Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 5

The Gameweek 5 captain poll, canvassing your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 5, is now live.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

Alexis Sanchez (11.0) and Eden Hazard (10.3), the two most popular candidates to replace suspended captaincy stalwart Sergio Aguero, failed their audition spectacularly in Gameweek 4.

The 13.9% owned Sanchez was rested for the Southampton tie ahead of Arsenal’s midweek Champions League game with Paris Saint Germain and brought in just one Fantasy Premier League point from a brief appearance off the bench. Meanwhile, Gameweek 4 poll leader Eden Hazard, who sits in 34.9% of FPL teams, failed to pick up any attacking points for the first time this season, away to Swansea. The Chelsea man also only managed a single FPL point after receiving a yellow card.

Nevertheless, both could reward those who keep the faith. Hazard takes on Liverpool in the Friday evening kick off and already has two goals at Stamford Bridge this term and has fired in 10 goal attempts on home soil, compared to six away. Liverpool, it is worth noting, have failed to register a clean sheet so far this season.

An away trip to Hull City could also ensure Sanchez follows up his Gameweek 4 disappointment with a positive haul. The Chilean scored and registered two assists away to Watford in Gameweek 3.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea also offer alternative options. With a brace against Swansea, Diego Costa (9.8) is now the only forward to bring in attacking points in every fixture so far. He certainly has form on his side ahead of Friday night’s game and is now part of 21.7% of FPL teams.

Santi Cazorla (7.6), who is on penalties and has been drafted in by more than 26,000 FPL managers so far this week, could be another popular selection. His second penalty of the season, against Southampton, takes him to fourth in FPL’s overall points table. Mesut Ozil (9.6) is another candidate. Despite failing to deliver attacking returns in Gameweek 4, he was Arsenal’s most creative player that match and scored during the Gunners’ last away trip in Gameweek 3 at Vicarage Road.

Midfield captaincy options are in abundance amongst Manchester City and Liverpool’s ranks.

Robert Firmino (8.4) and Sadio Mane (8.9) brought in three goals, an assist and five bonus points between them in their humbling of Leicester at Anfield in Gameweek 4.

Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) took centre stage for Manchester City with a goal and assist in the win at Old Trafford. The surprising differential, who has an ownership of just 6.1%, looks a prime candidate for the armband when City host Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 14% of FPL managers who own Raheem Sterling will also be considering the 8.2 priced England winger, despite his lowly one point return in the Manchester derby at the weekend. That was his only match without a goal or assist all season and his last home game, against West Ham in Gameweek 2, saw him bring in 15 points via a brace of goals.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.8) may well offer the most reliable source of captaincy points, away to a Watford side that has conceded eight goals and fail to register a shut-out this campaign. No player has generated more goal attempts than the Manchester United striker this season, who with a 63% ownership is FPL’s most popular player by a clear distance.

A final name worth mentioning is something of a forgotten man in previous captain polls, however, with his first goal of the season, against Stoke in Gameweek 4, Harry Kane (10.9) could be on the verge of a prosperous run of form.

Not only has he a favourable tie, at home to Sunderland, but Spurs look set to welcome back their influential midfielder Moussa Dembele, who as the theory goes, helps get the best out of the England centre forward. Should Kane score again this weekend it surely won’t be long before his 14.3 FPL ownership rockets.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

At this rate of change, more people will own Etienne Capoue than Sergio Aguero in a few days.

    Capoue presently 22.8%
    Aguero presently 25.5%

Not sure on that one. Son played so well that you'd think he deserves another go?
I got rid of Lamela for Capoue because Capoue was set for a price rise and I needed the funds for getting Aguero back.

He's gonna be a rotation risk every week now I think. Will play more often than not, but with Son, Sissoko, Nkoudou, Alli and Eriksen (and Jansen potentially too) fighting over 3 spots behind Kane he's gonna be dropped to the bench some weeks.

My first go at a UCL fantasy squad, there are so many teams I have no idea of, but thanks to WhoScored and Transfermarkt, I finally managed to get 15 on board after an hour or so.

    Vaclik, de Sanctis,
    Hummels, Sokratis, Telles, Jedvaj, Grimaldo,
Ribery*, Nolito*, Andre Silva, Quaresma, Kapustka,
    Ronaldo, Lewandowski, Suarez.

