The Digest – Gameweek 8

Southampton’s display at Stamford Bridge serves notice of their potential ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez’ simultaneous return to form turns the Fantasy landscape on its head.

The Player

A five-goal blitz in just 20 minutes against Newcastle last Saturday served a telling reminder of Sergio Aguero’s talents as the Argentine cast aside his early-season toils emphatically.

There’s no doubt that Aguero had tested our collective patience. At a time where many mid-price frontman were flourishing, the City striker’s single goal and assist over the first seven Gameweeks were a major concern.

You only had to look at the underlying stats for reassurance, though. Between Gameweek 1-7, he was firing an effort every 19.7 minutes – almost on a par with last year’s 17.9 minutes per shot. Even his frequency of key passes (82.2 minutes compared to 80.1) was more or less identical.

Whereas last term, he netted 17.6% of his efforts on his way to 26 goals and ten assists, Aguero had scored just 4% of his shots before Steve McClaren’s boys paid visit last weekend, spurning all but one of his previous 25 attempts.

There were hints this was coming, though. Three goals and four assists over the previous international break for Argentina. Eight attempts and a late winner in City’s midweek Champions League win in Wolfsburg. Aguero was getting the chances.

In a season that’s proven unpredictable, Saturday’s 50-point armband haul shows just why Aguero is the one real must-have frontman for most Fantasy managers around these parts. With Bournemouth, Norwich and Villa in the next four Gameweeks alone, the bandwagon is in full flow as those who’d braved the Magpies match without him scramble for a belated piece of the action.

The Team

A 3-1 win over Chelsea at the Bridge heaped further pressure on Jose Mourinho as the Saints moved into the top half of the table for the first time this term.

After a slow start, blighted by a number of first-team departures over the summer, Ronald Koeman’s side have finally settled into their groove. The St Mary’s outfit have racked up eight goals in the last three matches, which also includes clashes with Swansea and Man United, and look well-stocked with form options to consider. Impressively, Graziano Pelle has played a part in ten (five goals, five assists) of their 13 goals for the season, whilst Sadio Mane’s two goals and five assists in four starts perhaps gives him the edge over Dusan Tadic in the centre of the park.

At the back, the return of Ryan Bertrand and addition of Virgil van Dijk has helped Koeman’s men rediscover the resilience which saw them concede just 33 times last term. Aside from their 3-2 reverse at home to United in Gameweek 6, Southampton have conceded a combined total of two goals in five of the last six Gameweeks – both came from dead-ball situations, a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty and Willian free-kick.

Encouragingly, the about-turn in form arrives at a time when the fixtures smile very kindly on the Saints. Over the next eight Gameweeks, Koeman’s side are afforded four eye-catching home clashes (LEI, BOU, STO, AVL) and also travel to Sunderland and Palace. Investment at both ends of the pitch could well pay off, then, as they look build momentum on the back of their Chelsea destruction.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s return to scoring form arrives at a time where Alexis Sanchez has also banished his own barren run to rack up the goals for Arsenal. The Chilean followed up last week’s hat-trick at Leicester with a brace against United to soar up the Fantasy standings after a similarly sluggish start to 2015/16.

Taking the midweek Champions League matches into consideration, the South American duo have scored six times apiece in their last three appearances. Few, if any, top-flight talents can match that explosive potential and it’s fair to say that their recent resurgence has shaken up the Fantasy landscape.

Those who filled their 15-man squads with mid-price and budget form players, thus choosing to ignore one or both of Aguero and Sanchez, now face a major restructuring program if they are to bring the pair on board. Indeed, it’s no real surprise that the duo lead the way for transfers-in this week in the FPL game.

In this most unpredictable of seasons, there’s a reassuring sense of normality settling in once again. Those who have steadfastly held onto both and kept faith in the underlying numbers have been finally rewarded – it’s perhaps no coincidence that this recent turnaround has helped the Fantasy Football Scout leagues climb the leaderboards, an indication of our community’s faith in the big hitters.

Yes, it’s a belated victory for the so-called “template” approach. A triumph that’s been somewhat tainted by those preceding weeks of frustration and uncertainty but we’ll take it anyway. After suffering for the first two months, you could almost say we deserve it.

I wonder how much Mourinho wishes he had Lukaku still at Chelsea now. Seems to me to be the perfect player for them to come in when Costa gets injured rather than the ageing has been's Remy and Falcao. Would be the perfect player for Lukaku to learn from too as i feel his main weakness is not using his strength and size as well as he could.

      Gomis > Schmeichel
      Gabriel is risky
      Generally weak defence

Awesome attack, but I would seriously consider downgrading Mane (to Tadic?) to free up some cash.

I think I can play around with what I have in defence to get a good set up. I don't really wanna touch that front 8. Cleansheets are hard to come by anyways.

Butland and Hennessey are my GKs I made a woopsy.

I would downgrade Mané and upgrade your Arsenal defender to either Monreal or Bellerin.

I think Ayew or Mahrez can do as good a job as Mané there and you have Pellé anyway.

.Gomes is a better 2nd keeper option than Schmeichel

      1. FF Dirtbag
        • 12 Years

I would have to hope Mane goes up another 0.1 mill and then I could get Ayew and Bellerin/Monreal in. I might consider that actually. But I did enjoy how Mane played and with his fixtures its hard to ignore.

What do you guys think is the best time to Wildcard? I think for your first WC it has to be between GW7-10 because:
    - There is more certainty over who are the best front 7 than if you WC earlier.
    - The transfer window has passed.
    - This period is is historically the most intensive in terms of price rises and falls and it's good to take advantage of them.
    - Could allow you to take advantage of GW8.

