Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 26 – The Weak

We turn our attentions to the upcoming schedule this lunchtime and cast an eye over the next four-to-six Gameweeks. We begin by looking at the teams with tough fixtures to follow, with the bottom two bracing themselves for some testing times ahead.

Burnley

“frisking

Firmly ensconced in the bottom three ahead of tonight’s clash with United, Sean Dyche’s side face a tough task to climb to safety over the next few matches in light of a thoroughly evil schedule. The Clarets make their way to Chelsea, Liverpool and Southampton in the next six and with home encounters against City and Spurs also on the horizon, this leaves just the visit of Swansea as a possible source of points.

Over the last six Gameweeks, though, Dyche’s side have been one of the most consistent sides in the final third – scoring at least twice in five of those fixtures. Danny Ings and Ashley Barnes owners will surely be thinking twice now, though, whilst George Boyd looks confined to bench-warming duties for the foreseeable future.

Liverpool

“frisking

Last night’s thrilling 3-2 win over Tottenham extended the Reds’ unbeaten run to nine league matches since moving to a 3-4-2-1 system. Brendan Rodgers’ side have the form, then, but the fixtures are very much against them – Southampton, City, United and Arsenal in the next six may stall their quest for a top four finish.

With four clean sheets in the last five, though, the likes of Martin Skrtel and Alberto Moreno have thrived in their manager’s new formation, whilst Daniel Sturridge’s return to action has already harvested a goal and two assists in three appearances. It remains to be seen whether Raheem Sterling will be sidelined for any period of time after missing out against Spurs and his 30% ownership won’t hang about if his prognosis is pessimistic.

Leicester

“frisking

Nigel Pearson faces a tough task to arrest a run of four straight losses over the next few matches. Trips to Everton, City and Spurs in the next five, allied with a blank Gameweek 27, leaves only a home clash with Hull as reason for optimism at the King Power right now.

Their schedule could be subject to change, though. It’s possible that if Leicester are beaten by Villa in the FA Cup this weekend, they could –potentially- be handed a double Gameweek 28. The downside is that this would see them travel to the Etihad before facing Chelsea – a pair of fixtures that few, if any, Fantasy managers would be willing to invest in. Pearson’s decision to move to five at the back and bench Marcin Wasilewski ended a run of 15 straight starts for the cut-price Pole, though Jeffrey Schlupp continues to be fielded as an out of position prospect on the left wing. At 4.9, Riyad Mahrez is one to consider in the budget bracket and has offered plenty of threat in recent outings, though Pearson’s tinkering up top leaves us with no real options to consider.

Also Be Wary Of…

Crystal Palace
After this evening’s encounter with former club Newcastle is out of the road, Alan Pardew braces himself for a schedule that pits Palace against five of the current top ten in the next six Gameweeks.

The 2-1 home win over Spurs highlighted their form under the new man in charge and with three league wins in four, they’ll feel they can prevail against the likes of Arsenal, West Ham, Southampton, Stoke and City over that period. Jason Puncheon and Dwight Gayle have been subject to plenty of new investment on the back of their recent returns but with the likes of Yannick Bolasie back in the frame, rotation could start to kick in and many may feel that now is the time to bail on their Eagles’ assets.

Newcastle
John Carver has steadied the ship in recent weeks and earned four points from showdowns with Hull and Stoke. Unfortunately for the Magpies, the schedule takes a significant turn for the worse now – City, United, Everton, Arsenal and a trip to neighbours Sunderland await them in the next six, leaving just the visit of Villa as the one bright spot on the horizon.

With that run of fixtures in mind, it looks highly debatable whether Jack Colback can be expected to maintain the form that has served up three goals and two assists in his last six, whilst a defence that has registered a single clean sheet in 12 Gameweeks seems unlikely to improve any time soon.

Man United
The Red Devils go head-to-head with Burnley this evening on the back of one defeat in 14 Gameweeks but that record papers over the cracks. With Louis van Gaal tinkering with tactics and personnel all too often, United have lacked any sort of cohesion and have failed to take advantage of some excellent recent fixtures.

