippled, cant hit a barn door

Hope this helped! Howay the Lads!

oh dear we are a fickle bunch sometimes. he spent years of his england career being played with lampard despite them clearly not being able to play together.
his performance in brazil was poor but hes getting on now and he'd just finnished what must have been a hugely dissapointing season for him.
without a doubt one of the best English mids of the last generation - probobly not the best but well up there. another thing to note is the constant effort he puts in, chasing every ball .
in summary one should value the service he gave to his country nut just post throw- awy comments like about time etc.

Right, well having just signed up the ticker is worth it by itself, having said that did it more so to show support as I'm notorious for losing track of all my fantasy teams for months on end, but the pub football team wanted a mini league (dreamteam & FiT) so hopefully can keep focus this year...

Any thoughts on this would be great - the fact that i've just done my FiT team means I've probably ballsed this one up...

Foster / Myhill - Yeah i wanted that extra .5mill
    Rafael / Terry / Dunne / Chambers / Wisdom
Sanchez / Hazard / Arnie / De Jong / Sess
    Pelle / Rooney / Dzeko

DEF - will be whoever I can get for QPR & SOT to rotate, selling Terry for Luis if needed.
MID - Rotate De Jong and Sess mainly and dropping Arn for the City match.
FOR - Fancied Pelle or Tadic due to fixtures...was toying with Tadic and Crouch which would free up an extra 1mill

    Any thoughts?
