The Community Round Up

A wind of change is in the air as the community battens down the hatches and braces itself for a dramatic shift in the fixture list. As we patiently sit through the third international break of the season, our community writers have indulged in a spot of crystal ball gazing, with a little help from their calculators and, surprisingly, Jimmy Bullard. We also catch up on the latest statistics in our members tables and some impressive league leaders in our community tournaments.

The Community Articles

Crystal ball gazing was taken to new number crunching levels by Footballoholic and Gillesdegoult this week. Firstly, Footballoholic presented this excellent look at the goal scoring potential of all Premier League sides over the next six weeks, based on the defensive form of their opponents, before Gillesdegoult then followed this research up by combining attacking form of all teams.

Heels over heads was also busy soothsaying, looking at the defensive form of Premier League sides over a number of seasons to assess whether Southampton can significantly add to their seven clean sheets so far.

Christina has been looking ahead to Christmas and provided us with this Dickensian look at some of the Premier League’s struggling sides chances of success over the festive period.

Finally, with a little bit of help from former Wigan and Hull legend Jimmy Bullard, John Terry’s Dog looked at the similarities of being a Fantasy Football manager and running a business.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article. We also offer £25 to the writer of the most popular article each month.

The Hottest Topics

An imminent shift in the fixture list, when Southampton’s kind run comes to a dramatic end and Chelsea and Liverpool face easier opposition, dominated discussion this week.

Ahead of Liverpool’s run over the next four Gameweeks (cpl, STO, lei, SUN) many are eagerly awaiting Daniel Sturridge’s return from injury. In our discussion on how his comeback will affect our teams, Doosra and myself took a good look into his recent statistics to assess just whether his reputation for selfishness in front of goal is myth or reality.

For many, though, Liverpool’s good fixtures mean little when their recent form is so dire. In our discussion on the form over fixtures debate Moin was among the fixture list fans, while Gary 32 pointed out that Spurs recent poor home record against weaker teams proves form can often win the day.

Turning to Southampton’s poor run of fixtures, that includes Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal in the next four, Dat Guy has been looking at the south coast side’s form against bigger sides. This provided a compelling argument for ditching Saints defenders, while in stark contrast Accounting on Chris believes that they could be worth hanging onto despite the tough upcoming opposition.

Dat Guy also looked at some emerging conflict of interests coming up in the fixture list, where popular defenders face well-owned attackers. To get on top of such issues the community is urged to make full use of our season ticker, which has been afforded an autumnal refresh to take recent form into account.

Chelsea’s fine upcoming run (WBA, sun, TOT, new, HUL, sto) has many Fantasy managers mulling over which Blues players to draft in. But Sinik wonders whether now may be a good time to cash in on Cesc Fabregas’s recent price rises and look elsewhere among their ranks. Eden Hazard has the potential to thrive but Eaglia remains unconvinced and believes his strong performances are still not being converted into solid Fantasy Football returns.

On numerous occasions, a change in system can be attributed as a key reason for some players’ failure to being in the points. However, in Giggs Boson’s tactics talk, he believes it’s far too simplistic to blame formations when players fail.

Among those to benefit from a team’s change in tactics is Leighton Baines, who, under manager Roberto Martinez, has been given considerable licence to attack down Everton’s left flank. In our latest round up of so-called ‘essential’ players Baines was a name mentioned time and again – Brian (not the messiah) is among his many fans and later in the week urged Baines owners to cling on to him for dear life. Another member of the Baines fan club is MJ6987, who placed the Everton defender on his list of the best four Fantasy assets.

Our biggest discussion this week was sparked by Bojan Is For Kinnear with the simple line “You know you’re a Fantasy Football addict when…”. Among the best replies was from TheHut who recounted the many times his question of ‘who got the assist’ is met with incredulity from fellow spectators.

Finally, a message from Bsloebadger also proved to be one of the most talked about hot topics this week. Concerned that people take too much heed in a person’s rank when receiving advice, he instead believes everyone’s advice is valid, whether highly or lowly ranked. The key criteria for giving and receiving advice should instead be politeness, he added.

