Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 5

The Gameweek 5 captain poll, canvassing your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 5, is now live.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

Alexis Sanchez (11.0) and Eden Hazard (10.3), the two most popular candidates to replace suspended captaincy stalwart Sergio Aguero, failed their audition spectacularly in Gameweek 4.

The 13.9% owned Sanchez was rested for the Southampton tie ahead of Arsenal’s midweek Champions League game with Paris Saint Germain and brought in just one Fantasy Premier League point from a brief appearance off the bench. Meanwhile, Gameweek 4 poll leader Eden Hazard, who sits in 34.9% of FPL teams, failed to pick up any attacking points for the first time this season, away to Swansea. The Chelsea man also only managed a single FPL point after receiving a yellow card.

Nevertheless, both could reward those who keep the faith. Hazard takes on Liverpool in the Friday evening kick off and already has two goals at Stamford Bridge this term and has fired in 10 goal attempts on home soil, compared to six away. Liverpool, it is worth noting, have failed to register a clean sheet so far this season.

An away trip to Hull City could also ensure Sanchez follows up his Gameweek 4 disappointment with a positive haul. The Chilean scored and registered two assists away to Watford in Gameweek 3.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea also offer alternative options. With a brace against Swansea, Diego Costa (9.8) is now the only forward to bring in attacking points in every fixture so far. He certainly has form on his side ahead of Friday night’s game and is now part of 21.7% of FPL teams.

Santi Cazorla (7.6), who is on penalties and has been drafted in by more than 26,000 FPL managers so far this week, could be another popular selection. His second penalty of the season, against Southampton, takes him to fourth in FPL’s overall points table. Mesut Ozil (9.6) is another candidate. Despite failing to deliver attacking returns in Gameweek 4, he was Arsenal’s most creative player that match and scored during the Gunners’ last away trip in Gameweek 3 at Vicarage Road.

Midfield captaincy options are in abundance amongst Manchester City and Liverpool’s ranks.

Robert Firmino (8.4) and Sadio Mane (8.9) brought in three goals, an assist and five bonus points between them in their humbling of Leicester at Anfield in Gameweek 4.

Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) took centre stage for Manchester City with a goal and assist in the win at Old Trafford. The surprising differential, who has an ownership of just 6.1%, looks a prime candidate for the armband when City host Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 14% of FPL managers who own Raheem Sterling will also be considering the 8.2 priced England winger, despite his lowly one point return in the Manchester derby at the weekend. That was his only match without a goal or assist all season and his last home game, against West Ham in Gameweek 2, saw him bring in 15 points via a brace of goals.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.8) may well offer the most reliable source of captaincy points, away to a Watford side that has conceded eight goals and fail to register a shut-out this campaign. No player has generated more goal attempts than the Manchester United striker this season, who with a 63% ownership is FPL’s most popular player by a clear distance.

A final name worth mentioning is something of a forgotten man in previous captain polls, however, with his first goal of the season, against Stoke in Gameweek 4, Harry Kane (10.9) could be on the verge of a prosperous run of form.

Not only has he a favourable tie, at home to Sunderland, but Spurs look set to welcome back their influential midfielder Moussa Dembele, who as the theory goes, helps get the best out of the England centre forward. Should Kane score again this weekend it surely won’t be long before his 14.3 FPL ownership rockets.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Highlights of your week? Taking a hit for Tadic->Sanchez and playing Lamela over Capoue were just genius moves from me.

OH, and picking Lukaku over Costa. Praying that turns out OK 😀

I personally will be starting Capoue until further notice. Price tags tend to blind us to form, and he looks a constant danger right now. Even against United I can see him getting something, and then his fixtures are fantastic.

        Haz - Capoue - Barkley - Antonio - Coutinho

Benching Negredo this week, before switching to Deeney. Then I'll be playing AAO one week, and seeing how the form of the others pans out before deciding whether to drop them down.

