Scout Scribbles – Van Persie Inspires Dutch Demolition

Robin van Persie recovers from a knock to spearhead Holland’s win over Latvia. Daley Blind is forced off for the Dutch as fears of knee ligament damage escalate, Asmir Begovic turns out for Bosnia after overcoming a groin complaint, whilst Sunderland and Newcastle have injury concerns over Steven Fletcher and Mehdi Abeid respectively as we edge towards the weekend deadline.

VAN PERSIE ON TARGET IN HOLLAND ROUT

Robin Van Persie recovered from a knock to start for the Netherlands in their Euro Qualifier thrashing of Latvia last night. The Man United forward opened the scoring before providing two assists as the home team ran out 6-0 winners.

The Scout Says: Whilst he’s only scored once in his last five outings with United, Van Persie will be buoyed by yesterday’s display and, despite the potential return of Radamel Falcao from injury, the 12.4-valued Dutchman now looks poised to retain his starting role for the trip to Arsenal’s porous defence this weekend. Two promising home fixtures follow the Gunners clash (HUL, STO) and Van Persie will be hoping to prove worthy of selection over the Colombian to Louis van Gaal, though unless he steps up his output significantly, there’s still no chance the Dutchman will persuade Fantasy managers to overlook Diego Costa and/or Sergio Aguero in the premium bracket. Encouragingly for United, Van Persie sits third amongst forwards for shots inside the box in the last four Gameweeks – only Aguero and Graziano Pelle have managed more – underlining the fact that his team-mates are still handing him chances aplenty to get amongst the goals.

Blind Panic for Van Gaal

Van Persie’s club team-mate Daley Blind was withdrawn after 20 minutes of the Latvia encounter with a knee injury. Post-match, Netherlands’ coach Guus Hiddink was rather pessimistic over the United midfielder’s prospects:

“It doesn’t look good. I think it’s his medial ligament. It could be a strain, but it could also be a tear.”

Later, Blind took to Twitter to celebrate the victory, though remained vague over the extent of his injury:

“I’m proud of my 25 games for the Dutch national team, but I’m so gutted with my injury… I’ll stay positive and will come back stronger! Nevertheless a great win, 6-0!”

The Scout Says: With Michael Carrick also a doubt for the weekend trip to Arsenal after suffering a groin problem in training with England, Van Gaal’s issues in central midfield continue to build. The United boss has recently deployed a 4-1-4-1 set up with Blind in front of the back-four but the suspension of Chris Smalling saw the Dutchman partner Paddy McNair in central defence last time out, with Carrick taking on the screening role. If both miss out, Van Gaal could turn to Ander Herrera for the first time since he was replaced at half-time by Marouane Fellaini against Everton in Gameweek 8, though Darren Fletcher is perhaps a more industrious option. Van Gaal could, yet again, change tactics to deal with the situation but, having admitted he’s tinkered with his system “too much”, he may be reluctant to restructure yet again. With the likes of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Marcos Rojo all still sidelined, Blind’s likely absence could see Smalling and McNair face up to Alexis Sanchez at the Emirates, then – a situation which will raise hopes of a profitable Gameweek 12 amongst the Chilean’s growing band of owners.

TOON FACE ABEID ABSENCE

Mehdi Abeid is likely to be sidelined for two weeks for Newcastle after injuring himself whilst in training with Algeria’s national side ahead of their African Cup of Nations tie with Ethiopia.

The Scout Says: Afforded the full 90 minutes in central midfield in each of the last two Gameweeks, Abeid’s defensive duties in front of the back-four have been pivotal to the Magpies’ recent turnaround in resilience . His ball-winning ability has helped his side chalk up clean sheets in both of those fixtures, and with Cheick Tiote also a doubt for Gameweek 9 clash with QPR with a calf complaint, they may now struggle to maintain their recent defensive showings. One option for Alan Pardew would be to move Moussa Sissoko from his recent role in “the hole” to a deeper position, and this would, of course, seriously diminish the potential of the 5.8-priced Senegal international just when he was beginning to win us over as a feasible differential pick.

BEGOVIC TURNS OUT FOR BOSNIA

Stoke’s Asmir Begovic overcame a groin problem in time to feature for Bosnia yesterday in their 3-0 loss to Israel.

