Good point. Can still see Hazard and Fabregas stealing them most matches though.

On the other hand, Costa can be so dangerous. May be silly to go without...

Stoke are building a nice little squad, especially in attack. Konoplyanka is highly rated and could be a great option in FPL teams next season.

Not bad for a free signing. A squad player though I suspect who will need to fight for a regular starting spot. There are a few decent wing options for Stoke now

Looks like Ings is signing by the sounds of it and Rodgers is keen on tekkers still so there will be decent backup. Origi too. Borini and Lambert to be shown the door I presume. Balotelli might be harder to offload 😕

Borini was shown the door last summer. Sunderland, wasn't it? He dug his heels in. I would do for that paycheck.
Mario will be bought by an Italian team, probably on the cheap.

I think Ings is young enough that he could be sold on if he doesn't settle.

I don't like the Benteke target. He isn't versatile, is he? Seems to demand a certain setup in order to thrive. I feel like I'm missing something.

      I think it should be:

      Sterling -- Coutinho -- Lallana
      ------------- Sturridge ---------------

Coutinho in the hole will be dangerous

True definite option that. I just think Can has to play in midfield. He's a class act.
Coutinho I've backed for a long time. So much quality. I expect him to step it up again next season and become a real star. For us and Brazil

Can is more box to box, we need a proper DM if Lucas is going, Clyne is average and isn't needed, Skrtel should be gone, but probably won't unfortunately. The problem I have is they're interested in signing a backup/someone to challenge Mig instead of a top class keeper, and probably won't pickup up a top Striker either. :/

Wages apparently aren't the issue, the owners will pay them happily, and the squad will be trimmed down to about 25-30 players. I honestly believe we can do better. :/ Can't see it happening though, we're signed on for more mediocrity.

I'm not saying that, Higuain could be barely possible, and I think a young DM with lots of potential could be brought in, we should aim higher than Ings for me and Benteke would be an absolute disaster for us. Goalkeeper would be the hardest to get.

A top keeper better than Ings will be hard to come by. Everyone is after a top striker too so that won't be easy. Ings might be your lot there but at least he's young

Mignolet has proved his quality in the last few months and will keep improving for years. Remember some of reinas dodgy moments early on. I'd like another young keeper like Marshall. Competition for the Jersey improves both imo.

Pedro would walk into that Liverpool team. He is so underrated. Whenever he played this season for Barca, he has been good.
He is quick , good with both feet, clever with his movement and a team player.

Mind it's a lot easier to look good playing for Barca in La Liga, he works hard and has great pace, but he isn't needed, he's a decent player, but I wouldn't have him personally.

Skrtel is fine, he just needs to be in a CB pair, not in a 3-defender setup.
Even if Sakho-Lovren were the scheme, Europa = we need depth. Skrtel is still great on his day. How many times have we seen him with a bandaged head? He gives his all, and will be back to his old self now that STevie won't be there to leave him exposed.

        1. Licky
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 11 months ago

Skrtel flatters to deceive, he's rash, poor in the air, drops too deep and worst of all has no communication, whatsoever, this is a major, major concern, it means the defense can't act as a cohesive unit, and the other defenders struggle to play effectively alongside him. He's a real disaster, constantly playing players onside, tugging shirts, and doing unexpected things at the worst of times.

          1. Pepereina Pizza
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

He didn't score 7 goals last season with his feet, did he? He's a bit better than poor in the air.

Fewer fouls committed this season, compared with last.
6 yellows last season. 8 this season. He may be pulling shirts, but who let the ball get as far as he did? Joe "awful" Allen and ol' Steve.

Blaming Allen and Stevie doesn't exempt him from his failures, he tugs shirts as a resort because he gets bullied easily defensively, a resort because he can't defend crosses or set pieces well thus isn't great in the air. Skrtel is a massive liability, unfortunately BR loves him so he'll continue to get played. :/

I'd have Skrtel well ahead of Lovren and Toure. Sakho looks better when he's playing for France than he does playing for Liverpool imo

                Tugging shirts isn't a stat.
It doesn't even result in more fouls or YC's, as you can see.

Are you after aesthetic, or results?

