Scout Scribbles – Janmaat Concern for Magpies

Daryl Janmaat withdraws from Holland duties due to a knee complaint. John Stones is ruled out of England’s qualifiers, whilst Wayne Rooney is a doubt. Gareth McAuley is available for Northern Ireland, whilst Switzerland are optimistic on Xherdan Shaqiri’s chances of recovering from a thigh problem.

Janmaat withdraws from Holland Duties

Daryl Janmaat has been ruled out of the Netherlands squad ahead of their Euro qualifiers due to stiffness in his knee. Newcastle have since released a statement confirming they are optimistic that the right-back will be fit to face Norwich City at home next Gameweek.

The Scout Says: In spite of the fact that Newcastle United have claimed just one clean sheet this term and shipped 10 goals in their previous quartet of match-ups, Janmaat remains on our radar because of his supreme underlying statistics. Only Aleksandar Kolarov (one every 62.1 minutes) boasts a better shot frequency than Janmaat (68.1 minutes) among those defenders who’ve made at least four appearances. Furthermore, the marauding Dutchman has amassed two more shots on target (six) than any defender. Considering that the Magpies now enjoy an excellent batch of fixtures through to Gameweek 15 (NOW, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cry), Janmaat could serve as an excellent differential if passed fit for the Canaries clash.

Stones Ruled Out for Three Lions

John Stones – who’s carrying a minor knee injury – will play no part in England’s final pair of Euro 2016 qualifiers after being ruled out yesterday afternoon.

The Scout Says: With Seamus Coleman nearing a return and Leighton Baines closing in on a return, Everton’s defence is slowly getting back to full strength. Fantasy managers will be hoping that Stones recovers swiftly as the Toffees gear up for an exceptional run of fixtures from Gameweek 11 (SUN, whu, AVL, bou, CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO). For now, Phil Jagielka (5.4) presents the safest route into their rearguard, while Tim Howard (5.1) – who’s ten points clear of any Everton defenders by virtue of eight save points and four bonus points – should pique the interest of anyone scouring the market for a shot-stopper. Ultimately, the fact that the Merseysiders conceded an average of one goal per match through the opening eight Gameweeks – despite facing off against six of last term’s top eight outfits – bodes well for their clean-sheet prospects over a kinder stretch.

Rooney Worry for Hodgson

Wayne Rooney, Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey all missed training for England yesterday, with the United skipper rated a doubt for Friday’s clash with Estonia after picking up a knock against Arsenal.

The Scout Says: With England already through to Euro 2016, it seems unlikely that Rooney will be risked for the Three Lions. The United skipper’s record-breaking displays on the international front have masked his domestic toils, which have seen him score just once in the league this term. The arrival of Anthony Martial has forced Rooney into a central support role at United, and although their fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 11, Martial and Juan Mata – who has scored or assisted in five of the last seven – look the likeliest routes into Louis van Gaal’s attack.

McAuley Fit for Northern Ireland

Gareth McAuley has been given the go-ahead to play for Northern Ireland during the international break – the defender has been passed fit after suffering a recurrence of a calf complaint against Crystal Palace last weekend. Meanwhile, Baggies team-mate Jonny Evans is still touch-and-go for his nation’s crunch tie against Greece on Thursday.

The Scout Says: Although West Brom’s flawless road record came to an end at the hands of the Eagles, the West Midlanders remain a fine source of mid-priced defensive assets in light of Tony Pulis’ resilient brand of football. Craig Dawson remains the prime pick among the back four owing to his security of starts and fitness, while Boaz Myhill ranks second in the keeper rankings for total score (41). Both will continue to be in high demand as they embark on a favourable trio of match-ups (SUN, nor, LEI). The trip to Carrow Road is arguably the sternest test on paper, yet investors in West Brom’s rearguard will be emboldened by the fact that only Southampton (21) have conceded fewer shots inside the box in away matches than the Baggies (22).

Swiss Optimistic on Shaqiri

Having sat out Stoke City’s 1-0 road win over Aston Villa due to a thigh strain, Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to be passed fit for Switzerland’s Euro qualifiers, according to head coach Vladimir Petkovic:

“I have no doubt about the condition of Shaqiri. He will play on Friday (against San Marino).”