United may have the fourth best scoring record in the league but their main men are toiling. Robin van Persie is their top scorer with nine strikes yet has netted twice in his last six, whilst Wayne Rooney is second most impressive with eight goals, despite the fact he’s failed to produce any attacking returns in his previous six appearances. Considering that Angel di Maria has failed to score since Gameweek 7, it’s perhaps no surprise that David de Gea is their highest scoring FPL player, with 94 points. Showdowns against Swansea, Spurs and Liverpool in the next five affords the Spaniard the chance to earn points yet again as Van Gaal looks to keep his side’s bid for a fourth place finish intact.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

It was one of those weeks where alot of the logical moves didn't pan out...there's been a few of those this season. QPR deciding to get their only away victory on a week where many decided to double up on the Sunderland defence was particularly galling for many.

I think though that overall if you stick to the sensible decisions and throw in a couple of differential moves then you should do well.

Have kinda tried that, but Doolittle nailed it for me.

        1. 50/50 calls end up in the wrong half.
        2. Captain choice wrong almost very GW.

        Yea indeed Jonty..

This week has been a real rank changer for all of us I think, be it good or bad. I was fortunately on the good side.

Alot of thing went my way including Ozil(c), Walters auto subbed for Ings etc and ended up scoring 88 this week and 129 overall GW rank. My overall rank has jumped from 101K to 39K.

Had a great first half to the season but gradually slipped since then. Nothing too bad, and my rank is still good, but I seem to be getting all of my 50/50 decisions wrong, particularly captaincy.

I've had 4 or 5 tough captaincy choices where I've picked the player that's blanked, and the other has racked up a big score (taking the armband off Austin for his hat trick, and Sanchez for his 19 pointer against Stoke, spring to mind).

Your 20K which is a good rank. It's hard to move forward at that rank. One week up one week down unless a huge differential pays off.

One of the big issus this season has been new choices to make and the end of the old guard.

Rooney, Gerrard's days as FPL players are over.

Plus there are new choices with Kane now putting in the performance of a 12m striker. Peolpe are still adjusting to him being a player you can't bench and should captain. Why did so few of us captain him against Liverpool? If he was Aguero or Sanchez would we have captained him in that game? Maybe not, but it would have at least been seriously considered. Its an example of a new way of thinking for a lot of us.

I've had one incredible gameweek gwk 8...complete season changer...but if it wasn't for that I'd have a pretty low rank. Since then at best my weeks have been ok at worst terrible with those 50/50s going the wrong way more often. I've never known a more season defining week than gwk 8 this season and I will forever thank it for saving my season from what it is really - a little bit meh.

See what you mean but you've had a fair few good gameweeks to be honest Jonty!
8, 14, 16 and 23. If those kind of game week rankings occurred while you were lower down you would have rocketed up as well. You need those sub 50K gw ranks to stay in the top 5K I'd say.

I think alot of us are one exceptional gameweek away from glory wherever our rank is . I've had alot of sub 1m gameweeks though and those two sub 2m ones were hard to swallow.

Alot of the gameweek ranks though are about the top 10K and the overall one. My conciously templatey 10K team doesn't fall much in a bad gameweek due to everyone around me in the same boat. It's a dull tactic but works.

Kane still isn't in the Aguero/Sanchez, or Suarez/RVP at their peak league. He is having a fantastic run, but many of us are still unsure about whether he can maintain it with the consistency that the aforementioned players can (I know Sanchez is new to the league as well, but he's in a different class).

I also think Liverpool away was a tough fixture, he didn't have many chances, and his goal could have been disallowed.

This is a prime example of the mindset we need to get out of. This season the prices are all over the shop because of the transition. Rooney is a 7m mid, Kane a 12m striker in reality. Kane is on a good run but that's all we want from our heavy hitters too. Costa had a great run, then he lost it, then he got it back again.

A good example is the latest scout picks ...so far the community and I have done pretty good...but we were very below budget to get that. As I say we need different mindsets this season regarding pricing and expectations from prices.

