Scout Reports

Scout Report – Jose Angel Crespo

Cordoba defender Jose Angel Crespo became Aston Villa’s fourth defensive recruit of the summer, after arriving earlier today for a reported fee of just £500,000. The 28-year-old follows Mark Bunn, Micah Richards and Jordan Amavi to the Midlands as Tim Sherwood continues to restructure his first-team squad.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Sherwood revealed he’s a long-term admirer of the new recruit:

“Jose is a player who has been on our radar for some time and we’re really pleased to secure his signature. He is an experienced player who has played in La Liga and Serie A, two of the strongest leagues in Europe, and from speaking to him I know he can’t wait to play for Aston Villa.”

The History

Born in Andalusia, Crespo worked his way up the youth ranks at Sevilla after joining them as a 15-year-old. After two years of training at their academy, he made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos midway through the 2005/06 La Liga campaign. Crespo managed a further two league starts that term, spending the remainder of his time turning out for their reserve outfit.

Crespo earned just 23 first-team appearances at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán over the next three seasons while tallying three goals in 73 outings for the B team. In pursuit of a regular starting berth, the Spain U21 international then made the switch to Racing Santander for the 2009/10 campaign. Unfavoured during his stint with the Cantabria club, Crespo notched just 13 appearances over the course of the season.

Having been released by Sevilla in the summer of 2010, the Spaniard plotted a route to Serie B side Padova, where he chalked up one goal in 43 appearances. He then transferred to Serie A outfit Bologna the following summer, recording just seven appearances (three starts) during his debut campaign with the Red-Blues.

Crespo dropped down to Serie B for the 2012/13 season, carding 14 appearances in a year-long loan spell at Verona. With a return to Bologna harvesting only 10 appearances throughout the 2013/14 campaign, Crespo went out on loan to Cordoba last summer. Despite failing to register a single goal or assist across 27 appearances, Crespo signed a permanent deal with the Spanish club earlier this month before making his move to Villa.

At international level, he made a total of 15 appearances for the Spanish U19, U20 and U21 sides but has never been selected for senior duties.

The Prospects

The versatile Crespo offers Sherwood an option right across the back-four slots. Last season at Cordoba, he started 26 times – 14 as a centre-half, nine at left-back and three of the right of defence – whilst in his final year with Bologna, he primarily lined up on the right of midfield.

Whether he can do enough to justify a starting berth is another matter entirely. Crespo averaged less than 15 appearances per season over the past four years, with his most recent stint at Cordoba marking just the second time in his career that he’s been afforded a prolonged run of starts. Having accrued just 83 outings in the top tier of Spanish and Italian football, he may well prove no more than back-up in a defence that was hit hard by injuries in 2014/15.

Certainly, new boy Jordan Amavi looks nailed-on at left-back, given the significant outlay, and with Micah Richards and Ciaran Clark currently shaping up to be the Villains’ favoured centre-back partnership, one would imagine that Crespo needs to displace Alan Hutton at right-back to earn a spot in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI. Given that Leandro Bacuna also offers an option for that position, it looks by no mean certain that Crespo will find his way into the starting XI.

In terms of fixtures, Sherwood’s side have a decent start, with showdowns against Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six. The fact that Villa conceded 57 times last term – the third worst defence in the top-flight – suggests investment may be hard to come by for Sherwood’s backline regulars.

Setting you back 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Crespo is identically priced to Richards, though the former City defender looks a far more secure pick if you’re looking at cut-price options.

For those prepared to shell out more, Amavi (5.0) netted four goals last term and crafted more key passes (32) than all but seven Premier League defenders. Bacuna, meanwhile, has been stationed on the right of midfield in pre-season and could offer us an out-of-position option – the Dutchman racked up five assists as a right-back in just 983 minutes at the end of last term and also has a share of set-pieces.

Given that the likes of Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the West Brom defence are also available for 5.0, though, it looks very unlikely that many will be prepared to splash out on a porous backline that has plenty of convincing still to do.

