Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 4

Our last glance back at the previous round of fixtures brings Palace’s new goal-getting wide man into focus. Swansea’s outstanding start to the season is also acknowledged, whilst the lack of impact from big hitters is causing plenty of concern.

The Player

Bakary Sako’s weekend goal and assist ensured Jose Mourinho had little to cheer about in his 100th home match in charge of Chelsea.

Having fired the winner at home to Villa in his Gameweek 3 debut, the Mali international went one better as Palace emerged from Stamford Bridge with all three points. After just two matches, Sako – who has also earned maximum bonus on both occasions – has racked up 23 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Delve into the underlying data and it’s clear to see his immediate impact is no fluke. Despite playing only half of the first four Gameweeks, Sako leads the way amongst midfielders for shots on target, with a total of eight – put into perspective, team-mates Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie, Jason Puncheon and Yohan Cabaye have mustered seven attempts on target between them.

Given that Bolasie and Zaha managed four strikes apiece last term, Sako’s arrival clearly offers the Eagles greater firepower in the attacking midfield three slots. His 15 efforts for Wolves – albeit at a lesser level in the Championship – illustrates his eye for goal and the midfielder’s performances so far suggest he’s stepped up seamlessly to the top-flight.

At a price of just 5.5 in FPL, Sako looks set to follow in the footsteps of Riyad Mahrez and offer Fantasy managers another budget candidate to consider in their five-man midfields. Upcoming clashes with City and Spurs may deter many from immediate investment, with the schedule taking a turn for the better in Gameweek 7. With Pardew’s emphasis on attack, though, last weekend’s result suggests the Palace new boy has the talent to reward early adopters and flourish regardless of fixture.

The Team

A 2-1 home win over United maintained Swansea’s superb start to the season as Garry Monk’s men went into the international break in fourth spot in the Premier League.

The manner of the weekend win underlined Monk’s tactical acumen. Devoid of the injured Jefferson Montero, the Swans boss shifted from 4-2-3-1 to a midfield diamond after seeing his side go behind, with Andre Ayew moved up front alongside Bafetimbi Gomis. The impact was instant, as the duo bagged a goal apiece to condemn the Red Devils to their first defeat of the campaign.

Having also scored twice away to Chelsea, Monk’s men have deservedly earned plenty of Fantasy interest in the first month of the season. With four and three goals accrued respectively, Gomis and Ayew have undoubtedly been the standout candidates but they’ve been backed by a supporting cast including Montero, Jonjo Shelvey and Gylfi Sigurdsson that has created chances aplenty.

One look at the upcoming schedule suggests more of the same, too. With trips to Watford and Villa twinned with home encounters against Everton, Spurs and Stoke, Swansea sit third in our Season Ticker for attacking potential over the next six Gameweeks. Given their form so far, the case for having at least one, or even two Swansea options, could well prove a very viable tactic.

The Talking Point

It’s been a season that could barely have been more frustrating for Fantasy managers so far.

Manchester City aside, few, if any, big hitting teams have managed to meet our expectations – indeed, although the Etihad club sit atop the league, Sergio Aguero has scored just once, compounding our misery further. For many, the Argentine’s blank at home to Watford was just the latest in a series of captaincy fails as the campaign stutters out the blocks.

In midfield, we’re desperately awaiting the likes of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez to ignite, whilst up front, it’s arguably worse – not one of the top eight scoring forwards started with a price in excess of 8.0. Aguero, Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney have all failed to justify the hefty outlay, leaving mid-price and budget options to lead the way.

Surely it can’t continue like this. The likes of Aguero and Sanchez, in particular, have posted strong underlying stats that suggest keeping the faith is the wisest move. Whilst Hazard has clearly toiled for Chelsea so far, his record as Fantasy gold over the previous three years cannot be argued – flash back to last term and the Belgian managed just one goal in the first six before finally finding his form.

As we’ve seen time and again, the big hitters almost always rise to the top. Having a little patience seems the best answer but in the midst of an international break, with wildcards flying around, that’s never easy.

