Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope Returns

Afforded a little respite by the international break, we have time to give a heads-up on the return of the Suspension Tightrope widget, which is now available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the fourth button via the homepage on mobile.

For those unfamiliar, the Tightrope keeps a tally of cards accrued from all domestic matches across the EFL Cup, FA Cup and Premier League matches.

The table is updated after each Gameweek, and we aim to share the Fantasy implications of the latest yellows and reds collected in articles like the one you are reading now.

We’ll bring you news of all the latest suspensions, along with updates of the yellow card totals of the most regular perpetrators as they edge towards a domestic ban and clamber onto the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

Essentially, players have to avoid collecting five domestic bookings before New Year’s Day, when the Tightrope is extended to 10 cautions. From a Fantasy perspective, Gameweek 19 – which takes place on December 31 – is the last round of fixtures to concern us.

Already, six players are just one yellow away from a single-match suspension.

Diego Costa’s presence on the Tightrope is clearly the most significant to Fantasy Premier League managers.

Chelsea’s top scorer has thrived under the guidance of Antonio Conte – having served up returns six of the first seven Gameweeks; he sits at the top of the FPL forward standings.

The third most popular forward option, Costa – who sits in 28.9% of FPL squads – has yet to manage two matches without a booking ahead of the Blues’ clash against Leicester.

With old boss Jose Mourinho and Man United rolling up to the Bridge in Gameweek 9, Conte needs his main striker to be on his best behaviour against the Foxes.

Jordan Henderson, Ryan Shawcross and Jose Holebas, along with West Brom pair Jonny Evans and Claudio Yacob are also teetering on the brink.

Below them, there are 23 players sitting on three yellows apiece.

Raheem Sterling is the standout name amongst that batch.

Owned by over 26% of FPL managers, he was booked just once in the first five but has since incurred the referee’s wrath in each of the last couple of Gameweeks against Swansea and Spurs.

Two of Leicester’s first-choice back-four – Robert Huth and Danny Simpson – also feature, along with Watford’s 7%-owned Troy Deeney.

The Hornets skipper has netted three times in four and now faces Middlesbrough, Swansea and Hull.

Marko Arnautovic is just two cautions shy of a ban as the fixtures turn in Stoke’s favour, as are a trio of Palace midfielders – Yohan Cabaye, Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha.

Indeed, the Eagles are one of three teams boasting a trio of players in our full run down, with Watford’s Valon Behrami and West Brom’s Craig Dawson also giving their managers cause for concern.

This leaves Burnley’s Andre Gray as the only player still serving out a suspension. He remains sidelined for matches against Southampton and Everton before returning to contention in time for the Gameweek 10 trip to Old Trafford.

Lukaku is really messing with my plans.

In truth he's been messing with me for three years.

Everytime I select him I feel I'm going back for more abuse.

I'm sure they will all be fine for the PL - these injuries only tend to affect international fixtures strangely.

On assumption that lukaku isn't available for city (and already used my free transfer)

    A. Lukaku to Austin. Then bench Austin for next two and upgrade Fletcher to Lallana/Siggy/Arnie (leaves me with 7.5)

    B. Lukaku to Deeney. Continue to bench Fletcher for next few weeks and bank cash.

    C. Hold, play 4 4 2 including Kelly and Coleman (Holebas and Mustafi other defenders)

    Thanks!

Having built up value in Lukaku I would be reluctant to sell if he looked like just
missing the City match. Would be an excuse to have some Capoue bench action

Capoue is arguably the better option this week given the respective fixture, although I'd never have the balls to do it unless Lukaku was out.

Guy has one assist in 4 seasons...

And 8 bonus points from his last 15 clean sheets! Easily worst option in that back line.

Adam, carroll, downing the big money signings.
Compare that with coutinho, firmino, mane, lallana.
I really feared for the club for a while there. Those owners were toxic.

Downing, Cole were absolute car crashes. Ended both their serious careers in effect.

New attacking signings been very good under klop. Not sure about back. Long way away from Hypia, Henchoz and Agger.

Looking at removing Valencia or Baines. Arsenals long term fixtures aren't the best going off the ticker. Liverpools looks better. With CS being at a premium which is better?

