Scout Scribbles – Silva Back in Training for City

David Silva returns to training for City after scans allay fears over his facial injury. Tottenham’s Kyle Walker is sidelined for another four weeks, Stephen Ireland recovers from a weekend knock for Stoke, whilst Roberto Martinez is confident over the availability of James McCarthy and Leon Osman as Everton prepare to host United.

Silva returns to City training

David Silva returned to training on Tuesday morning after tests revealed that he hadn’t fractured his cheekbone during Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over West Ham United.

The Scout Says: Manager Manuel Pellegrini will provide a further update on the Spanish playmaker’s health in his Friday press conference, but the signs are very promising that Silva will be available to face Aston Villa on Saturday after being given the all-clear. Regardless, with over 102,000 sales already this week in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Silva has clearly been earmarked as the fall guy in many Fantasy managers’ squads as they attempt to draft in Liverpool’s and Chelsea’s high-priced attacking midfielders ahead of their double Gameweek 34. In light of injury concerns over Daniel Sturridge and the Blues’ strike trio stripping us off any strong forward options this double, the sale of Silva would finance moves for the likes of Raheem Sterling (8.5) and Cesc Fabregas (9.4). Despite the favourable match-up against the Villains on the weekend, Silva’s 23% ownership might be worried that the former Valencia star’s goal threat seems to have dropped off recently- he’s failed to produce a single shot on target in the last two Gameweeks since a move back to 4-4-1-1.

Toffees optimistic on midfield pair

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is confident that both James McCarthy and Leon Osman can shake off their respective knocks in time for a home time against Manchester United this weekend. The Spanish head coach is more cautious on Steven Pienaar’s chances of making the Red Devils clash, implying that it will be touch-and-go for the South African:

“He [McCarthy] has reacted very well. For the first 48 hours after a knock like that it is important to see how the ankle recovers. The treatment has had a positive response so I expect James to join the group later in the week. If he can get through the two or three sessions before the game then that will be a good sign. We need to make sure he is 100 per cent but at the moment the way the ankle has reacted is positive. Knowing James, I do feel that he is going to be available for the squad. Steven Pienaar wasn’t 100 per cent and again we are going to keep a close eye on him. Leon Osman has had a very good session today [Tuesday], so I don’t think he is going to have a problem for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: Martinez will be loath to disrupt the momentum of his midfield by altering the personnel, so news of McCarthy’s speedy recovery will be music to his ears. Having switched to a 4-1-4-1 set-up in their last two matches, the Toffees have struck a perfect balance between attack and defence, notching the most goal attempts on any side (33) while conceding the third fewest (10) shots inside the box. Osman’s return to action presents Kevin Mirallas with competition for starts on the left flank, with the latter’s goal on the weekend holding him in good stead as Martinez’ men look to continue their five-match unbeaten against Louis van Gaal’s side. With Goodison encounters against Sunderland and Spurs, allied with trips to Villa and West Ham still to follow, the Toffees look poised to continue their strong form over the final few fixtures.

Walker ruled out for four weeks

Kyle Walker is expected to be sidelined for a further four weeks with a foot injury he sustained during Tottenham Hotspur’s Gameweek 31 fixture against Burnley.

The Scout Says: Walker’s latest prognosis more or less rules him out of the remainder of the campaign, paving the way for a defensive reshuffle for the run-in. Federico Fazio could be set to earn a handful of starts at centre-back as Eric Dier shifts over to right-back, though Mauricio Pochettino also has Vlad Chiriches and January acquisition DeAndre Yedlin as options for their trip to Southampton. As a whole, Spurs’ defence has provided little to cheer about on the Fantasy front this term, with the Lilywhites recording just two cleans sheets in their last 14 outings and a paltry total of seven shut-outs across the entire season – which is less than double that of Saints (15). Danny Rose (5.0) leads the way with his 3.3 points per game average, tallying two goals and three assists in his previous 13 starts. With three away matches (sou, sto, eve) and a trip to Manchester City in Spurs’ final five league ties, few managers will be eyeing up Rose for their three-man rearguards, with owners perhaps looking for a way out after he limped off at Newcastle on Sunday.

