Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – McGeady at the Double

Aiden McGeady scores twice as the Republic of Ireland edge past Georgia. Theo Walcott is closing in on a return to action for Arsenal. Jordan Henderson is a doubt for England’s clash with Switzerland, Aleksandar Kolarov nets for Serbia, whilst West Ham’s new boy Enner Valencia also gets amongst the goals for Ecuador.

McGeady at the Double

The Everton wide man scored both goals for the Republic of Ireland in a 2-1 triumph over Georgia yesterday, while team-mates James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman picked up an assist apiece.

The Scout Says: McGeady’s display bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting role for the Toffees’ trip to West Brom next weekend. With Steven Pienaar sidelined due to a groin problem at home to Chelsea, McGeady returned to the first XI and picked up an assist in the 6-3 defeat – with a goal and assist over his two league starts so far, then, he’s been one of the Merseysiders’ most impressive performers thus far. If the South African remains sidelined for a prolonged period, the Republic of Ireland star could be handed greater pitch time by Roberto Martinez as Everton go in search of their first win of the season.

Walcott On Course for Return

Reports suggest the Gunners winger could be poised to return to action for the Gameweek 6 home encounter with Spurs on September 27.

The Scout Says: Sidelined since early January with a knee injury, Walcott’s loss was sorely felt by Arsene Wenger and Fantasy managers alike. The wide man grabbed five goals and four assists in just nine starts last term but, as we saw earlier in the 2013/14, the Gunners boss tends to ease Walcott into action with a series of sub appearances as he builds up his fitness. The same scenario looks likely – all the more so given that Wenger has the likes of Alexis Sanchez to field on the right until Walcott is fully fit, but there’s no doubt that once he’s up to scratch, he could be a major differential over the autumn. With the schedule turning kind for Arsenal from Gameweek 8 onwards, Walcott could offer an alternative to Aaron Ramsey or even a double-up option with the Welshman for our five-man midfields.

Valencia in the Goals

West Ham’s summer signing played 76 minutes of Ecuador’s 4-0 win over Bolivia yesterday and fired his side’s third goal before making way.

The Scout Says: Valencia has been eased into action by Sam Allardyce after a late start to pre-season training as a result of his World Cup duties. A couple of late sub appearances over the last couple of league matches has ensured he remains off our radars for now, though as his fitness builds up, it’s surely just a matter of time before he replaces Carlton Cole as the Hammers’ lone forward. With Liverpool, United and City in the next six, though, few Fantasy managers will be looking to the Upton Park outfit as a source of investment right now.

Kolarov Nets in Serbia Draw

The enigmatic City left-back reminded us all of his capabilities last night by firing home a 30-yard free-kick in Serbia’s 1-1 home stalemate with France.

The Scout Says: This is just typical of Kolarov. We handed him a place in the Scout Picks as City entertained Stoke last time around and he brought home just two points after the champions stumbled to a 1-0 home defeat. Tellingly, he was dropped for the Gameweek 2 clash against Liverpool, highlighting Manuel Pellegrini’s tendency to pick the defensively-minded Gael Clichy against trickier opponents – given that City square up to Arsenal and Chelsea in the next two, the Serbian may have to make do with bench-warming duties in spite of last night’s strike.

Henderson Concern for Reds

Reports suggest the Liverpool midfielder is a doubt for England’s match with Switzerland this evening after picking up an ankle problem in training.

The Scout Says: With question marks also surrounding the availability of Daniel Sturridge, it’s been an eventful international break for Brendan Rodgers. One of the first names on the Liverpool team sheet, Henderson missed only three matches last season as a result of suspension, and despite the fixtures coming thick and fast, his guaranteed pitch time means he looks immune to rotation. A possible period on the sidelines could allow Adam Lallana a route into the Reds’ first XI ahead of four favourable home matches in the next six, though with two assists in the first Gameweeks, Henderson’s 15% of Fantasy Premier League owners will be hoping he can quickly recover.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Where next for the template?

With the fixtures shifting after the international break and injuries mounting up what do we think the template formation will be over the next two to three months. Will we see more 3-5-2 formations? Or has the template finally been broken up with price changes proving not as important as in previous seasons and so many similarly priced options in midfield?