The Scout Says: Priced at 6.8 in the wake of a 0.2 depreciation, Shaqiri has failed to establish himself as contender in the mid-priced midfielder bracket. Turning out for a Stoke outfit that’s tallied just eight goals in as many matches, the former Bayern Munich recruit lays claim to a solitary assist across 407 minutes. Moreover, his underlying statistics don’t particularly portend imminent attacking returns, with just two shots on target and seven key passes arriving this campaign. Those managers yearning for Potters coverage ahead of a decent trio of encounters (swa, WAT, new) might consider the 6.0-priced Marko Arnautovic, who – apart from notching two goals and assists – places top among Stoke’s midfielders for attempts (11), shots on target (four) and key passes (nine).

A few questions guys. Please bear with me.

    1) Is Hoolahan's injury serious? 😕

    2) If Evans may play against Finland so he could be match fit for Sunderland?

    3) Still not sure if to do Pedro > Mane -4. Have Pelle.

    Help. Please.

I am a dyed in the wool 3-4-3 FPL player, but this season I am becoming less and less able to see the logic behind it. Every year I ride out the inevitable mini-3-5-2 bandwagons, and the strikers generally prevail (bar maybe the Power 5 for a spell in 2011-12), but at this moment I am seriously contemplating a switch to 3-5-2. Payet and Walcott are the main reasons - I simply can't get either in a 3-4-3.

Any other hardened 3-4-3 proponents in the same position?

I can't see the need for 352 at the moment. Maybe that's due to how my team is set up

      KdB wally Sanchez Mahrez
      Martial Aguero Vardy

Martial may go soon. I'd like Payet and mane but considering the prices who can you drop to fit them in? I'd rather have Lukaku than mane or Payet.

This may sound strange, but since 3 years I've always played 3-4-3. Always feel the striker from a small club can score anytime. This year too, my 5th mid is Ritchie, with a front 3 of Aguero, Vardy, Pelle.

I'm the same, never ever played 3-5-2 in the last 2 years barring injury, but with Mahrez, it means a proper 5 man midfield can be set up. I may end up getting Pelle or Lukaku alongside Vardy and Aguero, or stick with Martial, but 5 in midfield is very tempting.

I'm concerned about last week's business with Mahrez, though. It won't happen every week, but nor will it be a one-off. Norwich is hardly a team that you make drastic changes for.

I've been 3-4-3 forever but stacked my midfield during my GW3 wildcard, alongside Aguero and Diouf. I picked up Wilson as my third striker shortly after so had him for a couple of weeks, blagging my way through the benching dilemmas but when Wilson was injured I ditched to a 4.3m nobody; i'm set on 3-5-2 now.

As much as i'd like Aguero, Pelle and Lukaku in a few weeks, i'm going to go for Mane as my Saints coverage and play him with Sanch, Payet, Ayew, and Mahrez. If form changes i'll reconsider, but for now i'm enjoying all these extra points and BAPS for very advanced midfielders in very attacking teams. I haven't even mentioned Mata, KDB/Silva and Cabaye either...

Thanks all, interesting to see the different tactics. I have my WC still so I will have a dilemma when I use it, leaving out Payet/Walcott would prove difficult (not ditching Sanchez, Mane or KDB, and Mahrez will stay if he returns to the team).

Isn't this the perfect week to use your Wildcard? A two week period after a huge gw could mean a lot of knee jerk which translates into lots of price rises.

Not for me, I don't WC just for price rises, and I'm very happy with my team at the moment.

          Butland/Ruddy
          Kolarov/Dawson/Huth/Francis/Nyom
          Sanchez/KDB/Mane/Mahrez/Westwood
          Aguero/Martial/Vardy

Not much I'd change there, and I want to use it to set myself up for Christmas.

I think it's Mahrez vs Vardy

Exactly my dilemma too, currently with Vardy benched. Saints away is never easy.

Vardy can't keep scoring every game. Mahrez will be back, on pens and set pieces and looking to prove a point.

        Like your thinking.

