Spot the Differential – Gameweek 10

Midfield has been the key area of the pitch in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season and we’ve turned to a trio of options in the centre of the park for this weekend’s differentials.

Mesut Ozil, Christian Eriksen and Juan Mata have all been popular picks in recent years and all three will be hoping to take advantage of kind fixtures to stake a claim for consideration.

Mesut Ozil

With Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla both doubts for today’s early kick-off between Sunderland and Arsenal, the onus may be on Mesut Ozil to inspire the Gunners to victory at the Stadium of Light.

The German international has been in splendid form of late, scoring five goals and registering one assist in his last six matches in all competitions.

Facing off against a Sunderland side that has yet to keep a clean sheet this season, and that ranks third for the most shots conceded inside the box over the last four Gameweeks with 47, Ozil looks primed to produce further attacking points.

The Gunners schemer is currently available at 9.6 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and sits in just 8.8% of FPL squads.

His underlying statistics are reasonably promising over the last four Gameweeks, with 10 chances created and eight total goal attempts, with five of those coming from inside the box.

He’s also registered 24 penalty box touches over the same period, just two fewer than the more expensive Alexis Sanchez, and with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger recently praising Ozil’s desire to add goals to his game, the former Real Madrid man presents a strong case for those seeking a difference maker.

Christian Eriksen

While his Tottenham Hotspur team-mates Son Heung-min and Dele Alli have hogged the limelight from a Fantasy perspective so far this season, Christian Eriksen is a player who could warrant a gamble.

The Dane may have only managed three assists in terms of attacking returns so far this season, but the 8.2-priced playmaker, along with Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, lead all midfielders for total goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks with 18.

Six of those have hit the target, while the Spurs man also offers solid assist potential, having created eight chances, more than any other Tottenham midfielder, over the last four Gameweeks.

Eriksen is currently owned by just 5.4% of FPL bosses, and looks an intriguing option this afternoon, up against a Leicester City side that has conceded more goals (13) than any other side on the road this season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men also face further promising home matches against West Ham and Swansea City in the next five, so while Eriksen is perhaps not a name on everyone’s lips right now, he is certainly a viable option for those who’ve endured a tough start to the season and need to make up lost ground.

Juan Mata

Scorer of the only goal in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Man City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, Juan Mata could be set to profit once again in this afternoon’s plum home fixture against Burnley.

The Clarets have conceded the second highest number of shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, with 51, while they’ve let in exactly three goals in each of their trio of away matches.

Bearing in mind there are also fitness doubts surrounding Anthony Martial (foot), Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney (both thigh), it seems more than likely that Jose Mourinho will find a place for the Spaniard against the travel-sick Clarets.

Given he’s been in and out of the starting XI, it’s little surprise Mata is currently owned by just 2.3% of FPL bosses. But priced at 7.4, he does offer strong value when he gets a run in the side, and is actually the highest scoring United midfielder in FPL this season with 31 points.

Mata has a reasonable goalscoring record since his move to Old Trafford, notching 32 strikes in 120 matches in all competitions, and with further favourable fixtures against Swansea City and West Ham United to come in the next four, he could be warrant consideration in the short-term.

Is Walcott going to start??? Already made a transfer and don't want to take a hit. Have Diomande (suspended), Amat (Out of favour with Bob Bradley) and Donald bloody Love. So if Walcott doesn't play I'm stuffed.

Worth taking a hit to upgrade Diomande or a defender who will replace Walcott if he doesn't play? Or shall I just ride the storm and sort it with a FT next week? £0.9m ITB. Thoughts?

I didn't in the end. Pulis vague comment about "important players" being doubts put me off. I can't afford doubts sadly. I'll get him soon tho.

Went for redmond in the end - stats, attacking team and hull next week.

I finally have a credible bench, capt choices and players capable of returns who play.

Gwk 11 onwards hopefully when the hits pay off. This wk would be nice but happy to play it long term.

      Morning Jonty, been a while.

Sanchez on the basis of your underlining stats and the fact Sunderland are simply awful...

It's really a coin toss between him and Lukaku.

Going with Payet as West Ham are on the up (3 wins in a row)and the team is overall playing a lot better than they were earlier in the season. Payet in particular has had a huge influence in recent weeks and I think he'll do well against an Everton team that are conceding basically every week.

Zlatan, who I brought in for Aguero on Thursday.

Slimani scored 2 goals at home to Burnley, both headers, that bodes well for Zlatan. Austin scored 2 goals at home to Burnley and he's even slower than Zlatan is.

Burnley have more chances conceded in central areas than any other team except Hull and more goal attempts in the box conceded than any team except Hull. I saw them in the flesh at Stamford Bridge not too long ago, they really don't offer much away from their narrow pitch at Turf Moor.

Morale will be improved at United after beating City and I suspect they will be itching to thrash someone. Zlatan is on one of his longest runs ever without a goal despite many shots on target. The ingredients for an explosion are there. I just hope they combust!

Good luck. Even tho I don't own Zlatan I hope he scores - he's basically broken the goals imminent table with his missed big chances. I've never seen a player with his incredible stats stay on the table for this long.

Yes, since Im a swede, I really hope Zlatan will score. If I have had him, he would be my captain. If I new KDP would play, I would have captain Aguero. Now I had to go with my new midfielder Sanchez.. Just bought him for one week captainacy! Hope It will pay back.

I'll be capping Deeney because Hull can't keep a cleany,
But worried about Alexis who has more backers than Brexit.
I've put some extra time in and I'm hoping that by rhyming,
I've convince Ms Lady Luck to starting giving a... damn.

I think lukaku will score but whu def has really tightened up recently.

Been on a roll recently with Payet - Hazard - Payet. Gonna go obvious this week with Deeney, the best source of attacking potential in a Watford team at home to a dreadful Hull side.

Yea as Tims said, it's not daft, but I'd want to bring in someone like firmino who should score very well over the next few weeks... then that -4 doesn't look as harsh.

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/20161028/wenger-my-approach-to-resting-alexis

“For me, he is not a special case. He’s a player like everybody else,” Wenger said. “When I decide to take him off, I take him off. There is no special case. He has his own character but he is not treated differently from anybody else."
“We test the fatigue level of everybody, for example I tested Alexis because he played two games in South America. Sometimes I rest him straight away after [the internationals]. I played him the other day against Swansea so I thought I would take him off when it is possible. We consider every case individually."
"Also, some positions are more demanding,” added the boss. “Up front you provoke, at the back you respond. Sometimes you can choose to go or not to go at the back. Up front if you don't move you create nothing. So there are positions that are more demanding on the energy front.”
