The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You don't need them if the cheaper forwards are firing. However at the start of the season it's better to go with a balanced approach because you jump onto the form players a lot quicker. If you have two expensive forwards you can downgrade to a better performing one a lot easier than the other way around.

As an everton fan pointed out to me preseason (which I ignored) Deulofeu nearly always gets subbed in games so he is really only playing 70min instead of 90 most weeks.

You could easily get it wrong as to who you think will score the highest each week. As you did for gw1, choosing vardy over ibra. On top of that you are stuck with the same defence and midfield for 3 weeks when changes might be due without taking hits. Just an observation. Its your team, your decisions at the end of the day

Yea your right I could easily get it wrong. And to be honest I've changed my mind about the ibra idea now anyway after reading through most people's replays.

Like I've said, I feel I was trying to play the fixtures, when I'm best of sticking with people who have a history of performing (Kane).

Yep average positioning nearly identical to Zlatan and stats leap off the page in comparison. Seriously considering doubling on them both.

                Nice team, good start.

I went the Kun Vardy Gray route myself.

Now feeling like I want Ibra definitely by Hull so will likely save this week.

Although what do you think of this.

Firmino & Vardy out gw3 who in?

                A. Lamela & Ibrahimovic.
                B. Martial & Rooney.

Gotta wait and see what information you can get from GW2. I don't love the idea of mugging Firm off just yet even though he was poor overall today he nearly got points. I don't mind either A or B though I like both combos.

What was everyone thoughts on Zlatan. Solid points return in his first game with United getting three goal even if one was handed to them by Francis. I currently have Kane and with the better fixture of the two I will keep him for gameweek two. However surely if the same thing happens next week we all will be getting Zlatan for the Hull game.

Do any Kane owners plan on switching?

Have Kane and the exact money to bring Zlatan in. Gonna hang on to him for one more week though. If Zlatan outperforms him again I can always use the two fts I'll then have to bring Ibra in for the Hull game.

Tbh the main reason I picked Kane was as a GW2 captaincy option. Stupid to get cold feet now, I think.

There was an invited guest on the scoutcast last year who was doing well in the fpl.
His tactic was to "wait and see" each week.
Try and carry over a transfer from one week if possible and make no more then one transfer each week.

My tactic was fixtures/form/chase value and be willing to take hits, mainly because I started terribly.
You have to ask yourself is a hit worth it long term 4/5 weeks?

As for those moves you listed I do not like any of them!
I think Sanchez to Ramirez/Martial might be a good move though

This is my current line-up going into gw 2

    de Gea

    Dann/Alderweireld/Fuchs/Gibson

    Firmino/Alli/Mahrez/Tadic

    Vardy/Ibrahimovic

    Bench
    Robinson/Gamboa/Watson/Vydra

Should I keep this team for another week or two and see how things go or use my WC and change things up.

    Fuchs out for Kingsley
    Alderweireld out for Walker
    Tadic out for Barkley
    Firmino out for Coutinho
    Vardy out for Agüero
Do you think that Mahrez is worth keeping to see how he performs.

IMO you shouldn't WC so early cos it could end up messing you up when your previous team do well. The only thing I would do was get rid of Alder to Walker to get some ITB. Being Kunless is also dangerous. Your proposed wc could work really well or really badly but it's up to u.

    3. GUNNERINHO
      • 10 Years

Don't panic. Wait for more intel.

Keep WC until after GW3 complete. Use a transfer and a hit if you think adjustment is urgent.

You have strong team, but bench is weak - pick Capoue.

Hold Tadic, Firmino and Mehrez. Don't judge on just one game.