The real big hitters - Aguero, Sanchez and, often, Hazard, have been consistently excellent, I've just captained them all at the wrong time! I had your mindset when captaining Austin a couple of times, and was tempted by Defoe last night. Austin blanked twice, as did Defoe. I see what you're saying, but Kane is the exception. Budget players are usually budget for a reason.

Definitely, managed to plummet from 1.8k to 60K in 8 GW's. Pulling it back a little bit last few weeks but still struggling. My highest captain score in the last 8 GW's has been 5..the rest have all been lower. Dire times 🙁

I feel like I've done well in spite of rather than due to captaincy.

Jonty is right - the plum fixtures (particularly Man City at home) have failed to deliver. The so called minnows are putting up good fights away from home not rolling over (bar the odd exception like ARS V AV last week). It is harder to call games and clean sheets are a particular lottery.

Man C v Stoke and Man C v Hull were in FPL terms two of the biggest upsets all season. Completely unexpected. I'd back the same players again in an instant but as you say these odd results are really not helping us.

It's been an intensely frustration season for me. Every time I do the logical thing I seem to get a scenario like last night, and every time I take a last minute punt it seems to work out. Plus my captain choices have been truly dreadful. I must have captained hazard, kun and alexis over 15 times and caught none of their big scores. The only good captain I had all season was a punt on angel early on.

I'm fed up with Arsenal this season.. Having no luck with their players! In December I sold Sanchez when his stats were dropping as Giroud returned, only for Giroud to get a red card when I bought him and Sanchez to score 19 points.. then I bought Sanchez and he immediately got a blank and a hamstring-injury. Turned my head to Cazorla that scored double-digit for 3-4 weeks straight, only to be followed by 2 blanks.. my only "luck" have been owning Walcott for the last 3 GWs.. Now I'm sitting with Walcott + Cazorla.. any tips for what I should aim for? Walcott + Ozil better or Caz + Ozil? Or stay put?

    Thanks..

I'm just getting a little addicted tbh. Checking my phone constantly for scores/injury updates/bonus point updates etc even when I'm out in social situations is a little worrying imo. Also for my work I need to be very self motivated and FPL is not a good distraction (i.e I should be working now and not on here! ;))

Once you play this game the days of cheering on one club are gone and hating the rest in a boyish manner.

Its a lot like poker but without the stakes.

You set your stall out after taking in all the information - then hope the odds work out. They do in the long run but you have to go through a lot of lows with bad luck.

When it gets too bad you don't actually spot your good luck anymore and just focus on the bad...

Last night I was very much on the brink. Even during good weeks, you don't revel in the 80 points, you chastise yourself for the 6 you left on the bench. When you rise to 5k, you think you could've been 4.8k. When you choose a captain that scores 6, you regret not going with your guy who scored 8. The amount of joy I gain from it seems to be declining.

You have to look at this game with a long eye or else it ruins football...not enhances it. There's a very good reason why I take a hit a week and that's the fact this game will always remain fun for me as I write off OR in exchange for constantly changing my team...and I'll never change that. My only goal is to beat my pts total for last season when I did the same thing, and if not...oh, hum...

I have asked a few times if anybody would be interested in a mini league where everybody takes a hit a week but nobody ever takes up the offer....

Yeah - the ML I set up has about 6 father-sons in it and become more of a battle between them than the top of it!

While I understand some people take it very seriously it does leave me a bit cold. We need obsessives to fight diseases or combat evil, not play Fantasy Football.

I have no doubt that this week I will end up getting Costa...not because he is a better pick than Aguroe, he isn't (especially with a blank coming up), but because my lad will have Aguero to my Costa....and that's just spiffing...and fun...

What's tough for me this season is knowing if I had picked my captains better, as in had fewer than the countless fails I've had, I'd be close to 10k. Frequently I've had a really decent performance that would have been excellent if I'd captain not even the player who scored most but just one of my players who didn't fail.