You may not like the defense (for formation reasons?) but I can't see why it has much to do with Skrtel or Mignolet.
They're not ideal, but I don't see how shaking dice on new players and unknown quantities will improve that.

I never said we should 'shake dice on new players' we have far better CBs in Ilori and Toure to partner Sakho. The stats there don't mean anything in relation to what I'm saying, his goalscoring record and YCs have nothing to do with his rashness, or lack of communication, he very rarely gets caught with the tugging surprisingly.

                    Insufferable Licky,
Ilori is better than Skrtel ? You are desperate, and off your rocker. And wrong, to boot.

You say you want Skrtel gone. You either want no replacement for him, or you do. You either think the team are better with him, or without him. Which is it?

His intangible shirt-tugs and communication-lack-of and "rashness" translate to... what, exactly?
                    It isn't more yellows.
                    It isn't fewer clean sheets.
                    It isn't more goals allowed.

You are making innuendo from nothing. Take a breath, pal.

and BTW, please name a few of the exemplary CB's in the PL who never tug shirts.

In 36 PL matches in 2013/14:
              50 goals conceded
              8 clean sheets

In 33 PL matches this season:
              33 goals conceded
              12 clean sheets

If the team knew how to score goals, Skrtel wouldn't be on your radar at all.
              Nor would Mignolet.

No. Pretty sure he would be. The team did better defensively the season before because we pressed opponents higher and didn't allow them to create, Mignolet is a liability because his distribution is poor and he has no command of his area despite being a good shot stopper. Statistics don't ell the whole story of something, especially when they are broader than just focusing on Skrtel.

actually, the stats throw cold water on your self-loathing Skrtel innuendo.

The team allowed fewer goals this season than last, despite everything you cite as problems with Skrtel: lack of communication, shirt tugging and being rash?

Seems to me Skrtel should be *encouraged* to do all of these things, since, by your estimation, it is what he has been so good at, and yet his defense has allowed fewer goals, he has been carded fewer times, and he has needed to commit fewer fouls to achieve this.

I'm all done giving you chase. Your supernova of self-loathing will burn out, and I hope it's soon because your team needs your support.

Was considering Powers to Shipp and Dempsey to Maidana. Should I do Mulholland to Piatti/LeToux/Finlay OR Torres to Higuain/Aristeguieta?
          Current attack:
          Dempsey, Feilhaber, Pontius, Mulholland, Powers
          Kamara, Arrieta, Torres
PS. Where did you finish in ESPN fantasy and how is your MLS fantasy going on?

Definitely get rid of Mulholland, and Torres. Also Brad Evans got called up for USMNT so lose him.

            Evans to Polster/Larentowicz/Ciman

I prefer Finlay over Piatti over LeToux in that order

Shipp is a great move since Maloney got called up for Scotland so he will be the center of CHI attack and on all set pieces.

Higuain and Kamara may be too much CLB attack so I'd say Aristeguieta (two home games and he avgs 3.2 spg 2.4 spg in the box)

Arrieta might start since Rolfe is suspended so may be worth to keep him.

Had a terrible 2nd half in ESPN so finished around ~96% 🙁

And as far as MLS goes, I've had a decent last couple of weeks, up to 644 overall.

Remember free WC next round so you can destroy your team this week no problem.

            Did I miss anything? 😆

Thanks! Already have Polster, defense will be Frei, Polster, Mears and Gargan which isn't bad I guess?
After doing Mulholland to Shipp, attack will be:
              Pontius, Feilhaber, Shipp, xxx, xxx
              Kamara, Arrieta, xxx
So, only 2 more spots left.
              A) Torres to Aristeguieta
              B) Dempsey to Maidana/Finlay/Piatti
              C) Powers to Maidana/Finlay/Piatti

Oops didn't see Polster on your bench.

Also forgot to mention that everything in Philly goes through Maidana and is probably locked for ~180. Also on all set pieces.

Aristeguieta might not play 90 both games. Make sure he is in the starting lineup tom before you bring him in.

Many are brining in Piatti since he is MTL #10 and on all set pieces. Don't see anything wrong with bringing him in this week either.

If you can keep Demps and just do Powers to Finlay/Piatti/Maidana you can roll with a 3-5-2.