I benched Mahrez in GW1 and told to myself "never again" 🙂

On the other hand Vardy is extension of Mahrez. Often both provide (Mahrez assists and Vardy scores).

Maybe I'll just flip a coin.

I would appreciate a bit of early game week advice please guys,
    My current team is;

    ……………………….Ruddy…………………………
    ……….Souare………Sagna…..Richards……………..
    Hoolahan…….De Bruyne……..Coutinho……Sanchez
    ………..Martial……Aguero…….Sakho…………….

    Subs………..McCarthy / Darmian / Targett / Albrighton

I made a hasty transfer on Sunday night from Pedro to KDB so anything now will involve a hit(s).
    I am thinking of the following options;

    A) Sagna > Janmatt
    B) Darmian > Janmatt (play above in place of Richards / Sagna)
    C) Albrighton > Morrison (WBA) and play AoA with Souare and Richards at the back
    D) Coutinho > Tadic
    E) Do nothing

For what its worth my move of choice is (C) or (E) – then all being well the following week I would do Darmian > Nyom giving me enough cash for Sakho > Lukaku in GW 11. And if I go with (E) and do nothing then I can take a hit in GW 11 and do Coutinho to Mane. None of this fixes the Sagna issue but…….

All thoughts welcome and I obviously know that injuries will probably ruin this long term view.

    Myhill, McCartney

    Sagna, Azpi, Dawson, Targett, Oxford

    Sanchez, KDB, Mahrez, Ayew, Ritchie

    Aguero, Vardy, Pelle.
Already did Gomis > Pelle. Does this lot require a -4?

Hey gents, Thoughts on this bunch plz ?

    Butland - (McCarthy)
    Kolarov - Darmian - Richards - (Targett - Muniesa)
    Sanchez - Payet - Mahrez - Yaya - (Hoolahan)
    Aguero - Vardy - Gomis
    1FT - 2.1M

Defence is shambles I know :/ - After dropping Mahrez last GW I have no idea if he ll make the starting XI?

    A. Mahrez > Mane
    B. Yaya > Mane
    C. Gomis > Pele
    D. Yaya + Gomis > Mane + Pele (-4)

    Arsenal fixtures:
    Watford (away)
    Bayern
    Everton (home)
    Shef Wed- capital one cup
    Swansea (away)
    Bayern
    Tottenham (home)

Walcott won't play the Sheffield Wed game, but will he start the others? I'm not too sure. I'd imagine he would start the Everton, Bayern (home and away), Tottenham games. Not confident he starts Watford, Swansea games. That's why I can't bring myself to transfer Walcott in. If they lose to Bayern at home then I will probably reconsider but for now, there's too much uncertainty

I suspect he will play at Watford for 60/70 mins. It is pretty obvious that Theo is the main striker now, and he will only field a weaker team in the cup games.

Watford isn't an easy game and he will want to continue the momentum that Theo is giving the team.

Well done to those who have had Theo the last couple matches, but I wouldn't be bringing him in. Giroud is down on confidence and Wenger will want to start him in at least one of those league matches. There is a chance Theo could take Ramsey's role on the right

Yeh, may just do Diouf>Iggy/Ayoze and then reconsider next week. Just worried taht Pelle will tear Leicester a new one, i have never owned him either.

Cresswell not worth his price currently and have some poor fixtures coming up. Soare just seems the best option for £4.5, will rarely play him anyway

Like Wakey I'm not sure how to answer this. I switch between formations, but when I play 4 in the middle it won't be him that drops out, it'll be Alli.

I mean he might be my '3rd' mid, I'm not sure how I'd rate them.

I'm not selling Mahrez, and I don't think Ranieri will drop him regularly, but what concerns me is that the tactic surely won't be a one-off, especially as it will be deemed a success. Norwich is hardly a team that you make drastic changes for. Yet he did.

Yes it underlines the importance of a strong squad. Probably best to have 8 good attackers as there could be a little forced rotation between them at times.

Right. I plunked for a good 5th mid (Redmond) but with him not getting the minutes, I need to rectify. I wanted to do Matial to Pelle, and I still probably will, but I need to address that soon.