The Members Tables

Manchester United is another team that have improved fixtures on the horizon. I’ve been taking a look at their attacking threat. Members are urged to sort this table by last two Gameweeks to see who has been the Red Devils’ most prolific shooters since their switch to a more defensive formation.

Sturridge’s imminent return prompted Doosra to carry out a temporary revamp of his Forward Foragers table, which takes a look at the strikers who excel at holding the ball and providing chances. This now focuses on last season’s statistics to give a better look at the Liverpool striker’s statistics.

Elsewhere, Guidinho has constructed a table to focus on full back potential, with a strong focus on crossing and creativity.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Leagues

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, 878 teams survived after 54 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 55.

In the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league Tinkerman has opened up a 22 lead on second placed Mark. With a rank of 79th overall, Tinkerman will be tough to catch.

Tinkerman has to settle for second in the Long and Winding Road main league behind league leader King Nil Miss, who is 18th overall.

Rasping Drive, who is 43rd overall, continues to dominate many of our other community leagues, topping the FFS Old Farts Club, FFS Dead Zone and The Puffinboy Memorial Cup.

Did Baines goes out that will mean I'll have a bucket of cash to spend. Quite enjoyed not having Costa so far this season. Enter Sturridge perhaps? 8% ownership sounds good to me.

Anybody else considering the same thing?

Exactly, Chelsea have good midfield options in Fab and Haz. Liverpool have Sterling but he's been playing out wide where he's less effective.

Coleman. When Coleman was out, Baines attacked even more than usual with a more defensive 3. I'm hoping the equivalent is true for Coleman. Either way I wanted him anyway. Was going to double up

Just leave it if it is just the 1 week . Any keeper you get for a hit will need a clean sheet to get your money back. Unless he is confirmed out for a few weeks then maybe

Neither of them are nailed on. Poch doesn't seem to know his best formation, keeps on tinkering between 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 which doesn't help

Surely he doesn't have the personnel to play 442 though, unless he used Townsend more regularly?

Their most recent lineup was a 442 yes, but it failed miserably. This is what it was from the position map more or less

        ----------- Kane
        -------------------Chadli
        Eriksen Mason .-- Townsend
        ---------------Capoue

This was the 4-2-3-1... He took off Townsend at around the hour mark (I think) and bought on Ade, who is woefully out of form himself... I would stay clear of both at the moment

      Consider Caulker.

      - set piece threat
      - LEI and BUR suck at defending set pieces
      - QPR are good at home
      - he's a season-low 4.7 now

It depends how much you'd lose on Baines.

I got him at 7.0 so I probably wouldn't be selling.

Caulkers stats for threat are up there with the best. Good fixtures and good price. Reckon he's the winner.

Are Dummett and Yun nailed on? If yes, then for how long do you reckon have they sealed their spot?

If I'm not wrong, Santon is back ny the end of the month and Yun has to go to the Asian Cup starting 10th January

Yun is one bad game away from Traore, though he's a liability at the back so Yun should be safe, unless they go back to 3412 again.

Haven't watched enough of Newcastle to comment definitively, but Haidara, Santon, Saylor, Williamson, etc, do provide some stiff competition

if you're looking at dummett you might as well get Wisdom. Nailed on as can be (ie. hasn't missed a single minute since going to wba on loan, including preseason games.. apart from the liverpool game he was ineligible for)

She is 18 months now. I think we have made it to the cinema roughly 3 times in that period. It doesn't help being remote as well. Pretty big David Fincher fan, didn't htink it was his finest work but certainly very good.

Hi all. Long time lurker first time poster here.
Since it's really slow on here I was wondering if we could start a thread about your favourite FFS posters. You guys are all really knowledgable and I enjoy spending many of my afternoons reading through the comments here.

My favourite would be Applebonkers, I love his sense of humour. I'm also lurking a lot around this time and I must say some of the best posters from the DZ in my opinion would be Bsloebadger, Innsie and Rickardinho.