All of my front 3 are scary to go without, hence the rest of the team looking a bit underwhelming. Ribery and Nolito are question marks, but thankfully, I'll know if they start or not before the deadline. It's a shame there are not even 4.5m goalie starters this season (Sanctis might?).

Thoughts on this, and where I am going wrong?

hi there.. i've been working on that this morning as well... its obviously less worked on in terms of pricing players compared to FPL.. u cant have playing defenders for less then 5 (exception dinamo zagreb who will get anihilated anyway)...

i think keeper bailly from celtic is a starter for 4.0 (!) ,

      current team is

      ter stegen (bailly)
      marquinos, godin, lahm (4.0, 4.0)
rakitic, xavi alonso, pjanic, nolito (pjaca)

They are both playing pretty similar roles,. Box to box with a licence to get forward more often than you'd expect. Think Swansea are a worse team than Watford though, so think Capoue looks the better pick. Although obviously that's mental in itself.

Fer and Capoue have something in common, both 2 of the most highly rated young players in Europe before injuries and lack of first team opportunites hindered their development. Now they have found a club and manager that knows how to get the best ouf them so why not?

Fer has bit of the Yaya about him, had a decent pre-season and a great start to the season. I think he may be the surprise package of the season. Fer's stats are solid too, especially compared to Capoue.

Watched the game on the weekend, thought he played well and shifted to a bout three different positions so feels a bit like Firmino in that he'll start in any system. I think he's a good 3rd/4th midfielder season keeper for you, but may have some barren weeks.

Keep for Swansea I guess? Swans seem to be pulling themselves together so he'll probably get 2 points. I might ship him for KDB (BOU) before WC GW6.

This might be mad and a bit knee jerk, but I've been thinking about Sanchez > Mane. Looking back at past performance, with Sanchez off pens, it's hard to split between them in terms of their output per minute performance over the past two seasons. Add in Mane's move to a better attacking team, and I'm starting to feel that Mane is the best premium midfielder out there (bar probably Hazard, on pens) - and at 2m less it starts to feel like a no brainer. Even with Firmino I might go for the Liverpool double up as their fixtures ease.

Would love to hear people's thoughts.

ozil output will be dimished by cazorla's presence .

alexis looked much more threatening when he came on. than ozil in the entire match

Not for me. I think you just can't take into account this weekends performance by Sanchez. He played 180 grueling minutes in South America AND was a late arrival.

He's not been on pens for years now and still delivers fantastic returns. 1 Liverpool mid + Sanchez > 2 Liverpool mids.

Just checked the stats from the last 2 seasons. Sanchez is 6.26 points per 90 mins (with some pens), Mane is 5.08 (don't think he's had any pens).

Some good points anyway, thanks guys. Iv got Firmino so I'll hold for now.

Considering this. I think I'm going to hold until the week comes where I need the money. Some sort of logic is telling me that Ozil will be better in good fixtures (now) but Cazorla probably better through tougher ones

This is the reason I didn't get him!

I think he should play 90-95% of games, but there's still a chance he will get rotated now with the presence of Xhaka

Should be nailed. I'd suspect Xhaka to come in for Coq (who had a great game btw). Unless Wenger decides to go Xhaka + Coq against big teams in away games for extra solidity..

Same reason I didn't take him on WC, looking at his past scores he could be great. Taking set pieces off Ozil makes Mesut overpriced I think.

    Bottomed so again:-

Worst GW in 3 years and below team:-

    Foster Jaku
    Stones Shaw Morgan AMat Friend
    Hazard Firmino Sanchez Sterling Fletcher
    Diomande Ibra Bony

With 1 Ft and 1,9 in bank should i carry on with same team?
not keen on capoue cause once i get him he will not score haha.
    any suggestions guys?

You had firmino...can't have been that bad really!?
Some of us got a row of 1s and 2s in defence and mid.

I personally got Antonio in, fixtures look decent and those 2 goals were painful.

I don't rate Morgan this season or Leicester defence at all... though after a 4-1 drumming they might try and tighten up.

yes 33 points in total..firmino definitely saved the day.
I know was abt to remove morgan then he scored one and now they are a leaky cauldron.

i am still not clear on getting any one in..me taking bony in instead of benteke doesnt sound wise too but lets c

Yeah, it's Ozil's kind of game. Not sure on Sanchez as space behind usually helps him. Cazorla could do well too

it'll be all about giroud, ozil, sanchez, caz and walcott near hull's box, through balls will be difficult to convert but there will be chances with crosses