Ireland back in training ahead of Saints clash

Stephen Ireland trained on Tuesday after picking up a knock in Stoke City’s 2-1 win over Southampton, while Marc Muniesa will know the results of his hamstring scan at the end of week, according to assistant manager Mark Bowen:

The Scout Says: In the absence of Chelsea loanee Victor Moses, Stoke’s midfielders have stepped up in recent weeks. Charlie Adam has doubled his haul for the campaign in the last three Gameweeks, netting a spectacular 50-yard effort against Chelsea and securing the winner against Southampton last time out after replacing Ireland at the break. Marko Arnautovic, meanwhile, registered in a 1-1 draw at West Ham, whilst Jon Walters has provided two assists in the last three Gameweeks. Showdowns with Sunderland, Swansea and Burnley in the next four offer Mark Hughes’ side the chance to finish the season strongly but the Potters remain very much under the radar due to the upcoming double Gameweeks.

i assumed he would play but so unlikely he will get a much bigger score than Sterling whereas Sterling could get a cricket score so that was my reasoning for the move plus QPR next week is a huge carrot

I was kind of hoping his injury would force me into Silva to Sterling. Now I have to use my brain, and that never ends well.

    Pick one?

A: Silva (AVL, tot) +4 point and Vardy (NEW)
B: Coutinho (wba, hul,QPR) and Giroud (hul)

I would go B, and that's why I am likely to do Silva out for a hit.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Don't forget Gameweek 35.

Are we getting so caught up in Gameweek 34 double gameweek fever that we are forgetting about the next Gameweek and beyond.

What are your plans to get a good score in Gameweek 35 rather than only Gameweek 34?

For example I'm planning on leaving enough in the bank to switch Remy to Giroud as I think against Hull and for the rest of the run in he looks key.

Because Liverpool have a strong fixture in GW35 and I already have Giroud and Bellerin I'm in no rush to make any changes. In fact I'll likely save a transfer.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester (sadly) having decent fixtures in GW35 makes this a piece of cake in my eyes. My team should look good on paper - will probably fall apart around my ears but I'll have the nice pre-GW period of contentment that comes from a lot of nice fixtures.

Will have one off Giroud/Øzil/Ramsey over GW34 to save FT. The real conundrum is whether to keep Silva or not - if keeping an Arsenal mid, there's no room for him at the inn.
Liverpool and Chelase players are ok to keep.

This is a big concern for me as I play the #1 team in my ML in GW35. If I win, then I will move into first! I'm not too concerned with maximizing DGW players because they do not have a WC, and I'm happy enough with my OR. My plan will be to include Sanchez in my WC, and then will likely do Remy -> Giroud in GW35. It means I'll have to hold onto 2 LIV mids, but think that will be OK.

Playing around with my WC team. Thoughts on this lot?

    Kasper
    Ivan. Terry. Skrtel
    Hazard. Sanchez. Sterling. Coutinho.
    Aguero. Vardy. Kane

    Subs. Panti. Boyd. Duff. PvA

Gives me 8 dgw players with Sanchez , PvA and panti already in place for gw37

very close to mine above ...
I got rid of sanchez upgraded bench and put in extra chelsea mid...
Rather then keep sanchez took in debuchy & caz to ease the loss..
Still I like although with saving the wildcard alllllll season I wanted 9 dgw players for maximum effect

There's a case to be made for both being benched this week, I can't see either scoring heavily, especially Sanchez, we all know what Chelsea defence and to an equal extent, Southampton's defence. At least Cambiasso has a second game... tough though

Having patience and saving your WC for later in the season always seems like the Holy Grail but, in reality, late WC's can be a pain in the arse.

They usually result in mediocre returns vs your pre-WC team and your changes suddenly give your ML rival "differentials" in Sanchez, Mané, Silva and Kane.

In the end, you find that you've screwed up a good season right at the end with no time to correct your mistakes.

That was my initial thought but it does help in other ways.

For example - last week I made no transfers (even though my team probably needed them) because I was saving transfers for the DGW. Wildcarders didn't have that problem.

Same goes for GW37 - I currently only have Bellerin who needs to go. Wildcarders can set up for GW37 and still get to make transfers inbetween.

It helps more than just for this single (or double!) game week.

Yeah there are a few other advantages but overall not for me. I got a decent 11 last week and can get 6 top dgwers with only -4, then at least 4 dgwers without taking a hit forbthe next one

It all depends on the individual team etc.

There's plenty on here flaunting their wildcard when they're way back in rank so potentially could have made better use of it earlier in the season.

I'm having my best season ever having used mine in GW3 but I can never get past GW4 without using it so nothing has changed there and my rank was much different last year.

