Team of the Season – Charlie Austin

After scoring 43 goals in two seasons before gaining promotion with Queens Park Rangers, Charlie Austin wasted no time in settling into life in the Premier League. The former bricklayer set the foundations for a successful campaign early on and sustained a decent momentum throughout, keeping the R’s survival bid alive for a number of months with his cool-headed finishing.

The Statistics

Despite netting in two of his first six starts, the 6.0-priced Austin shed over 25,000 owners in the opening eight Gameweeks, with the R’s falling to defeats in all but two of those match-ups. A run of four goals in three fixtures from Gameweek Nine – including unforgiving encounters against Chelsea and Manchester City – elevated his standing in the Fantasy sphere and encouraged 400,000 managers to snap up the former Burnley frontman in the following Gameweeks.

Austin then went on to bag six goals in as many outings from Gameweek 13 onwards. A hat-trick at home to West Brom in Gameweek 17 marked the pinnacle of his campaign and triggered an upsurge in investment, with over 550,000 managers drafting him in over the next three weeks. This upturn in form saw Austin’s value recover from its initial depreciation and rise to a season high of 6.5 by Gameweek 22. From that point on, Austin delivered sporadic attacking returns, notching five goals in his remaining 17 starts. Consequently, the Reading youth product lost owners in all subsequent Gameweeks bar those surrounding QPR’s doubles.

All said and done, Austin charted eighth in the overall total score rankings with 176 points, with Robert Green the nearest contender for QPR on 114 points. By virtue of his 18 goals and eight assists, Austin was directly involved in 62% of the London club’s 42 league strikes. Furthermore, his goal tally positioned him fourth in the scoring charts, behind Sergio Aguero (26), Harry Kane (21) and Diego Costa (20), while only Jamie Vardy (12) and Aguero (10) mustered more assists amongst forwards.

Austin posted the tenth-highest points per game (ppg) average (5.0) of any player in the league and sat second only to Harry Kane amongst outfield players in terms of value.

Notwithstanding the calibre of QPR’s supporting cast, Austin still managed to fashion 130 attempts at goal throughout the season – which was second only to Aguero’s 148. Furthermore, he tallied the second-most attempts on target (52) and third-most shots inside the box (76), illustrating his potency in the final third in a superb debut season in the top-flight.

The Prospects

Austin is almost certain to be granted a move to a Premier League club in the wake of QPR’s relegation. Having ended the season as the fourth-top scorer, the Berkshire-born striker is inevitably attracting a bevy of suitors from opposing ends of the table.

After being called up to the England squad on the back of his recent showing, Austin took time out to discuss his future and hinted that he’s desperate for a return to the top-flight:

“I feel like I’ve worked hard enough this season for QPR to try to be a Premier League player, but at the moment I’ve still got a year left, so what the future holds, that’s up to the club and my agent to sort out. “I just want to be fully focussed on these next two weeks with England, but then I’ll speak to Chris and Les to tell them my thoughts and they’ll tell me theirs. It was my first Premier League season. On a personal level, if you had said to me I would end up with 18 goals, I would have said I would have been delighted with that. Unfortunately, as a team, we underachieved and my goals couldn’t help QPR stay in the league.”

With just a year left on his contract, then, it may well be that the R’s choose to cash in on Austin as they look to strengthen their squad after relegation. The forward’s displays have certainly kept him in demand, with the likes of Newcastle, Southampton, Aston Villa and Spurs all linked with a move for his services.

Although a switch to White Hart Lane would be less appealing for Fantasy managers, given Harry Kane’s security of starts as the lone striker, Austin would surely be nailed-on at Newcastle, where Papiss Cisse’s injury troubles remain a real issue. The future of Christian Benteke could also play a part in the summer transfer merry-go-round – if the big Belgian departs Villa, Tim Sherwood could move to make Austin his number one target up top. Ronald Koeman could also consider Austin for a move to St Mary’s, having watched Graziano Pelle net just 9.8% of his chances (Austin converted 13.8%) and embark on a 14-match goalless spree in the middle of last season.

Austin’s potential price next term is, to a certain extent, dependant on where he ultimately ends up. A cost of 7.5 to 8.5 looks the likeliest scenario in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game for a player that has proven more than capable of picking up the points, regardless of his club’s toils.

Muslera isn't good enough for United imo and Lloris would cost 3-4 times as much as Cech plus is lacking from a distribution perspective.

Cech should be 1st choice to replace De Gea IMO.

