The Digest – Gameweek 26

Sunderland’s bid to beat the drop gains momentum thanks to their new playmaker. Liverpool look a different side as the treatment room starts to finally empty, whilst we ponder whether a temporary transfer out for Sergio Aguero could prove beneficial to our three-man frontlines.

The Player

If Sam Allardyce is to retain his proud record of having never tasted top-flight relegation, it’s fair to say that the performances of Sunderland new boy Wahbi Khazri are already looking crucial to his chances.

The Tunisian arrived from Bordeaux last month with five goals and seven assists in just 20 Ligue 1 appearances – only PSG’s Angel di Maria had teed up his team-mates more often in the French top division.

In his first start for the Wearsiders, Khazri earned both assists in a 2-2 comeback draw at Liverpool before maintaining momentum in Saturday lunchtime’s 2-1 home win over United. After firing a free-kick opener just two minutes into the match, Khazri’s dead-ball delivery again proved the undoing of United’s defence and led to the Black Cats’ vital second strike as they moved to just one point from safety.

Khazri tormented the Red Devils last weekend, producing five attempts on goal and creating as many chances as he wastes no time in bringing his Ligue 1 form to Wearside. At a price of 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s racked up 20 points in his two appearances in Allardyce’s starting XI – serving a reminder that at this time of year, there’s value to be had near the basement as the battle to beat the drop intensifies.

They may be an unlikely pairing but, as already evidenced, Big Sam’s love of set-pieces and Khazri’s dead-ball ability looks the perfect combination.

Given that they’ve just taken four points off Liverpool and United, Sunderland seem full of confidence right now. With West Ham, Palace, Everton, Newcastle and West Brom in the next six Gameweeks, Khazri has the platform to wreak further havoc as his manager looks set to plot yet another great escape.

The Team

Despite turning in some stellar showings since the appointment of Jurgen Klopp back in October, Liverpool’s on-pitch performances have failed to match their remarkable consistency for picking up injuries.

Indeed, the former Dortmund manager has had to wait until the eighteenth league match of his tenure – away to Villa on Sunday – before he could unleash Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge in the same starting XI.

The 6-0 annihilation of Remi Garde’s charges showcased the capabilities of an injury-free Klopp side. Whilst Sturridge bagged a goal and Coutinho created three assists on his way to 15 points, though, Firmino’s single assist indicates that he may suffer from the tactical reshuffle – having been fielded as a “false nine”, the weekend switch to 4-2-3-1 may not be to his liking.

Sunday’s result also points to a better balance. Although they’d registered big away wins at Chelsea, City and Norwich, Liverpool had never managed to score more than one goal in the league without conceding under Klopp. With Sturridge playing on the shoulder and the two Brazilians prompting proceedings in support roles, the Reds finally racked up the points at both ends of the pitch.

Granted, Villa are anything but a litmus test for Liverpool’s Fantasy potential but Sunday’s showing will only breed confidence ahead of a run that hands them four home matches in six (MCI, cpl, CHE, sou, TOT, STO) once their blank Gameweek 27 has passed. Given they have already put four past City and scored three times at the Bridge, Liverpool will hold little fear heading into those encounters – all the more so if they can take advantage of the former’s leaky defence in the upcoming Capital One Cup final prior to the resumption of league duties.

The Talking Point

Having notched four times at home to Spurs in the corresponding fixture last season, Sergio Aguero was the standout armband candidate for many Fantasy managers heading into the weekend deadline.

This time around, though, the Argentine failed to register a single attempt on target as City suffered a damaging 2-1 defeat that may well have killed their title ambitions. Damningly, the Etihad outfit have earned just six points in 10 matches against the top eight sides so far, scoring 11 times and conceding 20.

With City now set for a blank Gameweek 27 due to their Capital One Cup final duties, many are considering their short-term options and the idea of a temporary move out for Aguero is starting to gather pace. As discussed in Jonty’s Hot Topic yesterday, there’s method to this train of thought. City then face a trip to Liverpool in Gameweek 28 and also entertain United in Gameweek 31.

Such a scenario would leave them with just two favourable fixtures – a home clash with Villa in Gameweek 29 and trip to Norwich the following weekend – in the next five rounds of matches. Furthermore, if they defeat Chelsea in the FA Cup this weekend, that clash with the Canaries will need to be postponed, too, lessening Aguero’s appeal further.

A transfer out for Aguero would, of course, be a temporary affair and merely a means of playing the fixtures at such a tricky time of year. Aside from his blank against Spurs, the Argentine has seemed close to his best again – banging in four goals in as many matches. Looking at the form forwards in FPL, though, both Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane have bettered Aguero in the last four Gameweeks, whilst Diego Costa has equalled his output.