It's weird that the wildcard actually seems like an annoyance at the start - something I have to get rid of. I'm hoping to change that next season but don't hold out much hope.

        I'm the opposite, I guess.

A lot of people will have had their WC intact but also had a decent team and 2FT's to bring in a couple of DGW players but also retaining the Sanchez's, the Silva's and the Kane's etc.

I don't know. I just a feeling of impending doom.

I agree. Ultimately this DGW isn't as ideal as WCers would like it to be. Most non wilder carders will have 3 Liverpool and 3 Chelsea anyway so the only thing you gain is Leicester players.

There is a swing in fixtures and the teams that have them at this point, the only anonymily is that Arsensl blank followed by Chelsea (1-1) and then an upturn in fixt, also bar Chelsea liverpools fixtures are good.
          3 Chelsea - Standard
          2/3 pool - desirable
          2/3 - Leicester - looks good/bench able
3 - arsenal after Chelsea looks essential.
          Panti/Pva - for 37, Why not?
Easily done on a WC, not as easy on FT.

My WC team will have 3 Chelsea, 3 Liverpool and 2 Leicester and will include Silva and Kane. I will get Sanchez in GW36 or GW37. I think I'll be just fine!

The reason I didn't use it until now is because I didn't need it. If I needed it earlier then I would have used it.

I don't really understand your argument.

      - Keep the best players
      - Improve your other 10 player slots

There are no weaknesses in having a wildcard right now. None.

      The only questions are:

      1. Can you maximise the benefit?
      2. Will it be worth more now than having used it early in the season?

    So, here's a quiz question:

If Giroud averages 2.73 SiB's and 3.68 Total Shots per 90 with 55% accuracy, does a DGW striker with 2.26 SiBs, 3.46 Total Shots and 52% accuracy strike you as a realistic captain contender?

Why should it be ignored? It's a good post highlighting a DGW option that almost nobody has mentioned. The stats seem a bit more generous than the ones I'm looking at but as I mention below this is true for Giroud's numbers as well as N'Doye's so the thrust of the post is valid.

It hasn't made me immediately scrap my WC plans but it's made me go and check a few alternatives which can only be a good thing.

I just wanted comments based on the stats. Then Jonty asked for a showreel. Having looked at one today I obliged. Then my little quiz was hulked. 🙁

Ah well. Very few will take him I'm sure. As for whether I'll captain him I'll probably decide on Saturday. Hazard, Sterling, Skrtel and N'Doye are the options I'm considering.

He has 0.2% ownership so if he gets a decent score this week it will be a good differential. No need to captain him imo

If Hull start scoring and that's a big if, he's the best bet to be involved. Considered Hernandez but na...

Yep, I think having him and he does well is enough of a boost so no need to captain. If I hadn't already thrown my lot in with Remy I'd consider N'Doye I must admit. At least one Hull player will do well in Gwk 34.

Since N'Doye arrived he has played over 60 minutes in 7 games. Those games have been AVL, QPR, stk, SUN, lei, CHE, swa and sot where half of them are extremely good fixtures and ones where you would expect a player to register a high number of shots in the box. Hull do not score that many goals and their DGW fixtures aren't the best.
Crystal Palace have only conceded more than one in the league 2 times in the last 11 games and Liverpool have been very solid at the back since the start of the year after they changed formation. He could be a good punt for this week but if you're going to put the armband on him expecting him to score big points compared to some of the other captain options you are deluded.

        Thank you so much.

I asked a question about the stats above. I didn't ask you to take any other variables into account, I am perfectly capable of doing that for myself. And I only named the player because Jonty asked (I won't make that mistake again).

This "deluded" type of comment is why I try not to post my ideas on here so much now. I was called deluded when I said dump Sanchez in GW22. 8 GWs later people were catching up and talking about losing him just at the time when I was considering getting him back.

I was called deluded when I wrote about avoiding the Aguero bandwagon in GW21. I was called deluded when I suggested Kane could be dropped a few weeks ago - and now people are catching up with that too.

So I have no interest whatsoever what you, or people like you, believe to be deluded. You manage your team and I will manage mine.

Deluded was maybe the wrong word to use and possibly unfair. I think there's a lot of merit in thinking outside of the box and some of the moves you suggested above were logical and had some solid reasoning behind them. With N'Doye though I don't see it happening and was just trying to give a counter argument to the main post.