So, who are your favourite posters?

      Cheers Captain!

I have to say the one I look out for is TFF. This site comes alive when that orange pig starts to appear in the threads. He always responds with good advice as well, which not everyone does.

I think Lucy is pretty good with Saints advice, and theres acouple others who I can't remember their names off the top of my head.

Aaron Ramessi is abit of a DZ legend too. Always the first to post the risers/fallers 🙂

Is Tinkerman the one with the blog? I think it was his blog that i read a couple of days ago, with some really great posts about FPL psychology when buying and selling players and how we can get attached and biased to players rather than objective (which is what happened to me with sterling two gw's ago!)

@AR, who would you rather own in our draft league:

    A) Moreno
    B) Milner

One is nailed on, the other creates chances when he does play... I'd pick Moreno but what do you think?

    1. Aaron Ramessi - Straya
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

I'd go for Moreno too...Liverpool will eventually keep some clean sheets and he has some attacking potential...Nasri and Silva are back now so his game time will diminish a bit and also for all those chances he created very few were converted...also doesn't have a big goal threat 🙂

      1. rickardinho
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, that was my exact thinking too, along with the fact that i already have navas, so Milner would be useless in my team.

Doubt i'd find any takers in trades who want milner either. Navas is more valuable since he plays more attacking usually.

          Thanks!

Oh btw, Moreno>Caulker was one i considered asking you about... not saying i would do it but it crossed my mind. What are your thoughts on that, hypothetically, just out of curiosity?

I probably wouldn't do it because defender goals are worth 1.5x what a clean sheet is so they are pretty valuable, and Caulker has great potential for notching a couple, and will probably get the odd clean sheet...I can't see much gain in trading him for Moreno 🙂

Fair enough, good logic. I reckon Caulker will score in a couple of his next 2-3 home games.

but fwiw, Moreno has some pretty delightful attacking stats too.. like being 5th in chances created per minute for example, and 8th in crosses iirc. And that was while Liverpool were playing poorly!

Cool, thanks alot, take your time no rush.

Might I add that the player I discussed getting wouldn't necessarily be stuck in my team, I might try to package him to get an even better one still if possible. Its always important to think about trade-value, and not just stats and the usual FPL stuff. Some players are harder to get your hands on than others.

      Cheers!

I'm running with Downing-Siggy-Austin rotating through December to avoid the tough fixtures. I think some of the regulars could have some rotation issues at christmas time which is important to factor in.... worth having a good 8th forward rather than boyd

My team was looking so solid and well-covered until Baines decided to throw a spanner in the works. This GW literally the only two players I couldn't afford injury for was Baines and Clyne. ... obviously Aguero too, but atleast i'd have a decent attacker as cover, whereas with baines is a no-hoper Naylor(mci) or Wisdom(che) as the options... meh

I just brought in Sanchez for Fabregas, so it might not show in my team page i dont think 😉

          Begovic (krul)
          Baines Clyne Chambers (wisdom naylor)
          Sanchez Tadic Sterling Oscar Downing
          Aguero Pelle Austin

If Baines is out its either Coleman or Costa I'm targeting. Not convinced that Costa is essential personally.

Looks better, now. Looking to do Tadic > Siggy?

Haha, busted. Yeah thats my move, then i'll have 1.3itb which i intend to use for Chambers>Azpi potentially. I like having a strong and reliable defense with good rotation, and chambers is losing my faith in him.

However, if Baines is injured I need to replan completely, unless I just suck it up and do Baines>Coleman for a hit and then carry on according to my plan above 🙂

Decent team, that. Good luck, mate.

I intend to downgrade Courtois after this week. Had it with him, if I'm honest. Then hopefully upgrade my 5th mid and defence. Looking at this:

                Guzan Gilks
                Baines Clyne Wisdom Moore Saylor
                Sanchez ADM Siggy Chadli Diame
                Aguero Costa Sakho

                0.3 ITB.

Courtois and Albrighton > Guzan and Diame

Sets me up well for the Christmas period. Only concern is having 3 cheap defenders. I want to turn Moore into a 4.5 or something. Thoughts?