I went for Dele Alli but that might have been a little hasty...sounds like Mason and Bentelab are both due back and are threats to him.

Hooperman had a hot topic about best Nor mids...was it Brady he picked out? Might be worth digging that up.

only problem with Brady is he can play left back or left mid, jervis got the nod in the midfield slot last game so Brady is reverse OOP a lot of the time

Ah true. That's the trade-off for his extra security of starts.

yeah, even as left back he still gets forward but I personally prefer Hoolihan, he plays further forward and is having a very good season.

            he picked Brady and Hooligan

I went for Hool, played all of the last game so seems to be nailed and his having a wonder season

I think he suggested hold redmond if you have him, but now seems his position is least secure.

he said olssan and brady battle it out over left back, if olssan gets nod then brady goes mid, if he prefers jarvis in mid, brady is left back.

Hooligan comes off early a lot and has only missed one full game (maybe he was injured) so seems like he should play the bulk of the games.

this is why having a bench fodder midfielder doesnt work, especially this season with so many good cheap midfielders.

lots of people say having power 8 is a benching headache, but I would rather bench points than be forced to play a 1 or 2 pointer

Im absolutely fine with a mid bench fodder, have decent defender to come in and ur set. Just put the cheapest mid as 3rd sub and there you go. In any case its working out decently for me

Absolutely, give me the headache any week. The AoA chip can help if you get really stuck for benching someone, albeit only once.

exactly. you won't get your picks right every week but should get it right most of the time, or hope both players get points and then it doesnt really matter.

Really unsure on my next move, doing OK in my mini leagues lurking around the top in all, around 280k overall.

Don't know whether to upgrade Gomis and stay with a 5th midfielder 2 pointer or downgrade him and upgrade 5th midfielder.

This will be after GW9 though to get 2 free transfers - team currently as below -

    But land Myhill
    Francis kolorov Richards ward williams
    Sanchez hazard mahraz payet surman
    Gomis Kun vardy

    0.2 itb
A - hazard surman gomis to silva mane ighalo
B - hazard gomis Richards to pelle silva Bertrand

    Cheers alll

Still undecided, and in the meantime I've lost 0.1 on Gomis (now 7.0) and prices have risen for players I'm interested to transfer in.

    My team:

    Clyne - Kolarov - Francis - Huth - Richards

    Sanchez - KDB - Payet - Mahrez - Westwood

    Aguero - Vardy - Gomis

    1 FT, 0.9 ITB

    A) Mane and Ighalo for for -8 (I have to transfer out Clyne also to free up funds for this)
As much as I would like to have Mane for LEI game, -8 points, and with Ighalo playing ARS, I just don't have crazy courage to do this. This would give me really strong front 8, and Ighalo on the bench.

    B) Mane and Striker up to 6.2 for Mahrez and Gomis for -4. Is Mahrez safe starter or not?

    C) Clyne for Bellerin. After BOU I'm also transferring out Kolarov for Janmaat and then for GW11 and after I want to get Lukaku for Gomis. His price won't drop under 7.0 I hope, so I won't lose anything on him. If Payet drops in form, get Mane in his place.

    D) Gomis to Pelle for -4. I don't fancy this either. Gomis plays STO and Lukaku has good fixtures from GW11 onwards

Any thoughts? Any other way for me to get Mane?

Anyone else worried Lukaku might have changed this year? So far he's been quite consistent, and I always thought he was a good young striker who is close to becoming world class if he just improved his finishing etc. Sure he has the potential to burn you, but I think he can finally score consistently against 'easier' opposition from what I've seen of him

no doubt I will be getting him soon..probably in gw11.

though ighalo and vardy are very hard to drop at the moment..not to mention he is quite expensive to afford when u have sanchez aguero KDB etc in team

He's next weeks transfer for me, so I hope so. I think he will outscore similar priced options (Pelle, Gomis, Benteke) by the end of the season. He's scored 60 goals in his last 129 Prem games, and he's only 22! He will continue to get better.

he's a complicated player to assess. He was rubbish against West Brom for most of the game but then came alive and won the game for Everton.
In 2013/2014 when Everton were in similar form, I think he blanked 9 times in 24 games between Sept- March.
