Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

Liverpool climb to joint-third in the top flight after a second successive 1-0 win. Christian Benteke grabs his first goal for the Anfield outfit, whilst Jordan Henderson supplies the assist before being forced off with a foot problem. Here’s the notes from Monday’s floodlit encounter…

Benteke Fires Reds To Victory

Christian Benteke came up trumps at the second time of asking, opening his Liverpool account by virtue of a controversial goal. Although Bournemouth fans will lament the linesman’s decision not to raise the offside flag after Philippe Coutinho seemingly interfered with play, Benteke’s 40% ownership were delighted to bank the Belgian’s nine-point haul in an otherwise low-scoring Gameweek.

Benteke’s prospects are mixed over the next five Gameweeks (ars, WHU, mun, NOR, AVL), with two challenging road trips balanced out by three enticing home encounters. Nonetheless, the former Aston Villa hitman will certainly fancy his chances to score at Old Trafford, having netted in both league ties against Manchester United last term.

The Reds were far from commanding but ultimately secured their second consecutive victory and clean sheet. Naturally, Fantasy managers will be drawn towards their rearguard assets, with Joe Gomez (4.6) presenting the cheapest option of the current starters. On that note, the difficulty of Liverpool’s next trio of fixtures and the threat of rotation from Alberto Moreno diminishes the 18-year-old’s appeal slightly.

Philippe Coutinho failed to register in back-to-back matches, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying: no player in the league fashioned more attempts at goal (eight) than the Brazilian playmaker in Gameweek 2, emphasising his status as the most potent goal threat in the Reds’ midfield. Of course, Roberto Firmino – who replaced Jordon Ibe in the 70th minute – harbours the potential to steal that crown away from his compatriot when he’s afforded a starting berth.

Jordan Henderson delivered his first attacking returns of the campaign with the assist for Benteke’s close-range strike. His 20.1% ownership couldn’t cheer for long, however, after the Reds captain was replaced by Emre Can at the 52-minute mark due to a foot injury. Brendan Rodgers revealed after the match that Henderson missed training during the week because of this complaint:

“He’s had a problem with the bottom of his foot. He hadn’t trained for part of the week, he was taking some painkillers with it. He did ever so well to even be out on the field. He wanted to try it, he wanted to give it a go, but you could see he was limited in his running. He did great for us in the period of time that he was on but it’s important that we get victories and it’s important that we have fit players on the field and unfortunately for him he was just in too much pain.”

Ritchie Impresses Despite Cherries Defeat

After carding a 1-0 defeat for the second week running, Bournemouth join Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion in the relegation zone. The Cherries turned out a spirited performance but failed to test Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet with enough regularity, tallying just two shots on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Much of the Cherries’ positive play funnelled through winger Matt Ritchie (5.9), who ranked fourth for attempts at goal (five) among midfielders this Gameweek and struck the upright with one of his efforts. In light of the south coast club’s excellent upcoming run of fixtures (whm, LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT), the Scotsman’s 4% ownership may well be reluctant to cut their losses just yet.

Budget forward Callum Wilson was less impressive up front alongside Joshua King, mustering just one shot all night. With places in our three-man frontlines at a premium and having already dropped to 5.4 overnight, Wilson seems unlikely to survive the chop among those managers with Wildcards active.

Eddie Howe made two changes to his opening day line-up, drafting in both Eunan O’Kane and Max Gradel for their first starts, with Dan Gosling and Marc Pugh dropping to the bench. While Wilson disappointed, it was King who made way on the hour-mark as Howe looked to revive fortunes. New signing Lee Tomlin was introduced for King and he could now threaten to work his way into the starting line-up for the trip to West Ham in Gameweek 3. At the back, popular budget option, Tyrone Mings, was again benched with Charlie Daniels retaining the left-back berth.

Thoughts please. Think I'm settled on this.

    Mignolet / McCarthy
    Darmian / Oxford / Richards / Kompany / Williams
Yaya Touré / Payet / Sánchez / Mahrez / Ayew
    Agüero / Gomis / Zárate

    FT, £0.3m in the bank.

Like it - virtually the same team as me. Only concern I have is lack of Chelsea coverage, especially Hazard...he's in so many teams that if he has a good week, we're going to suffer.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Your differentials

Whether wildcarding or not who are the differentials in your side that you think are going to give you an advantage over the highly owned players over the coming Gameweeks.

Because it a is a player that few own. So if your player does well and the popular pick flounders then that can represent a significant boost in the rankings. But there's an obvious catch - if the highly owned player does well and your differential doesn't then a ranking slide will follow.

the trick is to have a good mix of well owned players that will do well and one or two differentials that have the potential to do well.

There is confusion though around differential, as in some see it as different from many FFS community teams. But as last season in gwk 8 showed when many FFS players had Tadic and Pelle, who were both ignored by the majority, the FFS 'template' and the actual template are two very different things.

Not so I think. I went from 100K to 5K that gameweek and never left the top 5K or thereabouts. What FFS players are good at is keeping a good rank by playing the fixtures. Getting to the top 5K - now that's the tricky part.

For all my top 10K finishes I've been there by Christmas at least- its really hard to get in come Gameweek 30 when teams become template, the bigger sides become more predictable at winning and the weaker sides at loosing.

Gwk 1- 19 is all about building value and getting as close to the top 10K as you can.

Sakho is still at 3.5% ownership so I will stick with him as a 'differential' .
Had some chances in the last 2 games, unlucky to finish them

Basically all the top players we spent weeks choosing who the wild carders are selling now. Mane, Cedric, Sakho, Kane (FFS ownership)

Diouf probably, I'll have to weigh him against Pelle or Gomis though.

At this stage in the game I'm not really looking for differentials - just trying to squeeze as many of the likely big hitters in

Sakho right now. Pelle too perhaps, neither of them performing with great fixtures so might need to look into getting more popular picks!

They may not be differentials around here but -

      Sakho 3.5% ownership
      Mane 6.5% ownership

Exactly - great differentials. Sakho brace and that's a great rise in the ranking potentially.

I think Vardy's problem is that he's playing more through the flank, like a midfielder. I expect him to be an assist machine, not sure about goals though. But definitely a better long term pick than Sakho, Deeney or Wilson.

Looking at ownership my differentials are Myhill and Wilson.

Looking at this site my differentials might be Depay and Hazard.

Well i've got Shelvey/Ozil/Chadli/Rooney/Hazard and they look like they are slowly becoming differentials on here atleast with all the WCs being played 😆

Still think Jerome will do well soon and I'm keeping him.

Barkley if Martinez continues in that formation will be this year's siggy. Kone is also interesting.

Montero is unstoppable at the moment.

Max Gradel looks dangerous, especially against weaker full backs.

Wilf Zaha is also one to watch

Mane for me. He's under delivered points wise given his stats, I'm certain there are returns on the horizon. Delighted to see him being ditched. Currently on the wc awaiting mahrez double rise and Mane dropping.

In a similar vein I think Deeney has good stats and could be due for a return. Sticking with him as the 3rd striker.

Yeah, it's unbelievable that no one on here mentions Deeneys stats really. Watford looks good, and they're up for a good run fixture wise if Southampton show up at the Vicarage with the same defense that played Everton.

Transfer Wilson to Gomiz for -4 points... I would have 0.2 in the bank and I wanted to change Sakho but no idea who too. Advice really appreciated.

    Ruddy, (Butland)
    Azpilicueta, Cédric, Prödl, (Huth), (Mings)
    Mané, Sánchez, Henderson, Payet, (Ritchie)
    Sakho, Wilson, Agüero