    Valencia/Baines to Mustafi

    Valencia / Baines to Clyne

I'm getting him. Will leave me with a pricey backline. Valencia Fuchs pva Mcauley Amat. Looked at the ticker and it actually works really well. Can bench them all against the likes of city, arsenal, pool, tottenham chelsea, utd.
What I love about Fuchs is Leicester seem to stick to the fixture script. They keep clean sheets when expected and get trounced when expected. He has amazing run of fixtures and cam bench the tough ones. Very reliable attacking end product. Doesn't just whack the ball in he delivers accurately.

    Pickford-Jakupovic(4.1)*
    Walker-Evans-Baines*-Holebas-Amat
    Sanchez-Capoue-Firmino-Antonio-Sterling*
    Lukaku*-Kun-Callum Wilson

    0.3 itb 2FT
    A. Jaku to Cech and Baines to a 4,4
    B. Evans to Adam Smith and save a FT
    C. Any other way to get an Arsenal defender?

PS- Assuming Sterling to be fit which he will be and Lukaku if out for the weekend, will bench him for Capoue.

    Cheers 😉

Guys, why so panic about Lukaku. He just "felt something", that's it. I'm almost sure that he's ok and it's just a precaution because he's not necessary in Giblartar's game.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Passed their sell by date

Watching England proved another example of how Rooney has passed his prime, something thankfully Jose Mourinho has noticed. He's not as good as a number of strikers for both club and country. He's also not as good as the midfielders that surround him.

Ivanovic too has been ditched finally after lacking the attributes required to be a modern full back.

Who else has passed their sell by date and needs to be consigned to the bench?

And which ageing stars still have something to offer as regular starting Fantasy assets?

Don't know about many players but I know certain teams need to leave the EPL. WBA comes to mind. They bring nothing to the league.

Zab used to be best right back in league. Garbage now.

When at Blackpool I had Charlie Adam in my team all season. As little of the start of last season Rooney was deemed essential, the reality is he's been in decline for six years.

Fab is the one though. How you go from being best midfielder in the league to wouldn't get in the top fifty in a year which should be a midfielders prime is mystifying.

Perhaps, like Rooney, he simply started too young.

No. Attacking right back, not getting rotated. Clean sheets will come. United should have won last game five nil and were undone by a wonder strike against Leicester.

    Pickford-Jakupovic(4.1)*
    Walker-Evans-Baines*-Holebas-Amat
    Sanchez-Capoue-Firmino-Antonio-Sterling*
    Lukaku*-Kun-Callum Wilson

    0.3 itb 2FT
    A. Jaku to Cech and Baines to a 4,4
    B. Evans to Adam Smith and save a FT
    C. Any other way to get an Arsenal defender?

PS- Assuming Sterling to be fit which he will be and Lukaku if out for the weekend, will bench him for Capoue.

Jaku, Baines, Willson -> Grant, Mustafi, Austin but that's for -4 so not sure about it
Baines, Willson -> Koscielny, Stuani other option but not ideal too

Think that A is best way to get Ars def

I'm a huge 3-5-2 fan and every season I always have a 3-5-2 side for at least a month. Midfielders are doing better than the strikers so 😀

I'd keep Lukaku tbh. Unless he is ruled out this weekend and you feel Deeney can match him then I'd pull the trigger. That's an extra GW worth of points afterall.

Rest of the team looks good other than Lallana's injury but other than that, you g2g.

      1. Puyol Pants Up
        • 9 Years

Yeah If Lallana is ruled out I think I'll sell Lukaku to fund in a more expensive Liverpool mid. I could downgrade my defence but I think I like the idea of having Rose + Bellerin

Liking the Slimani option myself. Lukaku's M.O. is that he struggles to score against better teams while Slimani has Fuchs and Mahrez teeing up crosses for him against weak ones

Yeah I'm looking at Slimani. But I'm also really tempted by Deeney. I already have value in him from my Pre-WC team and he will allow me to get Mane for Lallana

I think Kos + Mustafi should score around the same as Bellerin-- so there's some savings opportunity there. Also agree with the 'there-are-cheaper-options-that-can-match-Ibra' camp.

The one I'd make first? Ibra. Lukaku & Deeney are solid alternatives. And there's also Costa + Benteke as well.