If 3-4-3 is to survive what will a template frontline look like over September and October? Will Rooney ownership drift even further away? Can risky players like Balotelli ever achieve more than 30% ownership?

Think it all depends on Welbeck. If he is any good then t theprice he will be impossible to ignore.
Having Welbeck makes 352 difficult as he really the third striker position.

However it Webeck no good them Naismith or the leicester boy in a 352 ooks good

ps Prce changes are more important this yeear not less

I think 3-4-3 will survive mainly because 2 new world class forwards in the epl. Falcao and Balotelli. Welbeck too if he can establish himself quickly in the Arsenal team.

As for Rooney, the next 3-4 games will tell. If he plays as a CM as expected together with Falcao performing at his best, his ownership will drop even more.

Comparing Balotelli and Falcao? Silly boy.

I didn't compare, just said they were both world class. I can say Cr7 and Bale are 2 world class players but that doesn't mean Bale is comparable to Cr7. Balo on his day is a beast.

i think we will see less template teams, without many price changes, we don't need a player all season, we can jump off, and buy him back some weeks later just for 0.2/0.3 more instead 0.5/0.6, like last year. Probably template teams just for 4/5 gws

3-4-3 once we hit October. Free for all until then.

City - Aguero, Dzeko / Jovetic
      United - Rooney, Falcao
      Chelsea - Costa
      Arsenal - Welbeck
      Spurs - Adebayor
      Liverpool - Sturridge / Balo

I really can't imagine 3 of the above not being essential come October once teams have settled on a XI and get going.

This is spot on in my opinion. We've gone through this debate season after season and it quickly becomes clear each season that strikers become priority and the rest of the squad can be makeshift to accommodate big hitters.

The likes of City will always pose the risk of free scoring against teams for fun, they always hold the potential to pass through an entire opponent's XI - not having a City striker in your squad is suicidal regardless of their opponents.

We saw Liverpool last season and they seem to be picking up precisely where they left off - which is a surprise to me. They dismantled a Spurs team who'd just battered local rivals QPR and it looked easy. Sturridge is clearly the main man regardless of how many points he scored vs Spurs, and he will rack up points.

As for Chelsea, they finally seem to have that striker who can convert chances and it's scary to see. 6 goals in a game vs Everton at Goodison Park is pretty much unheard of but they found themselves with chance after chance. Costa will become a solid selection in everyone's team by Christmas if he remains fit.

The likes of United and Arsenal are where the roll of the dice comes in. United have been poor so far but let's be realistic with the signings we've made, as soon as we have a fully fit XI there's going to be some beatings delivered out. Who'll be the main goal scorer is what'll be interesting to see - Van Gaal has some important decisions to make but I wouldn't be surprised to see Falcao become United's main man. That said, RvP may get back in the goals and I can mainly see Rooney being sacrificed to midfield to accommodate a formation.

Arsenal goals seem to be spread through and they don't have the concept of a talisman in their team I'd say. Ramsey, Sanchez, Walcott, Welbeck and Giroud will take a lot of the points between them (maybe throw in Ozil?) so it may well be worth switching a prem striker role with one of the midfielders like Wally but I'd rather go for a striker who'll be a focal point in the box then try to chance on luck.

Then you get to Spurs, Everton and I think Southampton will soon begin to erupt. Pelle, Adebayor and Lukaku are going to be "those" form strikers this season who you either catch at the right time or miss altogether points wise and I think that'll be key to a good rank.

But yeah, in short I agree 😎 3-4-4 will live on...

i also think there will be less template teams as such but 343 as a formation should survive, esp. now with new options such as Falcao, Balo, Welbeck - and others will slowly adapt to their clubs and bring in more returns, i.e. Pelle/Zarate to name a few

    8. Pompel
      • 10 Years

If both Falcao and Aguero fires on all four, whilst Costa still delivering the goods, I think the 3-4-3 will be still be template. However, with the likes of Naismith, Welbeck, Pelle etc. providing enticing budget forward options, a combined 3-5-2/3-4-3 strategy, depending on fixtures is tempting. This would allow for 5 strong mids + one strong defender.

