The Community Round Up

Price predictions dominated much of our hot topics this week as the community continues to speculate on the upcoming domestic campaign. There was also the launch of the UEFA U21 Fantasy game to scratch that Fantasy Football itch during the summer months. Meanwhile, our community articles look ahead to Premier League sides’ prospects and look to see if a dead team, where no changes are made, could beat the carefully planned tinkerings of elite Fantasy managers. We also catch up on the latest tables being constructed in our newly-launched 2015/15 Members area.

The Community Articles

Ruth NZ has been continuing his team-by-team review and look ahead to 2015/16. Amongst those teams analysed this week include Arsenal, Europa League qualifiers Tottenham and Southampton, Swansea and Stoke, West Brom and Crystal Palace, and promoted sides Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich.

Arsenal also feature in The Sarjeant’s analysis of the top four Premier League side’s clean sheets over the last three seasons. Later in the week he also carried out this research into whether managers who were defenders in their playing days boost their team’s chance of a clean sheet.

Such analysis is vital to planning ahead and tinkering with our squads when the season is underway. However, RedLightning’s attempt to create the optimal dead team squad for 2014/15 puts our efforts to shame. He has created a Fantasy Premier League team that without any changes from Gameweek 1 until the end of the season was capable of giving winner Simon March a run for his money.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Price predictions were in full flow this week with Christina launching a discussion on the most eagerly-awaited price tags. For Licky, the cost Sergio Aguero’s will be key, while Siva Mohan is looking forward to seeing how Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez is priced after missing the 2014/15 season through injury.

In addition, BITM asked about the Fantasy Premier League (FPL)’s priciest ever players as fears mount up over the high price tags for 2014/15 stars like Eden Hazard.

Prices are likely to go the other way though with Internal Error’s collection of 2014/15’s Top Flops. Manchester United and Liverpool stars dominate his list. With just 126 points last season Chelsea’s Oscar was a flop for many, But our Great Expectations article on his prospects prompted this discussion on his chances of success next season and other possible intriguing differentials.

Our article on Theo Walcott, whose 2014/15 season was ravaged by injury, also triggered a lively debate as to whether his injury record and high points per game average makes him the perfect FPL player.

Meanwhile, the actual price tags of players were the subject of Berbinho’s Head’s hot topic, which aimed to highlight how statistics and career medals can be misleading when valuing a player.

Bowstring the Trout’s excellent research into the impact of recent managerial changes at Premier League clubs showed how a new boss can have a positive impact on a team’s performance, with Alan Pardew’s arrival at Crystal Palace being particularly eye catching.

Despite having a new manager, with Quique Sanchez Flores joining as head coach earlier this month, Ludo is unconvinced Watford will have a successful 2015/16 and fears the newly promoted side may struggle in the top flight.

The launch of the UEFA U21 Fantasy game also sparked a flurry of points as the community hurriedly researched the best young footballing talent in Europe. The Serjeant popped by with a look at the best budget defensive options, while we also launched a RMT surgery for those looking to get advice.

Finally, the summer break has given the community the chance to look back at some of the best FPL players of all time and construct their all time FPL dream team.

The Members Tables

Sharp shooters with a high goal conversion rate are the subject of Ethered the unready’s latest table. Meanwhile, my table looking at the best defenders for accruing FPL bonus points is now live.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

Absolutely agree. We need something stirring - I've always loved "Land of Hope and Glory" but I doubt if other members of the Union would accept it.

I have nothing against Iceland, but it saddens me to see good old Czech Republic in this condition. 🙁

It's not just the result. It's not just the performance. It's already that player list. It used to be Cech, Jiranek, Ujfalusi, Jankulovski, Galásek, Smicer, Rosicky, Nedved, Poborsky, Baros, Koller. And you still had Plasil, Grygera, Heinz and others on bench. And then the way they played, what a beautiful team! What is left of it now is Cech, Plasil and a half Rosicky and don't even talk about the style of play. And yes there is a new generation coming, but forgive me for my lack of excitement with the quality after having witnessed Poborsky, Rosicky and Nedved at their best.

