The Community Round Up

The international fixture break gave our community writers and posters a chance to reflect on their Fantasy squads, rue early transfer moves and consider the key factors that drive them to invest in certain players. Statistics also came under the microscope, both in our Members tables and hot topics, and we also take a look back at our latest Community league leaders.

The Community Articles

With Arsenal and Everton among those sides set to benefit from a kind schedules in the coming weeks, many of the community are looking to refresh their teams.

In Everton’s ranks, Leighton Baines is a proven performer but with a price tag of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), many Fantasy managers face a tough task squeezing him into their squads. Luckily, two of our community writers were on hand to analyse our options. Alimnator offered a nuts and bolts guide to squeezing Baines in with as little fuss as possible. Meanwhile, Robinho looked specifically at which midfielder to ditch to free up funds for the pricey defender.

Elsewhere, goal attempts came under the microscope of community writer Banana Shaquiri, who rolled out an excellent comparison between foxes in the box that shoot from close range and those players who tend to fire from distance.

Among the sharpest players from close-range this season is Diego Costa, but as Tiggsy pointed out in his article on life without the Chelsea forward, perhaps he is not as essential as many Fantasy managers think.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Although foxes in the box may be more effective in Fantasy terms, there’s no denying the attractiveness and excitement of a well executed, spectacular long range effort. There were plenty of these out-of-the-box howitzers mentioned in Kerz’s discussion on the best ever goal. Wakey, for example, went misty-eyed recalling Matt Le Tissier’s 1994 goal for Southampton against his beloved Blackburn Rovers.

Another player to make football fans weak at the knees is Manchester City’s David Silva. But as Kurren pointed out, from a Fantasy Premier League perspective Silva’s attractive play is less than impressive as it is failing to rack up bonus points. He wonders whether there is still a case to bring back the man in the stand style bonus system to better reward easy on the eye midfield maestros like Silva.

Goalkeepers are another group that the FPL bonus point system is failing to reward, argued Evs. He was left flabbergasted that Manchester United’s David De Gea received no bonus despite his penalty save.

However, there is no sense of injustice among Sergio Aguero owners. The Manchester City forward is among those favoured by the FPL bonus allocation and has received at least one bonus point every time he has scored this season. Nevertheless Rickardinho pondered whether Aguero is still worth his £12.2m price tag and if Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck may offer similar rewards for better value.

An injury to Mesut Ozil this week, which will rule the midfielder out for around 10 to 12 weeks, may still have an effect on Arsenal’s attacking output. In our discussion on The Gunners’ injury situation Moin believes that there is enough creativity in the midfield, most notably from Santi Cazorla, to ensure Welbeck prospers over the coming weeks without the German’s assists.

Meanwhile, for those Fantasy managers praying their players do not follow in Ozil’s injured footsteps, Honeybadger offered up this handy list of international fixtures.

Ozil’s injury also offered a painful reminder to the 5,000 FPL managers who drafted him in this week of the perils of an early transfer during an international break. Earlier this week, Granville wondered whether such early moves have any merit unless slender budgets and price rises are a factor.

As if to rub salt into the wounds of those unlucky 5,000 new Ozil owners, RoysCallerAnne sparked this discussion on lucky Fantasy Football moments. For Waldez, his luckiest moment came when Hull’s James Chester and his 15 FPL points came off the bench in the first match of this season for Chelsea’s Filipe Luis, who failed to start away at Burnley. For Ginkeroo, it was a snow-ravaged week some years back when Everton’s Tim Cahill emerged as the only player to rack up a decent points haul.

Some may say that luck plays a part in our community writer Puntmaster’s startling success in predicting high scoring differentials. Turns out quite a bit if skill is also involved as he revealed in his step by step guide to successful punting.

Analysing the data available in our Members area plays a big part in the Puntmaster’s success. But RoysCallerAnne is not as convinced in the value of statistics. While he admits that his post questioning the value of statistics may have started in unnecessarily controversial fashion, the ensuing discussion offered a fascinating insight into the community’s transfer decision-making process.

On a similar theme, we asked how much does ownership % and the transfer market effects our decisions around squad selection.

Finally, Beseoulbadger has been listening to our most recent Scoutcast and started up this discussion on potential changes the community would like to see.