Vardy, along with United pair Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial (who both outscored Aguero in the last three Gameweeks), now has three home fixtures in the next four. Kane, meanwhile, has two home fixtures and a trip to whipping boys Villa over that same period.

Providing your squad is in shape to deal with the upcoming blanks, saying cheerio to Sergio for the short-term and plotting a course to draft him back in may not be as crazy as it seems.

there are no outstanding mids for that price, if you downgrade Filipe Luis to Gimenez you can get Gaitan or Saul

would you go without Gaitan? I watched the Porto game and he was pretty dangerous but it does bother me that I have no Atletico cover

Atletico mids are too expensive and PSV is tight at the back.

Pizzi is 2m cheaper playing as winger (comparing to Gaitan)

        Top goalscorer odds:

        Vardy - 2.64
        Kane - 5.4
        Aguero - 5.9
        Lukaku - 7.0
        Ighalo - 34
        Mahrez - 36
        Giroud - 46
        Costa - 60

        Any value there? Probably not.

            Five behind now.

This, plus I think Messi is somewhat of a differential at this point due to his high price. Don't like the idea of losing him, can wreak havoc anytime. What are your thoughts on my team Trinzoo?

To answer your question on Saul, I think he's a fairly priced pick from Atletico and tends to go forward quite often. I would've pick Ferreira-Carrasco but he's out injured.

                D. Costa - great pick, I'm afraid Juve will play for double 0-0 but will see how it ends...

                  D. Costa still could be 2 players, I'm sure everyone knows who you mean but the D is unnecessary unless you spell their whole first name

I agree with you except for Gimenez, those were group stages I don't think Simeone will play Savic now (I could be wrong tho since it's "just" PSV)

Carvajal and Costa are good picks going ahead and we don't get many FTs or do you think it will be worth taking alot of hits?

We get 6 free transfers after this round so if you try and pick players from sides you think are going thru, I don't think many hits should be necessary.

                    How's your team looking 420?

We only get 1 for the reverse fixture though and 6 after the round is over.

My team is pretty generic but not finished yet until I find my third striker and decide if I'm going with Messi or Suarez

Right, but you shouldn't need to change a lot of players for the next matchday since the matchups are the same. Most of my players are actually playing away this fixture and home the reverse one, so I think I wouldn't need a lot of changes unless injuries force me to. At least that's the plan.. lol

Thanks Trinzoo! Bad luck with Gimenez hehe but I think he's pretty nailed.

Carvajal, maybe not going to keep a CS but he's been a monster the last few games and I very much rate him, plus he is cheap and from a top team which I think will go through this stage.

Costa I think is a big threat regardless of the opponent and at 8.0 I think he's a bargain.

Lot's of ways to make sure you can make it a no lose bet.

Easiest way is to back PSG/Chelsea Double Chance and then in play back the draw.

Or for a small risk back over 0.5 goals and then back something at greater odds in play (first goalscorer/correct score) and as long as a goal is scored you don't lose

            I normally do Both Teams To Score First Half as follows;

Pregame put £50 on BTTS first half NO. As soon as the game starts put £50 on BTTS first half YES.

All eventualities are now covered. If both teams dont score first half you'll make about £10 but if they do you'll make a decent amount depending on the odds. £70-£150 normally.

I have a BET365 account. They are always throwing out offers , this one is not great . Have patience and a better one will come along soon. They know this match is dodgy that's why there is this offer and they stand to lose very little .

You can still easily make it a gaurenteed win, with no risk of a lose.

              I myself am going for the below;

              Pre game
              Bet on over 0.5, 50 returns 54
              In play
              50 on PSG 3-1 returns 750

7 pre game side bet on 0-0 returns 59

Either up 9 profit if 0-0
down 3 if over 0.5 but not 3-1
              Up 690 if 3-1

I don't mind losing 3 euro but it would be great if 3-1 came in. massive win for risking 3 euro.

GK Navas, 3 mil bench fodder
DEF Otamendi, Rodriguez(wolf), Eliseu, Antunes(Kiev) 3 mil Bench fodder
MID Ozil, Willian, Gatain, Draxler, 3.5 mil bench fodder
          FWD Dzyuba, Messi, Ronaldo

Gatain or Dzyuba C first night
          Ronaldo C second night
          Messi C 3rd night
Otamendi C 4th night at a last resort

Alternatives are Modric and Douglas Costa for Will i an/Draxler, but Draxler hitting form.

Tough choices. I have no bayern so costa is appealing. May well sack ozil or will i an off to try and get aguero in

        Ward to Targett?