Well, the OP was just a question. I got drawn into explaining more fully but I hadn't intended that. He is one of 4 captaincy contenders I am considering but he will certainly be in my team.

But what about his conversion rate? I wouldn't base any decision just on the 3 stats that you mention without also taking other factors into account.

N'Doye has had attacking returns in 3 home matches (against AVL, QPR and SUN), but none in his other home match (CHE) or in any of his 5 away matches (at MCI, STK, LEI, SWA and SOU).

His two matches in DGW34 are away against CRY and home to LIV. He is unlikely to score in either of these (against CRY because it's away, or against LIV because they are now keeping plenty of clean sheets). He might possibly outscore Giroud this GW, but to expect him to score more than Hazard would be optimistic in the extreme!

I think that's a bit harsh, splitting his games home and away like that, to try and tell us that he won't score over 180 minutes of a fairly decent away fixture, and a tough but not impossible home one.

Why is that harsh? Many (but not all) players have better form at home than away, and the opposition in his home matches was not significantly weaker at home than in his away matches.

Would you not split Hull's form in home and away matches either?
Hull have scored 17 goals in their 15 home matches, failing to score 5 times,
but have scored only 12 goals in 18 away matches, failing to score 9 times.

In their last 9 matches (since N'Doye joined) Hull scored 7 goals in the 4 homes, with no failures to score, but they only twice in the 5 away matches, failing to score 3 times.

And I didn't say that N'Doye definitely wouldn't score (although I don't expect him to, and would be absolutely amazed if he gets more than one - although stranger things have happened, but not often) - I just said that it would be extremely optimistic to expect him to get more points than Hazard.

Personally I think N'Doye has done reasonably since joining the Premier League, and that Hull easily have it in them to play better than the last few weeks.

PS If were to really be petty, I could say it took Hazard 10 away games before he got a goal in one, and both his games are away. 😆

Yes, but Hazard's away record has improved out of all recognition since then, whereas N'Doye's returns have deteriorated after a promising start and he has now blanked 4 times in a row.

(I am prepared to change my opinion if Hull start attacking more in their away matches and N'Doye starts scoring away goals, but as things stand I think there are better options)

I know, but you are saying N'Doye can't score away, because he hasn't scored in 5 away games, and can't score at home because Liverpool. Seen as Hazard took till his 10th away game of the season to register a goal, you can see why I think it is harsh. 😀

          2. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

This is exactly the point. You say N'Doye's returns have deteriorated and imply that's because his form (or Hull's form) has dropped. But he has been getting close to Giroud's levels for SiB's and Shots per 90 and beating Benteke. So maybe he has been unlucky whilst Benteke and Giroud have been more lucky.

As for conversion ability, 24 goals in 44 Europa League and Champions League games answers that I think. He's a very good player with an excellent European record.

It's easy to say "Hull don't create chances" or "N'Doye can't score away" but the statistics don't support those conclusions. Hull will have had 2 weeks to prepare for Palace. Maybe Bruce will send them out to defend. But I think he will send them out to attack (especially having seen what WBA did) and it could end up being a goalfest. If it is I'd bank on N'Doye scoring one or two.

Who knows. But trying to assess what kind of games the DGW players will be involved in and how they may be approached tactically by the teams is part of this I think.

Thanks for the reply, Ruth. Perhaps I ought to reconsider whether to include him in my WC squad, though I think captaining him would be a step too far.

As you say, there is a possibility that Hull might decide to try attacking more away like they do at home. And the match against Liverpool appears to be a case of a near irresistible force against an almost immovable object, so who knows which will prevail?

Hull are fighting for their lives, same as Leicester, same as Burnley, same as QPR, same as Sunderland...

Leicester and QPR will attack, that is quite clear now.

Burnley and Sunderland will probably try to be solid and nick a win. Their managers seem to prefer that approach (though it could change).

Hull? I just don't know. But I think they will go for it. Their run-in is too hard to try to defend their way to points. Basically the must beat Palace and they must beat Burnley. If they do they are probably safe.

Don't worry about the naysayers, sometimes there is a lot of groupthink, and some people take it very personally if you criticise their opinions. I think N'Doye is a great option for the DGW, and of the ones that are definitely fit the best DGW striker, but I wouldn't captain him.