The Members Tables

Gigging Order has been looking at the Arsenal Midfield to take advantage of their kind run – particularly useful for Ozil owners looking to retain investment in the Gunners’ asset in the centre of the park.

Arsenal were also the focus of Arvination’s look at the best attacking and creative players in teams with a kind forthcoming fixture list. He also took time out to cast an eye over Everton’s main men.

To supplement his Foxes in the Box versus Long Rangers article, Banana Shaquiri has created a pair of handy tables. His first looks at the chief exponents of goal attempts from inside and outside of the box, while his second looks at where teams are conceding goal attempts, to help find out where the foxes and long rangers will have the happiest hunting ground.

Intrigued by the increasing number of budget options among West Brom’s ranks, I’ve been looking at the Baggies’ main close-threats.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Dusan Citizen won AZ’s Early Bird Cup, defeating DT42 in the final by eight points. His transfer in of Manchester United’s Angel Di Maria proved crucial.

Tinkerman retains top place in the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league, closely followed by our injuries expert Facer. Paul is another to keep his eye firmly on the prize, with an 11 point lead over Anorak in the moderators and contributors Ultimate Fantasy Premier League mini-league.

The safety score in TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing was 46 in Gameweek 7. This meant 70 teams were eliminated and 1,117 progress.

On WC this week. Here's the team I'm looking at:

    Adrian 4.0
    Baines Ivan Chambers Bertrand 4.0
    Sterling ADM Siggy Chadli Boyd
    Aguero Costa Cisse

This will leave me with 0 in the bank.
One of the moves involved is Fab to Chadli. Chadli looks like rising tonight so I kinda have to commit to this now or I won't be able to make it.
I saw someone comment before about how they thought Aguero might not play the next gameweek, anyone else know anything along those lines? Don't want to make the Fab to Chadli move unless it is to be able to make this team as I've had Fab from the start and would be hard to get him back.
Thoughts on my conundrum? Comments on the team?
    Cheers all.

It looks like a great team, tbh. Saying that, most WC teams look great.
Personally, I think you've invested too much in defence. I would only spend that much at the back on the 2nd WC, but that's just my opinion of course.

No, I would keep Bertrand for the next 5. Pick one of Baines/ Ivan to downgrade and get yourself 3 premium mids.
I hate posting things like this, tbh. It's your team and you obviously like the idea of going big at the back, so definitely don't let me discourage you!

cheers, all good. It's the fun part of a wildcard and sorting out your team before the season starts - all the different permutations to get what, on paper, looks like the perfect team, then after 1 maybe 2 weeks, is a right shambles! 🙂
btw, just seen that if I keep fab and have cisse instead of welbeck I have 4.4. to spend on a def in place of baines.

Chambers/Bertrand is quite the rotation! I suppose you could even go four at the back when Siggy or Chadli have a tough away fixture. If you're confident that those defenders will bring the points in, go for it. The Cisse pick is a great risk to take, good luck with it!

Cheers guys. Out of interest, who from def would you downgrade and where would you rather the money spent? There's a 3mil difference for me between Chadli and Fab and if I took that much out of defence it then probably becomes too weak.

A really strong team. Close to perfect imo although you'll be hoping Cisse can keep up with the likes of Welbeck and Pelle

Cisse is definitely a punt. It's something different alright and I dont want to discourage you but that team is definitely relying on it's defence. Could work out well though, if it doesnt you could always downgrade a defender and upgrade Chadli or Cisse.

Whilst it's quiet...Chambers is suspended this GW and will probably be replaced by Bellerin..but...Wenger made some noises earlier in the season (whilst talking him up) that Chambers could play Full back, Centre Back...or Midfield..and he played him there in pre season a little bit...With Arsenal's current injury list what are the chances that Chambers returns OOP ?

Dunno, I'm sure an Arsenal fan could clue you up. But from past experience, an OOP defender playing as DM is no real benefit points wise.

Defensive mid, as we've seen before is often worse than OOP. If he could get himself further up the pitch yeah, but thats really unlikely.

Decent he's mentioned he wants to play him in midfield but the injury pile up in defense has stalled that. Should get a chance this season and hopefully he excels at it

I have no idea what Wenger means by midfield...as part of a double CDM then it's pants...a double pivot better...but Arsenal have been doing a bit of 4-1-4-1 lately...that could get very interesting...