My only worries would be Bassong....think Norwich will ship loads of goals despite nice fixtures and Walcott due to Sanchez's return

Thoughts on this bunch would be greatly appreciated:

    Schmeichel Schwarzer

    Azpi Koscielny O'Shea Mings Targett

    Hazard Ozil Depay Ritchie Wanyama

    Rooney Giroud Pelle

My Aguero enabler will be either Giroud > Sakho or Pelle > Deeney/Wilson

Considering downgrading Kosc to upgrade Ritchie to Milner?

FPL Dilemma – Raheem Sterling vs David Silva

    Source: FPLupdates

With Manchester City splashing out nearly £50 million for Raheem Sterling, a price tag of just 9.0m on Fantasy Premier League seems an absolute bargain, but there are plenty of other options within the Manchester City midfield, David Silva being one of them! So do we go for the British record transfer or the tried and tested Spaniard?

    Raheem Sterling

So firstly, lets take a look at some statistics and what £50m buys you! In 3,047 minutes last season, Sterling managed 7 goals and 10 assists, which isn’t a bad return for a midfielder, but it could be a lot better. This season, we are sure he will look to improve on this tally, trying to impress his new fans and also try to nail down a place in the starting XI alongside some world class players. City don’t face the easiest of starts travelling to the Hawthorns, then at home to the reigning champions (Chelsea) and finally away to the Toffees. However, after those 3 relatively challenging games things pick up, facing; Watford, Palace, West Ham, Spurs, Newcastle, Bournemouth.

    David Silva

Last season, David Silva’s efforts of 12 goals and 12 assists in 2,646 minutes, which was 400 minutes less than that of Raheem Sterling. Looking back, it can be quite surprising how many goals the Spanish wizard actually managed as he generally loves to assist. However, it must be taken into account that with Yaya Toure and Raheem Sterling back in form, the goals and assists are likely to be spread more evenly, which could be bad news for any Silva owners.

    Who to choose?

Manchester City’s first 3 games are not so favourable and coupled with the fact that a certain Sergio Aguero will be late back to action due to the Copa America, it might be best to give them both a miss. However, as mentioned above, from gameweek 4 onwards we would recommend bringing at least one into your team along with Sergio Aguero. Sterling and Silva are primarily assister’s and with Aguero back in the team they are likely to be more productive fantasy football wise.

    FPL Conclusion: Neither to start
My conclusion: Sterling then downgrade to facilitate Aguero GW4

Believe me, come GW4 you'll wish you double up MCI attack.

I think I will get Kun + one of Silva/Sterling/YYT at the expense of Roo/Wally/Pelle and some others

    Cech | Elliot
    Ivanovic | Cresswell | Cédric | Kaboul | Baker
    Sterling | Walcott | Fàbregas | Chadli | Aarons
    Costa | Rodriguez | Wilson

    2.0 in the Bank

    Cech (5.5) | Elliot (4.0) – (9.5)

Cech plays every game, fancy Arsenal to keep more Clean Sheets and Cech to get more Save Points than they both have in previous Seasons.

    Ivanovic (7.0) | Cresswell (5.5) | Cédric (5.0) | Kaboul (4.5) | Baker (4.0) – (26.0)

Ivanovic provides Clean Sheets as well as Goal threat and Assist prospects, he also seems to start the Season flying. Baring a couple of fixtures West Ham have a nice run of games, Cresswell also provides Goal & Assist potential. Southampton have one of the best opening runs, if Cédric can carry on Assisting like he has in other teams he’ll be a great buy at 5.0. Kaboul should improve Sunderland’s defence, add to that his price and fixtures I think he maybe the best 4.5 option, I do need to keep an eye on team sheets to make sure he’s a starter mind. Baker 4.0 non playing filler, would have been Targett but don’t want to waste a Southampton slot.

    Sterling (9.0) | Walcott (9.0) | Fàbregas (9.0) | Chadli (7.0) | Aarons (5.0) – (39.0)

Sterling provides City cover until Aguero is back, seems to be playing well in pre season and could also be playing up-top now and again. When Walcott plays he’s gets points, usually at a better rate than most others in the game, needs to stay fit and cement his place mind you. Can’t afford Hazard, 11.5 is just too much imo. Fabregas is a great alternative at 9.0, I expect a lot of Chelsea’s goals and assists to be spread around the team. Chadli, great price at 7.0 and we’ve seen in the past he can score big. Aarons is my punt, he scored a couple last season before getting injured and has got a few in pre season. When I’ve been reading about Newcastle’s pre season games Aarons seems to be involved in the vast majority of their goals.