Hindsight is a great thing, I used my WC in GW4, and I don't regret it, my team is now in a good position. But I would have preferred to have kept it until around November time.

I am quite happy with my decision, and stand by it.

I had a 70k green arrow, this week.

I myself made a comment on the Champion's League match, saying that I did hope that it restored Agüero's confidence. However, it actually took the tap-in in the first half of the League match to do that.

Many people have compared his situation to Sánchez's which is plain wrong. He had 2 shots on target in 4 games.

The FACT remains he is the best striker in the league playing in an attack minded team and has a history of goals, including top scorer last season.

Wouldn't of cared if he had 1 shot in five, only have to have watched City to see he will score eventually.

just curious as how you can stand by your decision given you would likely have had to take a hit to bring him in this week after missing out on his points last week.

Do you not regret the decision then?

I imagine most on here regret plenty of moves, for instance I got in Gayle instead of Ighalo last week, that was a mistake that I regret.

Let me restate that: how is a lower number of shots better to a higher one? I can imagine one way: the higher one being a result of shooting from a longer distance. But we know that it is Sanchez who shoots more from outside the box, and Aguero who shoots more from the six yards box.

That's the wrong way to make an argument on stats. The low percentage should suggest that things are likely to get better if he just can keep up his numbers of shots from good positions. And lo and behold, that's exactly what happened.

And don't resort to the mystical ingredient of "confidence" like do the clueless commentators who observe football as unexplainable and unpredictable.

And you don't think that Aguero's low shot accuracy over a very small sample is anomalous? You genuinely think he's way worse than a completely mediocre player all of the sudden? It did not occur to you that that number is going to regress towards the mean, and towards his personal mean most likely?

And I already told you one simple factor in this: 7 of those shots were blocked. All of them inside the box, it's 64% of all his shots inside the box blocked.

You're a stubborn bugger Doos, you really are. And you can't dismiss it as "Captain Hindsight" - I, and many others, had these types of conversation with you last week:

              http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/09/30/say-what-6/?hc_page=14#hc_comment_11416199

So I think it's very unfair to say that your analysis was all rooted in fact, and others are simply "lucky" and "captain hindsights", as you have said when, frankly, you were wrong. I know you say it's luck, but we all saw Aguero, know he's the best player in the league, and saw that he would explode soon. You saw otherwise, and you were wrong. Sometimes you need to accept that you aren't always right, and not belittle anyone who disagrees.

I know Butland + Hennessey is good for even less price but heard Speroni can spoil the party...

    Begovic (DDG)
    Kompany, Kolarov, Cresswell (Evans, Targett)
    Payet, Mahrez, Ayew, Eriksen (Redmond)
    Aguero, Martial, Ighalo

    2.5 ITB

How do I get the right ballance in this team? Already done Pedro, Wilson > Eriksen, Ighalo this week.

    GW10: Kolarov > Cheap def
    GM11: Ayew > Big hitter
    GM12: Bego > Cheap backup

Just read through a couple of the hot topics regarding Klopp going to Liverpool, and the poor transfers that Rodgers/Liverpool made. Funny that no one mentions Balotelli once, but he was surely the worst signing for them....ever.

If you have watched the Moneyball film, this is how Liverpool started to buy their players about 5/6 years back, using stats primarily to find hidden value whether the player is young/old, cheap/expensive. The problem is that football is not baseball, but no one at Liverpool seems to understand that.

          • 10 Years

You can perfectly well do moneyball in football, but you have to do it right. Look at Liverpool's transfer history over the last few years, it looks nothing like moneyball!

They clearly haven't quite got the data crunching quite right. One of their very important statistics is how often a player has been injured, which I guess makes Andy Carroll an unlucky decision.

For a starter he would not differentiate players based on "manager signing" and "transfer committee signing".

Now there's a good point - would KDB and Lukaku have developed so well had they not been allowed to leave? You could ask the same of Matic too, before they bought him back.

They may already do this, but shouldn't include a transfer clause whereby they have first refusal if their sold youngsters come good?

And probably something that might well happen this week. Highly unlikely but Chelsea have the potential and Villa are bad enough.

Not gonna happen. Potential yes, but Chelski is a mess at the moment.

I'd be amazed if it was high scoring. They look a shambles so far.

The biggest mistake Mourinho made last season was to take the foot off the gas when they looked as though they would win the title. All the steam went out of the team as he just went for bore draws.
They still haven't recovered and teams aren't even scared off them now.

The biggest problem has been our transfers this season......selling Felipe Luis , the biggest mistake and also not buying a CM/CDM

    Sterling - Silva
    Pedro - Mane/Payet

    Have Naughton and Evans also

      No...very good.

Tinkerman has told the world and his wife that he has a tinker ready for teams with good full backs...and Mahrez isn't included. I don't think he'll miss much time but I think he will miss some.

So I have Mahrez, Redmond, Albrighton & Bojan in my team, with around 5m in the kitty.

Really not sure what to do in terms of formation going forward. What's people's opinions on 3-4-3 vs 3-5-2?

Just seen Ya Ya has dropped 0.2 under what I got him for 🙁
Makes not taking a hit to De Bruyne on Friday more painful.

    Still too many other issues!

    Thoughts on?

    Fabianksi

    Kolarov - Azpilicueta - Bertrand

    Yaya - Mane(VC) - Depay - Sanchez (C)

    Vardy - Gomis - Martial

    Subs:

    McCarthy Cresswell Gomez Albrighton

    Would you bench Bertrand?