Actually, your pick on Taarabt made me think of "Insomnia" because of this:

"He’s 25 now and, for all his pissing and whining so far, his middling CV reads thus; Le Havre, Newcastle, Wigan, Villa – though you can’t help but think in his mind it reads ‘Le Havre, AC Inter Milan, Real Barcelona, God’s Own Fantasy XI.’"

          http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/lists/115718/top-10-football-prima-donnas.html

There's by the way, one huge misjudgement from their side on the list.

    http://www.whoscored.com/Articles/goroov65zeen2-mxqgliiq/Show/Player-Focus-Why-Milner-Ings-Will-Prove-to-be-Astute-Liverpool-Acquisitions

"The 22-year-old [Ings] netted 11 times in the Premier League last term, more than any Liverpool player (Gerrard was the Reds’ top scorer with 9)"

What a brilliant statistical argument, seen the data resources he has at hand!

Yes, but also none of the Pool strikers played as much as 1000 minutes this season, Ings played over 3000 minutes. There's little doubt that Sturridge would have scored more than 11 goals had he played anything close to 3000 minutes.

No no, I got that, just noted that aside from that critique, there's also that his goal tally is a bit less impressive if you put it in terms of goals/90min.

Ah good, was concerned you were taking me literally 🙂

Even that is too blunt to be a worthwhile analysis (as I'm sure you appreciate - I know how highly you value certain stats)

Even ignoring the fact that stats can never tell the whole story, citing a goalscoring rate without looking at volume and quality of chances, circumstances, etc. is more or less pointless. Ings may be a good or bad signing but that article doesn't even begin to touch upon the necessary points.

City to bid 40m for Sterling with a 'take it or leave it' offer according to papers. 190k a week on a 5 year contract offered. Paul Joyce thinks City could include a player in the deal as well.

I know this may not be popular, but I'd take Dzeko and cash. The only way LFC can sign a decent striker, imo.

You wouldn't have won the league without him in 2013/2014. 71 goals in 185 apps, mostly off the bench as well. Nothing in comparison to Aguero but don't be so ungrateful. Years ago City could only dreamed to have signed a player like Edin Dzeko let alone Aguero.

Thank him for that, but he has to go. Have u seen how much 'must score' chances he missed? And almost all goals he scored were served him perfectly from someone. Last goal I remember he did by his own was against Cardiff 2 seasons ago. I will celebrate when he leave us, u can't imagine how much frustration he makes to me on every single match. And he can't run, can't press the opponent.

I understand that you want to move on and sign better players but if you're going to 'celebrate' selling a player who helped your team win their 2nd PL trophy in 44 years, have a quiet word with yourself.

The value of one good season in the Premier League is extraordinary nowadays.

I think Dzeko is underrated round these parts, he's a bit of a second rate Shearer in terms of his style but second rate Shearer is still better than most other options available.

Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has revealed that Jackson Martinez is set to join AC Milan for €35m.

The striker has been linked with a number of top clubs in Europe, but has apparently decided on Milan.

"Jackson Martinez has chosen Milan," Da Costa told Porto Canal. "I want him to be happy.

"Before going on vacation, Jackson announced he wanted to leave. The €35m clause is not up for debate and must be paid. I learned just now that Jackson has chosen Milan.

"This is what he wants, the destination is irrelevant as far as I am concerned."

Sawfly; I'm not 100% sure this will work on Willow but it's worth a crack GW.

A dozen or so Elder leaves. bruise the leaves and soak in water for a few days, pour the water only into whatever you intend to use to spray the leaves having first put a "small" squirt of washing up liquid in. Give it a shake to mix thoroughly and spray on the affected plant on a dry day to give the Elder and soap a chance to coat and dry on the plant.

Put a few more leaves in with the first and repeat for another mix in case it pours with rain soon after treatment.

This is actually what I've used for Gooseberry Sawfly in the past and the Sawfly may be a different sub species, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I'd up the proportions if it is a large Willow.

        Good luck with it GW.

Lovely stuff Flynn, will give this a bash - it's a decent sized willow and I've only noticed a few galls so I'm hoping I've caught it early. Got to love the range of advice in this community 🙂

Great team name. He really is the ideal pick in so may ways. Corners on both sides, free kicks, pops at goal and more through balls than any other player.
