Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 3

On a busy transfer deadline day, we bring the curtain down on Gameweek 3, pondering the prospects of City’s renaissance man, whilst surveying the options in the light of yesterday’s FA bombshell.

The Player

Alexis Sanchez deserves a mention but, for his continued ascent under Pep Guardiola, we have to doff our caps to Raheem Sterling.

Having simmered with a pair of assists in his opening two Gameweeks, Sterling’s contribution in Sunday’s win over West Ham United was emphatic.

An extra yard of pace, a renewed willingness to take on his defender – Sterling was already rekindling past performances from his bygone Liverpool days.

Now with two goals to his name, the City wide man will surely be flowing with confidence ahead of the biggest stage of all – a Manchester derby.

We should have reservations when discussing what is still a developing talent.

Sterling can go missing, he could quickly swing back to mediocrity but the underlying numbers and the role he’s playing in Guardiola’s system certainly provide room for optimism.

Now priced at 8.2 and rising, Sterling’s form is out of the bag and the masses have caught on.

Experienced heads may resist being turned by a unpredictable talent, but Sterling appears to be key component of Guardiola’s plans and in a fluid attacking system, is producing statistics to rival even the top bracket strikers.

The Team

After picking up one point in the first two Gameweeks, Arsenal finally found their mojo with a 3-1 destruction of Watford on Saturday.

Alexis Sanchez’ 16-point return, courtesy of a goal and two assists, served a timely reminder of his talents as the Gunners prepare for an inviting run of fixtures that will surely invite investment.

Mesut Ozil also notched at Vicarage Road and looks the likeliest to rival Sanchez for our affections. His consistency on his way to a 19 assist return last season is still fresh in our memory – he’s the plodding Fantasy talent to Sanchez’ explosive but unpredictable returns.

In a season where new grappling laws have already boosted the number of spot-kicks, Santi Cazorla – as evidenced on Saturday – may also emerge as a viable option if, as expected, he cements his start.

Then we’ve got the impact of new signing Lucas Perez to consider – a potentially intriguing option as an 8.5 forward.

Suddenly the Arsenal attack is alive.

At the back, there’s also room for optimism, with fellow new boy Shkodran Mustafi expected to shore up an uncertain and unsettled rearguard.

We remain sceptical on their title credentials given the strength of the opposition gathering, but Wenger’s side are certainly back on the radar as a source of Fantasy talent.

That begins in Gameweek 4, where Sanchez and Ozil present viable captain options.

The Talking Point

Whilst deadline day is a major distraction, news of Sergio Aguero’s FA charge for an “alleged” act of violent conduct is still sinking in.

It seems likely that the charge will be upheld and that Aguero will accepted a three-match ban which will see him sit out the Manchester derby and the Gameweek 5 Etithad clash with Bournemouth.

His 51% ownership must now consider their options.

Benching Aguero over the next two Gameweeks is one route available, but having his funds in reserve is surely debilitating when there will be those re-investing his millions back into their squads.

In addition, Aguero’s price will likely drop, possibly by 0.3 or more by the time he returns for Gameweek 6. By benching him, we would be turning down an easy route to making perhaps 0.2 in funds; even that little could prove precious over the season.

The Wildcard looks the way to go. Without it we can swap out the Argentine but we can’t maximise the funds he liberates without a second free transfer or by taking a points hit.

With a Wildcard active, Aguero’s cash can be used to perhaps land Diego Costa or Romelu Lukaku, with change available to upgrade a mid-price midfielder to either Sanchez or Ozil.

That’s an intoxicating possibility that’s hard to resist which perhaps also offers up a new Gameweek 4 captaincy option.

The only danger is that we will get used to having Aguero’s funds distributed throughout our squads, paving the way for us to start questioning re-acquiring the Argentine for Gameweek 6.