    9. Marknlard
      • 15 Years

I started the season 3-5-2 and now I'm on the wildcard I've changed to 3-4-3. Welbeck as a sub 7.0 top 4 striker makes it possible. I'm not that big a fan of him as a player but that kind of value can't be overlooked.

Alongside Siggy and Sterling in midfield and that leaves a lot of money to spend on the rest.

The short time future of 3-4-3 depends on the man in the middle of it, as Falcao/Roo and Costa seems the likely heavy men.

Welbeck, Dzeko and Adebayor to fight it out the next couple of rounds.

That sounds like a silly rotation imo. If Welbeck ends up playing week in week out on top for Arsenal you'll rarely bench the guy. You'll end up with all Tadic points on your bench most likely.

There is no such thing as a fixed template and never has been - it's just a figment of the imagination.

Some players and formations are considerably more popular than others, but they keep changing.

The one constant seems to be that 3-4-3 nearly always wins out in the end.

So are we going to see a whole new set of differentials in Zaha, Dyer, Di maria, Saido,Walcott, Tadic, Welbeck, Falcao, Ballotelli etc? Anybody that i missed?

The whole point of picking a differential is to pick them before they actually start bringing in the points and have high ownerships.

Mmm ... apparently not. You just need the right combination of players.

You must be sure that your differentials get at least an assist, and preferably a goal.

If one of them has an event, then you're laughing.

For example take Sou fixtures. If Tadic explodes and you wait for 2-3 weeks you will lose a lot of points and part of the easy fixtures. Unless you have a mid that can replicate that sort of form.

Di Maria and Balotelli are the only ones I'm worried about not having in that list. Welbeck isn't gonna run away with it given the fixtures (even if you ignore him needing time to settle). Don't see Falcao getting 90min straight away. Walcott is probably 3/4 games away from a start and the others have a low ceiling.

I was just giving examples of probable differentials.
Welbeck would be gold if he is able to score in those difficult fixtures. And if he does i believe he wont remain 6.9 come GW 8.

I'm bored so I'm gonna write out something unimportant.

    The Welbeck dilemma.

His quality is debatable, some say he's shite, some say he got the potential to do well up front. His last season's underlying stats shows that he does have a decent record up top, second only to SaS.

Now that he's in Arsenal who have no quality striker at their disposal atm, Welbeck should be nailed on for the striker role and it's looking good. I mean if Giroudonkey was a decent FPL player in Arsenal, then Welbeck should be better.

His run of difficult fixture in a way is a blessing in disguise because we get to observe him for a few GWs before (maybe) bringing him in for Arsenal's nice run of fixture GW8 forward.

Note that by then Walcott would come back and may threaten Welbeck's position (?) Especially since both Sanchez and Walcott plays a similar role - a right wing - so one of which might play up top.

Assuming Welbeck does okay though, say 2 goals in the next 4 games, would you bring him in?

So long as he's starting PL games as lone striker then he's worth a go.

I've seen people debating who is the better pick between Mirallas & Tadic but has anybody considered integrating both of them into your team? Both are very good picks considering their fixtures & form factor. Both players have the share of set-pieces as well.

    On my WC. Considering this.

    Hazard, Sterling, Mirallas, Tadic, Siggy
    Balotelli, Costa, Welbeck

I know going forward there will be a bench headache but I'd like to think this gives me flexibility & once the dust settles on I can decide whether it should be 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 going ahead.

    Thoughts?

Just checking to see if I'm good to go for this week (pending injuries ofc). Right captain choice and playing Moore over PVA?

    Courtois
    Clyne Colo Moore
Hazard (c) Ramsey Mata Sterling Siggy
    Aguero Adebayor

Subs: Gilks, Vaz Te, PVA, Wisdom.

It is crazy to go mega-cheap (4.0 x 4, 4.5) at the back in order to go big up top?
    would allow

    Fab, Siggy, Sterling, Walcott/Ramsey

    Aguero, Falcao, Costa

      Yes, imo.

Who would you sell to get Sterling in?

    A. Fab
    B. Hazard
    C. Ramsey
    D. Keep all the above and downgrade Rooney to, say, Adebayor or Dzeko, to free up funds

    ?