Haha I can't argue with that, we're appalling. Bar a bit of light-hearted stick, I actually like it when Liverpool do well. Half of my family and friends are Liverpool fans, it would be ridiculous for me to wish them ill just because of some meaningless tribalism. I know people like the idea of "I bleed blue" and "born an Evertonian" etc, but realistically, I chose Everton because my Dad did. I could easily have been a Liverpool fan.

It's good when Liverpool and Everton both do well, like last season. I don't want them breaking the top 4 while we languish in the bottom half 😉

                He doesn't.

Chelsea recognise Cech's service to the club and Jose has always said that if he leaves it will be up to him where he goes. Chelsea are generally pretty good about that kind of stuff.

Whilst he's probably not quite as good as he was before his head injury, he'd be a big asset for any team.

                    Yep.

Chelsea fans would find a move to Arsenal tougher to take than a move up North I think. Whether that will influence Cech I don't know. But he'll always get a good reception at the Bridge, as Lampard did. 😕

The price is a bit steep I think in comparison to others. For instance, I think Wenger would prefer Kondogbia for 25m than Schneiderlin, as would I.

You hear the Cech story? JM will allow him to join another PL team. I think it'll be Arsenal. 😀

I'd take Schneiderlin over Kondogbia in a heartbeat. Proven BPL quality, fantastic stats and has huge influence on his team's game. Him and Matić are best DMs in England.

Konodgbia is younger and has a higher ceiling - Wenger type signing. I think Schnei is very good..but Kondogbia is more of a natural DM. Wouldn't mind either at my club.. 😀

No, imo the opposite. Schneiderlin is more of a natural DM who has just pushed his game to a greater dimension to cover the attacking positions as well. Well, Kondogbia really is originally a very defensive player too, guess they're bit similar in that. Just, Schneiderlin's role always used to be in the bottom of the midfield, before he added more attack to his game, whereas Kondogbia has always played a bit here and there.

I really like them both, to be honest, they're great talents, both of them, but I would take Schneiderlin because of his immense work ethic that allows him to develop to whatever is needed. He is just a kind of player who makes a CL winning team. Really, really underrated player. Big time. I'm less certain about Kondogbia's mentality and therefore of his development potential.

This is a huge window for Arsenal. They have 3 areas that really need strengthening, but they're 3 areas where great players are difficult to find. If (this is a huge if) they could get Cech, Schneiderlin/Kondogbia and Benzema/Lacazette, they would have a phenomenal side on paper.

Unfortunately I don't think they'll be able to pull it off.

It'd be the greatest transfer window ever if they managed that. The problem is, it's been a decade of saying "Arsenal are 2 or 3 signings away from being title contenders", and they never quite get those signings.

If Benzema stays at Madrid, their options are limited; I'm not convinced by Jackson Martinez. I could easily see them going into the season with Giroud/Walcott up front.

But the things have changed. Now they can spend money and they do. Wenger said that himself recently.

I wouldn't mind that CF department staying the same really. Not a big deal.

Also, Ospina may prove good enough. But one defensive player is needed unless Chambers ups his game and becomes the other DM.

But it would be great if they got all these three transfers.

They definitely have a squad good enough for the top 4, and I'm a fan of Giroud - I think he's a very good, much maligned, striker. I don't think they should spend big on a player that isn't really an upgrade, so I wouldn't be surprised if that stayed the same, but Benzema would be a phenomenal signing.

Same with Ospina; a good keeper, but not a De Gea/Courtois that will really win you points. Cech would be excellent.

Yes, they must not make the mistake they have before of thinking "that's enough". If Coquelin breaks his leg at the start of the season, Arsenal are screwed. They need depth.

Exactly. And nothing prevents them from playing Schneiderlin/Kondogbia _with_ Coquelin once a while, as they're both well capable to play a more attacking position and have showed that consistently.

The two together would be fantastic for big games. Against Chelsea/City, or in Europe, Coquelin and Schneiderlin/Kondogbia would be much more solid and impressive that, say, Coquelin and Cazorla.

They have adopted the one marquee signing a summer strategy so it'll take a few years for them to become the final product

One marquee signing could be enough this time, they just need a marquee striker (Benzema is arguably the only remotely realistic one). I wouldn't say Cech and Schneiderlin are marquee signings, but they'd be fantastic ones.

Can someone explain the benefit of the head coach system at Liverpool and Newcastle whereby the head coach has very little say. Is it to simply keep the powerin the hands of the board? If so, how does that system appeal to the best managers?

would a fully fit in form Jose chelsea side be able to stop a fully fit and this in form Barce side?

