Scout Notes – EFL Cup Final

That man Zlatan Ibrahimovic grabs the glory as Manchester United snatch the season’s first silverware from a luckless Southampton.

Manchester United 3 Southampton 2

Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic started and finished an exhilarating EFL Cup Final that, on any other day, could well have been won by the Saints.

The Swede made it six strikes from his last four Europa League and domestic cup matches – he’s managed just one in four league fixtures – as United saw off a strong Southampton comeback from 2-0 down just before half-time.

In the light of two blanks in three Gameweeks, Ibrahimovic has been sold by more than 4% of his ownership base. The 35.6% who have remained loyal will hope to reap the rewards when United entertain a struggling Bournemouth side this Saturday.

Conversely, another striker who scored twice at Wembley, Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini, has seen his ownership figures bloom despite the Saints also missing both Gameweeks 26 and 28.

Snapped up by over 131,000 last week, he’s already been acquired by 52,000+ since Saturday’s deadline passed – at least twice the number of transfers in than any other player.

A cup final brace made it five goals from just three starts since a late January move from Napoli and he has transformed a Southampton side who had been struggling without an out-and-out striker since Charlie Austin was injured in early December.

While Gabbiadini clearly has the form, his side’s fixtures are another story. They will need to quickly shake off their EFL Cup disappointment when they travel to an improving Watford at the weekend before a blank and then a trip to Spurs round out a patchy short-term schedule.

Two double Gameweeks to come offers the promise to come, but they will involve tough home matches with Arsenal and United.

Southampton were very unlucky not to open the scoring at Wembley when Gabbiadini’s finish was ruled out because Ryan Bertrand was controversially adjudged to have been offside.

An Ibrahimovic free-kick, following a foul on Ander Herrera, and a Jesse Lingard finish from a Marcos Rojo assist merely served to enhance Saints’ feelings of injustice before Gabbiadini netted from Cedric Soares’ pass just before the break.

The Italian leveled three minutes after the re-start, Oriol Romeu hit the post and David de Gea was forced into a couple of fine saves as United hung on before Ibrahimovic headed home a Herrera cross in the 87th minute to win the match.

That United rode their luck is not in doubt. How Fantasy managers utilise the team’s assets looks equally clear-cut.

The Gameweek 28 blank surely demands patience before a string of attractive fixtures, involving trips to Middlesbrough and Sunderland and home matches with West Brom and Everton, lead up to a Gameweek 33 clash with Chelsea.

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Rojo, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Carrick 45), Lingard (Rashford 77), Martial (Fellaini 90), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: Romero, Blind, Young, Rooney.

Southampton XI: Forster, Soares, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Davis (Rodriguez 90), Redmond, Tadic (Boufal 77), Gabbiadini (Long 83).
Subs not used: Hassen, McQueen, Caceres, Hojbjerg.

Yes, no DGW week either for either Merseyside clubs, unless an unforeseen circumstance like the weather intervenes.

I don't think I'll be getting him in for one GW. He wasn't producing much even when playing. They have a blank in GW28, home to LIV in GW29, away to ARS/CHE in GW30/31.

Alonso, Phillips and Kane -> Mawson, Sane and Aguero -8

    Then the following week

Sterling and Sane to Siggy and 8m or Mane and King -4?

Or just Kane to Kun 😆

Am I correct in thinking that if Arsenal and/or Man United reach the FA Cup semis they will have 3 DGWs or possibly a TGW? The possibility of a triple is making me wonder if it's better to wait and TC Sanchez/Ibra rather than Kun this week.

      1. goriuanx
        • 13 Years

Best to wait anyway in my opinion. Sanchez gets 3 more points per goal and per CS.

        1. Pep says
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 3 months ago

That's a very interesting point. Sanchez TC could earn 6pts for 2 clean sheets. 2 goals is also worth an extra 6 points. Considering the hits required for Aguerro in and back out, I'm leaning more and more towards ignoring him this week. And going out to buy a big couch also)

            • 13 Years

Only an extra 6 points if you dont have him. I will captain him meaning TCrs only gain 2 points

This is something to think about as well. If Sanchez does have a sweet DGW we will all captain him and mitigate some of the damage Sanchez TC could do. Aguero this week will be less owned and could do more damage.

Can they move one of the fixtures to a CL midweek once ARS get knocked out? I expect ARS would rather that than trying to cram 3 games in week.

Arsenal will surely do a City and play in one of the CL midweeks. United however won't have any midweeks available if they keep progressing in Europe

      5. Pep says
        • 8 Years

Think the semi final will only push the league game into the available midweek slot so they won't blank in gw34. Also means they won't double in that GW. Some people are mentioning a triple gameweek but I'm not sure what will happen. Could be a surprise change just like what we're seeing with city now

It's unlikely that any team will have 3 DGWs, Cup Semi on weekend of GW34, followed by a rearranged PL fixture in midweek is likely.

People with WC remaining are any of you considering WC coming out of GW28 AFTER GW29 specifically? There arent too many different assets we'd want then than we would at the DGW stage and there is a big contrast in assets we'd want post GW28/29/30 kind of time

      Azpil, Coleman, Yoshida
      Siggy, Phillips, Morrison, Pedro
      Lukaku, Costa, Kane
      (Zaha, Chambers, Love, Jaku)

      1 FT 2,9 ITB

      GW 27 Lukaku -> Kun
GW 28 Kun, Pedro, Chambers - > Lukaku, Firmino, Baines (-8)

Sounds good? Or do something else?

