Fantasy Eliteserien – Gameweek 3 Preview

After a five month long winter break the new season of Norwegian’s top flight football kicked off with a bang with two Gameweeks within a few days.

With Gameweek 3 starting on Saturday there is little respite for the clubs, and more importantly, us Fantasy managers. Gameweek 2 saw a lot of frustration as key assets were either benched or taken off early with the tight schedule in mind.

FFScout League Standings

The FFS community has shown an overwhelming interest for this fringe league, with 476 already having entered the FFScout main league (3769-1041).

On top with 135 points we find Norwegian Red (Oieiao) – perhaps fittingly – an Englishman.

In the FFScout  H2H league 16 managers have won both their matchups, with Ned Ryerson and Riski Virksomhet being joint top thanks to their superior points tally. Ned Ryerson features again on top of Phil Dagger’s Last Man Standing.

Stock Check

Ahead of looking at the risers and fallers from the two Gameweeks so far it is worth checking out Goktugerce‘s excellent statistical review of the first two Gameweeks, looking at team statistics, average positions and expected goals & assists. Meanwhile, Niemi took an in depth look at the good and bad players so far in every position.

Rising

Vegar Hedenstad (6.5) – Two clean sheets and an assist. On some set pieces.

Mike Jensen (10.5) – Two assists. Easy on the eye, which means he will be a favourite of ‘the man in the stand’. Already has 4 bonus points.

Milan Jevtovic (7.6) – A goal and an assist. A possible injury to Elbasan Rashani means Jevtovic could be nailed on going forward.

Nicklas Bendtner (12.5) – Two goals. The Dane is yet to find the groove but nonetheless has managed to find the back of the net in both games. Will score a lot of goals purely because of the sheer amount of chances Rosenborg create every game.

Sigurd Rosted (5.6) – Two goals. Not only is he a massive threat from set pieces, Sarpsborg play 4 out of their next 6 fixtures at home. Last season they kept an impressive 9 clean sheets in 15 games at home.

Patrick Mortensen (6.6) – Two goals and an assist. Sarpsborg have scored the joint most goals so far and the fixtures are favourable.

Gilbert Koomson (7.5) – Dubbed ’Siggy of Eliteserien’ by some of the FFS posters, Koomson showed some of his potential by scoring a penalty in GW2. The top assister from last season is yet to assist this campaign but that looks like a matter of time.

Bendik Bye (5.5) – Two goals and an assist. After a potential season ending injury for strike parter Ole Sveen, Bye should have done enough to nail down a permanent starting place.

Ifeanyi Matthew (6.1) – A goal and an assist. 4 bonus points already, including full points in a game his team lost.

Ibrahim Shuaibu (5.0) – Two goals and two assists. Incredible form and value.

Frederik Gytkjær (7.5) – Three goals. Mistaken for his brother who was the league’s top scorer last season, a lot of casuals have enjoyed the early investment of the younger Gytkjær.

Ohi Omoijuanfo (7.0) – Hat-trick in the first home game. 3 of the next 4 fixtures are at home.

Marco Tagbajumi (7.6) – Two goals. Going somewhat under the radar compared to his expensive strike partner Marcus Pedersen. Favourable fixtures.

Jylian Ryerson (4.5) – One goal. Listed as a cheap defender, Ryerson has played both games in an advanced midfield position. Will probably drop a bit deeper once Adegbenro is back. Ryerson is a jack of all trades and due to Viking’s extremely thin squad we could hope to see him OOP for longer parts of the season.

Falling

Ghayas Zahid (10.5) – Tipped by many to be in contention for player of the year, Zahid has nothing to show for so far. Consistent returns are vital for players with a premium price tag. Does however face the bottom team at home in GW3 so those patient enough to keep could finally be rewarded.

Mohammed Abdellaoue (9.4) – An impressive pre season was followed by an anonymous opening GW before being ruled out for GW2 with an injury. Is very injury prone.

Lars Vilsvik (6.0) – Viewed as a full back with big attacking threat, the only thing Vilsvik has produced so far is an own goal. The fixtures are however still good.

Rafik Zekhnini (8.5) & Fredrik Nordkvelle (9.0) – Although the former registered an assist after coming on as a sub, he was benched due poor work ethic in the previous match. The latter is yet to return attacking points.

Samuel Adegbenro (7.5) – After missing the first game through illness, Adegbenro returned to training ahead of GW2. But he missed the second game as well, and now await four of the toughest games Viking will play all season.