Ward looks set to drop, Targett will have a fixture in GW30. Only thing making me think twice are injury concerns this weekend and Targett's apparent non-guaranteed start.

Mesut Ozil vs the Top 5 this season:
        Leicester: 2 assists
        Spurs: 1 assist
        Man City: 2 assists
Man Utd: 1 goal, 1 assist

But apparently he goes missing in big games.

Having used Balders's excellent GW30 tool, I've realised 3 of my defenders are almost certain to blank (likely 4). Bearing that in mind, would I be best off actually using one of my 2FTs this week on a defender? I only have Wijnaldum and Aguero blanking, and was set on selling Wijnaldum, but he does have a GW30 fixture. I could play 4 at the back, sell one non-playing GW30 defender, and then use all transfers up to GW30 on sorting my team out for then?

        Butland/Hennessey
        Bellerin/Alde/VVD/Dawson/Nyom
        Ozil/Mahrez/Alli/Payet/Wijnaldum

This is one of those weeks where you wish FPL would let you carry over 3FTs...

Indeed, though I do have a few good defensive fixtures, and there are no Wijnaldum replacements that particularly appeal. Siggy would do but for his dreadful next 2, and I can't get Eriksen. Just wondering whether using a FT to sell someone with a GW30 fixture is foolish.

Indeed, I'm hoping it works in our favour, it's a good time to be an FPL obsessive. The way this season has gone though, all meticulous plans will blow up in our faces.

Your team will still look good after this week if you only swap out a defender.

Playing the long game is good. If you make a "luxury" move this week (e.g. Wij to Siggy) and then someone gets injured next week you'll wish you hadn't wasted the FT.

Aye, though that could also apply if I bring in a defender who gets injured 😉 As you say, rolling over 3 FTs would be lovely.

                  I've cracked it.

Bring in lots of MCI and EVE players - they definitely won't get injured!

        Next 3 league games:
        United (a)
        Swansea (h)
        Spurs (a)

7 points needed out of those 3, no reason why we can't go to Old Trafford and win

Hoping that last minute winner v Leicester gives us some sort of confidence to kick on. But we need to start converting chances at a higher rate than we currently are.

I bought him on FM13 on my Kindle, great potential but didn't kick on after an injury and I sold him. His career stalled, a wasted talent.

As FM always matches reality, I expect exactly that to happen (along with Yaya Sanogo winning World Player of the Year).

Ahh Kallstrom, like when the Champ Man legend Ibrahim Bakayoko joined Everton, and turned out to not quite be Pele.

I was genuinely convinced that Arsenal had hit absolute gold when they signed Sanogo. I told all of my mates that he'd be the next big thing, and told someone who said he was rubbish that they were clueless. I had never seen him play, I was basing it all on him being a record-breaking, multiple World Player of the Year, goal machine for my all-conquering Everton side on FM11.

Babacar and Sanogo was my strikeforce on that FM11 save, absolutely unstoppable, both breaking goal records all over the place. Messi, Suarez and Neymar wouldn't stand a chance.

I have an antepost five fold that ends with Germany winning the Euros however I am slightly unconvinced now (especially as the rest are all still possible)

          Arsenal - PL winners
          Palace - top half finish
          Boro - Promotion
          Juve - Serie A winners
          Germany - Euros

Top scorer will be a bit of a lottery with so many bad teams in the tournament - someone could easily do a Salenko against a crap team like NI or Hungary

Wait until just before the tournament. The bookies always chuck out a few enhanced odds offers. There inevitably will be a few major injuries to key players at which point the overall picture will become much clearer.

Spain also big favourites if Costa is in form

Indeed, but all of those players were there 2 years ago! Has Germany's squad notably declined? And then there's Spain...

And they can only fit 3 central midfielders in, so while they have a wealth of options there, it isn't the be all and end all. I haven't seen Ribery play well since 2013 (I never thought he was that good, but I know I'm in the minority). Martial and Giroud are good, but are they as good as Muller and co?

Benzema is quality - is he still in the France squad after the Valbuena thing?

Got back from Dortmund last night... what a great city.

The citizens are compeltely football mad, you have no idea. On Saturday (match day), i'm not even exaggerating, 90% were donning Dortmunds colours. 500,000 people in the City and they fill an 80,000 seater stadium every week! Incredible stuff. Strongly reccomend you all go visit if you're a football fan 🙂

Beer and sausages were decent too!

England strikers for Euro 2016 is gonna be interesting - Roy loves Rooney (almost unhealthily), but Vardy and Kane must almost be undroppable at the moment - and then what about Sturridge if he is fully fit?