Or it could be Downing instead of Diame. But he's rising so not possible after that.

Moore > Duff is on the cards if I have money ITB.

Not a fan of dumping keepers midseason... though ofcourse i picked 2 nailed-on starters in bego and krul.

Diame is an ok pick, but i don't think his returns are sustainable... 6 shots in the box, 4 on target, and 4 goals.... probability says that will decrease... and he also plays for the 2nd worst attacking team in the league, whose two forwards (jelavic and abel) will probably suck up most of the points, with hatem and ramirez chipping in here and there too.

Robertson>Jelavic/Abel will probably be a common goal for them this season I think.

i did it for the sake of consistency. but in all fairness, if a player is injury prone, shouldn't that factor in to whether or not we buy them? Ditto for the 4YC situation, which will be another 0 😉

But yeah, he's pretty dependable, but its not like he had loads of chances vs Liverpool (as i recall he only had 1 chance) and blanked vs QPR...

You can bookmark this and hit me over the head with it later, but I wouldn't be surprised if Austin outscores Costa in the next 4 GW's.

Btw, i'm not saying i'm right, i'm just questioning the perceived order of things here... Costa -fevor seems to be in full flow, despite him only scoring 1 goal in his last 2, which is less than a long list of players

... and alot of people will then say that costa had a tough fixture in liverpool away, but these same people say that liverpools defense is shocking and that costa would tear them a new one before the game.... Something doesn't compute

There is always the perception that high value players are better. It doesn't always make it so. But constant returns are very valuable

i agree. consistent returns are very valuable, especially with captains, but im gonna captain Aguero(SWA) and Sanchez (wba) in the next two so it doesn't matter that much really not having costa.

I often prefer the non-expensive players to the over-hyped ones...

for example, my midfield is sanchez-sterling-oscar-downing-tadic... and most people will tell me i am missing a big hitter. but what they really mean is that I haven't spent enough of cash there, which i think is bollocks as those players can get the same number of points.

I do agree with this. The phrases upgrading and downgrading commonly used show this. I also beleive Austin will do well that is why I got him last week. Personally I think a front three of Austin, Aguero & Costa is difficult to beat for the next few weeks

yeah, that is probably the ideal frontline, and i'd get that on a WC for sure, but Pelle +3m to invest elsewhere could also be very valuable...

                  for example:

                  pelle+coleman vs dummet +costa.... i'd rather have pelle/coleman

I would be very surprised to be honest.

Yes Costa has his fair share of cons, injury prone, 4 YCs, etc. etc.

But I just feel that he is a player that can have a quite game and still pop up with a goal (e.g. against Arsenal or Liverpool) and he is fairly involved in most Chelsea attacks.

I wouldn't say essential, however. But most in the top 10K have him.

Hmm yeah, but pelle has been in poor form, even though he has had a fair few chances. I'm still holding onto him though, as you said I see soton scoring in all of their upcoming fixtures.

I think Austin is the next Ulloa.

Austin's stats rack up over 11 gw's though...

                  - high shots per game
                  - qpr create high number of chances per minute, especially at home and since zamora is up front as well
                  - 1st penalty taker
                  - conversion rate isn't ridiculous like ulloa's was (rather more sensible at 22% iirc)
                  - home fixtures couldn't be better

and alot of other things i went into detail on last night on here. 🙂

In my opinion. The trick is not to get them straight away let them adapt then jump on. People like Holt did well in their first season in the PL, just not straight away. If they come up don't perform immediatley people who took a punt will sell and then you have a bargain

its nothing too special so far.. but i think he will be getting good points soon. and he only blank 2 times (1 just coming back from injury..and another against city away)

      aguero record b4 spurs: 6,6,2,6,2,8,7...followed by 19...then 2, 8 and then 13

can see that taking fpl points into account alone ( i know kun is more involved in games, bps, penalty)
aguero only has 2 big haul..other than that its just consistently getting points

worth 11m definitely imo..better than those who is trying to cover with hazard who costs 10m alone

tadic is not a good option imo..just that kind fixtures..nice price range..looks good in matches swing it for him...and we all know that 8-0 match is a 1 off, more like sunderland give up thus leading to the 1 goal 4 assists. i gave him up straight after his 1st blank since the 23pts haul.