The Scout Says: With the Potters’ backline having only kept two clean sheets all season, it seems quite remarkable that the 4.9-valued Begovic currently boasts a higher ownership than West Brom’s Ben Foster or Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski, who have managed four and five shutouts respectively. Begovic does, at least, offer his owners a potentially profitable home clash with Burnley in Gameweek 12, though Stoke’s fixtures turn dire thereafter (liv, mun, ARS, cpl, CHE, eve) and Mark Hughes’ men are likely to continue to struggle for further defensive returns. With that schedule in mind, the 7.5%-owned stopper is likely to be sold on by a number of Fantasy managers over the coming weeks.

FLETCHER FORCED OUT OF ENGLAND ENCOUNTER

Sunderland are sweating on the extent of the ankle injury picked up by Steven Fletcher on Friday, after Scotland manager Gordon Strachan confirmed that the forward will miss his side’s friendly against England tomorrow evening.

The Scout Says: With four goals, an assist and six bonus points accrued in his last five appearances for Sunderland, it would be fair to say that Fletcher’s contribution could prove vital for the Black Cats’ ambitions this season, and given his injury history, this recent setback will come as a real concern. The Scot played a part in five of his side’s seven goals across that five-Gameweek period, and without his presence at the spearhead of their attack, Gus Poyet’s side may even struggle to find a way through a Leicester defence next weekend that has conceded in ten of their eleven outings so far this campaign. Connor Wickham will likely be trusted to take up Fletcher’s central position, though Jozy Altidore may also be in contention for what would be his first start of the season. However, with the schedule turning poor from Gameweek 13 onwards (CHE, MCI, liv, WHM, new) few will be considering any of Wearsiders’ attacking assets anyway.

Hey guys, you might want to try to get in touch or sharing your CV's with headhunters, and making a linkedin page if you haven't already (and make it up to date and as detailed as possible. These guys get commission from helping you find a job and might be able to connect you with more opportunities quicker than you could on your own!

There's an entire industry dedicated to job placing and headhunting and they're pretty relentless in finding candidates (I'm always being contacted by various headhunters on linkedin for example, mainly due to having a detailed profile).

If I can give you a tip, don't just accept the first job that comes your way out of desperation. The opportunity cost of choosing a job that you don't like instead of being patient can be much more burdensome in the long-run than not having a job for another couple of months.

I graduated with a 2:1 English degree from a red brick University just over 2 years ago and didn't get a job for 3 months or so. When I did get one, it was a badly paid admin job, which I stuck at for close to a year. I had to leave Liverpool and move to London to get any real, well paid work in September 2013, and I am not working in a field that I ever thought I would be (recruitment wasn't my plan when I started an English degree - I thought I'd be the next Fitzgerald by now).

It's tough out there, but you'll get something if you stick at it.

    So I have Foster (Mannone)

Was planning to do Mannone -> Krul this week with a FT but avoiding it now due to Newcastle injuries.

Should i save FT and just play Foster at Chelsea or make a trade to another 4.5 keeper? If so, who would you recommend to rotate well with Foster? My defence is Baines, Bertrand, Chambers (Moore, Hutton) so want to avoid any double ups there.

Good point. I'll rely on Foster for the next few gameweeks as I have other prioritising trades (rather than trading in a keeper who may or may not get a CS) and then see who the best option is. Thanks.

              I have no idea.

              Forster

              Bertrand, Baines, Chambers, Naylor, Hutton.

Was going to do Bertrand to Colo to play Colo, Baines, and Hutton. Now I may ditch Chambers as I'm not due to play him until December, when Kos and Debuchy may be back. That'll leave me with Bertrand, Baines, and Hutton (if he makes it), plus Chambers replacement if one of them doesn't.

The battle is almost won, darkness is fading and next gameweek is getting closer and closer….and then, forget Prozac, FPL is all you need!

    41 days including
    9 gameweeks
    20 gamedays
2 gameweeks with all matches played at same day (26.12. + 1.1.)
1 gameweek missing just one match (Liverpool – Swansea)

And even if you choose wrong captain, if there’s going to be some postponements, injuries to your players, red cards, missed penalties or your team is just not performing well…next gameweek is always near to help you!

    Topic of discussion:

Would you prefer if bonus points were awarded:
    A) The current system
    B) MOTM etc

This is my first season so its abit hard to tell. I think there needs to be as much objectivity as possible so the current system seems reasonable enough to me. Perhaps the weightings of certain factors need to be adjusted somewhat though.

For example, Sanchez getting 3baps against Swansea was a bit weird, considering he had only 1 shot at goal and 2 touches in the box all game. A goal shouldn't automatically give you the baps unless your other stats are good too. The gulf in bps for goals by strikers/mids/defs is a bit to big as well imo.