Gameweek 3 Picks

Scoring the winner in his debut game, Bård Finne (9.1) will look to continue his good home form when Vålerenga welcome the bottom team Sandefjord. With Abdellaoue being a doubt for Sunday, Finne might benefit from a central striker role.

When it comes to attempts, midfielder Ifeanyi Matthew (6.1) is second only to Bendik Bye with 4 shots per game. The Nigerian will certainly fancy his chances at home against what currently is the joint worst defence in the league.

Marco Tagbajuni (7.6) is on top for average xG (expected goals) per shot. Although a small sample size, this suggests he has so far been on the right place at the right time. Up against a shambolic Aalesund defence, the rather budget friendly striker could potentially even be trusted with the armband.

      This league's amazing.
Previously, Sogndal zero clean sheets & conceded 9 away (3 each game). Haugesund had scored 11.
Shuaibu gets 45mins. Kiss misses penalty. 0-0

Complete lottery. If you start following patterns it will only come back and bite you.

Indeed. But at some point players like Ruud, Koomson etc should start getting in the points.
At the same time it's quite clear some teams have been missjudged completely.

Wouldn't say patterns (3x3 was by the by), but form's hard not to follow if playing almost entirely via stats.
Although yes, supplementary spreadsheet is binned.

Fernandes has been removed from the game btw, so fortunately he can't drop in price.

Helland subbed ffs. The guy must have a world record for being taken off most times in the first half.

If I consider I got 15 of my points from Dyngeland, it's not very ideal. I was already considering WC though, I think it's time after Helland injury, Shuaibu being dropped and my other keeper is Fernandes. I'll start contemplating tonight, but it's highly likely for me to have at least 2 players from Brann. They look good. I may also consider filling my 3rd Rosenborg spot with Hansen (if he's fit).

Same as me then. I got 15 points of the bench as well from Dyngeland. They were very lucky to keep a CS, so I'll take the 15 points and sell him. Played my WC as well. Have a look at the post below. 2 players from Brann is a good choice, especially as they have 2 home games coming up.

I think 2 Rosenborg is enough for me at the moment. Even though they are the best team in Eliteserien, they aren't on fire at the moment. As Helland's injured, Jevtovic suspended and Bendtner not free scoring I think it's best to keep a spot open and leave myself more flexible to jump on one of them in the future. Midtsjø + a defender for me.

                Just wildcarded to this:

                Lie - McDermott
                Hedenstad - Rolantsson - Ryerson - Seck - Moe
                Zahid - Haugen - Svendsen - Midtsjø - XXX
                Sigurdarsson - Omoijuanfo - Lindberg

Wanted Mos in there as well, but then I would have to sell Omoijuanfo or drop Zahid. Hedenstad and Rolantsson playing every week, with the other 3 rotating fairly well. Some big decision coming up for me:

                - Hedenstad, Reginiussen or Meling? All playing very well. Tempted to go Meling, but he has more competition than Hedenstad and Reginiussen. Reginiussen playing very well and racking up bonus points as well.

                - Ryerson or a defender from Haugesund? Haraldseid, Stølås and Knudsen all a bit tempting. Not sure who I trust more, but Ryerson is the cheaper one and OOP as a CM. On 2 yellows though, can see him getting a suspension when I want to play him. Could also go Lillestrøm for value, but they doesn't look like keeping a CS currently.

                - Which Rosenborg midfielder? No doubt Helland is the best pick if injury free, but is he injury free? I think I'll go for him if he's fit for Saturday. If not I think Midtsjø still is a good of a pick as Jensen. Seems more attacking, but Jensen gets more bonus. Not worth the extra 2.0 currently IMO.

                - 5th midfielder. I think Njie is the best value pick, but I don't like the triple with Moe and Ohi. If I go Helland I might not be able to afford Njie either depending on the other choices. Morer at Sandefjord seems like an ok pick at 5.0, will most likely be benched most weeks anyway.

                Thoughts?

Seems like Helland is out for a few weeks and Jevtovic still suspended, so I'll probably stick with Midtsjø. I can afford Midtsjø>Jensen, but not sure it's worth it?

This gives me another dilemma. Do I spread the funds I had banked for Midtsjø>Helland or do I keep them there until he's back? I could also get Jensen in for Midtsjø, but not sure if it's worth it. Could also do Lindberg to Mos, but then I would have to get a very cheap 5th midfielder.