Really your call on which one though, like I said I prefer Finlay but the other two are solid options as well. I just trust CLB over PHI and MTL, who are both pretty unpredictable/inconsistent.

He is a big hitter though, can go off at anytime plus I don't own Rivero so wanted some sort of VAN attack option. On setpieces, PKs and everything runs through him. He is expensive though, risking it for Demps since he has a double.

Plus Mrs Dempsey is expecting a baby this week so there is doubt over his availability, hence why he didnt get called up for US.

Still think he will play though

Did some simple calculation and it predicted 2CSs for Seattle and only 1 goal, so went with triple Seattle and captaincy.
Hamid will get atleast 10pts, so worth a risk. If Kamara is rested for 1 of the games, then you might be winner! Its risky for sure...

Notes to self based on previous GW1 fails:

    1. Do not put any new signings in the team.
    2. Do not pay any attention to pre-season
    3. Do not go for the biggest bandwagons on here, particularly if related to points 1 and/ or 2

In fact. Why am I here? 😀

I think it's true with people like van Wolfswinkel, but with proven world class players it's different, particularly when it's someone with PL experience like Fabregas. If, say, Benzema came over here, he'd probably be straight in my team.

What should be reconsidered maybe midfielder classifcations - there's been a few posts on 2 types of midfielders and different scoring mechanisms for each. That would be a big change to the game's dynamics and perhaps FPL towers isn't ready for it...yet.

Although I agree with the general view of Rafa being a downgrade on Ancelotti, I do actually think that Rafa could surprise a lot of people and do a decent job at Real.

His track record is decent and he knows La Liga.

It will all ultimately come down to whether he can get the big names on side and performing for him.

He could well do a good job, he's a good manager; the issue is the ridiculous merry-go-round at Madrid. Ancelotti won the Champions League last year, straight out the door the next season. What will be enough for Rafa? The double every season? Del Bosque won 2 Champions Leagues and 2 La Ligas in 4 years and that wasn't enough, Pellegrini got 96 points in his first season and was dismissed immediately - the whole thing is a joke.

So apparently De Gea to Madrid is almost done. The way that club is run I wouldn't be surprised if he wants out soon enough. Especially with Benitez in charge now.

Seems like United wants Bale in an exchange deal. I would rather have Varane though, someone United really needs.

We need to put out foot down and demand a player from them. Bale/Varane preferable. But...

@GuillemBalague: So today, 12pm UK, Benitez will be presented to the press. 3 year deal. Verane, Bale, Ronaldo will stay at the club. De Gea still the dream.

This is exactlly what I think. Demand Bale or Varane in return or don't sell De Gea. I would much rather lose him for free next year than sell him for the fee currently suggested around 25m if we don't get anything in return.

The one season with De Gea in goal will be worth more than the fee we'll be getting for him and besides, he will see what a wreck Madrid is next season and hopefully decide against going there and sign a new contract. Here's an ideal scenario. 😉

We definitely need to play hardball.

We have been good to Madrid over the years and it is about time we stopped having our pants pulled down on the prices of outgoing stars.

We should be demanding £40m for De Gea - if that is the figure being talked about for Sterling he is easily worth as much and the contractual situation is similar.

United don't need to sell De Gea this summer. The demand from Real is greater than the desire/necessity to sell from United, hence the price should be hiked.

Dortmund have already made a similar stance to Bayern with Lewandowski and kept him for one year extra before letting him go for free.

United could do the same with De Gea.

i'm not saying that Utd need to sell De Gea, just that Sterling and De Gea are in different situations in relation to their clubs. Utd can keep an unhappy player against his wishes, which may affect his performances next season, or sell him for around £20mil this summer. Utd really aren't in that strong a position given that there is only 1 year remaining on his contract. Player power is greater than club power these days

I agree - ultimately if De Gea wants to go, he will go. United just need to make sure they play it hardball and say ok, but you will go at this price, or not at all.

How clubs allow assets like De Gea to get to 1 year left on a contract is beyond me!

They honestly do. It's between letting de Gea for £25m this summer or letting him go for free next summer. Very similar to the RvP situation and we know what most clubs would do. £25m less essentially means Manu would have to sell an additional Mata/Herrera as well as losing de Gea in order to recoup that sum next summer.