Navas is a great asset off the bench with his pace. Not that he'll want to do that, but that will be the case

I feel that KDB can be a great differential after international break. It will be difficult for many to incorporate him if he starts to perform, if they already have yaya/sterl, kol/komp, kun.

        This is my thinking too.
Thinking i might go sanchez to kdb gw6 after sanchez plays stoke at home and before he gets chelsea away and man utd at home in 3 weeks. Kdb fixtures will be excellent and as i dont have aguero, it could cover me to go yaya and kdb

I also can get him straight in with a hit as I don't own a city midfielder. Expecting a detailed analysis and stats of KDB and other new signings soon in FFS.

Well, at the moment Lyon plays CL, which means that they get big money if they keep their best players, and Lacazette having just prolonged his contract a successful CL campaign would allow them to sell him for even bigger money after one more season. That hikes the prices up significantly, enough that they turned down a bid upwards from €50M.

I watched Lyon play Arsenal at the Emirates over the summer, where they lost 6-0.
At one point Lacazette was through on goal and completely fluffed his lines - it was obviously aware that he was 'auditioning' for any suitors and wasn't focused. He needs another year at Lyon to show what he can do.

Anyone else think that the transfer fees being paid for young players stunt their growth?

It seems like clubs are now willing to pay 30+ million for a youngster on the outside chance of them being the next Messi or Ronaldo. Those players are freaks though and can't be replicated. The amount of pressure on young players with these enormous transfers fees must be immense. The only player that I can think that went for a huge fee to become a superstar is Neymar, and he was arguably already a superstar.

Really happy with my team, WC intact and no hits taken (although a couple in the way of price drops). Got on a lot of the risers at their lowest price and had the likes of Mahrez from the start...but sitting at 1.3m!

    CPL keepers
    Kolorov - Darmian - Richards - Francis - Alderweireld
    Hazard - Yaya - Ritchie - Mahrez - Bentaleb

Have players who rise, every 0.2 on rise increases your sales value by 0.1

A bit late but Ayew, Wilson or Mahrez raised fast and the lucky owners can sell them for more than they bought them for.

If you sold every player today your TV would be worth 99.9

      Team value means nothing.
      Sale value means something.

TV is what others would have to pay to get your team. It means something. When are you going to sell players that rise a lot anyway...

Well it means nothing to you as an individual then. Might mean something to someone trying to get your team for some reason.

Why has Hazard - by far the most transferred out player this season - only dropped 0.1? I tactically chose not to pick him at the start (fixtures, form and percentage selected) hoping he would drop dramatically. Walcott has dropped 0.5

      I guess its the rate?

Massive amount got rid of him night before the deadline so he could only fall 0.1 or something similar?

No idea in truth just a theory

because of that. the people who did buy him are generally people who know the value of his continued presence, and aim to hold him for his hauls. and the casuals who barely know they have a team

Price drops are calculated as a percentage of total ownership.

Illustrative example (numbers are approximated to make the maths easier) - In Hazard's case, at season start he was owned by 1.4 million people, so (using 10% of ownership drop leading to 0.1 price drop as an example) he'd need 140k net transfers out to drop 0.1. So when he hit 1.26 million owners, he dropped. He now needs to lose 126k more (Down to 1.1 millionish owners) to drop again.

Walcott was only owned by 250k at season start, so he only needs 25k net transfers out to drop, then another 22k for the second drop etc.

walcott has lost ~80% of owners, hazard only ~30%

If i'm not wrong, it takes 10% of people that own him to drop him so he could loose 0.1

He was owned by cca 1.5mil people at start of the season so its needed 150k net transfers out to drop.

Out of 1.5mil people that owned him, a lot of them were just autocomplete teams from people that never again logged in so he is still in those teams, and there's been a lot of WC played in those 4 GW and those transfers doesn't count.

So all of those made it really hard for Haz to drop.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Current team - ranked 1.65 million:

    Butland - Ruddy
    Coates - Azpil - Huth - Francis - Mert
    Yaya - Sanchez - Hendo - Sterling - Mahrez
    Aguero - Wilson - Defoe

1FT and 0.6 in the bank

Possible to improve via transfers or is it time to WC?