No, they'd need a really off-form Barca. Chelsea couldn't stop PSG, they'd have no chance against Barcelona.

To be more precise, a fully fit Chelsea side couldn't stop a PSG side with half the starting lineup suspended or injured and playing with 10 men for most of the first leg. They've got still some work to do to beat Barca.

I don't think the previous idea of Chelsea, and Mourinho, holds up any more. We always think of him having great defensive sides that break the opposition down, but when was the last time that happened against a great team? Guardiola's Barcelona absolutely schooled his Madrid side, Chelsea have struggled in Europe since he came back (and never won the CL in his first spell); Chelsea's defence actually looked shaky in the first half of this season.

You would need a monumental amount of luck to park the bus successfully against Barcelona.

It must be scary to play them. It's not like you just need Messi to have an off day, you basically need them all to. Suarez won so many games for Liverpool single handedly, as has Neymar for Brazil. Any of them could play well and destroy your side.

I said the same on the last page, that attack overshadows the rest of the team. Busquets in particular is wonderful, he's a prat but he's the best defensive midfielder in the world.

The attack saves the rest of the team that is nothing spectacular. Busquets is really good though.

E.g. last season, before they got Suarez, they didn't play particularly well. Iniesta's weaknesses were more exposed, in particular, and that defence got challenged more and it showed its weakness, and it's not really any better this year. In fact, they hardly use the new guys.

If they play well, no one at the moment. You'd need them to be off form and miss a lot of chances.

I dunno. Often they don't really get that many or that good chances. The thing is that they all - Suarez, Neymar and Messi - can score without getting good chances.

        2. Camp No No
          • 10 Years

PSG did it in group stage, Real was very close to do it in La Liga, and Bayern, too, had it working pretty well until that massive plunder to let Messi score the first goal. They're not invincible. You can beat them. But that attack line just is crazily hard to stop, you can play a wonderful match and hold them back for most of the time, but when guys like that try, and try, and try again, at some point you just make that smallest of mistakes and they take advantage on that and get the smallest of chances and then it's suddenly a goal. They don't need to dominate, they don't need to get great attacks, they don't need to have any real advantage, they just will score if they get to try it. I really hope that Allegri figures out a way to stop them.

Not a bad deal for Utd if true.

15m for a 32yr old injury prone striker who is on the wane and will definitely not be first choice next season.

Buy a Benzema or similar and keep Chicha next season.

Rooney / New St / Chicha / Wilson with Depay also capable of deputising if needed.

Murray and Djokovic on court. 58% polled by BBC, say Murray Win.

Ouch the latter is terrible form, god we're so going to get relegated...

      UNLESS...

I would think, without looking at the breakdown, that a fair few of those losses came at the end of the season when Morgan picked up that injury. At that point in the season, Morgan's absence was not the whole story. Wanyama had problems. Pelle struggled with form. Forster was injured.

There was also a period mid-season where he had an injury, and again Wanyama and a few other key players were injured.

It's nice to simplify these things into stats but it rarely is that simple.

Plus us Saints fans are no longer bothered by the scare-mongerers.

        A couple of details:

in mid-season, when Schneiderlin went missing for 4 matches, it was in a 6 match period, and you won both matches he played 1-0, including a total nullifying of ManU.

In the end of the season, Pelle actually scored a brace in the last match Schneiderlin played. So, for him, not that bad form, really.

Would be an absolute top signing.

Him, Schneiderlin, a RB + Depay would make it an excellent transfer window for us.

If DDG goes, Cech or Lloris will do just fine.

I think DDG is a super shot-stopper. But I think Petr Cech would organise the defence better and that's an attribute that is less visible. He hasn't got the PL clean sheet record for nothing. United would probably end up with a better defence with Cech there.

If he want his own man, should not he bring them at the time he was installed as manager, like CP and some of his team?

The timing is kinda suspicious tho (in regards of CP).

For FPL purposes, Costa wasn't all that. Very expensive by comparison, limited bonus points (because Haz and Fab nabbed them) and frustratingly hard to manage injury issues. None of which have anything to do with his real world quality but that's not what this is about.

Yes, except that Iniesta creates plays and scores goals and dribbles and takes set pieces and all that. But in some other aspects of the game, they do resemble each other, like in that neither one really tackles all that much, nor blocks many shots. Nor makes a great defender in general.
