Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Aaron Creswell

Having racked up two goals and 14 assists for Ipswich in 2013/14, Aaron Cresswell’s raiding displays persuaded former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce to splash the cash last summer. Immediately nailing down a starting berth, the left-back was one of only four outfield players to feature from start to finish in every one of his side’s league fixtures in the previous campaign.

Cresswell’s displays saw him named as the Hammer of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year in his debut top-tier campaign and his performances were noteworthy enough to attract reported interest from Premier League big boys Manchester City and Chelsea.

Having opted to sign a new five-year deal at West Ham over the last couple of weeks, Cresswell will be keen to push on under new boss Slaven Bilic this time around as the Hammers prepare for their final season at Upton Park…

Key Factors

    • Cresswell’s haul of attacking returns last term (two goal and four assists) was more than respectable yet didn’t quite do justice to his impressive underlying statistics. Comparing his goal threat to fellow defenders, only Branislav Ivanovic (11) fashioned more attempts on target than the Hammers full-back over the course of the previous campaign. Furthermore, Cresswell sat joint top – alongside Seamus Coleman – with regards to shot accuracy (47.4%) among those defenders that fired off at least ten attempts. Turning our attention towards his creative influence, Cresswell served up 34 chances for his team-mates, which was just two shy of Ivanovic’s total and only bettered by three other defenders.

    • Having tallied 129 points last time out, Cresswell has retained his 5.5 starting price. Only three teams (Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United) accrued fewer clean sheets than the Irons (nine) in the previous campaign, so unless Bilic’s arrival engenders a substantial improvement on the defensive front, Cresswell’s value lies in his attacking potential. The fact that the former Ipswich Town man never pushed past the 5.7 mark last season and ended with a mere 5% ownership suggests he could become a differential to watch in that mid-price bracket, should he be overlooked once again.

    • Beyond a flirtation with the top four berths at the halfway point of the season, West Ham’s promising campaign fell apart. Their greatest shortcoming was a severe lack of goals, given that the final 16 league matches of Sam Allardyce’s reign harvested just nine. With Bilic at the helm, however, the Hammers are likely to be adopt a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 set-up – crucially, the former Croatia manager, who’s been stressing the importance of attacking with fluidity and numbers, favours inverted wingers, which should afford Cresswell license to maraud forward and provide the width, thus enhancing his attacking prospects.

    • Notwithstanding a trip to London rivals Arsenal in Gameweek 1, West Ham’s start to the new campaign throws up some enticing match-ups. Visits to Liverpool (Gameweek 4) and Manchester City (Gameweek 6) should also prove stern tests, yet the remaining six fixtures up to Gameweek 9 (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR, sun, cpl) all present decent opportunities for clean sheets.

For the rotation to be cost effective it can only come to 23.5m

That would require some serious corner cutting:

        Debuchy, Yoshida, O'Shea, Wollschied, Francis

    Anything horribly wrong about this?

    Fabianski (4m)
Ivan - Moreno - Debuchy (Mings, Olsson)
Firmino - Walcott - Yaya - Puncheon (Wanyama)
    Rooney - Costa - Sakho

Debuchy has Bellerin to contend with. Puncheon has tough fixtures but Palace are a counter attacking team. Firmino and Walcott are gambles, but both very explosive. Basically its sound.

Debuchy not necessarily nailed on. Other than that, maybe you could say that Walcott and Firmino are not 100% guaranteed starters yet, but I think they will both start.

    Man United attacking options.

I have currently just got Rooney in my team however as a Man United fan i cannot see how we will line up formation wise and team wise.

Obviously Rooney will play every game leaving 3/4 other spots in attack. Now we will no doubt buy another striker but at the moment its Mata Di Maria Depay Young Fellaini Herrera.

You would imagine Depay will be in the starting line up as well as Mata so where does that leave the rest?

    What are peoples thoughts?

I think Özil's easily the safest in that respect but he offers next to no goal threat. Cazorla's similar in the way he's heavily reliant upon penalties.

            Is Ramsey a sure starter?
            Is Walcott a sure starter?

            I'm worried about both.