          • 10 Years

I think it would be him in double pivot next to Ramsey or if he keeps this nonsense 4141 up then he'd be the last one back. He's good defensively that's his strength

I'd rather Chambers play full back than defensive mid honestly.

As a full back, they tend to go up the pitch much further than defensive mids.

How are ahead are people looking with their moves? As of now I have one eye on January and that sweet sweet wildcard, and I want a solid team up until then. With my WC already played, can't afford to be too risky with short term picks.

Got me thinking about those wanting to ditch Fabs to get Baines. Sure Evertons fixtures are good up until Christmas aswell but Chelsea have a pretty sweet run of it too. If you factor in Utd and Liverpool having leaky defences, chelsea have it pretty sweet attacking wise into the New Year.

Many bringing in Tadic and co may want to reconsider in the long run (GW13 onwards), unless they're planning on switching to the next cheap player with easy fixtures, but you cant do this in every position every week, esp if you're doubling/trebling up on Southampton.

I'm just sticking to a 1 or 2 week plan, as always. We all know how much can change in such a short period.
I still have my WC and I'm glad for it, as most post WC teams look pretty similar to mine.
In seasons past I would have elaborate 4, 5 and 6 week plans made out but I have learnt that is just nonsense. Ramsey/ Rooney in the same week .... etc etc

        • 10 Years

Can have the opposite effect though. If you set yourself up for the long run, you have a better chance of dealing with injuries like that rather than putting out fires every week. Agree with things like I'll have Rooney for 3 weeks, then sell for Sturridge when his price drops. Stuff like that rarely goes to plan.

I honestly feel that you can only set yourself up for the "long run" in GK/ Def.
If you're happy-ish with those 7, you can remain fluid with transfers for the front 8 on a week to week basis and hopefully only use a FT at the back sporadically.

So why is Bentaleb in the question above? Surely it's Hazard + whoever vs Hazard & Berahino unless you don't plan on playing him too.

coz i dont want to drop Sterling, ADM, Hendo and Tadic. not yet...

so i will rotate Berahino with Hendo (or maybe Tadic)

Got 1FT and 0.3M ITB. How to use it? Balotelli>Welbeck?
That gives me 2.9M for next week if needed.

    Begovic
    Baines Clyne Duff
    Sigurdsson Di Maria Sterling Fabregas
    Balotelli Costa Pelle

    Bench: Moore, Wisdom, Marney

Made some pretty dodgy transfers and have ended up with a colossal front eight and a rubbish defence.

Which of these would you downgrade in order to get Baines?

    Haz Fab ADM Sterling Siggy
    Welbs Pelle Diego

The consensus on here seems to be Fab out, but I might wait until the QPR game. I do need an Everton & an extra Arsenal player though and it may end up with Sterling getting the chop.

The consensus here isn't always right lol if you can go against the grain here and win, you can move up the ranks pretty quickly.

Sterling has some great fixtures. Frankly, I dont think I can begin to think about it til after the internationals.

On a WC this week without Kun and ADM along with 3 or 4 dead weight I pulled the trigger. So here is the first draft any thoughts would be great

    Szczesny 4.0
    Baines Clyne Wisdom Moore xxx
    ADM Sterling Siggy Mane xxx
    Welbeck Ageuro Costa

Have 8.5 for the last 2 spots

    Cheers

Think I'd be tempted to downgrade Szczesny so you get a bit more leeway on the two outfield picks. Finding good options on a 4/4.5 split will be tough.

What has been your worst transfer this season?

Costa > Adebayor ahead of GW4 is easily mine. Costa went on to score two, Adebayor blanked, and I had to get Diego back for a hit soon after.

Mine has got to be Coloccini ➡ Coleman. On paper, it made sense, a Newcastle defender on a team leaking goals for a proven attacking fullback. Got him in after GW3 and he's been injured since and managed to drop in price as well.

My biggest fail I suppose was not making a transfer. Shouldve got ADM in for Ramsey on a WC but stuck with him.

As for actual transfer, havent really made a bad one. Mata and Costa out for Sanchez and Adebayor maybe. Ended up on about the same points and had to bring Costa back but was planning on WCing anyways so too a punt on Sanchez for that week.

He played great for us tonight and was unlucky not to score. Would have been a storybook ending. If Jurgen didn't have such a big ego, he would have included LD in the WC roster and he would have made a difference guaranteed. He will be missed for sure....class act.