    Any ideas for my team?
    Foster Heaton
    Shaw Stones Souare* Friend Amat
    Hazard Sterling Cazorla Redmond Capoue
    Ibra Vardy Gray*

    * are players I want to get rid of
1FT, £3.5 ITB but ideally want to keep ~ 3.0 to do Vardy to Aguero when he's back if possible, otherwise ill have to use another transfer to downgrade someone or wildcard

Im going to do Ramirez to Cazorla or Antonio. But what would you do with Capoue and Diomande?
    A) Play Capoue, just bench Diomande, no hit.
    B) Get rid of Dio, punt on Icheanacho for a hit, bench Capoue(once again!)

Yep, had him the whole season. Thinking another cheapo (Snodgrass, Fer, Zaha etc) to rotate with him as the 4th mid to save funds. Or stretch to Cazorla and go 3-5-2

Yep, seems that way. Currently can do Lukaku, Ozil & Benteke out to Cazorla, Aguero & 5.8, so that may be my option.

Would give me front 8 of:

        Hazard, Antonio, Firmino, Cazorla, Capoue
        Ibra, Aguero, 5.8

But don't like 3-5-2 that much. Arsenal mid may be the sacrifice to lose so I can keep a better striker.

Downgrade Antonio to Snodgrass and you could play 343 with Benteke as a third striker. Selection headaches though when you decide which midfielder to bench.

Problem is their goals are already spread over 5 attackers and there is always the risk of having the wrong Liverpool asset when the others are scoring. I can see 4 or 5 of them all getting close to10 goals, but do you need more from your second priced midfielder ? Can you afford to keep (say) Mane if he blanks for 3 or 4 weeks when Coutinho or Firmino are popping up with the goals ?

I think it's crazy. Arsenal fixtures are brilliant and Bellerin is the best option in their back line. Walker will be rotated once UCL starts.

Crazy. I have Walker, but Bellerin will be top defender at the end of the year IMO. With these fixtures, this is the time to have him.

Would you save your FT with this team?

    Cech Pickford
    Williams Masuaku Pieters McAuley Amat
    Ozil Hazard Antonio Firmino Capoue
    Ibra Lukaku Benteke

Not so convinced of Ozil's performance or WHU/STK defence, both conceding 4 goals at home this week.

Yea didn't think Stoke and WHU were that bad when I got them on my wildcard. Hope they will both step up their game a bit!

    Foster
    Valencia, Evans, Walker
    Lamela, Hazard, Redmond, Sanchez
    Ibrahimovic, Lukaku, Rondon

subs: Heaton --- Capoue, Pieters, Amat

I'd play Capoue over Rondon personally.

This isn't my team (could do it for a 16 point hit, would leave me with 0.0 ITB) but what would people think of a team like this to accommodate all the big-hitters once Aguero is back? Don't think I'll risk it myself, just interested.

    Foster / Heaton

Valencia or Shaw / Baines or Walker / WBA 4.5 / 4.5 (probably Smith) / Amat

    Hazard / Cazorla / Snodgrass / Fer / Capoue

    Kun / Ibra / Costa

Didn't mean to post that! Was going to point out that Baines/Walker could be downgraded to Williams in order to upgrade Fer to a 5.5 like Zaha, King or Puncheon, if they appeal more.

I had made up my mind I'll have some fun this season, since I'm pretty sure I won't go anywhere near top 100 again - so I've been choosing different captains this season.

Kane failed in GW2, but Hazard and Payet in the last two weeks have made it up... Lukaku next week maybe?

Is it possible to have Aguero, Ibra, Hazard, Firmino/Mane, Sanchez/Ozil, Shaw/Valencia in the team?
    I think it's not.
Only if U decide do go with Capue,Fer/Snodgrass,Diamonde and Amat+4.0 but thats not worth it.

I'd rather jump ship and go Cazorla, Antonio or Lallana

    2. Sheeno

I wouldn't overlook Cazorla! He'll tick over goals and assists for set-pieces and open play, not to mention the fact he is on penalties. Trust me, he'll score highly. If I were to use him as my Arsenal cover, I could still use this team:

      Foster / Heaton

      Shaw or Valencia / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / Amat

      Hazard / Firmino / Cazorla / Snodgrass / Capoue

      Aguero / Ibra / Benteke

I'd rather Antonio over Benteke and use Benteke replacement as fodder

That's actually a fantastic call, I've never gone for 352 before but I'm looking at my team and thinking it might be a great idea for when Aguero comes back.