That's one of the points of the January Wildcard League - if the first half of the season hasn't gone too well then you can at least try to win the second half.

Come to think of it, that's probably why FPL introduced the January Wildcard in the first place!

This concept of picking better captains is such a red herring. What can you do different? Just pick who you fancy to get best score. If it goes wrong that's the luck of the game not a case of you should have done better

I'm not saying I should have done better, you've got me wrong.

What I am saying is that 70% of the matches this season I have picked a captain who has gotten 0,1 or 2 points, which has simply been desperately unlucky (at least compared to previous seasons).

So it's more just a pain knowing that my team has mostly been sound but I've had nothing but bad times with captaincy, that's all.

I'm in the same boat. Stellar squad week in and week out. And, while I most often have placed the captain's armband on such players as Aguero, Sanchez and Hazard, I seem to be getting them for all the wrong games, even when the games seem so good on paper. It's been brutal.

Sho 'nuff I did! Thanks.....I think....ha ha. The synopsis seems to show that I haven't done quite as poorly with captains as I thought, yet still poor enough so as to not be getting a ton of joy out of them. Either way, 92 points in hits probably isn't the best tactic....although, they have sometimes paid off. Every season I tell myself to calm it down on those....yet I just can't help myself!

Thanks all for your sincerity and honesty.
Without wanting to state the obvious It seems most on here are serious about doing well and there's nothing wrong with that, and it seems most on here feel Fpl may sometimes cause them to cross a line but it's only temporary.
To summarise I think most agree about playing the game your own way and funding that life/work/leisure balance, some do this better than other while for some (like me) it's 'work in progress'.
      Thanks again.

It's like being a professional gambler , make your decisions based on logic and after that it's out of your hands. If you're having a bad run, it's inevitable but stay objective.

As an experienced fpl player, If it's affecting your mood, give up imo. Not worth the time.

Why so serious? You get out of the game what you put into it. If I'm bored I'll come check these forums out, it makes the weekend football more interesting (Hull v Villa anyone?) Yeah I can get annoyed if my captain blanks or I lose a clean sheet in the last second but it doesn't last long.

I always pick the team and bring in the players that I think will do the best on a gameweek. Then it's out of my hands so why worry about it?

If you're having this anxiety about fantasy football I advise you don't start betting on matches!

Depends on what you hope to gain from playing. I readjusted my expectations a couple of seasons back when everything went against me practically all season. I no longer invest the amount of time I once did and Ive learnt to take it on the chin rather than let a captain failure ruin my weekend.

No one is ever going to be great at this all the time (even someone who has had 5 good years could still have a 6th poor one quite easily), but taking it too seriously can actually count against you.

Ive also seen a lot of folk struggle after doing really well and then not so well afterwards. Expectations of their own performance too high.

Prime example of your second point in effect right now, my captaincy decisions last two Gameweeks after pouring through stats and forums posts etc have been Sanchez this week and Aguero last week.

My flatmate has forgotten to change his team for 3 weeks and has had Hazard captain both times, battered me last week and probably gonna do it again tonight.

Some of this is a lottery so yes, less can be more

I am with you, haven't been that close to it for months. Every year I seem to fade off after Christmas - season is too long for me to maintain a high level of commitment.

Don't know if it happens every year, but last few months seem to have been full of average scores and few differentials.
      Really struggling to keep interested.

The gambling warning slogan should apply here too: When the fun stops, stop.

Yes, no money changes hands (unless you play other forms of the game). But FPL is addictive in a strange way - a combination of how Facebook took off at universities (dopamine rewards for events that don't matter anywhere else, in this case gathering points) and why sports betting is so huge (a vested interest in an adrenaline-fuelled match.

You can spend hours staring at your squad and tinkering with it even if you know it's all without point, because it's fun to play with stats and place yourself against everyone else in the world. But if it is ruining your actual enjoyment of football, and - as someone said on here earlier - affecting your real life, you should stop.