Not really. United have the money and an additional 20 or 25m won't make much of a difference to their transfer plans. With Falcao off the payroll and Adidas deal, United has finances. It needs the best players to get to the top.

Manu's Adidas deal is 70m per season. Many other clubs have similar deals. Chelsea, for example, has a deal with Yokohama worth 55m per season. Plus Manu has not sold any players for significant sums in ages, essentially making the sponsorship deal Manu's only source of income which really is rather minute as compared to other big clubs. To make up for the 150m spent last summer and probably another 150m this summer, Manu will have to sell a shed load to generate funds. Letting go of 25m really means buying one star name fewer or a bigger name player leaving the club.

United needs an experienced CB that can help in the development of their young CBs

Not many available though. Hummels was one but he seems like he'll stay. No other options out there that are better than Varane.

If I was a world class player (I'm just slightly below world class), there is absolutely no way I would ever join Madrid. Booed by the fans whenever you have a bad game, players sold to accommodate the next shiny plaything, hierarchy is an absolute joke. They chew up and spit out players, nothing is ever good enough for them.

Take Bale: winner in the Copa Del Rey final and scored a decisive goal in the Champions League final in his first season. Not enough, booed constantly this year. Nothing is enough at that club.

Agreed completely. The club has become an absolute joke. I think it's the 'home' factor that's been key to persuade DDG.

I think the issue with Bale is that the fans expect Ronaldo Mk II - i.e. a goal a game, which obviously hasn't happened.

15 in 27 in his debut season in a new league is nothing to be sniffed at. No one can be the new Ronaldo in that side, Ronaldo won't allow it. Bale's confidence is clearly shattered now.

Benitez has been tasked with bringing out the best in Bale.

Indeed, was very surprised to see it. Surely something behind the scenes happened between the election and his resignation?

I assume some of the piggies the FBI picked up squealed and Blatter was told to resign or we'll nail you to the wall too.

    So, wildcard strategy.

    A) Pick a GW1 squad with a longterm plan and plan to wildcard only when necessary (late if possible)

    B) Pick a GW1 squad with a very short term plan (Load up on best players for GW1-3) and wildcard early, picking up the nailed on cheap mids, defs etc and jumping on some early bandwagons.

      C) Pick a GW1 with a core group of standout performers which you will keep for long, have a flexible team structure for the rest which you fill with players with good fixtures...then move the latter on for value picks and/or bandwagons.

oh and save the wildcard for later if possible

Holding on to the WC is going to be at a premium next season. I suspect with the Euros being played in the summer that the FA Cup QFs will cause postponements (which is different to the season just gone). So one (or maybe more) bumper DGWs towards the end of the season.

o/ I tend to get bored by the end. I managed to last the distance this year mainly due to the CWC game probably. We need more end of season comps IMO.

I must admit that yes, I am.

Although I love the game I do think that sometimes it impinges on my enjoyment of the "real life" match as I find myself watching it in FPL terms rather than simply for what it is!

I did prefer watching football last year when I wasn't playing FPL, and it was really nice watching the FA Cup final and appreciating the football without being concerned about which Arsenal attackers were getting the points.

The problem with FPL is that when you have Giroud in your team, and Walcott scores a hat trick, you love it and hate it simultaneously.

Aye, im the same. I watch CL and internationals for enjoyment but the PL is all about FPL. Key example being the Chelsea v Spurs match I had Terry rival had Kane. I bloody hated that game when it was probably a great one for a neutral.

It's always good to have a break, it can get a bit exhausting/interest can wane after 38 games. I've still not got back into full workday mindset, instead of pondering transfers (shown by the fact that I'm on here).

realized i was more productive at work during FPL season. Finished work and assignments factoring in FPL pondering time.

Without FPL...I have much more free time at work now 😆

So If De Gea leaves United, who is his best replacement?

I think Lloris would be good or Forster

Forster?! He's nowhere near the level.

tbh Valdes is a decent enough replacement, but I'd definitely take Lloris if Spurs would sell him for less than 30m

Valdes is useless...I said Forster because he is young and can adapt his game United way

I would prefer Cech if Mourinho allows it. Otherwise, yes Lloris is a good option.