    Costa (11.0) | Rodriguez (7.0) | Wilson (5.5) – (23.5)

Costa fills the Aguero slot till he’s back (2.0 in the Bank). Rodriguez has shown he can score from the wing before, seems to be going pretty well in pre season and although they have European games I’m going to keep him in. Could even see him pushing Pelle out of the forward slot in a few games. Bournemouth have the best opening 8 game weeks imo, Wilson scored 20 Goals and 13 Assists in 45 Championship games last season, worth the gamble for the first few game weeks, especially with Bournemouth’s run.

Sound reasoning. Costa's injury scares have put me off him for now (don't see him playing more than 60 against Swansea) so I've gone Hazard and Benteke. Also Rodriguez is a punt too far for me

I'll give Ade a bash if he goes to villa, for sure - probably will upgrade Deeney/ Wilson to him and downgrade somebody else. He's still got a few goals in him I reckon for that price!

I've gone with Anya in midfield as I've been told Wanyama's price may drop when his high ownership-base realise he doesn't get many points and swap him for someone else

So, so Crunch......difficult to properly decide until we've had all pre-season, Com Shield and mangers pressers next week.

Have prepared some skeleton efforts and a bunch of options to fit around them.

In summary, too early to confirm anything. And you?

Wow. That front line is really very good.
Mids 2 3 and 4 have you in trouble though. any 2 of them would be fine as your 3 and 4 but none of them should be your no 2.
In terms of clubs you have 3 lei 2 che 2 bou 2 sou and everyone else. Only 2 of the clubs that I have listed are likely to bear the weight of your expectation.
      Hope that helps

That insane frontline is killing your midfield - downgrade one of the front 3 (I'd say costa) to benteke and upgrade ritchie/ cabaye

          Think of it like this:

          * Costa - 11m - Last season 150pts
          *Ritchie - 6m - Unknown in PL

          vs

          * Benteke - 8.5 - Last season 127 points (inc. injury time, but same goes for Costa with the old hamstring)
          * Any 8.5 Midfielder: Cazorla, Eriksen, Yaya, Mata, etc

Last season, Mata for example scored 138 whilst not always being in the first team. So with Costa and Ritchie, you get that ridiculous front line but you are piling a hell of a lot of pressure on the shoulders of an unproven (PL-wise anyway) Bournemouth player

Here's my team. I'd like to get Sterling in though, but than I have to upgrade Mané and I think he'll be the one to have from Saints. What's your opinion on having Sterling + 8.5 Arsenal mid? I feel like i'll regret not having Sterling.

    Butland / Ruddy

    Azpi / Kos / Mings / Huth / OShea

    Haz / Ramsey / Mané / Chadli / Sinclair

    Rooney / Benteke / Sakho

It looks very good, only area of weakness is the GK. As Sinclair is likely to be benched in your team (assuming you are playing 3-4-3), could you downgrade to Wanyama? Gives you 0.5 to upgrade Butland to either Fabianski or Pantilimon?

Scored home and away against all 3 teams last season

          Total of 10 goals

I think they could get just as many if not more, so that's a lot of goal/assist potential

Couldn't choose between Ozil and Cazorla for my Arsenal spot there and had Sterling but wasn't completely sure about him and I needed .5 in my defence so I have both Arsenal players and no City atm

I never understand the "cover" approach for attackers - attackers get points wholly through individual performance, not partly through team performance like GK/DEFs?

So, my answer to your question would be "not necessarily"

      1. JÆKS ⭐
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

Well if you expect a team score a lot of goals there is a chance some of them will be scored by the player you own. So it's always more comfortable to have a player of an attacking team like City or Arsenal. But I am not sure if I would be tempted by Yaya (8.5) Sterling (9.0) or Silva (10.0) with these 3 fixtures....

Correct, but then I would still wait for the game against Everton I think.