Well that position is probably the last defender you would be playing, so I'd look for someone who isn't as injury prone.

Any nailed on 4.5m would be better imo. Olsson perhaps.

Swap the keepers to Schmeichal & Hamer? He's a good keeper, and the fixtures are good for a while.

Or even Huth instead of Olsson.

I haven't looked at that area properly yet. 4.5m defenders are the last thing on the list of my things to do when building a team. 🙂

      -Tadic --- Mané --- JRod-
      ----------- Pelle ------------

Clasie is clearly an educated guess and Targett as cover for Bertrand.

5-6 week recovery since the beginning of this week. So maybe 2-3 weeks of the season missed.

Juanmi, JWP, davis, etc could all see game time in the league or will they be used for Europa and cups?

Yes, I expect some rotation in the league, though maybe some will have greater responsibility in Europa to compensate. As I say, this is educated guessing.

And, wouldn't JRod likely start upfront, with somebody like JWP or Juanmi on midfield?

Nope, Koeman loves Pelle. Unfortunately. Plus JRod has proven that he sometimes struggles to lead the line. He works MUCH better with another striker.

Gaston is still with us and Koeman has said he wants to give him a chance. Believe injuries and fatigue played against him in previous years.

JRod has always played wide and cut in. When he did so well with Lambert, he was playing just in behind on the wing.

I can't see JWP and Juanmi consistently playing. Though it would depend on Tadic's fitness and form. His position is most at risk, I think.

Gaston's still got pretty much the same record in first season at Southampton as in his last season in Serie A. He only dropped in form on second season, and it was not only because he played less, it was also because he no longer got into the box. Something went wrong with him then, but I don't think it is unrepairable. I buy this injury explanation completely. It takes more time for players who themselves create chances to return in form, than for those who rely on other players' creativity. I think he's a classy player and could provide you some much needed goal scoring ability if he can overcome those injuries. Isn't he fit now? So he would have a full pre-season to prepare to the new season.

Anyone else noticed that Valencia is now classed as a defender? At 5.5 he might be worth a look. His attacking potential could well deliver some good points and Man Utd are likely to keep some clean sheets, meaning he'll benefit from that too.

Also, I've added an image on the gravatar site. Do I need to link from here to there or just wait for it to kick in?

I was just thinking. RVP's exit looks very probable. Since it is likely he is leaving who do people think will realistically replace him? I reckon a deal for a new striker is in the works but who do people think could walk through the door?

seems the two most viable options that seem premier league bound! Would be interesting to see can the do the job in the prem. Even Benzema could come under scrutiny in my opinion. When some big names come to the top four prem teams their seems to be a 50/50 split of success and flop stories

Somebody with pace to run in behind (though not Chicharito, the rest of his play is too limited).

LVG will have to sign someone, can't imagine he's going to go a season with just Rooney and WIlson, though maybe he could have plans for Depay centrally?

      Lacazette?

if it is depay up front in that more attacking role it would certainly boost his value!

      I have no idea.

PSG will want to keep Cavani with Ibra looking like he only has a year left. Higuain would be too expensive, Benzema is unlikely as Madrid only have the one striker, Lyon have been making all the sounds of a team that want to keep Lacazette.

      It's slim pickin's! 😀

Why would Higuain be too expensive? They supposedly have a war chest...they were going to spend 45m on Falcao!

Higauin's buyout clause is something like £68 million. Bit steep for me.

Just because Napoli's valuation far exceeds his value. If Man U REALLY wanted him they could no doubt afford it, but despite their cavalier attitude to transfers, I don't think they're completely daft. 😆

At the moment without RVP, we have Roo, Wilson and Chicarito... I feel Hernandez has a point to prove under the new boss. This will technically be his first playing season under LVG so for me I think he will be a player to watch! Depay as mentioned above could play an advanced role and used up front too so would make him good value if that is the case! As a united fan I would love Higauin and all above mentioned but the teams may play hardball for them. Benzema seems premier league bound though! as for United I am not sure! One thing for certain is that we need to buy at least one striker. Even if we go Rooney as a lone striker one addition as a good back up would be nice