The whole scoring system is shite and has always been. My problem is that som players that are among the best in the world at the job they do week in and week out aint viable options due to lack of points being awarded for their job. I'm speaking of defensive mids.

      1. davies
        • 9 Years

The good thing about B) is that it rewards DM's for their job if they play well - making them available cheap and nailed on. Canceling out a template midfield and flood of high ownership players.

No it absotuley does not work out that way, i was not just complaining about the bonus system but about the scoring system as a whole. Even with B there is no way ppl are gonna choose real defensive mids as Mikel or even Matic ahead of those charging forward even though they might have killed the oppsing team.

    5. BeachBadger
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

I prefer B. Too often a player can be head and shoulders above everyone else and get nought to show for it. Doubly sickening when the worst player on the pitch comes out with 2pts. Or likewise when a penalty taker does nothing all game and steps up bags a peno and all 3 bps

      1. davies
        • 9 Years

It allows GK's to get BAPS more frequently, too. If they have a stormer, they deserve to pick up maximum points, imo.

Out of those two i prefer the current system, although a few seasons back there was like a jury voting on who they liked during the game. Some times they were completely out of wack, but most days they got it right. That way people who actually did well in the game (but didnt score or assist) could get bps, and people who did nothing but scored the winner wouldnt necessarily get top score.

i would prefer 3 pts awarded to 1 player who was the MOTM and thats it end of discussion, not stat related or anything, i remember a game when Liverpool beat Newcastle 5-1 but Shay Given was still my Man of the match as it couldve been 10-1 so if Given got 3 MOTM pts then id have no problems with that

Why must it be a striker? especially when Sanchez can be deployed as a striker and gets 5 points per goal rather than 4?

I have Pelle as my third sriker, just seen a lot of posts bigging up Austin. Surely he won't come anywhere near third highest scorer and the money saved won't do that much of a difference in midfield or defence.

Would rather have Pelle and Downing than say Austin and Di Maria - that's just me though.

I've been monitoring it and it's very weird case.

He's been transfered in almost 30k managers after his last rise and price prediction sites claim that he is not even near for 2nd rise, under 30 % atm.
He has very low ownership so can't understand what's going on...probably someone in fpl towers wanted to wait until after internationals to decide if he will get him in or not.

Weirdest thing is how those fpl stats and co all have same "opinnion" on this case tough.

There seems to be a minimum total (ie. actual quantity) rather than percentage of ownership rising for a player to rise, particularly the 2nd 0.1 rise in a GW.

I find the whole system really strange, with players like Sterling falling through the floor despite being owned by over 1,300,000 people, and other players drop only 0.1 or 0.2 when they see a far bigger percentage drop in ownership.

Hi guys, need some help here. Is it worth taking - 8 to swap: Cisse, tadic and pelle out for Costa, Downing and Perez?

Cisse looks to be struggling with his knee and with Ayoze on form i doubt he'll be rushed back (again).
Costa is costa and i'd rather bet on chelsea continuing theyre form than southampton tbh.
Tadic has been a disapointment with a few exeptions. what do you guys think?

Team after transfers will be: keeper: Krul/forster: defence: Jagileka, baines, Azpili, Chambers, and Neil taylor. midfield: Aarons (injured), Chadli, Downing, Fabregas, Sterling. Forwards: Ayoze, Costa and Aguero.

    gief 2 cents 🙂

Tadic out for Siggy would be sensible imo - GW 13 is good for the swans. Keep Pelle for Villa - he'll score. Personally i wouldnt be too fixated on having Costa. You have Kun + good midfield.... good team.

If he wasn't on pens, would you captain Costa instead? WBA seems easier than SWA! And overall Chelsea look much better...

Swans are light of a centre half with a rusty Amat or Bartley to fill.

Having said that the way Naylor and Williams defended last night was impressive...

You get the feeling now that Chelsea can get to 2-0 and shut up the shop - taking the opportunity to keep Costa/Haz/Fab etc. in cotton wool. Plus Remy and Drogba fit.

City minus Dzeko - still rocky at the back so likely need to score more to be safe in a game.

      One winner for me...

      Pelle!

We didnt know how soton would perform after losing half their first team squad. Newcastle losing first choice players at the back will surely affect their defensive returns

Certainly think of beefing up the midfield and getting some Chelsea in - depends how much game time you think Barkley will get. I've moved Tadic on but maybe hold for Villa (a) then ship..