Some great points still coming in on how guys feel about/approach Fpl.
Some of you are comparing Fpl players to hardened gamblers when in fact we've never backed a horse played the lotto etc but have a love of football and maybe this is how some feel after a bad week, we think we are 'entitled' to a good score because of the time/information we invest in our squads but these points alone dont give us probably the points we feel may deserve, normal guys are starting to experience how gamblers are feeling through sites like Fpl without money ever exchanging hands, somebody mentioned Facebook and the likes (even Candycrush has become a household game)where people constantly refresh to see if they may have missed something going on in the world, there's no getting away from the fact that 'online' games like Fpl have become 'addictive' and part of our daily lives.
It's a different world we in today with the advent of high speed internet and technology, where it all takes us is a different conversation but one thing is for sure there's no getting away from it, fail to jump on the bandwagon and you will be left behind so it seems.

Just got in and read through this brilliant thread! Hardly ever post here, but FF addict for 7 yrs and crap score every season- loads of hits and punts. The way I see it is it keeps me out of the bookies, so it's a tame placebo instead of wasting money! But yeah, it don't really matter...

All things considered the decision of how much time you would like to invest in order to enjoy your fantasy football team could not be more of a first world problem.

This year I've found myself doing better than in years past. I'm absolutely cruising my cash MLs so have instead switched my focus to OR for the first time...and its just less fun.

I'm now constantly looking at the Top 10k average, looking at the what their template it, the transfers in etc. It was much more fun when I just had a few rivals and we were second guessing eachother, blissfully unaware of our 'terrible' OR ranks.

For me the last 2 gameweeks have definitely been the hardest gameweeks of my 3 seasons playing FPL. The main thing that angers is me is that sometimes (seemingly all the time recently) however much time you spend on your squad, it still doesnt work out. You can be completely up to date with football knowledge and make all of the logical/statistically sound decisions, then your rival once again does better than you, when you know that they forgot to change their captain/had no idea about the latest injuries for example. And it rides on that basic principle that putting alot of effort and hard work in to something that doesnt pay off is completely gut wrenching and makes you feel like it was all in vain.

And that is why being 'in-the-know' can only get you so far and sometimes actually be a hinderance. Because as we all know, good fortune is the other key ingrediant to this wonderful game.

However I definitely think these last few weeks have taught me a lesson that you can only do your best, and to stay confident with the decisions you make, the rest is in the hands of the almighty fantasy football gods.

100%, xmas this year rather than the annual FPL festival just felt like far too much fpl and dare i say just became too much. think it's quite natural when you're deeply into something for so long to have care-wobbles.
also depends why you first started playing in the first place, for example i first played when i stopped playing football myself. now i'm playing again i care a lot less, there's no need to replace the buzz of scoring a goal which your captain scoring did actually come quite close to doing

Early season is where it's at. The thrill like unwrapping christmas presents seeing all the players to chose from and their different prices, expectation of which teams will over achieve etc. And the WC to play.

My mini-league just runs til xmas cos most people get bored of it by then. The thrill has worn off replaced with thoughts like 'Why did I ever think Balotelli was a good idea?'
WC has largely been scraped and the gap between top and bottom of the league might as well be a canyon.

There is definitely a lull post january. Mini-leagues are mostly wrapped up and it becomes a slog to move anywhere in rank. Up or down it seems, though it's def easier to slide down 😉

All these naval gazing posts of late are bringing me down.

For me Fpl is some light relief squeezed into my few minutes of downtime between kids and work. This is my daily commute. I don't want to check my work emails

The games not got worse, like any scene / hobby it's got to add to your life otherwise why are you doing it. Good on Evs for realising it's his time to move on

Any funny stories from last nights deadline?

I was talking to a girl I know at the bar at 7.10pm, thinking 'how the hell do I get out of this'. Kept trying to close it off but no success.

Conversation ended at 7.15pm when someone called her and it was relief as I logged on through my phone!

Too risky to go with this defense?

    Panti
    Bellerín Cameron PvA
    Özil Hazard Sánchez Yaya
    Agüero Kane Sturridge

    Krul Boyd Bruce Wisdom