Is Zahid flattered by penalty? (haven't seen games so don't know). VIF don't have best fixtures coming up, RBK better for example.

Assuming all RBK defs have equal minutes, think I'd pick the one getting bonuses unless/until Hedenstad starts picking up other points.

Still same basic choice - better defence (Haugesund have 4/7 clean sheets) vs. Ryerson never mostly a pick for defending anyway.

I'm sticking with Midtsjo, will see on keeping Helland as well. Not sure as they're not living up to my expectations for goals/assists.

With Ohi/Shuaibu I opted for 5 decent mids & option to rotate, just because higher likelihood of benching/surprises in this game. But not ideal with selection headache and potentially wastes funds. Could have worked out this week with Svendsen (but Adegbenro), although in retrospect Njie as 5th seems fine.

Maybe, but Zahid has returns in the last 3 matches. He is the player who makes thing happens at Vålerenga even when they're not in form. He's not on fire, but one of the few players I expect to pick up points on a regular basis. On most set pieces and penalties as well. Who shall I get instead? Only tempting player is Adegbenro, but Viking are so unstable so I'm not sure what to expect. Pretty sure Zahid will pick up more points, but Adegbenro could be better value. Right now there's not much use for the extra cash anyway!?

Agree on the Rosenborg defenders. Hedenstad not that much of an attacking threat really, but might see a bigger share of set pieces if Helland's out for a couple of weeks now. Think I'll make the switch to Reginiussen anyway.

Well yeah, but I'm not totally convinced that the Haugesund defence is all that. They were extremely lucky to keep a CS against Lillestrøm and Sogndal are a really poor team. Impressive clean sheets against Stabæk and Molde though.

Midtsjø played winger in the second half yesterday. Probably the best pick right now as he'll most likely play winger next GW with Jevtovic and Helland out.

I wc:ed to this week and also looked at Seck but ended up ignoring him, like that pick though.

No Ruud could burn you though. I was also looking to oust him but couldn't in the end, he has the pedigree and will surely start producing.

I ended up with Stolås. Plan is to alternate him and Moe(think Haugesund and stabaek have perfect rotation. Though, with Ruud, Hedenstad and Rolantson I may lose out on points(like this week with Rolantson) as I can't play 4 defenders most weeks.

Not sure about Siggy as Brann aint no push overs but setting up a wc with next weeks transfer booked(as I imagine you want Siggy after Brann) aint great so go for it.

I kept Helland after the travesty of a line up Molde put out last game so probably gonna copy your Zahid pick with this weeks tranfer.

I also got Mortensen instead of Lindberg at the cost of a decent goalie.
You might end up wishing you put Adegbenro in. But I have no clue if he looked threatening last game.

Possibly a groin strain for Helland, so could be out for a couple of weeks. Nothing confirmed yet.

Rolantsson also went up, got him in yesterday for Norbye, kept Ruud and Vilsvik for now. Ruud could also be suspended if he picks up a yellow today.

Very random week again, and next week there doesn't seem to be many standout fixtures.

Sarpsborg at home against Tromsø is the standout fixture for me. Sogndal - Viking could be very interesting with Sogndal looking poor (and missing loads of players), while Viking are very unstable.

Decent captaincy shout when Brann plays at home. Will most likely captain Mortensen or Lindberg (depends on who I get on my WC), but will consider Rolantsson as well.

Meh, should have played my WC yesterday to catch the Brochmann, Storbæk and Lie rise (won't keep the first 2, but will surely rise at least 1 more time) and avoided the Ruud drop.

The amount of droppers is crazy. Seems like it's more about avoiding the drops in this game than catching the risers.

So this is what my WC currently looks like. Fairly settled on the players I've mentioned.

                      Lie - McDermott
                      Reginiussen - Rolantsson - Seck - Moe - XXX
                      Zahid - Haugen - Svendsen - Midtsjø - XXX
                      Sigurdarson - Omoijuanfo - XXX

17.9 millions for the last 3 (might get 0.1-0.3 extra due to rises). The decisions I need to make:

                      - 3rd defender to rotate with Seck and Moe. Best fit is Ryerson, Stølås/Haraldseid or Kind Mikalsen/Kippe/Haakestad.

                      - 5th midfielder. Most likely a cheap attacking player (Njie, Storbæk, Morer), but could also get Adegbenro (or even Trondsen) if I get Lindberg up front. More of a benching headache every week though.