Let's be honest, you wouldn't captain N'Doye over Hazard in a single game week, and if it wasn't for the double you probably wouldn't even buy N'Doye.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years

The last part is half true. I'd consider N'Doye a feasible cheapie striker with Palace (a) and Burnley (h) in the next 3 GWs. But normally I wouldn't captain him over Hazard.

The thing is that Hazard has Arsenal (a) and Leicester (a). I think the Arsenal game will be very tight. Fabregas will play 10 and I have a sneaking suspicion that if Chelsea score it will be him. I wouldn't be surprised with a Hazard blank anyhow. Then Leicester - well Hazard is very tired (by his own admission) and if Chelsea are 2-0 up after 60 he could come off. He could even be rested (though most on here will scoff at that). I'm not certain about Hazard as a captain although the positives are considerable.

Sterling, Fabregas and Skrtel are other options. All have merits and demerits. In that context N'Doye seems worth thinking about, which is what I am doing.

I have to admit that I think Hull will play well and scores 3-4 goals this DGW. They have rested for 2 weeks and fight for surviving. I'll pick one Hull player for sure, N'Dolye is the most likely. Cheers

    Hi Guys,

What would you think about the following WC team?

    Schmeichel (Heaton)

Terry, Ivanovic, Skrtel (Van Aanholt, Bellerin)

    Cambiasso, Sterling, Henderson, Hazard (Boyd)

    Vardy, Kane, Aguero

with 5.9 in the bank for Arsenal players or should I just get Giroud for Kane now?

In january I was told by the scoutcast that Silva will blank and blank again, but makes up for it with his hauls.
His goals are almost always worth 8points, as his involvement in the game makes him prime for bonus

ultimately I agree with you and I'll be holding Silva. Still, his stats over the last 2 games is concerning when for me its a choice of Silva or Sterling.

A lot earlier than that I think you'll find 😉 people probably would have been better off with the likes of Benteke no doubt.

If you catch the right one, there will undoubtedly always be one that scores more than your player on the day but I feel that people are less reluctant to sell and feel prone to make hits before wildcards as if therw were goalprophets and assistmachines coming for a special event. The reality is that two of four (henserson fabregas sterling couinho) will likely blank and get 4points and half of the people here will be amazed and in shambles.
Over the next rounds Silva has more to play for than Chelsea(who will be over the line in 3) and pool (who wont have a Chance in 3weeks anymore) and has good fixtures. No doubt there will be 442 games and 4411 games a like and Silva will be floating around as he does anyway.

I don't have a problem with spotting signs early rather than waiting till its intolerably obvious. In many ways I wish I sold Aguero or Kane earlier when the signs were there and bought in Benteke when the early signs were there. Its one way to get ahead of the game but thats the nature of risk taking.

The change in formation is key to Silva's output.

With Milner out, Nasri out, Silva will be the main playmaker

        He is 'the one' anyway

Because Milner and Nasri are usually the main playmakers.....ok then

does anyone think bellerin has a chance of playing both games in the dgw? He may retain his place as he hasn't done badly.

I do think there's a chance but not enough to keep him.

I can't see it if Debuchy came straight back in at the weekend. If I had him I'd probably hold and see what happens but I would plan on bringing him in.

He came straight back in because Bellerin has been playing through ankle pain lately

cant see kane (sou MCY stk HUL eve) outscoring vardy (bur CHE NEW SOU sun QPR)

but just sooo scared of that ownership.. should be making transfers based on potential not ownership....what are peoples thoughts on the move

the vardy move also means i get rambo a week early so i get ramsey (HUL) rather than henderson (QPR)

I'm kind of leaning the same way you are but I'm also scared shitless.

Vardy or Kane for the rest of the season? Consider that Vardy is cheaper and frees up cash for Arsenal players.

Kane could easily outscore Vardy. I would make that transfer if you're chasing and genuinely believe that Vardy will come good. If you're top of your ML or want to preserve overall rank it's too risky in my opinion

'Hmmm missleading: the game' as in 'the premierleague'. I watched too much The Wire it seems.
Created more chances than anyone else in the last 6 --would have been enough

    Steady Eddy scorers all season:
Hazard, Sanchez, Giroud, Siva, Aguero, Ivan, Terry,Henderson Soton Defenders etc.
Why do people think That having 6 of these players of which can be manipulated into DGW sides without a widcard are not as good as the also ran DGW players?
No doubt a WC is handy, but not the be all and end all!