So my current line up looks like:
    Foster
    Baines-Collins-Valencia
    Haz-Sanchez-Mirallas--Townsend
    Dio-Kun-Ibra

With the WC already active,I intend replace Townsend and Kun with Luka and Ozil. Then its Ozil vs Sanchez and Luka vs Ibra. The winners gets to stay while the losers get shipped out for Aguero and perhaps Pereyra.

    Lukaku vs Costa.

Although Lukaku has better fixtures but what you want from them are just two games anyway because after all we are going to take one of them out for Aguero.
Costa has a better form right now and facing Swansea for next game. Chelsea is a better team than Everton when going forward and supported with better players.
I think I will go for Costa if it's just for Aguero's temporary replacement.

I've not had a lightweight forward line since I had

Lukaku Benteke and Mirallas when they first arrived (Mirallas was listed as a fwd)

I think I could happily do another lightweight fwd line now. Got to be better than having the same team as the other two in my (very) mini league.

I had that last year - my ML rival (who I eventually trounced due to proper WC/chip strategy) had all my front 7 and the same goalkeeper for vast swathes of the season.

Just makes it boring if your captain delivers but it's their captain too... along with your differentials being theirs too!

        Yeah it's kak.

If it's only a small league you can do well with any strategy. The problem is calling a regular (c) pick week in and week out....which you can't do without somebody like Aguero.

You have to be prepared to sacrifice a good OR for a better mini league game...

Tempted by Zaza at 7.0 as my accompanying transfer to get Sanchez in for my -4 will be Kun and Cook (BOU) out to play either a 3-5-2 or AoA if Gray is injured.

Don't want to wildcard just yet. Every year my seemingly "awful" pre-WC team does much better than my post-WC team so I'm not quite buying that it's dire straits yet. A couple more injuries would send me over, though...

Thoughts on Zaza? Will be the main man there, good fixtures, unknown quantity element too. Lots in his favour perceivably...

Tried but he went to Leverkusen for a bigger wage. Now he's worth like 30m 🙁

If I am for a punt, Zaza is first on my list...

Cheers Stachman - yeah I feel like I might as well

Kun (if out) + Cook (4.5, not playing) --> Sanchez and Zaza isn't bad at all for a -4, leaves me with this cobbled together line up:

        Heaton
        Stones Morgan Shaw
        Mirallas Hazard Redmon Eriksen Sanchez
        Zaza Ibra

4.0 / Gray (if banned - if not, AoA); Fernandez; Amat

Could do a -8 to do Williams in for Fernandez, but it doesn't seem worth it!

What dyu reckon? I know it looks **** but I kind of want to keep my WC to get Kun back IN later on rather than do it now

    A) Ozil and Antonio

Would Lamela really be better than Antonio given the WHU fixtures in upcoming weeks?

I know this is an odd question, but would you prefer:

    A) Sanchez and Stones (+ 4.5 mid)

    B) Firmino and Coutinho (+4.1 def)

Already have Ibra, Haz, Ozil + Sterling.

Wish they didn't do price rises and drop till after the transfer window... There's so much math now!

Best gray replacement? (if as expected banned) £7 mill or under, for -4. 0.1 short of Defoe, Innachio a 2 game option?

Have I missed some big Aguero news? I thought he was just missing some qualifiers for Argentina? Is he out long term?

Greetings gents. A question that hopefully can be answered by the intelligentsia that roam these forums. Aguero is priced at 13.1 currently. If one bought him at 13.0, and his price then drops back to 13.0, what is his resale value in this circumstance? 13.0 or 12.9?

      Yeah - 13.0

Thank you. In that case, unless one decides to WC, I reckon you're best holding out as long as possible to see if the price drop can be avoided. The 'secret formula' of the fpl price moves should be accounting now for his calf injury possibly? Mahrez has been a dead cert for a price drop for about 5 days now and still hasn't happened. I really don't want to take the 4ph, so let's see if this price drop bullet can be avoided

You're better holding until you know exactly how long he's out.

Not sure how likely but if he was only banned for one game (plus EFL Cup) I may be tempted to bench him.