                      - 3rd striker. Mos, Mortensen and Lindberg are the ones I'm considering. Leaning towards one of the guys from Sarpsborg as they look very good going forward and I'm not very comfortable WCing without getting any of them. Mos one of the few players who scores consistently at the moment though, but would have to get a bench fodder (4.5-5.0 most likely) as 5th mid.

Can't add much as you know way more about those picks than me, but I'll probably get Trondsen for Helland if he's out.
Fixtures are good, Lund-Nielsen's on 2 yellows, Ohi plays RBK.

I'm not totally sold on Trondsen, although he's a decent pick. Take a few set pieces, decent shot and decent delivery, but I'm not expecting him to finish as one of the top scoring midfielders. Averages less than 1 shot per game. Lindberg takes more corners than him.

Probably not, but I like his relative fixture run, S08's attacking form & would enable Sigurdarson if I stick to 5 decent mids.
If Helland's fit, might go back to 3-4-3. Likely not this week though.

True, although one was vs STB where all blanked, one vs RBK.
If Helland's fit I may double up with Lindberg instead due to limited Shaibu funds, as a step towards rejigging formation.

I've been happy with Sødlund as a fodder, getting him off the bench this week for 6 points. So he is one to consider maybe as a 5th fodder.

I've also enjoyed owning Lindberg, my captain this week and delivers points in a steady rate.

Still, I am playing 4-3-3 as the defenders score so many goals in Eliteserien. I'm not sure going cheap at the back is the way to go.

Sødlund probably the best pick at 4.5 (together with Vetlesen), but wouldn't start either of them.

There are still way more midfielders and attackers with 30+ points than defenders, so I'm not sold on 4 at the back yet. Clean sheets are pretty random too. Besides Rolantsson there haven't been any defenders racking up attacking points so far this season.

Moe is an attacking full back on pretty much every set piece for Stabæk. Seck is a beast of a CB with great goal threat, as well as Sandefjord looking better than expected. Seck has scored 32 points so far this season, just 3 less than Reginiussen and 1 less than Gregersen. Both great value at 4.0 (Moe now 4.2). Put another decent defender with attacking threat in there and I think it's a good strategy. Could miss out on the odd haul. If I already had Seck I could easily benched his 10 point haul against Molde last GW and his 12 point haul away against Viking this GW.

Absolutely. It's a shame really. Ernemann not impressing as a CAM though, so Ryerson might get another chance there. Ernemann could be benched for another player though with Ryerson continuing as a CM/CDM.

                              Shuaibu replacement:

Mos (VIF, vik, SAN, bra, FKH)
Sigurdarson (bra, SOG, odd, STB, s08)

Form & fixtures suggest Mos better for next 5? He's quite consistent, although Sigurdarson looks a great player from highlights with potential for more goals/assists. Perhaps missed Svendsen last game?

(Given fixtures S08/RBK may be better, but already have Mortensen and Bendtner's dead to me).

Mortensen and Ohi your other 2 strikers? Better fixtures for Mos, but Sigurdarson plays for a better team and looks like he's in form. IMO the best striker in Eliteserien right now and should have had way more than 3 goals. Hit the post twice as well.

Mos a good pick as well and will probably keep on scoring consistently, but Sigurdarson has bigger point potential IMO.

No, will most likely start next week. Gytkjær went off injured as well. Personally I think it's time to sell anyway.

Oh, I thought he was just subbed.

Pretty sure he went out with an injury, no clue how serious though.

Riski playing up front for Odd tonight. Odd have been pretty dire in attack so far this season though.

Well, he better deliver, I'm hoping he will save my round (not to mention he is the difference for getting knocked out of the LMS league for me now). I might stay in the LMS if he doesn't get booked, hair-thin, but hoping for minimum assist to be safe.

Can someone tell me what will Rosenberg's front 3 be like now that Holland is injured?

Wild guess, but I think they will play Bakenga and Midtsjø as wingers next GW, with Bendtner up front. After that GW Jevtovic will be back, so I guess it's Jevtovic and Bakenga as wingers. Rashani will also return from injury in a week or two most likely.

Thanks a lot , pondering between going safe with Jensen or taking a punt.

Midtsjø and Bakenga are the most likely. Meling is the best winger available, but there is no indication that he will feature there. Rashani and Jevtovic should both be available for the 16th of May.

Which one of these would you sacrifice to free some funds?

                                  A) Sanchez
                                  B) Kane
                                  C) Hazard
                                  D) Costa
                                  E) Alli