Please suggest me a midfielder under 6.3 for short term.
I have Sanchez, Siggy, Alli, Phillip, Tom Carol atm with 0.0 ITB.
I would like to do Alli > Sterling and Phillips > under 6.3 mid.
Let me know all your inputs and thoughts.

      So..

      A. J. King
      B. Snoddy

Over last 4-6 GWs King is the much better option stats wise but over the whole season Snoddy has better stats.

      Hmm?....

I swore never to get Aguero back in after effectively watching him play left-back last time I saw him.
I don't trust he'll play like against monaco.

Am I mad to go for a more-budget-friendly / less-team-disrupting move like Sterling and Sané in and leave Aguero ?

You're gonna need that money you'd save to buy a sofa come next week. I think a lot of people are going to have Aguero and, even if he's not quite the Kun of old, it's going to be a scary proposition going without him.

For 13m he is too unreliable. Pep loves rotation too much, may play de Bruyne as an extra midfielder instead of a striker and even if Aguero does play he may well be in net or played a central defender. I think I am avoiding and going for sterling

        It's a fair question.

The problem for me is that I don't want any City players apart from GW27 - not till GW32 anyway. Whoever comes in is a transfer out waiting to happen.

Aguero will be the most convenient for me so he'll come in if City get the DGW. But if it suited my squad better to take 2 midfielders instead that would also be fine. I'm not convinced that Aguero will start both games anyway. He probably will but probably is no guarantee.

The midfielders could be rotated as well, of course. City will have 6 games in 18 days (including some important ones); Sunderland and Stoke aren't the toughest and Guardiola needs little excuse to rest players at the best of times.

Third trial. Different crowds. Cheers all. (presuming city with gw27)

      A) gw27: Alli, Stanislas > Sterling, King(-4). Gw28: Sterling > Coutinho(free).
      B) gw27: Alli, Stanislas, Pjones > Sterling, Coutinho, Robertson(-8).

i would do just Alli for Sterling gw27 and then in gw28 do Sterling to Coutinho and hope that Stanislas gets some playing time.

Bournemouth have lost every game since Stanislas has been dropped, so Eddie Howe might recall him to change things up abit.

I'm a fellow Stanislas owner, and i'm keeping and hoping he gets some game time in gw 28.

Partly depends how many you have for GW28. In any case all those moves are a bit awkward.

Stanislas to King is good but not necessary this week unless you plan to play King @ Old Trafford.

Jones to Robertson is also probably good but unless you need a defender this week that can wait too. You can expect a Leicester bounce after Ranieri's departure I think.

Alli to Sterling/Sané/Yaya makes sense with a DGW but I'm very loathe to lose Alli myself, he's my only Spurs player (and I bought at 8.1m). If you have Kane or Eriksen as well that's maybe more palatable.

Personally getting a City mid means losing Alli or Hazard and I'm really not sure I want to. Would suit me better if Huddersfield won on Wednesday I think. 🙂

Assuming a DGW for CIty, I have the following options:

      1. Costa + Eriksen -> Aguero + Pedro (-4)
      2. Costa + Eriksen + Alli - > Aguero + Sterling + Sane (-8)

      1. Allows me to have 10 players in the following blank GW (after removing Aguero post DGW), and allows me to have a Chelsea attack against easy opposition
      2. I cover almost all possible City attack points, but leaves me a little short for the upcoming blank GW

Need your advice - any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately can't do that - don't have the money

I could potentially get Aguero and Sterling IF i sell Ibra. But the whole point of benching him was to have him against Bournemouth, so want to stay put

I tried option 2 only to get more CIty coverage, in case Aguero trolls everyone

How do you feel transferring out 3 players who got you around 25 points yesterday and who don't have a blank next week?

For me loosing Alli or Eriksen for Sterling or Sane for (-4) is insane specially if they continue with 3421 and I bet Poch knows he's team performs much better with that.

        1. LakhaneeFC
          • 7 Years

They did get me a LOT of points this week! 🙂 - But isn't the whole point to ride the wave and find a tangibly better wave again?

DGW with Sunderland and Stoke is definitely one of the juicier options no?

I would think getting Aguero is a must (isn't he?), but the only way I can manage that (with my TV) is to lose one of Alli/Eriksen

          1. Karan14
            • 8 Years

I own both Alli & Eriksen and even I can't get in Sterling without loosing one them. But tbh I don't think loosing Alli or Erik is worth it for (-4) for the longer term because Spurs have such great fixtures. Just get Kun if you can!

I'll wait for pressers and indication of who's starting ofcourse, and will only get Kun if i don't see Kelechi's name lurking around 🙂

Can't even afford Aguero + Sane - would have been happy with that. 0.2 short unfortunately

Do you really think it's ok to not have Kun (assuming he starts one and plays 45 minutes of the other - worst case scenario)?

Your team looks terrible for gw 28 i think i would just do Hazard to Sterling for this week, then next week Sterling/Alli for Mane/Firmino.

I wouldn't remove Rondon who plays gw 28. Also no -4 hit.