costa is consistent..tadic is not..which is probably why many wants to captain costa. the fact that he is very involved in chelsea's goals mean that he has great potential..

and we all believe that chelsea is likely to score more goals than soton who has tough fixtures coming up (of cos we could be proven wrong! thus i advice at least wait till we see the city match b4 we decide what to do with soton players)

for me when i consider players there are many factors..and one of it is whether there are alternatives.

pelle is getting involved in most soton's goals..while tadic creates chance which is not converted..so it makes pelle a better option than tadic fpl wise. will u still want pelle+tadic? tadic is a promise but no delivery for fpl points.

on the other hand, cheaper options like mane, siggy, downing, chadli are all doing better than tadic..will u be able to resist these players and keep faith with tadic?

aguero is the only guy that u will want from city..there is no replacement..nor there is any better striker than him..and we all need captain options..and i m sure i will not captain tadic

Okay , count how many goals Chelsea have scored and how many QPR have scored.
Mind the sample is just 11 games, the difference is gonna only increase.

Just a tit bit, Chelsea scored 6 at Goodison in which Costa scored a hatty, QPR can never do that.

All said, Austin is pure value.
But Costa is a big hitter, he is someone who is gonna score 25 goals this season.

Cant compare them both unless Austin does the same.

I feel sorry for pochetino. It is just my opinion but I believe the spurs players dislike his hardworking approach and aren't trying anywhere near their best. Sure, it is poch's job to motivate them, but I expect he is appalled at their attitudes. The way he got Southampton players fighting and pressing, sprinting and also playing technically good football was built on the foundation of young, hardworking players or those who had tasted lower league football and appreciated their status in the premier league.

Koeman is fantastic and improving it further, but I still think that core of Davis, Schneiderlin, cork and Wanyama (whichever are playing at any given time) in midfield are what makes it possible.

Wouldn't waste a FT on Sakho. You chose Sakho, so stick with him. he could easily outscore Austin, there really isn't much in it tbh, i just prefered austin for the pens and a couple of other reasons (downing clash for example)

I think you should have Downing in your team. He's playing far too well to be ignored at that price. Set pieces too for one of the teams that have most attempts on those 😉

Yay or nay on the first lot of proposed transfers? (Downing in)

i think i said i wasn't a fan of mid-season GK changes, especially one that is starting for a good team.

Best looking route here if Baines is out for a while?

    A) GW12: Baines -> Ivanovic
    GW13: Chadli & Pelle -> Sterling & Austin

    B) GW12: Baines -> Caulker/Naylor
    GW13: Chadli & Pelle -> Sterling & Bony

    C) GW12: Baines -> Caulker/Naylor
    GW13: Chadli & Pelle -> Downing & Sturridge

    Krul, Elliot
    Baines, Chambers, Wisdom, Hutton, Yun
    Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy, Chadli, Albrighton
    Aguero, Costa, Pelle

I wouldn't panic. Wait and see if you need to transfer him out just do the one transfer I am sure he will not be that injured and you will be able to get him in again. Or do a straight swap to Coleman

Cheers - I did look at Coleman, but I think that whilst him and Ivanovic are similar attacking wise, i feel CHE have the better CS chances in the coming weeks

Colemans figures I think suggest he is a better option than the Chelsea options. They have been defensively weak so far

            So have EVE though....

Ivanovic edges Coleman in the comparison tool also

            Both good options though imo

True. But do not forget that Coleman out performed every defender last season including Baines

out of those i like B with Naylor, would’ve liked more an Azpi/Terry, Downing, Bony option

Is a Chelsea defender a must have this term?

      Definitely not thus far.

Fixtures improving though so I think they could be a good buy now

If I could afford one, it would be my first defensive option.
